5. Use of Genomic Data to Resolve Evolutionary Questions in Kangaroo Rats (genus Dipodomys)

Abstract

The development of sequencing techniques and increased availability of genome assemblies have enabled comparative studies on genome evolution in the non-model organisms to better understand genomic diversity and adaptation. Using genomic data, we investigated evolutionary questions in the kangaroo rats (genus Dipodomys), a group of New World rodents adapted to arid and semi-arid habitats, and we revealed examples of genomic signatures of their speciation and adaptive evolution. We first resolved the taxonomic issue of whether the formerly conspecific species with different karyotypes, the agile kangaroo rat (AKR, D, agilis, 2N=62) and the Dulzura kangaroo rat (DKR, D. simulans, 2N=60) are distinct species. The results supported their species level status with no evidence of sympatry or interspecific gene flow. We estimated their divergence time as ~0.7 Mya in middle Pleistocene, followed by a ~5-fold decline in the DKR’s effective population size (Ne) to ~20,000 at ~0.1 Mya, recently recovering to ~50,000, converging with that of AKR. AKR is generally distributed to higher elevations than DKR, and we investigated the inter- and intra-specific effects of elevation. The mean length of runs of homozygosity (ROHs) was negatively correlated with the elevation, suggested more structured populations at higher elevations in the two species, yet the levels of nucleotide diversity (π) were constant. AKR showed more selective sweeps than DKR, apparently associated with adaptation to high elevation, e.g., thermoregulation and response to hypoxic stress, and intraspecific comparisons among populations also revealed selective sweeps associated with local adaptation linked to elevation. The changes identified appeared to be regulatory. Finally, we employed data-driven and hypothesis-driven approaches to identify genes under positive selection in arid adapted heteromyids (kangaroo rats and mice and pocket mice) and convergently in unrelated arid adapted rodents including jerboa, gerbil, and cactus mouse. Notable among the candidate genes were those involved in energy production and hemostasis, and in response to osmotic stress.

7. Continuous online sequence learning with an unsupervised neural network model

Abstract

The ability to recognize and predict temporal sequences of sensory inputs is vital for survival in natural environments. Based on many known properties of cortical neurons, hierarchical temporal memory (HTM) sequence memory is recently proposed as a theoretical framework for sequence learning in the cortex. In this paper, we analyze properties of HTM sequence memory and apply it to sequence learning and prediction problems with streaming data. We show the model is able to continuously learn a large number of variable-order temporal sequences using an unsupervised Hebbian-like learning rule. The sparse temporal codes formed by the model can robustly handle branching temporal sequences by maintaining multiple predictions until there is sufficient disambiguating evidence. We compare the HTM sequence memory with other sequence learning algorithms, including statistical methods: autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), feedforward neural networks: online sequential extreme learning machine (ELM), and recurrent neural networks: long short-term memory (LSTM) and echo-state networks (ESN), on sequence prediction problems with both artificial and real-world data. The HTM model achieves comparable accuracy to other state-of-the-art algorithms. The model also exhibits properties that are critical for sequence learning, including continuous online learning, the ability to handle multiple predictions and branching sequences with high order statistics, robustness to sensor noise and fault tolerance, and good performance without task-specific hyper- parameters tuning. Abstract

Flight performance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) strongly depends on implemented attitude tracking control. For designing better controllers, nonlinear control design techniques are often opted instead of control design based on linearized models. Uncertainty in nonlinear dynamics estimation may arise due to inaccuracies in aerodynamic derivatives and simplifications/assumptions made during the derivation of nonlinear models. This paper considers attitude tracking control of fixed-wing UAVs having uncertain dynamics and corrupted gyro sensor outputs. An integral chain differentiator (ICD) is used to provide the analytical redundancy to the gyros used to measure the angular rates. Two control design schemes are proposed, a neuro-fuzzy adaptive sliding mode control (NFASMC) and an ICD approximation-based fuzzy adaptive sliding mode control (ICD-FASMC). In NFASMC, the uncertain part of the dynamics is estimated using an adaptive radial basis function neural network. Gyro sensor output errors are estimated in real-time, using ICD based error estimation scheme and used in the control law along with the sensor’s corrupted outputs. In ICD-FASMC, the uncertain dynamics and angular rates of UAV are estimated using the ICD such that the requirement of the gyro sensor outputs for control design is bypassed. The switching gain of the designed controllers is made adaptive using fuzzy logic to mitigate the chattering effect. The stability of the proposed controllers is proved using the Lyapunov approach. The proposed schemes are implemented using a nonlinear simulation of a fixed-wing UAV. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

Abstract

The problem of quick and accurate fault estimation in nonlinear systems is addressed in this article by combining the technique of radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and global fast terminal sliding mode control (GFTSMC) concept. A new strategy to update the neural network weights, by using the global fast terminal sliding surface instead of conventional error back propagation method, is introduced to achieve real time, quick and accurate fault estimation which is critical for fault tolerant control system design. The combination of online learning ability of RBFNN, to approximate any nonlinear function, and finite time convergence property of GFTSMC ensures quick detection and accurate estimation of faults in real time. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is demonstrated through simulations using a nonlinear model of a commercial aircraft and considering a wide range of sensors and actuators faults. The simulation results show that the proposed method is capable of quick and accurate online fault estimation in nonlinear systems and shows improved performance as compared to conventional RBFNN and other techniques existing in literature.

