Decades of observations show that the world's oceans have been losing oxygen, with far‐reaching consequences for ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling. To reconstruct oxygenation beyond the limited scope of instrumental records, proxy records are needed, such as sedimentary δ15N. We combine two δ15N records from the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB), a 24‐year‐long, biweekly sediment trap time series, and a 114‐year, high‐resolution sediment core together spanning the years 1892–2017. These records allow for the examination of δ15N variability on seasonal to centennial timescales. Seasonal variability in SBB δ15N is consistent in timing with the poleward advection of a high δ15N signal from the Eastern Tropical North Pacific in the summer and fall. Strong El Niño events result in variable δ15N signatures, reflective of local rainfall, and neither the Pacific Decadal Oscillation nor North Pacific Gyre Oscillation impose strong controls on bulk sedimentary δ15N. Seasonal and interannual variability in sediment trap δ13Corg is consistent with local productivity as a driver; however, this signal is not retained in the sediment core. The time series from the sediment trap and core show that bulk sedimentary δ15N in SBB has now exceeded that measured for the past 2,000 years. We hypothesize that the change in δ15N reflects the increasing influence of denitrified waters from the Eastern Tropical North Pacific and ongoing deoxygenation of the Eastern Pacific. When juxtaposed with other regional δ15N records our results further suggest that SBB is uniquely situated to record long‐term change in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific. Pb activities were analyzed in surface sediments from the Coatzacoalcos River (Gulf of Mexico) to evaluate its distribution according to sediment grain size and in different geochemical compartments by using sequential extraction techniques. The geochemical fractionation experiments provided compatible results: by using the Tessier's method [] more than 90% of the Pb activity in the samples was found the residual fraction (primary and secondary minerals) and the remaining (<10%) in the iron and manganese oxides fraction of the sediments; whereas using the Huerta-Diaz and Morse method [] the Pb content was found in comparative amounts in the reactive, the silicate, and the pyrite fractions (accounting together for >80%), and the rest was found in the residual fraction. The grain size fractionation analyses showed that the Pb activities were mostly retained in the clay fraction, accounting up to 60-70% of the Pb total activity in the sediment sample and therefore, it is concluded that the separation of the clay fraction can be useful to improve the analysis of low Pb content sediments for dating purposes. The accumulation, enrichment and provenance of selected trace metals (Ag, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) were studied in sediment cores collected from three lakes located in the Central Mexican Plateau, selected on the basis of their contrasting degree of urbanization: Santa Elena Lake, in a rural and remote area; El Tule Lake, in a rural and slightly urbanized area; and Chapala Lake, in a highly urbanized area. Grain size, magnetic susceptibility and sedimentary constituents such as organic carbon, calcium carbonate, as well as major (Al, Fe, Mn) and minor (Ca, Li, Rb, Sr, Th) elements were analyzed to explain the concentration trends of trace metals. Factor analysis (FA) was used to assess the provenance of the trace elements. The highest metal enrichment factor (EF) above natural concentration levels was found at Chapala Lake for Ag (EF = 3.9), although other trace element EF in all lakes was <2.0, indicating slight contamination. However, the concentration levels of Cr and Ni in all lakes, Hg and Zn in Chapala Lake, Cu in El Tule Lake and As in Santa Elena Lake were above international benchmarks for which adverse effects are expected to occur frequently, even for those metals only slightly enriched (e.g. As, Cr). Through FA, the terrigenous contribution was identified as the most important source of trace metals to the three lakes, most likely related to deforestation and erosion of the surrounding areas, followed by atmospheric transport of volcanic ashes, rather than to direct sources., (© 2013 Elsevier B.V. This study characterizes the histological and immunohistochemical changes in the adult rat spinal cord following photochemically induced spinal cord lesions. The spinal cord was exposed by laminectomy (T12-L1 vertebrae) and bathed with 1.5% rose bengal solution for 10 min. The excess dye was removed by saline rinse and the spinal cord was irradiated with "cold" light for 0, 1, 2.5, 5, and 10 min in different groups of rats. After 15 days a graded loss of spinal tissue was observed according to photoinduction times. Animals irradiated for 1 min showed spinal cavities involving the dorsal funiculi. The cavity became progressively larger, involving dorsal horns in animals irradiated for 2.5 min, together with the dorsolateral funiculi in animals irradiated for 5 min and the ventrolateral funiculi in those irradiated for 10 min, with loss of gray matter in these three groups. Changes in GFAP-, CGRP-, proteoglycan- and calbindin-immunoreactivity were observed in all lesioned groups when compared with control spinal cords. Hypertrophied and heavily GFAP- and proteoglycan-stained astrocytes were seen in irradiated spinal cords. Reactive microglial cells were also found. Both astroglial and microglial reactions paralleled the severity of the spinal cord lesion. A significant loss of CGRP-immunoreactive somas was seen in animals irradiated for 10 min, whereas the wider distribution of calbindin-positive neurons was found in lesioned rats. In spinal cord sections from animals illuminated for 5 min and perfused 60 min postillumination, light and electron microscopy showed cytotoxic edema with astrocytic swelling, red blood cell extravasation, and myelin degradation.

