Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs have the potential to steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using up to 49 superconducting qubits, we prepared low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model through coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In one dimension, we observed long-range quantum correlations and a ground-state fidelity of 0.86 for 18 qubits at the critical point. In two dimensions, we found mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we explored transport in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors.

Abstract

An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Prior to fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error mitigation strategies are necessary to continue this growth. Here, we study physical simulation within the seniority-zero electron pairing subspace, which affords both a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model, and an opportunity to validate recently introduced ``purification-based'' error-mitigation strategies. We compare the performance of error mitigation based on doubling quantum resources in time (echo verification) or in space (virtual distillation), on up to $20$ qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques (e.g. post-selection); the gain from error mitigation is seen to increase with the system size. Employing these error mitigation strategies enables the implementation of the largest variational algorithm for a correlated chemistry system to-date. Extrapolating performance from these results allows us to estimate minimum requirements for a beyond-classical simulation of electronic structure. We find that, despite the impressive gains from purification-based error mitigation, significant hardware improvements will be required for classically intractable variational chemistry simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 13 page supplementary material, 12 figures. Abstract

Systems of correlated particles appear in many fields of modern science and represent some of the most intractable computational problems in nature. The computational challenge in these systems arises when interactions become comparable to other energy scales, which makes the state of each particle depend on all other particles1. The lack of general solutions for the three-body problem and acceptable theory for strongly correlated electrons shows that our understanding of correlated systems fades when the particle number or the interaction strength increases. One of the hallmarks of interacting systems is the formation of multiparticle bound states2-9. Here we develop a high-fidelity parameterizable fSim gate and implement the periodic quantum circuit of the spin-½ XXZ model in a ring of 24 superconducting qubits. We study the propagation of these excitations and observe their bound nature for up to five photons. We devise a phase-sensitive method for constructing the few-body spectrum of the bound states and extract their pseudo-charge by introducing a synthetic flux. By introducing interactions between the ring and additional qubits, we observe an unexpected resilience of the bound states to integrability breaking. This finding goes against the idea that bound states in non-integrable systems are unstable when their energies overlap with the continuum spectrum. Our work provides experimental evidence for bound states of interacting photons and discovers their stability beyond the integrability limit.

Abstract

An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Before fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error-mitigation strategies were necessary to continue this growth. Here, we validate recently introduced error-mitigation strategies that exploit the expectation that the ideal output of a quantum algorithm would be a pure state. We consider the task of simulating electron systems in the seniority-zero subspace where all electrons are paired with their opposite spin. This affords a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model. We compare the performance of error mitigations on the basis of doubling quantum resources in time or in space on up to 20 qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques such as postselection. We study how the gain from error mitigation scales with the system size and observe a polynomial suppression of error with increased resources. Extrapolation of our results indicates that substantial hardware improvements will be required for classically intractable variational chemistry simulations.

Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs can steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using 49 superconducting qubits, we prepare low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model via coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In 1D, we observe long-range quantum correlations and a ground state fidelity that depends weakly on system sizes. In 2D, we find mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we discover a new spin transport regime in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors, and an essential tool for investigating nonequilibrium quantum phenomena.

Abstract

Quantum computers hold the promise of executing tasks beyond the capability of classical computers. Noise competes with coherent evolution and destroys long-range correlations, making it an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. We report Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) experiments where we identify distinct phases driven by the interplay between quantum dynamics and noise. Using cross-entropy benchmarking, we observe phase boundaries which can define the computational complexity of noisy quantum evolution. We conclude by presenting an RCS experiment with 70 qubits at 24 cycles. We estimate the computational cost against improved classical methods and demonstrate that our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers.

20. Simulation of Fatigue Performance of Polymeric Composites for Infrastructure Applications

Abstract

A simulation model which incorporates a fracture mechanics-based residual strength model for glass fiber in the statistical- and numerical-based Lattice Green Function Local Load Sharing Model has be developed. The simulation of the fatigue of glass fiber-reinforced composites is achieved by replacing the constant stress parameter in the model with a sinusoidal wave function. Recognizing Mandell’s stipulation, that fatigue failure in glass fiber-reinforced polymeric composites is a fiber-dominated mechanism with a characteristic slope of 10%UTS/decade, simulation results are shown consistent with available experimental data. The slopes of simulated S-N fatigue curves at three frequencies namely: 2, 5 and 10 Hz are within 12–14 UTS/decade compared with 10.6–13 UTS/decade for unidirectional glass reinforced composites (epoxy and vinyl ester).

