Abstract

Il saggio intende ripercorrere i passaggi più significativi del volume che la Brooke nel 1959 dedicò a Early Franciscan Government. Si trattava di una pionieristica ricerca, prevalentemente basata sulle fonti - agiografiche e cronachistiche - scritte da frati Minori, grazie alle quali la Brooke offrì un quadro interpretativo molto convincente delle sorti dell'Ordine fino alla morte di Francesco. La più corposa sezione dell'opera è dedicata al generalato di frate Elia da Cortona, certamente quello più significativo per i successivi sviluppi dell'Ordine dei frati Minori e meglio documentato. La Brooke esamina con estrema attenzione le fonti, in modo nuovo ed estraneo agli schieramenti interni all'Ordine, che sovente ne avevano condizionato la lettura, e tratteggia un quadro originale. I successivi generalati risultano nel complesso meno documentati e meno decisivi per la storia dell'Ordine. Solo con Bonaventura si verifica un passaggio definitivo dal punto di vista istituzionale. Si esaminano quindi le cause che hanno impedito - almeno nella storiografia italiana - un'adeguata valorizzazione dell'opera della Brooke., My aim is to retrace the most significant passages of the volume that Brooke dedicated to Early Franciscan Government in 1959. It was a pioneering research, mainly based on sources - hagiographic and chronicle - written by Friars Minor, thanks to which Brooke offered a very persuasive framework of interpretation of the developments of the Order until the death of Francis. The largest section of the book is dedicated to the generalate of Friar Elias of Cortona, certainly the most significant for the subsequent development of the Order of Friars Minor and the best documented. Brooke examines the sources with extreme care, in a new way and unrelated to the internal alignments of the Order, which had often conditioned the reading, and draws an original picture. The following generalates are on the whole less documented and less decisive for the history of the Order.Only with Bonaventure there is a definitive passage from the institutional point of view. Therefore, the causes that have impeded - at least in Italian historiography - an adequate valorization of Brooke's work are examined.

Abstract

Background Atazanavir and darunavir represent the main HIV PIs recommended in pregnancy, but comparative data in pregnant women are limited. We assessed the safety and activity profile of these two drugs in pregnancy using data from a national observational study. Methods Women with atazanavir or darunavir exposure in pregnancy were evaluated for laboratory measures and main pregnancy outcomes (e.g. preterm delivery, low birthweight, non-elective caesarean section and neonatal gestational age-adjusted birthweight Z-score). Results Final analysis included 500 pregnancies with either atazanavir (n = 409) or darunavir (n = 91) exposure. No differences in pregnancy outcomes, weight gain in pregnancy, drug discontinuations, undetectable HIV-RNA, haemoglobin, ALT, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were observed between the two groups. At third trimester, exposure to darunavir was associated with higher levels of plasma triglycerides (median 235.5 versus 179 mg/dL; P = 0.032) and a higher total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio (median 4.03 versus 3.27; P = 0.028) and exposure to atazanavir was associated with higher levels of plasma bilirubin (1.54 versus 0.32 mg/dL; P

Abstract

Objectives To assess in pregnant women with HIV the rates of amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), and the outcomes associated with such procedures. Design Observational study. Data from the Italian National Program on Surveillance on Antiretroviral Treatment in Pregnancy were used. Setting University and hospital clinics. Population Pregnant women with HIV. Methods Temporal trends were analysed by analysis of variance and by the Chi-square test for trend. Quantitative variables were compared by Student's t-test and categorical data by the Chi-square test, with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals calculated. Main outcome measures Rate of invasive testing, intrauterine death, HIV transmission. Results Between 2001 and 2015, among 2065 pregnancies in women with HIV, 113 (5.5%) had invasive tests performed. The procedures were conducted under antiretroviral treatment in 99 cases (87.6%), with a significant increase over time in the proportion of tests performed under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) (100% in 2011–2015). Three intrauterine deaths were observed (2.6%), and 14 pregnancies were terminated because of fetal anomalies. Among 96 live newborns, eight had no information available on HIV status. Among the remaining 88 cases with either amniocentesis (n = 75), CVS (n = 12), or both (n = 1), two HIV transmissions occurred (2.3%). No HIV transmission occurred among the women who were on HAART at the time of invasive testing, and none after 2005. Conclusions The findings reinforce the assumption that invasive prenatal testing does not increase the risk of HIV vertical transmission among pregnant women under suppressive antiretroviral treatment. Tweetable abstract No HIV transmission occurred among women who underwent amniocentesis or CVS under effective anti-HIV regimens.