Qualitative and quantitative information is reported on the morphological changes that occur in nerve fibres and nonneuronal cells of peripheral nerve during the lifetime of the mouse. Tibial nerves of mice aged 6-33 mo were studied. With ageing, collagen accumulates in the perineurium and lipid droplets in the perineurial cells. Macrophages and mast cells increase in number, and onion bulbs and collagen pockets are frequently present. Schwann cells associated with myelinated fibres (MF) slightly decrease in number in parallel with an increase of the internodal length from 6 to 12 mo, but increase in older nerves when demyelination and remyelination are common. The unmyelinated axon to myelinated fibre (UA/MF) ratio was about 2 until 12 mo, decreasing to 1.6 by 27 mo. In older mice, the loss of nerve fibres involves UA (50% loss of 27-33 mo cf. 6 mo) more markedly than MF (35%). In aged nerves wide incisures and infolded or outfolded myelin loops are frequent, resulting in an increased irregularity in the morphology of fibres along the internodes. In the mouse there is an adult time period, 12-20 mo, during which several features of degeneration progressively appear, and an ageing period from 20 mo upwards when the nerve suffers a general disorganisation and marked fibre loss.

We compared regeneration and reinnervation of target organs after sciatic nerve resection and repair with silicone tubes filled with saline solution or with a peroneal nerve segment as a nerve transplant versus an autologous sciatic nerve graft leaving either 4 mm or 6 mm gaps. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of predegeneration and donor immunogenicity of nerve transplants. Functional reinnervation was assessed by noninvasive methods to determine recovery of sweating, sensory and motor functions in the hindpaw after three months postoperation for 4 mm and four months postoperation for 6 mm gap groups. Morphometrical analysis of the regenerated nerve were performed at the end of the follow-up. The group with an autograft achieved faster and higher levels of reinnervation for the four functions tested than any of the groups repaired by tubulization. The introduction of a small nerve transplant improved regeneration and reinnervation with respect to a saline solution filled tube slightly with a 4 mm gap, but significantly with a 6 mm long gap. The beneficial effects of the nerve transplant were significantly increased when it was predegenerated, while disappearing when its cellular component was eliminated by repeated freezing. The immunogenicity of the nerve transplant dramatically affected nerve regeneration, as it was impeded by an heterologous transplant in the tube. In summary, the use of silicone chambers with an autologous predegenerated nerve transplant may be an alternative for repairing long gaps in injured nerves, approaching the level of success of an ideal autologous nerve graft.

We compared reinnervation of target organs after sciatic nerve resection and repair by tubulization with biodurable tubes of silicone and teflon, or bioresorbable nerve guides of collagen and poly(L-lactide-co-6-caprolactone) (PLC) leaving a 6 mm gap in different groups of mice. All tubes were of 1 mm inside diameter and thin-walled (50 to 250 microm). Functional reinnervation was assessed by noninvasive methods to determine recovery of sweating, sensory and motor functions in the hindpaw repeatedly during 5 months postoperation. PLC guides allowed faster and higher levels of reinnervation for the four functions tested than collagen and silicone tubes, while teflon tubes gave the lowest levels of recovery. Regenerative reinnervation by thin nociceptive and sudomotor fibers was higher than by large sensory and alphamotor fibers in all groups. Resorbable tubes promoted regeneration in a higher proportion of mice than durable tubes. In cases with effective regeneration the nerve cable was multifascicular, with mild to moderate mononuclear cell infiltrates and a thin newly formed perineurium. The number of myelinated fibers was higher in PLC and silicone tubes than in collagen and teflon tubes. There was only minimal inflammatory reaction within the remnants of collagen tubes, but not in the other materials. PLC tubes of slow reabsorption rate seem useful for repairing long gaps in injured nerves.

The present study determines the number and morphology of myelinated fibers that regenerate after resection of the mouse sciatic nerve. In different groups of mice, a resection of 4 or 6 mm of the sciatic nerve was left unrepaired, repaired with silicone or collagen guides or by an autologous nerve graft of the same or smaller calibre. Regeneration was examined, under light microscopy, 3 months after operation and quantified by morphometric analysis of light micrographs of cross-sectional nerve fibers. The results show that, without repair, few nerve fibers reach the distal nerve stump, while tubulization or autografts allowed better regeneration. Tube repair allowed a comparable degree of regeneration to that of an autograft with 4 mm gaps, but lower with 6 mm gaps. Regeneration was limited with a gap of 6 mm in silicone tubes, but was successful in half the mice with collagen tubes. The size and myelination of regenerated fibers were below normal values in all experimental groups, although they were closer to normal with sciatic autografts than after smaller grafts and tubulization. The processes of these cells form a neurohemal organ in the dorsal perineurium/neurilemma in the ganglion. 3. None of the immunocytochemically identified peptides accounts for the observed distribution of granules.