Abstract

Mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) is recruited to the lysosomal membrane by the active Rag heterodimer, where mTORC1 interacts with active Rheb for its activation. It has been shown that polyubiquitination of Rheb is crucial for enhancing its interaction with mTORC1 on the lysosome. However, the specific ubiquitin ligases for Rheb, which promotes mTORC1 activation, remain elusive. We report that the CUL3-RBX1-KLHL9 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex is translocated to the lysosome and ubiquitinates Rheb in response to amino acid stimulation. KLHL9 serves as an essential adaptor for CUL3-RBX1 to target Rheb on the lysosome. Deleting either CUL3, RBX1, or KLHL9 diminishes Rheb ubiquitination and reduces amino acid-induced mTORC1 activation without impacting lysosomal mTORC1 localization or Akt activity. Abstract

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model were conjectured as to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we studied the probability distribution of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center, [Formula: see text]. The first two moments of [Formula: see text] show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments ruled out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

39. Evaluating the Appropriateness of Podcasts to Improve the Knowledge and Awareness of Selected Health Topics Among Undergraduate General Nursing Students: Protocol for an International Feasibility Study.

Abstract

Background: Podcasts have proven to be a successful alternative source of educational material for students. Given the ability to listen to podcasts 24/7 and while on the go, this technology has the potential to provide informative and educational material to a large number of people at any given time. Podcasts are usually freely available on commonly used mobile devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets., Objective: This paper describes the impact of health-related podcasts as an intervention tool to support the knowledge and awareness of nursing students on a given topic., Methods: Pre- and postpodcast questionnaires will gather data regarding the participants' knowledge and awareness of two topics-gestational diabetes and mental health. This intervention will be tested on general nursing undergraduate students. The total number of students (N=2395) from the participating universities are broken down as follows: (1) University College Cork (n=850) and the University of Galway (n=450) in Ireland, (2) Mzuzu University in Malawi (n=719), and (3) University of Fort Hare in South Africa (n=376)., Results: The study received ethical approval from the University College Cork Ethics Committee (2022-027A1). The approval obtained from University College Cork sufficed as ethics coverage for the University of Galway in Ireland. Ethics approval was also received from the Mzuzu University Research Ethics Committee (ID MZUNIREC/DOR/23/28) and the Inter-Faculty Research Ethics Committee of the University of Fort Hare (ID CIL002-21). Data collection is currently underway and will continue until the end of February 2024. The quantitative and qualitative data are expected to be analyzed in March 2024., Conclusions: Results from this study will allow for an investigation into the impact of podcasts in different settings: a high-income country (Ireland), an upper-middle-income country (South Africa), and a low-to-middle-income country (Malawi). The data gathered from this feasibility study will provide more clarity on the potential utility of podcasts as an intervention tool. 41. Efficacy evaluation of novel organic iron complexes in laying hens: effects on laying performance, egg quality, egg iron content, and blood biochemical parameters.

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the optimal dose of novel iron amino acid complexes (Fe-Lys-Glu) by measuring laying performance, egg quality, egg iron (Fe) concentrations, and blood biochemical parameters in laying hens., Methods: A total of 1,260 18-week-old healthy Beijing White laying hens were randomly divided into 7 groups with 12 replicates of 15 birds each. After a 2-wk acclimation to the basal diet, hens were fed diets supplemented with 0 (negative control, the analyzed innate iron content was 75.06 mg/kg), 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Lys-Glu or 45 mg Fe/kg from FeSO4 (positive control) for 24 wk., Results: Results showed that compared with the negative and positive control groups, dietary supplementation with 30 to 75 mg Fe/kg from Fe-Lys-Glu significantly (linear and quadratic, p<0.05) increased the laying rate (LR) and average daily egg weight (ADEW); hens administered 45 to 75 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Lys-Glu showed a remarkable (linear, p<0.05) decrease in feed conversion ratio. There were no significant differences among all groups in egg quality. The iron concentrations in egg yolk and serum were elevated by increasing Fe-Lys-Glu levels, and the highest iron content was found in 75 mg Fe/kg group. In addition, hens fed 45 mg Fe/kg from Fe-Lys-Glu had (linear and quadratic, p<0.05) higher yolk Fe contents than that with the same dosage of FeSO4 supplementation. The red blood cell (RBC) count and hemoglobin content (linear and quadratic, p<0.05) increased obviously in the groups fed with 30 to 75 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Lys-Glu in comparison with the control group. Fe-Lys-Glu supplementation also (linear and quadratic, p<0.05) enhanced the activity of copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) in serum, as a result, the serum malonaldehyde content (linear and quadratic, p<0.05) decreased in hens received 60 to 75 mg Fe/kg as Fe-Lys-Glu., Conclusion: Supplementation Fe-Lys-Glu in laying hens could substitute for FeSO4 and the optimal additive levels of Fe-Lys-Glu are 45 mg Fe/kg in layers diets based on the quadratic regression analysis of LR, ADEW, RBC, and Cu/Zn-SOD.

