We study quantum criticality in the infinite range Transverse-Field Ising Model. We find subtle differences with respect to the well-known single-site mean-field theory, especially in terms of gap, entanglement and quantum criticality. The calculations are based on numerical diagonalization of Hamiltonians with up to a few thousand spins. This is made possible by the enhanced symmetries of the model, which divide the Hamiltonian into many block-diagonal sectors. The finite temperature phase diagram and the characteristic jump in heat capacity closely resemble the behavior in mean-field theory. However, unlike mean-field theory where excitations are always gapped, the excitation gap in the infinite range model goes to zero from both the paramagnetic side and from the ferromagnetic side on approach to the quantum critical point. Also, contrary to mean-field theory, at the quantum critical point the Quantum Fisher Information becomes large, implying long-range multi-partite entanglement. We find that the main role of temperature is to shift statistical weights from one conserved sector to another. However, low energy excitations in each sector arise only near the quantum critical point implying that low energy quantum fluctuations can arise only in the vicinity of the quantum critical field where they can persist up to temperatures of order the exchange constant., Comment: 8 pages and 14 figures (To appear in Physical Review B)

Background/Aim. This study aims to predict Amyloid Positron Emission Tomography (AmyloidPET) status with multimodal retinal imaging and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and to improve the performance through pretraining with synthetic data. Methods. Fundus autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and OCT angiography images from 328 eyes of 59 AmyloidPET positive subjects and 108 AmyloidPET negative subjects were used for classification. Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) were trained to generate synthetic images and unimodal CNNs were pretrained on synthetic data and finetuned on real data or trained solely on real data. Multimodal classifiers were developed to combine predictions of the four unimodal CNNs with patient metadata. Class activation maps of the unimodal classifiers provided insight into the network's attention to inputs. Results. DDPMs generated diverse, realistic images without memorization. Pretraining unimodal CNNs with synthetic data improved AUPR at most from 0.350 to 0.579. Integration of metadata in multimodal CNNs improved AUPR from 0.486 to 0.634, which was the best overall best classifier. Class activation maps highlighted relevant retinal regions which correlated with AD. Conclusion. Our method for generating and leveraging synthetic data has the potential to improve AmyloidPET prediction from multimodal retinal imaging. A DDPM can generate realistic and unique multimodal synthetic retinal images. Our best performing unimodal and multimodal classifiers were not pretrained on synthetic data, however pretraining with synthetic data slightly improved classification performance for two out of the four modalities.

The suppression of ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO$_4$ in a magnetic field is well-described by the transverse field Ising model, enabling detailed studies of critical dynamics near the quantum phase transition. We describe nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in pure and Y-doped single crystals. The non-Kramers nature of the ground state doublet leads to a unique form of the hyperfine coupling that exclusively probes the transverse field susceptibility. Our results show that this quantity diverges at the critical field, in contrast to the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, we find evidence for quantum critical fluctuations present near Tm-rich regions in Y-doped crystals at levels beyond which long-range order is suppressed, suggesting the presence of quantum Griffiths phases., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

The development of efficient quantum communication technologies depends on the innovation in multiple layers of its implementation, a challenge we address from the fundamental properties of the physical system at the nano-scale to the instrumentation level at the macro-scale. We select a promising near infrared quantum emitter, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in 4H-SiC, and integrate it, at an ensemble level, with nanopillar structures that enhance photon collection efficiency into an objective lens. To characterize NV center properties at the unprecedented sub-2 Kelvin temperatures, we incorporate compatible superconducting nanowire single photon detectors inside the chamber of an optical cryostat and create the ICECAP, the Integrated Cryogenic system for Emission, Collection And Photon-detection. ICECAP measurements show no significant linewidth broadening of NV ensemble emission and up to 28-fold enhancement in collected emission. With additional filtering, we measure emitter lifetimes of NV centers in a basal ($hk$) and an axial ($kk$) orientation unveiling their cryogenic values of 2.21 ns and 2.86 ns.

We present nuclear magnetic resonance data in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ in the presence of pulsed strain fields that are interleaved in time with the radiofrequency excitation pulses. In this approach, the precessing nuclear magnetization acquires a phase shift that is proportional to the strain and pulse time. The sensitivity in this approach is limited by the homogeneous decoherence time, $T_2$, rather than the inhomogeneous linewidth. We measure the nematic susceptibility as a function of temperature, and demonstrate three orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity. This approach will enable studies of the strain response in a broad range of materials that previously were inaccessible due to inhomogeneous broadening., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present nuclear magnetic (NMR) and qudrupole (NQR) resonance and magnetization data in the normal state of the topological crystalline superconductor LaNiGa$_2$. We find no evidence of magnetic fluctuations or enhanced paramagnetism. These results suggest that the time-reversal symmetry breaking previously reported in the superconducting state of this material is not driven by strong electron correlations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Using spin-echo Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in the model Transverse-Field Ising system TmVO$_4$, we show that low frequency quantum fluctuations at the quantum critical point have a very different effect on $^{51}$V nuclear-spins than classical low-frequency noise or fluctuations that arise at a finite temperature critical point. Spin-echos filter out the low frequency classical noise but not the quantum fluctuations. This allows us to directly visualize the quantum critical fan and demonstrate the persistence of quantum fluctuations at the critical coupling strength in TmVO$_4$ to high temperatures in an experiment that remains transparent to finite temperature classical phase transitions. These results show that while dynamical decoupling schemes can be quite effective in eliminating classical noise in a qubit, a quantum critical environment may lead to rapid entanglement and decoherence., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, magnetization, and transport measurements on a single crystal and powder of CeVGe$_3$. This material exhibits heavy fermion behavior at low temperature, accompanied by antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below 5.8 K. We find that the magnetic structure is incommensurate with AFM helical structure, characterized by a magnetic modulated propagation vector of $(0, 0, 0.49)$ with in-plane moments rotating around the $c$-axis. The NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate reveal a coherence temperature $T^*\sim 15$ K, and the presence of significant antiferromagnetic fluctuations reminiscent of the archetypical heavy fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$. We further identify a metamagnetic transition above $H_m\sim 2.5$ T for magnetic fields perpendicular to $c$. We speculate that the magnetic structure in this field-induced phase consists of a superposition with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components, which is consistent with the NMR spectrum in this region of the phase diagram. Our results thus indicate that CeVGe$_3$ is a hexagonal structure analog to tetragonal CeRhIn$_5$., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