The morphology and ultrastructure of cell nuclei in neurons of the third abdominal ganglion of crayfish were studied from alternating series of ultrathin and semithin sections. The ganglion contains approximately 850 neurons with sizes between 10 and 200 microm. Cell nuclei show a great variability. Their size, the chromatin distribution, the number of nuclear pores, the degree of nucleolar segregation and the size of nucleolus vary in close relationships with the cell size.

Specimens of the hermit crab Dardanus arrosor go indistinctively towards any of the arms of a T-maze if lighting is uniform. The difference between the probabilities of going towards one arm rather than the other tends to zero as the number of trials is increased. If only one of the arms is lightened, hermits go preferably towards the dark one: The difference between the two probabilities tends to 0.500. If the animals attracted by the dark zone are electroshocked (60 V, 2.5 seconds) near their oral zone, the probability of going towards the light zone increases (statistically significant). Differences between the learning abilities of both sexes are not significant.

Data reported up to now on neuron-glia relationships, show that neuron cell bodies and glial cells are separated by a narrow intercellular cleft which is considered as the microenvironment of the nervous system, and where neuron-glia exchange occurs. We present here evidence that neuron perikarya and ensheathing glial cells of the abdominal ganglia of the crayfish communicate through gap-like junctions. These junctions could constitute short circuits for ionic exchange between neuron perikarya and glial cells, probably with some degree of electrotonic coupling between neurons and glia. In the preparation described here, the intercellular cleft would play only a secondary role in neuron-glia communication.

In the crayfish neuropile, dense-cored vesicles (DCV) have been found in chemical terminals, mixed in with round or pleomorphic agranular synaptic vesicles, as well as in electrical terminals and neurohemal endings. DCV release their content at unspecialized non-synaptic sites. The simultaneous exocytosis of DCV and synaptic vesicles seems to be the rule in chemical terminals. DCV in specific terminals suggest non-synaptic communication. In chemical and electrical terminals, the content of DCV could have a neuromodulatory function.

Under normal conditions crustacean muscles consist of a mixed population of muscle fibres, some show only delayed rectification upon depolarization, while others display graded or all-or-none action potentials. It is now well documented that these action potentials are due to a tetrodotoxin (TTX)-insensitive voltage-dependent Ca2+ influx. Here we present evidence that several weeks after axonotomy of the motor nerve and removal of an abdominal ganglion in crayfish there was an increase of the number of slow flexor muscle fibres showing action potentials. Some of these action potentials were dependent on Na ions and were TTX-sensitive. These results suggest that after operation voltage-dependent Na+ channels become apparent in the muscle fibre membrane of the crayfish.

1. Glial cells of the crayfish abdominal ganglia have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Special attention is paid to the interrelationships between neurons and glial cells. Covers and hemocyte-related elements have also been considered. 2. Glial cells are identified by a common ultrastructure and close relationships with neurons. Four glial classes are considered, depending on their morphology, the compartment of neurons they ensheathe and neuron-glia interface. 3. Four ultrastructural classes of neurons are proposed. They differ in geometry and ultrastructure, as well as in glial covers (complexity and evaginations into the neuron somata). The morphology and organization of glial covers is specific for the neuron type they ensheathe. Specific glial covers do not differ in glia-glia communicatory structures. 4. The morphological and metabolical compartments of neurons are separated from the extracellular matrix or blood by specific glial systems. A system of two cells is interposed between neuron somata and hemolymph or the extracellular matrix. 5. Glial processes are crossed by membraneous tubular systems, at neuron perikarya and axons. Frequent gap junctions of varying area, density and number of IMP are found in the covers of neuron somata. 6. Neuron-glia interface bears numerous communicatory structures for both ionic and macromolecular exchange. They include junctions and transient modifications of membranes. Some of them suggest active transport mechanisms. 7. Modified endocytotic mechanisms seem to be responsible for the glia-to-neuron transfer of macromolecules as well as for the neuron-to-glia transfer of lamellar bodies. 8. The neuropil is divided into glomeruli (electrical or chemical) by glial processes and the trabeculae of the extracellular dense matrix. Neuron-glia membrane appositions have been found in electrical glomeruli. In chemical glomeruli, dense cored vesicles can release their content at neuron-neuron or neuron-glia intercellular cleft, at non-synaptic loci. 9. Neurons of type II contain peripheral complex Golgi systems, associated to subsurface cisternae and neuron-glia gap junctions, suggesting a cooperation of glial cells in specific macromolecular synthesis.