Abstract

Data from 197 patients for whom highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) failed, who started a new regimen chosen under the guide of resistance testing results interpreted by experts, were retrospectively studied, provided that at least 2 determinations of adherence and plasma drug concentrations were performed during the follow-up. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted, using confirmed virologie response at week 24 as outcome measure (i.e., achievement of undetectable HIV plasma viral load at any time point before week 24 and its maintenance up to week 24). Suboptimal drug concentrations (odds ratio [OR]: 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.2-0.7; p = 0.006) and suboptimal adherence (OR: 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.8; p = 0.014) were both negative independent predictors of sustained virologic response, while the use of boosted protease inhibitor-containing regimens resulted to be protective (OR: 2.4; 95% CI 1.1-5.3; p = 0.032). © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Atazanavir and lopinavir represent the main HIV protease inhibitors recommended in pregnancy, but comparative data in pregnant women are limited. METHODS: Women from a national observational study, exposed in pregnancy to either atazanavir or lopinavir, were compared for glucose and lipid profiles, liver function tests, CD4 count, HIV RNA and main pregnancy outcomes. Statistical methods included univariate and multivariable analyses. RESULTS: The study population included 428 pregnancies (lopinavir, 322; atazanavir, 106). The lopinavir group was characterized by higher rates of HIV diagnosis in pregnancy and treatment indication for maternal health, lower CD4 counts, higher HIV RNA levels, less frequent antiretroviral treatment at conception and shorter duration of drug exposure during pregnancy. No differences in pregnancy outcomes, glucose metabolism and weight gain were observed. The two groups also showed in a multivariable analysis similar odds for detectable HIV RNA in the third trimester (adjusted OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.35-2.10, P = 0.730). Total lipid levels were significantly higher in the lopinavir group (median values in the third trimester 239 versus 221 mg/dL for total cholesterol and 226 versus 181 mg/dL for triglycerides; P < 0.001 for both comparisons) and bilirubin levels were significantly higher in the atazanavir group (1.53 versus 0.46 mg/dL, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study atazanavir and lopinavir showed similar safety and activity in pregnancy, with no differences in the main pregnancy outcomes. Atazanavir use was associated with a better lipid profile and with higher bilirubin levels. Overall, the study findings confirm that these two HIV protease inhibitors represent equally valid alternative options.

Abstract

Although most of the women (69.4%) had a normal BMI at start of pregnancy, only 37% had an adequate weight gain during pregnancy. Inadequate body weight gain was more common (44.8%) than excessive weight gain (18.2%), but 40% of overweight women and 50% of obese women had an excessive weight gain in pregnancy, with about 9% of the women in these categories gaining >18 kg during pregnancy (Table 1). Only 1.9% of the women had a vaginal delivery; elective and nonelective cesarean deliveries accounted for 81.3% and 16.7% of deliveries, respectively. Compared to underweight/normal women, overweight/obese women had similar occurrences of preterm delivery (23.4% vs 22.7%, P = .871), significantly lower rates of low birthweight (14.2% vs 24.2%, P = .007) and nonelective cesarean deliveries (11.7% vs 18.3%, P = .042), and a significantly higher occurrence of fasting plasma glucose >92 mg/dL at 20–28 weeks (12.1% vs 6.6%, P = .027), hypertension during pregnancy (6.4% vs 2.7%, P = .019), and gestational age–adjusted birthweight >90th percentile (15.5% vs 5.0%, P < .001). Complications of delivery, major birth defects, and HIV transmission were similar between the 2 groups (7.3% vs 7.6%, P = .881; 2.6% vs 3.5%, P = .589; and 0.8% vs 0.5%, P = .661, respectively). An inadequate weight gain during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of nonelective cesarean delivery (OR, 1.589 [95% CI, 1.077–2.346], P = .020). Excessive weight gain during pregnancy was not associated with either hypertension (OR, 1.364 [95% CI, .537–3.465], P = .514) or 20–28 week glucose level of >92 mg/dL (OR, 0.841 [95% CI, .399–1.772], P = .648), but was significantly associated with birthweight >90th percentile (OR, 2.271 [95% CI, 1.229–4.195], P = .009), and appeared to be protective against low birthweight (OR, 0.544 [95% CI, .323–.918], P = .023) and birthweight