Chemical modifications such as intercalation can be used to modify surface properties or to further functionalize the surface states of topological insulators. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we report copper migration in $\text{Cu}_{x}\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$, which occurs on a timescale of hours to days after initial surface cleaving. The increase in near-surface copper proceeds along with the oxidation of the sample surface and large changes in the selenium content. These complex changes are further modelled with core-level spectroscopy simulations, which suggest a composition gradient near the surface which develops with oxygen exposure. Our results shed light on a new phenomenon that must be considered for intercalated topological insulators$\unicode{x2014}$and intercalated materials in general$\unicode{x2014}$that surface chemical composition can change when specimens are exposed to ambient conditions.

TmVO$_{4}$ exhibits ferroquadrupolar order of the Tm 4f electronic orbitals at low temperatures, and is a model system for Ising nematicity that can be tuned continuously to a quantum phase transition via magnetic fields along the $c$-axis. Here we present $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance data in magnetic fields perpendicular to the $c$-axis in a single crystal that has been carefully cut by a plasma focused ion beam to an ellipsoidal shape to minimize the inhomogeneity of the internal demagnetization field. The resulting dramatic increase in spectral resolution enabled us to resolve the anisotropy of the electric field gradient and to measure the magnetic and quadrupolar relaxation channels separately. Perpendicular magnetic fields nominally do not couple to the low energy degrees of freedom, but we find a significant nonlinear contribution for sufficiently large fields that give rise to a rich phase diagram. The in-plane magnetic field can act either as an effective transverse or longitudinal field to the Ising nematic order, depending on the orientation relative to the principle axes of the quadrupole order, and leads to a marked in-plane anisotropy in both relaxation channels. We find that the small in-plane transverse fields initially enhance the ferroquadrupolar ordering temperature but eventually suppress the long-range order. We tentatively ascribe this behavior to the competing effects of field-induced mixing of higher energy crystal field states and the destabilizing effects of field-induced quantum fluctuations., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond have attracted broad attention as quantum sensors for both static and dynamic magnetic, electrical, strain and thermal fields, and are particularly attractive for quantum sensing under pressure in diamond anvil cells. Optically-based nuclear magnetic resonance may be possible at pressures greater than a few GPa, and offers an attractive alternative to conventional Faraday-induction based detection. Here we present AC sensing results and demonstrate synchronized readout up to 6 GPa, but find that the sensitivity is reduced due to inhomogeneities of the microwave field and pressure within the sample space. We investigate the effectiveness of the Inverse Laplace Transform (ILT) analysis method to extract the distribution of relaxation rates from nuclear magnetic resonance data with stretched exponential relaxation. Stretched-relaxation is a hallmark of a distribution of relaxation rates, and an analytical expression exists for this distribution for the case of a spin-1/2 nucleus. We compare this theoretical distribution with those extracted via the ILT method for several values of the stretching exponent and at different levels of experimental noise. The ILT accurately captures the distributions for $\beta \lesssim 0.7$, and for signal to noise ratios greater than $\sim 40$; however the ILT distributions tend to introduce artificial oscillatory components. We further use the ILT approach to analyze stretched relaxation for spin $I>1/2$ and find that the distributions are accurately captured by the theoretical expression for $I=1/2$. Our results provide a solid foundation to interpret distributions of relaxation rates for general spin $I$ in terms of stretched exponential fits., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

TmVO$_4$ exhibits ferroquadrupolar order below 2.15 K with a well-isolated non-Kramers ground state doublet, and is a model system to understand Ising nematic order. We present $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance data as a function of field orientation in a single crystal. Although the spectra are well understood in terms of direct dipolar hyperfine couplings, the spin lattice relaxation rate exhibits strong anisotropy that cannot be understood in terms of magnetic fluctuations. We find that the spin lattice relaxation rate scales with the shear elastic constant associated with the ferroquadrupole phase transition, suggesting that quadrupole (nematic) fluctuations dominate the spin lattice relaxation for in-plane fields., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report $^{77}$Se NMR data in the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of FeSe for several different field orientations. The Knight shift is suppressed in the superconducting state for in-plane fields, but does not vanish at zero temperature. For fields oriented out of the plane, little or no reduction is observed below $T_c$. These results reflect spin-singlet pairing emerging from a nematic state with large orbital susceptibility and spin-orbit coupling. The spectra and spin-relaxation rate data reveal electronic inhomogeneity that is enhanced in the superconducting state, possibly arising from enhanced density of states in the vortex cores.
