According to the bio-ecological model, individuals are highly influenced by the context and dynamic interactions occurring within their environment over time. Therefore, prolonged shared contexts that people are exposed to, such as the higher education system, should contribute to more similarities in their cognition. We examine two research models, specifying the influence of the national higher education system as a variable, that moderates the potential relationship between the students’ country of origin and their prosocial (Model 1) and pro-environmental (Model 2)attitudes. Two culturally similar countries (Croatia and Italy) and two student subsamples from both countries (one group with social science and humanities majors and another with business and economics major) are considered. We used A. F. Hayes’ PROCESS macro to estimate the results using the regression approach. The research results show statistically significant moderated relationship between study major and prosocial and pro- environmental attitudes. However, the national HEcontexts, when considered as moderating variables, suppressed the main effects in both models. We discuss possible explanations of the suppression of the main effect by the conditional one, outline implications of the present findings and provide guidelines for future research.

Gaming has increasingly become a part of life in Africa. Currently, no data on gaming disorders or their association with mental disorders exist for African countries. This study for the first time investigated (1) the prevalence of insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, anxiety and depression among African gamers, (2) the association between these conditions and gamer types (i.e., non-problematic, engaged, problematic and addicted) and (3) the predictive power of socioeconomic markers (education, age, income, marital status, employment status) on these conditions. 10,566 people from 2 low- (Rwanda, Gabon), 6 lower-middle (Cameroon, Nigeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast) and 1 upper-middle income countries (South Africa) completed online questionnaires containing validated measures on insomnia, sleepiness, anxiety, depression and gaming addiction. Results showed our sample of gamers (24 ± 2.8 yrs; 88.64% Male), 30% were addicted, 30% were problematic, 8% were engaged and 32% were non-problematic. Os Sistemas Agroflorestais (SAFs) têm figurado como alternativa para otimizar o uso das áreas rurais, no sentido de diversificar produção, gerar renda e ainda contribuir com serviços ambientais. Em projetos bem planejados, a diversidade de produtos cultivados em uma mesma área, permite distribuição de mão-de-obra e de produção durante o ano, contribuindo para segurança alimentar e financeira do agricultor, que deixa de depender apenas das flutuações de mercado de um produto. Contudo, ainda não existem respostas contundentes que confirmem a geração de ingressos monetários substanciais de SAFs. Assim, por meio de metodologia participativa aplicada à análise financeira realizada na planilha AmazonSAF 8.1, foram avaliados dois modelos de SAFs. Partindo do pressuposto de que os sistemas analisados deveriam ser produtivos, capazes de passar das fases iniciais e intermediárias, onde os ingressos monetários são dados principalmente por plantas de ciclo curto e semi-perenes, até chegar à fase madura, com receitas advindas das plantas perenes, observa-se que os SAFs-1 e 2 não cumprem as premissas. Problemas advindos desde a incompatibilidade entre propostas dos sistemas, fatores edafoclimáticos e aptidões dos agricultores; escolha de espécies e ausência de manejo; desenho e densidade de plantas contrastantes com os objetivos, foram agentes decisivos no insucesso financeiro temporal dos sistemas. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a sobrevivência e o desenvolvimento de cactáceas epifíticas Rhipsalis lindbergiana K. Schum. e R. pachyptera Pfeiff. Fragmentos foram acompanhados em casa de vegetação durante quatro meses em diferentes substratos e após realocação para Floresta Ombrófila Densa em regeneração, município de Itaboraí, RJ. A realocação foi acompanhada por até três anos e realizada em dois períodos climáticos: menor (lote da seca) e maior precipitação (lote de chuva). Registrou-se maior crescimento das duas espécies em substrato com matéria orgânica. Os lotes da seca foram significativamente distintos nas duas espécies, provavelmente em função das chuvas que se sucederam e possibilitaram maior sobrevivência e desenvolvimento. A sobrevivência e desenvolvimento de R. lindbergiana apresentaram relação significativa com a altura das árvores onde os fragmentos foram instalados, remetendo à associação existente entre elevada diversidade de epífitos com grandes forófitos. Recomenda-se a realocação de epífitos em árvores maiores, no início dos períodos chuvosos e mantendo os fragmentos em contato com o substrato. Isso possibilitará melhor aproveitamento das plantas, além de impulsionar os processos de recuperação da diversidade e funcionalidade ecológica das florestas. Altered sleep is a common and central symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In fact, sleep disturbances are included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria for PTSD. However, it has been hypothesized that sleep disturbances are crucially involved in the aetiology of PTSD, rather than being solely a symptom arising secondarily from this disorder. Therefore, knowing the long-term effects of a trauma can be essential to establish the need of specific interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders that may persist years after a traumatic experience. In one study we showed, for the first time, that even after a period of two years people exposed to a catastrophic disaster such as the L'Aquila earthquake continue to suffer from a reduced sleep quality. Moreover, we observed that sleep quality scores decreased as a function of the proximity to the epicentre, suggesting that the psychological effects of an earthquake may be pervasive and long-lasting. It has been widely shown that disruption of sleep by acute stress may lead to deterioration in memory processing. In fact, in a recent study we observed alterations in spatial memory in PTSD subjects. Our findings indicated that PTSD is accompanied by an impressive deficit in forming a cognitive map of the environment, as well as in sleep-dependent memory consolidation. The fact that this deterioration was correlated to the subjective sleep disturbances in our PTSD group demonstrates the existence of an intimate relationship between sleep, memory consolidation, and stress.