Abstract

Objective We used data from a national study of pregnant women with HIV to evaluate the prevalence of congenital abnormalities in newborns from women with HIV infection. Design Observational study. Setting University and hospital clinics. Population Pregnant women with HIV exposed to antiretroviral treatment at any time during pregnancy. Methods The total prevalence of birth defects was assessed on live births, stillbirths, and elective terminations for fetal anomaly. The associations between potentially predictive variables and the occurrence of birth defects were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for exposed versus unexposed cases, calculated in univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Main outcome measures Birth defects, defined according to the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry criteria. Results A total of 1257 pregnancies with exposure at any time to antiretroviral therapy were evaluated. Forty-two cases with major defects were observed. The total prevalence was 3.2% (95% CI 1.9–4.5) for exposure to any antiretroviral drug during the first trimester (23 cases with defects) and 3.4% (95% CI 1.9–4.9) for no antiretroviral exposure during the first trimester (19 cases). No associations were found between major birth defects and first-trimester exposure to any antiretroviral treatment (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.51–1.75), main drug classes (nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.51–1.76; non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, OR 1.20, 95% CI 0.56–2.55; protease inhibitors, OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.43–1.95), and individual drugs, including efavirenz (prevalence for efavirenz, 2.5%). Conclusions This study adds further support to the assumption that first-trimester exposure to antiretroviral treatment does not increase the risk of congenital abnormalities.

Abstract

Data from 197 patients for whom highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) failed, who started a new regimen chosen under the guide of resistance testing results interpreted by experts, were retrospectively studied, provided that at least 2 determinations of adherence and plasma drug concentrations were performed during the follow-up. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted, using confirmed virologic response at week 24 as outcome measure (i.e., achievement of undetectable HIV plasma viral load at any time point before week 24 and its maintenance up to week 24). Suboptimal drug concentrations (odds ratio [OR]: 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.2-0.7; p = 0.006) and suboptimal adherence (OR: 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.8; p = 0.014) were both negative independent predictors of sustained virologic response, while the use of boosted protease inhibitor-containing regimens resulted to be protective (OR: 2.4; 95% CI 1.1-5.3; p = 0.032).

Abstract

Background: Infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria have caused a resurgence of interest in colistin. To date, information about pharmacokinetics of colistin is very limited in critically ill patients, and no attempts have been made to evaluate its concentration in BAL.Methods: In this prospective, open-label study, 13 adult patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by gram-negative bacteria were treated with colistin methanesulfonate (CMS) IV, 2 million International Units (174 mg) q8h, a usually recommended dose, for at least 2 days. Blood samples were collected from each patient at time intervals after the end of infusion. BAL was performed at 2 h. Colistin was measured by a selective, sensitive high-performance liquid chromatography-based method. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined by noncompartmental analysis.Results: Patients received 2.19 ± 0.38 mg/kg (range, 1.58-3.16) of CMS per dose. At steady state, mean ± SD plasma colistin maximum (Cmax) and trough (Ctrough) concentrations were 2.21 ± 1.08 and 1.03 ± 0.69 μg/mL, respectively. Mean ± SD area under the plasma concentration-time curve from 0 to 8 h (AUC(0-8)), apparent elimination half-life, and apparent volume of distribution were 11.5 ± 6.2 μg × h/mL, 5.9 ± 2.6 h, and 1.5 ± 1.1 L/kg, respectively. Cmax/minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratio and AUC(0-24)/MIC ratio (MIC = 2 μg/mL) were 1.1 ± 0.5 and 17.3 ± 9.3, respectively. Colistin was undetectable in BAL. Nephrotoxicity was not observed.Conclusions: Although the pharmacodynamic parameters that better predict the efficacy of colistin are not known in humans, in critically ill adult patients the IV administration of CMS 2 million International Units (174 mg) q8h results in apparently suboptimal plasma concentrations of colistin, which is undetectable in BAL. Abstract

