Abstract

Aluminum film reflectors can yield a high reflectance over a broad wavelength region, and have been widely used in the spacecraft optical instruments for high quality optical applications. The reflectors, however, could deteriorate under the irradiation by charged particles in the Earth radiation belt. To understand the deterioration mechanisms, the change in surface morphology of an Al film reflector irradiated with 60 keV protons was studied in liquid nitrogen cooled vacuum environment. Proton irradiation affected strongly the Al film reflectors forming a rough surface covered with hillocks and valleys that caused an increase in the RMS roughness and light scattering that, in turn, contributed to the decrease of specular reflectance in UV and visible wavelength ranges. The studies on the changes in surface morphology of Al film reflectors induced by proton irradiation would help to understand the damage mechanism and predict the performance evolution of optical equipment used in spacecrafts under space ...

34. Chemical Deposition Method for Synthesis of Pt-TiO2 Composite Nanotubes with Photoelectrochemical Activity

Abstract

Pt nanoparticles were successfully assembled in self-organized TiO2 nanotubes by a chemical deposition method. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for characterizing the surface morphology and phase composition. Photocurrent response activity was measured. Different morphology of Pt-TiO2 NTs exhibited different photocurrent generation efficiency. High density Pt nanoparticles depositing on TiO2 NTs decreased the photocurrent of Pt-TiO2 electrodes. It was because the high density Pt nanoparticles could become the recombination centers of photoelectrons and holes.

35. The Porous TiNb24Zr4 Alloys with Controllable Porosity Fabricated by Conventional Sintering

Abstract

In the present study, porous titanium alloys were fabricated successfully by mixing titanium, niobium, and zirconium powder with pore-forming agent of ammonium bicarbonate via conventional sintering method. The pore characteristics, such as pore morphology and distribution, mean pore size and porosity of prepared porous TiNb24Zr4 alloy were investigated by optical microscopy, image processing and density determination. It was found that the pore characteristics mainly depended on the shape and size of used ammonium bicarbonate particles in present study. The porosity of the alloys could be tailored by controlling the amount of ammonium bicarbonate addition. The porous TiNb24Zr4 alloys were near β type titanium alloys, which consisted mainly of β phase and a little of α phase. The amount of α phase increased in the porous alloys due to segregation caused by the addition of pore-forming agent.