More and more seems to be necessary to find new ways of communication between medical doctors and bioethicists in order to build a shared vocabulary and to prevent conflicts: many bioethical problems seem to be caused by the lack of dialogue between them, which both seem to speak two different languages. Improving this dialogue means searching new languages and innovative forms of communication: the narration could be a really effective tool to enhance the physicians' and bioethicist's moral conscience, since it facilitates reasoning on someone's particular experience, and, ultimately, on our experience. Starting from the results of a questionnaire administered to a group of students of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University Campus Bio-Medico we present a theoretical discussion about the need for more dialogue and for a shared vocabulary in medical experiences. In this regard, we suggest as a possible solution to the conflicts among medical doctors and bioethicists, an educational strategy, i.e., humanities courses for medical students, which may help them to deeply describe their practical present (and future) experience.

Os solos da região amazônica apresentam diferentes capacidades de uso, como função do seu elevado grau de evolução genética, relevo e intenso intemperismo. Este trabalho teve por objetivo descrever as propriedades e a distribuição dos solos na Fazenda Cristalina, São Domingos do Araguaia, sudeste do Pará, a fi m de discutir suas fragilidades e potencialidades de uso. O clima é tropical semi-úmido com estacionalidade pluviométrica. Rochas da Formação Itapecuru dão origem a solos arenosos e relevos pouco dissecados, havendo relevos forte-ondulados nas partes inferiores da paisagem. Cerca de 30 ha de pastagem plantada foram selecionados para o estudo. O levantamento de solos escala 1:3.000 foi feito através da abertura de 13 perfi s de solos, destinados à descrição morfológica e a coleta de amostras para análise química, granulométrica e física de acordo com manual do IBGE e Embrapa. Os solos da propriedade são arenosos, com baixos teores de carbono, baixa CTC e elevado teor de alumínio trocável. São profundos nas porções elevadas (Neossolos Quartzarênicos e Latossolos Vermelho-Amarelos) e rasos (Plintossolos Pétricos e afloramentos de rocha) nas porções inferiores. Apesar do relevo, nas partes elevadas ser altamente favorável ao uso, fatores intrínsecos como textura e a baixa saturação por bases determinam restrição. Mas nas partes baixas da paisagem, onde os horizontes petroplínticos e os afloramentos de rocha predominam é que se encontram as maiores restrições que levam à impossibilidade de uso.