Abstract

There is limited research on metastable pitting corrosion in an acidic environment, and acid is a major challenge for material corrosion. Therefore, this work investigated the metastable pitting corrosion of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF)-produced Ti–6Al–4V, in Hank's solution, at different pH values (pH = 3, 5, and 7). This work investigated the effect of acid on the characteristics of passive films, as well as the change in metastable pitting behavior. Based on the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the passive film will be inhibited and dissolved under the influence of H+. The higher the concentration of H+, the thinner the passive film. Potentiodynamic polarization tests reveal that LPBFed Ti–6Al–4V in Hank's solution, at pH 3, has more obvious metastable pitting corrosion. This is because the higher the H+ concentration, the more Cl- is adsorbed on the surface of the passive film, which is prone to generate soluble chlorides by competitive adsorption with oxygen atoms and thus develop into metastable pitting corrosion. Abstract

In view of the increasing requirement of aircraft survivability on the battlefield and the increasing fault-tolerant level, the paper proposes a network distributed flight control system structure, which constructs a distributed system through distributed network and compute nodes. Several key technologies are discussed following may effectively solve the application problems of network control technology in the flight control system. The health management of compute node is completed by various monitoring means, which also provides data basis for the configuration determination of network control system. System task dynamic coordination and scheduling, combining the resource requirements of system task execution with the resource capabilities provided by system compute nodes, achieve the matching of the two through multiple task scheduling methods. The whole scheme, including the monitoring mechanism of system compute nodes and the scheduling mechanism of system tasks, can give full play to the application of network control technology in the distributed flight control system, so as to support the urgent requirements in system reliability, security and fault tolerance.

Abstract

Based on the background of the continuous improvement of the fault-tolerant capability of the flight control system, a distributed flight control system structure is proposed. The dynamic reorganization of system network and the effective scheduling of system tasks are realized through the matching of clustered computing resources and system tasks. This paper focuses on method description, task modeling and algorithm simulation for system task scheduling in the system computing network. According to the simulation results, this method can support the fault-tolerant scheduling of the network distributed flight control system structure, meet the requirements of deterministic and real-time operation of the system, and solve the problem of fault-tolerant control of the system after the failure of the control electronic devices in the system.

Abstract

In recent years, the use of aircrafts has increased alongside economic development. To make optimal use of this transportation mode, flight route planning must be conducted to minimize route distance, energy consumption, and enhance safety. Several predefined tracks are observed during an entire flight. In this paper, the flight route is simplified as a combination of lines and arc segments. When flying through a track point, the aircraft should make a turn first, and then move straight to the next track point. The relationship between the radius of the turning circle and the route distance is discussed in different situations. A conclusion is derived from analyzing the turning radius and the total distance that the aircraft has to fly. A route planning approach to the flight route is proposed in this study, wherein an appropriate radius of the turning circle is identified according to the current aircraft state. The intersection of the consecutive line and arc segment is computed to obtain the distance between two track points. The route planning approach terminates when the aircraft arrives at the designated destination.

50. HIERARCHICAL NEURAL COMPUTATION IN THE MAMMALIAN VISUAL SYSTEM

Abstract

Our visual system can efficiently extract behaviorally relevant information from ambiguous and noisy luminance patterns. Although we know much about the anatomy and physiology of the visual system, it remains obscure how the computation performed by individual visual neurons is constructed from the neural circuits. In this thesis, I designed novel statistical modeling approaches to study hierarchical neural computation, using electrophysiological recordings from several stages of the mammalian visual system. In Chapter 2, I describe a two-stage nonlinear model that characterized both synaptic current and spike response of retinal ganglion cells with unprecedented accuracy. I found that excitatory synaptic currents to ganglion cells are well described by excitatory inputs multiplied by divisive suppression, and that spike responses can be explained with the addition of a second stage of spiking nonlinearity and refractoriness. The structure of the model was inspired by known elements of the retinal circuit, and implies that presynaptic inhibition from amacrine cells is an important mechanism underlying ganglion cell computation. In Chapter 3, I describe a hierarchical stimulus-processing model of MT neurons in the context of a naturalistic optic flow stimulus. The model incorporates relevant nonlinear properties of upstream V1 processing and explained MT neuron responses to complex motion stimuli. MT neuron responses are shown to be best predicted from distinct excitatory and suppressive components. The direction-selective suppression can impart selectivity of MT neurons to complex velocity fields, and contribute to improved estimation of the three-dimensional velocity of moving objects. In Chapter 4, I present an extended model of MT neurons that includes both the stimulus-processing component and network activity reflected in local field potentials (LFPs). A significant fraction of the trial-to-trial variability of MT neuron responses is predictable from the LFPs in both passive fixation and a motion discrimination task. Moreover, the choice-related variability of MT neuron responses can be explained by their phase preferences in low-frequency band LFPs. These results suggest an important role of network activity in cortical function. Together, these results demonstrated that it is possible to infer the nature of neural computation from physiological recordings using statistical modeling approaches.