A prospective, randomized pilot trial was conducted in naive patients comparing three different combinations: zidovudine+lamivudine+lopinavir/ritonavir (arm A) versus tenofovir+lamivudine+efavirenz (arm B) versus tenofovir+didanosine+efavirenz (arm C). HIV-RNA slope (days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28) was slower in arm C with respect to arm B (P<0.0001). Seven out of eight patients (87.5%) reached undetectable HIV-RNA by week 28 in arm A, 10/10 (100%) in arm B and 6/10 (60%) in arm C. Among arm C patients who failed at week 4, one HIV isolate showed 67N and 219Q, and another one showed 210F and 215D substitutions in the HIV reverse transcriptase gene at baseline, respectively. Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor resistance-related mutations appeared first, followed by 65R mutations in all cases. Efavirenz AUC0–24values were lower in arm C with respect to arm B, especially in patients who failed early. A high virological failure rate after tenofovir+didanosine+efavirenz correlated with a slower HIV-RNA decrease and a peculiar accumulation of resistance mutations. A constellation of factors could be correlated with early failure events in patients receiving this combination such as resistance mutations or polymorphisms present at baseline, low CD4+ T-cell count or advanced disease and unexpectedly low efavirenz plasma levels.

Abstract

BACKGROUND:: There is no consensus on darunavir (DRV) target levels in plasma for clinical use, and information about variability in plasma concentrations is limited. AIM:: To investigate the variability in DRV plasma trough concentrations in the clinical setting, evaluating interindividual and intraindividual variabilities of plasma drug levels among HIV-infected patients receiving ritonavir (RTV)-boosted DRV (DRV/r) within salvage regimens, and evaluate the potential correlation between variability and virological response. METHODS:: Sixty-two patients taking DRV/r (600/100 mg twice a day) were evaluated for trough plasma concentrations and immunovirological parameters after 6 months from the start of the regimen. A subgroup of patients (n = 21) was also evaluated for intraindividual variability (expressed as coefficient of variation) on 2 samples taken at different time points. Drug concentrations were assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, and the values were expressed as medians with interquartile range (IQR). Genotypic sensitivity score and genotypic inhibitory quotient were calculated. RESULTS:: DRV/r was used with a median of 3 other antiretroviral drugs (raltegravir use 88.7%). Median plasma concentrations were 3.22 mcg/mL (IQR, 2.04-5.69) for DRV and 0.44 mcg/mL (IQR, 0.21-0.70) for RTV. Both drugs showed a high interindividual variability in plasma concentrations (61% and 99.3%, respectively). Only 3 patients (4.8%) had undetectable DRV plasma levels. DRV plasma concentrations showed a significant positive correlation with age (r = 0.298, P = 0.019), but no significant correlation between DRV genotypic inhibitory quotient and HIV-RNA plasma levels (P = 0.614) was found. Intraindividual coefficients of variation were 58.4% for DRV and 47.1% for RTV. Patients with undetectable HIV-RNA showed a trend for lower intraindividual coefficients of variation compared with patients with detectable HIV-RNA (55.9% versus 83.8%, P = 0.156). No major interaction effects with other antiretroviral drugs were found. CONCLUSIONS:: In a context of salvage therapy, both DRV and RTV plasma levels showed high interindividual and intraindividual variabilities. Abstract

