Translocation of endangered plant species and facilitating in situ regeneration require knowledge of the factors that define suitable habitat characteristics. Four approaches were employed to define how antecedent and contemporary plant identity influenced Cycas seedling growth and survival in Guam, Yap, and the Philippines. Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill or Cycas nitida K.D. Hill & A. Lindstr. seedlings growing beneath the canopy of the maternal parent tree reached 100% mortality in 4 to 8 year. Cycas micronesica seedlings planted beneath a conspecific male adult tree reached 68% mortality in two years while seedlings planted away from a conspecific individual exhibited 100% survival. Cycas micronesica seedlings planted beneath monostands of invasive Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit or Vitex parviflora Juss. reached 40% mortality in two years while seedlings planted in adjacent native forest cover exhibited 100% survival. Cycas micronesica seedlings planted in soil conditioned for 9 months by conspecifics, heterospecific native species, Carica papaya L., L. leucocephala, or V. parviflora exhibited the greatest growth in the soils conditioned by heterospecific natives and the least growth in the soils conditioned by the three invasive species. The seedlings growing in soil conditioned by conspecifics exhibited the most coralloid roots and the greatest shoot:root ratio. These studies confirmed that the identity of antecedent and competitive plants strongly influenced the longevity and growth of Cycas seedlings. Conservationists may improve outcomes by avoiding degraded forests that have experienced invasive plant species when positioning translocation projects. Planting Cycas seedlings in biodiverse native forest but away from a conspecific individual may lead to the greatest success in population recovery.

Knowledge about the position of tree roots is needed to understand tree biology and inform management decisions. Cycad species produce pachycaul stems and are not represented in the published studies on the relationships between aboveground tree traits and root system spread. We measured the radius of root egress from 6-year-old Cycas edentata de Laub., Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill, and Cycas nitida K.D. Hill & A. Lindstrom plants in an ex situ cycad germplasm collection into an 8-m-wide buffer zone in which no trees were growing. We then determined the relationships of root system radius to aboveground plant traits. The root system radius extended 5.2 to 7.5 m from the base of the stems, and was 3.5 times the plant height, 32 to 36 times the stem diameter, and 3.6 to 4.2 times the radius of the canopy dripline. Values for root radius in relation to plant height and canopy radius exceeded published data for leptocaul tree species, but values for stem diameter were less than these data. These findings on the location of cycad roots provide adaptive management cycad knowledge to inform horticulture decisions such as avoidance of roots during soil disturbance and placement of fertilizers and systemic pesticides.

Cycad stem cuttings will develop adventitious roots if the open wound is first treated with a sealant to protect the exposed parenchyma tissue. The commercial pruning wound sealant that is often employed for this purpose is not available in many locations. We used commonly available products as a prophylactic sealant on Cycas edentata, Cycas micronesica, and Cycas nitida cuttings to determine efficacy for sealing the wound and enabling adventitious root formation. Success was quantified after 7 months in a sand propagation substrate. Mortality was 100% for control cuttings with no wound sealant and about 60% for cuttings with candle wax as the sealant. Cuttings that received petroleum jelly, lanolin paste, modeling clay, honeycomb wax, or commercial pruning sealant exhibited 100% survival. Success in adventitious root formation ranged from 75% to 92% among the five successful prophylactic treatments and did not differ among the species. The results indicated that four of the products we evaluated were as effective as commercial pruning sealant for treating the exposed parenchyma on Cycas stem cuttings and enabling asexual propagation success. Stem respiration is influenced by the vertical location of tree stems, but the influence of vertical location on stem respiration in a representative cycad species has not been determined. We quantified the influence of vertical strata on stem carbon dioxide efflux (Es) for six arborescent Cycas L. species to characterize this component of stem respiration and ecosystem carbon cycling. The influence of strata on Es was remarkably consistent among the species, with a stable baseline flux characterizing the full mid-strata of the pachycaulous stems and an increase in Es at the lowest and highest strata. The mid-strata flux ranged from 1.8 μmol·m−2·s−1 for Cycas micronesica K.D. Hill to 3.5 μmol·m−2·s−1 for Cycas revoluta Thunb. For all species, Es increased about 30% at the lowest stratum and about 80% at the highest stratum. A significant quadratic model adequately described the Es patterns for all six species. The increase of Es at the lowest stratum was consistent with the influence of root-respired carbon dioxide entering the stem via sap flow, then contributing to Es via radial conductance to the stem surface. The substantial increase in Es at the highest stratum is likely a result of the growth and maintenance respiration of the massive cycad primary thickening meristem that constructs the unique pachycaulous cycad stem.

Split-root techniques were used to determine if Cycas edentata seedling roots possessed identity recognition capabilities. One compartment of the split-root containers contained a competing half-sibling seedling, and the second compartment contained one of four treatments. When the second compartment contained a half-sibling or C. edentata seedling from the same habitat, root growth did not differ between compartments. When the second compartment contained a C. edentata seedling from a habitat 130 km away or a C. nitida seedling, root dry weight and root length were increased above that of compartments with half-siblings. Whole plant growth also increased in seedlings that experienced competition with the conspecific plant from a distant habitat or from a different species. The results validated the ability of Cycas edentata roots to recognize and then use a plastic response to neighbor root identity. In horticultural settings, planting cycad plants where neighbors are close relatives may reduce plant growth, and planting to ensure neighbors are not close relatives may increase plant growth.
