Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC⁴A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC⁴A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC⁴A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC⁴A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC⁴A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract: We thank the authors (hereafter referred to as CCC) for providing us an opportunity to clarify some points of our original paper. CCC list in their abstract three "key points"that we respond to in this Reply. The first comment is the central one and the most developed. It deals mainly with discussion of features of methods of spectral analysis, mainly SSA. We have quoted the sub‐parts of that comment as items 1a to 1k. The replies to comments/key points 2 and 3 are shorter. We disagree with most of the comments by CCC and explain why. We conclude that we have successfully countered CCC's criticism and shown many of their points to be unsubstantiated. The main problem seems to reside in differences concerning the literature on Singular Spectral Analysis and our use of it. Much of our response to the comments can be found in textbooks and review papers on SSA and time series analysis; we quote extensively, both in our original paper and in this response to CCC, Golyandina and Zhigljavsky (2013). Key Points: We find compelling results showing a significant co‐variability between sunspot numbers and global temperature.We do not have a mechanism to explain that forcing: it remains to be found. We do not discuss further the parts of CCC on mechanisms.The trends of temperature and sunspots (first SSA component) are similar; the second component results in an opposite trend in the last 30 years. Abstract: Vertical mixing is often regarded as the Achilles' heel of ocean models. In particular, few models include a comprehensive and energy‐constrained parameterization of mixing by internal ocean tides. Here, we present an energy‐conserving mixing scheme which accounts for the local breaking of high‐mode internal tides and the distant dissipation of low‐mode internal tides. The scheme relies on four static two‐dimensional maps of internal tide dissipation, constructed using mode‐by‐mode Lagrangian tracking of energy beams from sources to sinks. Each map is associated with a distinct dissipative process and a corresponding vertical structure. Applied to an observational climatology of stratification, the scheme produces a global three‐dimensional map of dissipation which compares well with available microstructure observations and with upper‐ocean finestructure mixing estimates. This relative agreement, both in magnitude and spatial structure across ocean basins, suggests that internal tides underpin most of observed dissipation in the ocean interior at the global scale. The proposed parameterization is therefore expected to improve understanding, mapping, and modeling of ocean mixing. Plain Language Summary: When tidal ocean currents flow over bumpy seafloor, they generate internal tidal waves. Internal waves are the subsurface analog of surface waves that break on beaches. Like surface waves, internal tidal waves often become unstable and break into turbulence. This turbulence is a primary cause of mixing between stacked ocean layers—a key process regulating ocean currents and biology and a key ingredient of computer models of the global ocean. In this article, a three‐dimensional global map of mixing induced by internal tidal waves is presented. This map incorporates a large variety of energy pathways from the generation of tidal waves to turbulence, accounting for the conservation of energy. The map is compared to available observations of turbulence across the globe and found to reproduce with good fidelity the main patterns identified in observations. This relatively good agreement suggests that internal tidal waves are the main source of turbulence in the subsurface ocean and implies that the map may serve a range of applications. In particular, the three‐dimensional map provides an efficient and realistic means to represent mixing by internal tidal waves in global ocean models. Abstract: The availability of nutrients in the mixed layer is the main limitation to organic carbon biological production in the tropical regions. In this paper, we investigate the potential role of internal waves at promoting the development of biological activity on a PIRATA mooring at 6 degrees S, 10 degrees W. This mooring is located above the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where we observe strong internal waves. Using a one-dimensional physical and biogeochemical coupled model, we simulate dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Providing the influence of vertical advection and turbulent diapycnal diffusivity are (it is vertical advection + turbulent dipycnal mixing) accounted for, we find that this model provides a good fit with observed in situ CO2 fugacity (fCO(2)). Main effect of internal waves is to rapidly increase the DIC, thus the fCO(2) and the nutrients in the mixed layer. The latter induce progressive development of biological activity leading to gradual DIC decrease. Our study highlights the importance of correctly taking into account the effect of internal waves in tropical regions.