Data from 197 patients for whom highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) failed, who started a new regimen chosen under the guide of resistance testing results interpreted by experts, were retrospectively studied, provided that at least 2 determinations of adherence and plasma drug concentrations were performed during the follow-up. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted, using confirmed virologie response at week 24 as outcome measure (i.e., achievement of undetectable HIV plasma viral load at any time point before week 24 and its maintenance up to week 24). Suboptimal drug concentrations (odds ratio [OR]: 0.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.2-0.7; p = 0.006) and suboptimal adherence (OR: 0.4; 95% CI 0.2-0.8; p = 0.014) were both negative independent predictors of sustained virologic response, while the use of boosted protease inhibitor-containing regimens resulted to be protective (OR: 2.4; 95% CI 1.1-5.3; p = 0.032). © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this pilot study was to examine the pharmacokinetics of atazanavir (ATV) when given in combination with amprenavir (APV) or saquinavir hard-gel capsules (SQV) to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. Methods: Included in the study were 34 HIV-infected patients enrolled in the ATV Early Access Program, who were treated with unboosted ATV alone (group 1) or with the double protease inhibitor combinations, ATV plus APV (group 2) or ATV plus SQV (group 3). ATV was given at a daily dose of 400 mg q.d. with the morning meal with SQV 1200 mg per day or APV 1200 mg per day. Serial blood samples for steady-state ATV pharmacokinetics were collected before the morning dose and at 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 and 24 h post-dosing. ATV plasma concentrations were measured using a high-performance liquid chromatography method with ultraviolet detection. Results: Of the patients, 12 received ATV as a single protease inhibitor; 12 received ATV in combination with APV; and 10 in combination with SQV. Geometric mean (coefficient of variation) ATV C-trough was 110 ng/ml (2.38), 86 ng/ml (0.84) and 149 ng/ml (2.01) in groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively. ATV C-trough in both double protease inhibitor combination regimens was not significantly different from that as a single protease inhibitor [geometric mean ratio (GMR): 0.77; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38-1.58, P=not significant for group 2 versus group 1 and 1.34, 0.40-4.49, P=not significant, for group 3 versus group 1). Patients treated with ATV plus APV had a 40.2% lower ATV C-max and a 30.8% smaller ATV AUC than the reference group treated with unboosted ATV alone: both these differences were statistically significant (GMR, 95% CI: 0.59, 0.41-0.85, P=0.005 and 0.69, 0.48-0.99, P=0.056, respectively). No difference was observed for either C-max or AUC between the group treated with ATV plus SQV and the reference group (GMR, 95% CI: 0.78, 0.47-1.30, P=not significant and 1.24, 0.73-2.10, P=not significant, respectively). Conclusion: ATV pharmacokinetics does not seem to be influenced by the concomitant administration of SQV, whereas APV significantly lowers plasma ATV levels.

Background/objectives: This study aimed to analyse the role of the choroid in early age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by analysing choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in pure cohorts of patients with subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDD) or conventional drusen (CD)., Subjects/methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study. Comprehensive ophthalmologic examination and multimodal imaging including fundus photography, autofluorescence, near infrared reflectance, and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) was performed. CVI processing was performed on a foveal horizontal SDOCT scan with binarization using Image J Image software and calculated as the ratio between luminal area (LA) and total area (TA)., Results: Sixty-nine eyes of 69 participants were included; 23 eyes with SDD alone, 22 eyes with CD alone, and 24 control eyes of healthy age-matched subjects. CVI was significantly reduced in the SDD and CD group compared to controls (p = 0.0001). Post-hoc analysis revealed a significant reduction of CVI in the SDD versus the control group (p = 0.0002), in the CD versus the control group (p = 0.001), and in the SDD versus the CD group (p = 0.006). Covariance analysis showed a significant difference of LA (p = 0.033) but no significant difference of TA (p = 0.106) between the three groups. Direct comparison between CD and SDD showed a significant reduction of LA and TA in the SDD group., Conclusions: CVI may have prognostic implications in early AMD. Abstract

Successful reproduction in avian species requires considerable parental care, and for most species the efforts of both parents are necessary for the survival of offspring. Here we make the case that in these species reproductive interactions are enhanced when neurochemical activity reinforces critical stimuli and behaviors through associative learning. Drawing from research on several different species, we describe evidence for the role of associative learning in the reproductive behaviors of ring neck doves (Streptopelia risoria). A hypothetical mechanism involving a combination of classical and operant conditioning is proposed to explain the formation and maintenance of the pair bond, nest fidelity, and incubation behavior. Abstract

Recurrent loss-of-function deletions cause frequent inactivation of tumour suppressor genes but often also involve the collateral deletion of essential genes in chromosomal proximity, engendering dependence on paralogues that maintain similar function. Although these paralogues are attractive anticancer targets, no methodology exists to uncover such collateral lethal genes. Here we report a framework for collateral lethal gene identification via metabolic fluxes, CLIM, and use it to reveal MTHFD2 as a collateral lethal gene in UQCR11-deleted ovarian tumours. We show that MTHFD2 has a non-canonical oxidative function to provide mitochondrial NAD + , and demonstrate the regulation of systemic metabolic activity by the paralogue metabolic pathway maintaining metabolic flux compensation. This UQCR11-MTHFD2 collateral lethality is confirmed in vivo, with MTHFD2 inhibition leading to complete remission of UQCR11-deleted ovarian tumours. Abstract