Abstract

Background: It is essential to accurately distinguish small benign hyperplastic colon polyps (HP) from sessile serrated lesions (SSL) or adenomatous polyps (TA) based on endoscopic appearances. Our objective was to determine the accuracy and inter-observer agreements for the endoscopic diagnosis of small polyps., Methods: High-quality endoscopic images of 30 small HPs, SSLs, and TAs were used randomly to create two-timed PowerPoint slide sets-one with and another one without information on polyp size and location. Seven endoscopists viewed the slides on two separate occasions 90 days apart, identified the polyp type, and graded their confidence level. Overall and polyp-specific accuracies were assessed for the group and individual endoscopists. Chi-square tests and Kappa (κ) statistics were used to compare differences as appropriate., Results: When polyp size and location were provided, overall accuracy was 67.1% for TAs, 50.0% for SSLs, and 41.4% for HPs; the corresponding accuracies were 60%, 44.3%, and 34.3% when polyp size and location were withheld (p < .001). Inter-observer agreement was moderate for TAs (κ = 0.50) and fair for SSLs (κ = 0.26) and HPs (κ = 0.29); the corresponding inter-observer agreements were 0.44, 0.31, and 0.17 with polyp size and location withheld. Accuracy was not affected by knowledge of polyp size, location, or confidence level. Endoscopists with ≥ 10 years (vs. < 10 years) of colonoscopy experience had marginally higher (56% vs. 40%, p = 0.05) accuracy for SSL diagnosis., Conclusions: The ability to distinguish between small TAs, SSLs, and HPs on their endoscopic appearance is poor regardless of the endoscopists' knowledge of polyp size and location., (© 2022. Abstract

Osteosarcoma is an aggressive tumor of the bone that primarily affects young adults and adolescents. Osteosarcoma is characterized by genomic chaos and heterogeneity. While inactivation of tumor protein p53 (TP53) is nearly universal other high frequency mutations or structural variations have not been identified. Despite this genomic heterogeneity, key conserved transcriptional programs associated with survival have been identified across human, canine and induced murine osteosarcoma. The epigenomic landscape, including DNA methylation, plays a key role in establishing transcriptional programs in all cell types. The role of epigenetic dysregulation has been studied in a variety of cancers but has yet to be explored at scale in osteosarcoma. Here we examined genome-wide DNA methylation patterns in 24 human and 44 canine osteosarcoma samples identifying groups of highly correlated DNA methylation marks in human and canine osteosarcoma samples. We also link specific DNA methylation patterns to key transcriptional programs in both human and canine osteosarcoma. Building on previous work, we built a DNA methylation-based measure for the presence and abundance of various immune cell types in osteosarcoma. Finally, we determined that the underlying state of the tumor, and not changes in cell composition, were the main driver of differences in DNA methylation across the human and canine samples. 44. Genotoxicity evaluation of magnesium salts of isobutyrate and 2-methylbutyrate.

Abstract

Results of genotoxicity studies for magnesium salts of isobutyrate and 2-methylbutyrate, two candidate ingredients for inclusion in animal feed, are described in this manuscript. Both substances were tested for mutagenicity in a bacterial reverse mutation assay and clastogenicity/aneugenicity in an in vitro micronucleus study in human lymphocytes, conducted according to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guidelines. The substances were tested up to the limits of solubility in the tests. The results showed that that magnesium salts of isobutyrate and 2-methylbutyrate are not mutagenic, clastogenic or aneugenic. Abstract