Abstract: The large-scale Arctic sea-ice retreat induces a gradual replacement of thick, multi-year sea ice by thinner first-year ice. The latter has distinctive physical properties and is in particular substantially saltier. It is generally thought that while salt rejection occurs primarily during ice formation in winter, most of the remaining brine is flushed out of the ice by the percolating surface melt water in summer. Here, it is argued that a substantial part of this residual desalination of first-year sea ice can occur well before summer melt, due to brine convection over the full thickness of the ice, once the ice temperature is higher than a threshold that depends on bulk salinity and thickness. This critical temperature is substantially higher than the permeability threshold. The argument stems from a theoretical analysis of the porous Rayleigh number depicting the propensity for convection in the mushy-layer theory. It is supported by simulations performed with a state-of-the-art 1-D sea-ice model. The study was initially motivated by observations collected in March 2007 in Storfjorden, Svalbard. Those are indirect, however, and are thus presented here as a possible example. Two sporadic anomalies of seawater salinity were recorded close to the base of 40 cm thick ice in temperature conditions that are incompatible with ice formation. Analyses and simulations forced with observed atmospheric conditions suggest that the second peak is caused by flushing of meltwater, while the first and most intense peak is likely associated with an episode of brine convection over the full depth of the ice, yielding significant desalination. Abstract: One main purpose of BOUM experiment was to give evidence of the possible impact of submesoscale dynamics on biogeochemical cycles. To this aim physical as well as biogeochemical data were collected along a zonal transect through the western and eastern basins. Along this transect 3 day fixed point stations were performed within anticyclonic eddies during which microstructure measurements were collected over the first 100 m. We focus here on the characterization of turbulent mixing induced by internal wave breaking. The analysis of microstructure measurements revealed a high level of turbulence in the seasonal pycnocline and a moderate level below with energy dissipation mean values of the order of 10-6 W kg-1 and 10-8 W kg-1, respectively. Fine-scale parameterizations developed to mimic energy dissipation produced by internal wavebreaking were then tested against these direct measurements. Once validated a parameterization has been applied to infer energy dissipation and mixing over the whole data set, thus providing an overview over a latitudinal section of the Mediterranean sea. The results evidence a significant increase of dissipation at the top and base of eddies associated with strong near inertial waves. High washout rates, i.e. small M/2 index values, were found in the former, whereas low washout rates with higher M/2 indices were observed in the latter. Abstract: A radioisotope test using 131I-labelled serum albumin and venous occlusion plethysmography were performed simultaneously on the feet of normal individuals and patients with peripheral arterial disease during a period of reactive hyperemia. The radioisotope test includes a circulation time and a build-up curve reflecting a local clearance process which is characterized by the parameter M/2 -- delay. Between the parameter M/2 -- delay of the radioisotope test and the blood flow measured by the plethysmograph, the power relationship was found to be: M/2 -- delay = 74.01 F-0.74 with r = 0.69. The experimental data show that the plethysmographic blood flow measurement is an accurate method for the assessment of the peripheral circulation in normal individuals but is less suitable in patients with peripheral arterial disease. The radioisotope test appears to be more valuable than the plethysmographic blood flow measurement for the differentiation of normal individuals from patients with peripheral arterial disease and for the evaluation of the grade of ischemia. Abstract: The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract: Iron is an essential nutrient that regulates productivity in ~30% of the ocean. Compared with deep (>2000 meter) hydrothermal activity at mid-ocean ridges that provide iron to the ocean's interior, shallow (<500 meter) hydrothermal fluids are likely to influence the surface's ecosystem. However, their effect is unknown. In this work, we show that fluids emitted along the Tonga volcanic arc (South Pacific) have a substantial impact on iron concentrations in the photic layer through vertical diffusion. This enrichment stimulates biological activity, resulting in an extensive patch of chlorophyll (360,000 square kilometers). Diazotroph activity is two to eight times higher and carbon export fluxes are two to three times higher in iron-enriched waters than in adjacent unfertilized waters. Such findings reveal a previously undescribed mechanism of natural iron fertilization in the ocean that fuels regional hotspot sinks for atmospheric CO 2 .

50. Historical CTD dataset and associated processed dissipation rate using an improved Thorpe method in the Indonesian seas.

Abstract: In this article, we present the datasets which are used to estimate the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates and vertical diffusivity in the Indonesian seas. An archived CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) datasets collected between 1990 and 2016 with 1 m vertical resolution is presented and analyzed using an improved Thorpe method. The direct estimates dataset of the dissipation rate from two research expeditions, i.e., INDOMIX Program in 2010 and TOMTOM Program in 2015 were also presented, available to be compared with the indirect estimates from CTD profiles. We also present the dissipation rate output of three recent regional internal tide models in the Indonesian seas for comparison with microstructure measurements and improved Thorpe estimates.