In avian brood parasitism, parasites lay their eggs in the nests of hosts, and many hosts in the wild respond by eliminating or abandoning foreign eggs in their clutch. However, a limitation upon the study of proximate, especially physiological and experience-dependent cognitive mechanisms of egg rejection, has been the lack of a suitable model system in captivity. Here, we tested whether laboratory-kept ringneck doves (Streptopelia risoria) respond to visually distinct egg types (through applying an ink treatment upon the doves' own eggs) by rejecting them. We found that in two of two experiments, brown eggs were more often rejected, through predominantly egg burial, relative to control eggs but were done so only by a subset of dove pairs. These results are supportive of ringneck doves to become a suitable captive model for the study of foreign-egg rejection, and open the way for future research on the integrative (e.g., genetic, endocrine, ontogenetic, and cognitive) study of egg-rejection responses in a tractable research system. However, the ecological validity and applicability of this model system for the analysis of host-parasite interactions in the wild remain narrowly limited. Abstract

Incubation of eggs is a critical component of parental care in avian species. However, we do not fully understand the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying this vital behavior. While prolactin is clearly involved, it alone cannot explain the fine-tuning of incubation behavior. The present experiments explored the possibility that incubation is reinforced through a hedonic system in which contact with eggs elicited an opiate-mediated reinforcing state. Blockade of opiate receptors with naloxone reduced time ring neck doves (Streptopelia risoria) spent on the nest, possibly by uncoupling the opiate-receptor mediated hedonic experience of contact with eggs from nest-sitting behavior. Likewise, activation of opiate receptors with morphine also reduced time spent on the nest, possibly by activating an opiate-receptor mediated hedonic experience, hence rendering the eliciting behavior (contact with eggs) unnecessary. Abstract

Background . Intraperitoneal nebulization of ropivacaine reduces postoperative pain and morphine consumption after laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this multicenter double-blind randomized controlled trial was to assess the efficacy of different doses and dose-related absorption of ropivacaine when nebulized in the peritoneal cavity during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods . Patients were randomized to receive 50, 100, or 150 mg of ropivacaine 1% by peritoneal nebulization through a nebulizer. Morphine consumption, pain intensity in the abdomen, wound and shoulder, time to unassisted ambulation, discharge time, and adverse effects were collected during the first 48 hours after surgery. The pharmacokinetics of ropivacaine was evaluated using high performance liquid chromatography. Results . Nebulization of 50 mg of ropivacaine had the same effect of 100 or 150 mg in terms of postoperative morphine consumption, shoulder pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, activity resumption, and hospital discharge timing (>0.05). Abstract

Ability to recognize and differentiate between predators and non-predators is a crucial component of successful anti-predator behavior. While there is evidence that both genetic and experiential mechanisms mediate anti-predator behaviors in various animal species, it is unknown to what extent each of these two mechanisms are utilized by the green monkey (Chlorocebus sabaeus). Green monkeys on the West Indies island of Barbados offer a unique opportunity to investigate the underpinnings of anti-predator behaviors in a species that has been isolated from ancestral predators for over 350 years. In the first experiment, monkeys in two free-ranging troops were presented with photographs of an ancestral predator (leopard, Panthera pardus) and a non-predator (African Buffalo, Syncerus caffer). Relative to non-predator stimuli, images of a leopard elicited less approach, more alarm calls, and more escape responses. Subsequent experiments were conducted to determine whether the monkeys were responding to a leopard-specific feature (spotted fur) or a general predator feature (forward facing eyes). The monkeys showed similar approach to images of an unfamiliar non-predator regardless of whether the image had forward facing predator eyes or side facing non-predator eyes. However, once near the images, the monkeys were less likely to reach for peanuts near the predator eyes than the non-predator eyes. The monkeys avoided an image of spotted leopard fur but approached the same image of fur when the dark spots had been removed.
