Corrosion in marine environments poses a challenge for steel and concrete structures due to constant exposure to corrosive elements such as saltwater, oxygen, chlorides, and microorganisms, particularly sulfate-reducing bacteria. These conditions accelerate material deterioration, reducing the durability of infrastructures. This review highlights advancements in corrosion prevention methods, focusing on innovations that include metallic and organic coatings, cementitious composites, and ecological inhibitors. Among the advancements, Zn–Al metallic coatings form sacrificial anodes that preferentially oxidize, protecting steel substrates, while the incorporation of epoxy and polyurethane layers provides impermeable barriers against chloride penetration and moisture ingress. High-ductility cementitious composites enhance resistance by minimizing crack propagation and promoting self-healing through the deposition of calcium carbonate and C–S–H gel. Superhydrophobic surfaces leverage nano and microscale interactions to repel water and prevent biofilm formation, maintaining functionality even after mechanical damage. Ecological inhibitors, such as sodium phosphate, interact chemically with steel surfaces to create protective films, achieving up to 91.7% corrosion inhibition. Additionally, artificial intelligence models have advanced the prediction of corrosion rates, enabling tailored protection strategies. By elucidating these mechanisms, this study highlights sustainable and efficient solutions for extending infrastructure lifespans and enhancing safety and economic viability in marine environments.

O artigo objetiva apresentar as contribuições da Pedagogia Histórico-Crítica e da Psicologia Histórico Cultural ao trabalho educativo no ensino superior a partir das relações entre ensino, aprendizagem e desenvolvimento humano. Compreende-se que se a Pedagogia norteia a seleção de conteúdos e procedimentos didáticos, a Psicologia revela quem é concretamente o destinatário que se apropriará dos conteúdos, por meio dos procedimentos de ensino. A discussão baseia-se em dois movimentos de análise interligados; o primeiro focaliza o professor e sua atividade de ensino em sua dimensão político-pedagógica; o segundo focaliza o estudante pondo em destaque a formação da consciência, que se dá pelo movimento de apreensão das múltiplas determinações da realidade social, por meio da apropriação dos sistemas teórico-conceituais, destacando a atividade coletiva de estudo, pesquisa e intervenção nos âmbitos do ensino superior. Em ambos, docentes e discentes, a formação da “consciência revolucionária” em sua dimensão psicológica somente pode ser conhecida concretamente pela unidade entre consciência social e consciência pessoal. Por isso defende-se que a educação superior necessita dar condições para que o estudante não apenas se aproprie de teorias explicativas sobre os objetos estudados, mas experimente a sua utilização a partir da incorporação dos sistemas conceituais, mobilizando teoricamente os processos psíquicos na decifração e intervenção na realidade.

Studying the evolution of seed morphology and, in turn, the evolution of cultivars across time and space is of fundamental importance to agriculture and archaeology. The identification of ancient and modern grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars is essential for understanding the historical evolution of grape cultivation. Grape seed morphology provides valuable information to explore the evolution of grape cultivars over time and space. The main aim of our study was to build a comprehensive regional database of grape seed morphological traits from modern and archaeological wine cultivars and wild grape species. We aimed to identify which seeds of modern grape cultivars exhibited morphological similarities to archaeological cultivars. This study focused on fifteen distinct modern types of seeds and two archaeological samples from the Byzantine-to-Early Medieval period. We acquired digital images of seeds using a flatbed scanner. For each sample, 100 seeds were randomly selected, and morphometric data on each seed were gathered using ImageJ. Differences among the seed cultivars were investigated using linear discriminant analysis. Archaeological seeds were found to be more similar to cultivated V. vinifera cultivars rather than V. sylvestris populations. Among the cultivated cultivars, Sangiovese and Tosta antica resulted to be cultivars most similar cultivars to the archaeological ones. The morphometric analysis of grape seeds proved to be a valuable resource for investigating the evolution of vine cultivars throughout history. Combining image analysis techniques with genetic data will open new perspectives for studying the origins of and variations in grape cultivars, contributing to the conservation and enhancement of viticultural heritage.

This study primarily focuses on the analysis of volatile organic compounds using GC–MS, with ICP-MS employed as a complementary method to quantify trace metal content. Headspace GC–MS was conducted to detect alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), formaldehyde, aromatic amines derived from azo dyes, perfluorinated carboxylic acids, chlorophenols (PCPs), tetrachlorophenols (TPCs), and phthalates in textile samples of different origin and composition. Principal component analysis was used to detect patterns in the volatilome according to the origin and the textile composition. In addition, seven metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Mo, Cd, Hg, and Pb) were quantified in a subset of samples. The study revealed distinct chemical profiles in textiles based on their origin, with GC–MS identifying key volatile organic compounds and ICP-MS quantifying heavy metals in a subset of samples. Principal component analysis highlighted cotton content as a critical factor in differentiating textile profiles. While most samples adhered to regulatory standards, some exceeded thresholds for metals like copper and nickel, underscoring the need for enhanced quality control in manufacturing processes. By integrating advanced analytical methods, this study provides insights into sustainable and safe textile production, offering valuable benchmarks for regulatory compliance and industry best practices. The outcomes contribute to improving product safety, promoting responsible manufacturing, and supporting regulatory bodies in the enforcement of environmental and safety standards, aligning with the growing demand for sustainability in the textile sector.

