Here I use examples drawn from New York City, perhaps the quintessential global city, to demonstrate that our understanding of creativity and innovation needs to recognize a broader spectrum of economic activity encompassing both new and traditional manufacturing. This case study is an attempt to expand the heteronomy of current urban policy that promotes gentrification and the wooing of the 'creative class' as the only method of urban development. An in-depth study of small-scale manufacturers in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, in New York city is done, and the extent to which and the ways in which local policy undermines otherwise healthy locally oriented businesses is examined. The City's assumption that urban manufacturing is a dying breed becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, largely through the city's own treatment of its manufacturing businesses and sees itself as a difficult place to start and grow business.

The insufficiency of quantitative data and the lack of appreciation for qualitative techniques in academic and policy circles are discussed. A lack of quantitative data involves lack of recognition during decision-making and policy formation.

The links between gentrification and the displacement of small-scale manufacturing and blue-collar work in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York are presented. It was seen that gentrification encourages industrial displacement, which, in turn, leads to the degradation of the blue-collar work that remains and to the increasing informalization of work.

The neoliberal university requires high productivity in compressed time frames. Though the neoliberal transformation of the university is well documented, the isolating effects and embodied work conditions of such increasing demands are too rarely discussed. In this article, we develop a feminist ethics of care that challenges these working conditions. Our politics foreground collective action and the contention that good scholarship requires time to think, write, read, research, analyze, edit, organize, and resist the growing administrative and professional demands that disrupt these crucial processes of intellectual growth and personal freedom. This collectively written article explores alternatives to the fast-paced, metric-oriented neoliberal university through a slow-moving conversation on ways to slow down and claim time for slow scholarship and collective action informed by feminist politics. We examine temporal regimes of the neoliberal university and their embodied effects. We then consider strategies for slowing scholarship with the objective of contributing to the slow scholarship movement. This slowing down represents both a commitment to good scholarship, teaching, and service and a collective feminist ethics of care that challenges the accelerated time and elitism of the neoliberal university. Above all, we argue in favor of the slow scholarship movement and contribute some resistance strategies that foreground collaborative, collective, communal ways forward. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