The objective of the study was to evaluate the maximum tolerance limit of amino acid copper complex (Cu-Lys-Glu) for laying hens by measuring their laying performance, hematological and serum biochemical parameters, organ index, and histopathology. A total of 450 18-week-old Beijing White layers were randomly allocated to 5 groups (90 birds per group) with 6 replicates of 15 birds each. After a 2-week acclimation on a basal diet (analyzed copper content 8.63 mg/kg), the birds were fed diets supplemented with 0 (control), 15, 75, 150, and 300 mg Cu/kg as Cu-Lys-Glu for 10 weeks. Results showed that, compared with the control group, dietary supplementation with 15, 75, and 150 mg Cu/kg as Cu-Lys-Glu did not affect (P > 0.05) laying performance, whereas hens receiving with 300 mg Cu/kg significantly decreased (P < 0.001) the laying rate as compared with the control. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed among the hens receiving 0, 15, 75, and 150 mg Cu/kg as Cu-Lys-Glu in hematological and serum biochemical parameters, organ indexes, and histopathological changes. However, hens receiving 300 mg Cu/kg significantly increased (P < 0.05) the concentrations of mean corpuscular volume (MCV), albumin (ALB), total bilirubin (TBILI), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea nitrogen (UN), and creatinine (CRE), as well as caused severe microscopic histopathological changes in the liver and kidney. In conclusion, 150 mg Cu/kg as Cu-Lys-Glu is identified as no-side-effect supplementation level in laying hens after daily administration for 70 days.

46. Clinical Evaluation of a Patient With Symptoms of Colonic or Anorectal Motility Disorders.

Abstract

Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, fecal incontinence, abdominal pain, and anorectal pain are problems that affect 40% of the population. They commonly present with overlapping symptoms indicating that their pathophysiology affects multiple segments of the gut as well as brain and gut interactions. Clinically, although some conditions are readily recognized, dyssynergic defecation, fecal incontinence, and anorectal pain are often missed or misdiagnosed. Consequently, the assessment of lower gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with suspected colonic or anorectal motility disorder(s) remains challenging for most clinicians. A detailed history, use of the Bristol stool form scale, prospective stool diaries, ideally through a phone App, digital rectal examination, and judicious use of complementary diagnostic tests are essential. Additionally, it is important to evaluate the impact of these problems on quality of life and psychosocial issues, because they are intricately linked with these disorders. The Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire for functional gastrointestinal disorders can provide additional information often missed during history taking. Here, we discuss a systematic approach for the clinical evaluation of patients with suspected lower gastrointestinal problems, grouped under 4 common diagnostic categories. We describe how to take a detailed history, perform meticulous digital rectal examination, and use validated tools to supplement clinical evaluation, including assessments of quality of life and scoring systems for disease severity and digital Apps. These tools could facilitate a comprehensive plan for clinical management including diagnostic tests, and translate the patients' complaints into definable, diagnostic categories.

49. Evaluation of confocal endoscopic microscopy for detection of early-stage gastric cancer in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) syndrome.

Abstract

Background: Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) syndrome results most often from a mutation in the CDH1 tumor suppressor gene and confers a 56-70% lifetime risk of gastric cancer. In asymptomatic carriers HDGC is characterized by multiple foci of signet ring cancer cells (SRCC) throughout the gastric mucosa. Because SRCC foci are less than 1 mm in diameter, and often make up less than 2% of the gastric mucosa, they are undetectable on standard screening endoscopy. International consensus guidelines recommend thorough white light endoscopic gastric mapping with a systematic method for gastric biopsies. Despite a painstaking approach to gastric mapping, retrospective analyses have demonstrated a low rate of detection and poor sensitivity of standard white light endoscopy for detecting occult cancer cells. Therefore, a more sensitive cancer screening tool is needed for these high-risk patients. Confocal endoscopic microscopy (CEM) allows for real-time, in vivo histologic imaging of gastrointestinal mucosa during upper endoscopy. Clinical application has demonstrated the ability of CEM to differentiate normal mucosal cells and cancer cells., Methods: A phase II clinical trial is currently underway to compare CEM to standard endoscopic gastric mapping in an effort to reduce the false negative detection rate of SRCC in patients diagnosed with HDGC. After an upper endoscopy with gastric mapping is performed, patients will undergo probe-based CEM. The endoscopist will scan the anatomic zones of the stomach in a similar fashion to the systematic gastric mapping approach. Any abnormal areas visualized with the CEM probe will be biopsied and sent for permanent pathologic analysis.