Background: This study aimed to validate a method for characterizing and quantifying the multi-elemental profiles of different insect flours to enable their distinction, identification, and quality assessment. The focus was on three insect species: cricket (Acheta domesticus), buffalo worm (Alphitobius diaperinus), and mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). Methods: Mealworms were powdered in the laboratory through mechanical processing. Sample analysis involved acid digestion using a microwave digester, followed by profiling with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). This technique enabled rapid, multi-elemental analysis at trace levels. Chemometric methods, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for exploratory analysis, Covariance Selection-Linear Discriminant Analysis (CovSel-LDA), alongside forward stepwise LDA classification methods, were applied and compared. Results: ICP-MS accurately detected elements at micro trace levels. Both classification models, based on different variable selection methods and externally validated on a test set comprising 45% of the available samples, proved effective in classifying samples based on slightly different pools of trace elements. CovSel-LDA selected Mg and Se, whereas the stepwise-LDA focused on Mg, K, and Mn. Conclusions: the validated methods demonstrated high accuracy and generalizability, supporting their potential use in food industry applications. This model could assist in quality control, facilitating the introduction of insect-based flour into European and international markets as novel foods.

This study focused on optimizing a cold water extraction method to obtain bioactive compounds from chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.), addressing increasing consumer demand for natural products and nutraceuticals. A full-factorial design was employed to evaluate the effects of temperature, time, and chamomile amount on the polyphenolic profile of extracts. The samples were characterized by HPLC-DAD and UV-Vis coupled with chemometrics; the analysis showed that extraction time negatively affected extract quality, as did the interaction between time and temperature. In addition, a significant positive quadratic effect for temperature and a positive coefficient for chamomile amount was found. ASCA was used to assess the UV-Vis profile, offering an alternative untargeted method for understanding the variable effects. The optimal extraction conditions (25 °C, 32 min, and 2.5 g of chamomile) produced samples high in hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids and flavanol derivatives. Using A face-centered design, this study also monitored antioxidant activity via a DPPH scavenging assay, confirming that the optimal conditions yielded samples within the range of maximum antioxidant activity in the studied experimental domain.

In countries where volcanic activity is widespread, fly ash (FA) formation can represent both a waste to be disposed of and a resource of inorganic substances that can be utilized. Among the technologies able to incorporate FA, geopolymers (GP) or inorganic aluminosilicate amorphous materials are very suitable for this purpose. In this study, GP are realized using metakaolin (MK), sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH 8 M), sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3), and FA as filler (20 wt% with respect to MK content). The samples were cured at 25 or 40°C for 24 h and the physicochemical, thermal, and antibacterial properties of this material through the integrity test, weight loss test, Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Kirby-Bauer assay were assessed. Integrity and weight loss tests indirectly revealed the stability of the macroscopic 3D networks and that the curing at 40°C led to more stable GP. The shift of the Si–O–T absorption band (from 1,090 cm−1 of the MK to 1,017–1,012 cm−1 of the specimens with and without FA) in FT-IR spectra suggested the occurrence of the geopolymerizazion reactions, while TGA study confirmed the higher stability of samples cured at 40°C (with a mass loss equal to 7–13% at 800°C under nitrogen atmosphere). Finally, the antimicrobial activity shed light on the ability of the synthesized GP with the filler and treated at 40°C to have a great effect against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) is a well- known plant and at the basis of the culinary tradition of different populations. In Italy, several celery ecotypes, presenting unique peculiarities, are grown by small local producers, and they need to be characterized, in order to be protected and safeguarded. The present work aims at developing a fast and non-destructive method for the discrimination of a common celery (the "Elne" celery) from a typical celery of Abruzzo (Central Italy). The proposed strategy is based on the use of an e-eye tool which allows the collection of images used to infer colorgrams. Initially, a principal component analysis model was used to investigate the trends and outliers in the data. Then, the classification between the common celery (Elne class) and celery from Torricella Peligna (Torricella class) was achieved by a discriminant analysis, conducted by sequential preprocessing through orthogonalization (SPORT) and sequential and orthogonalized covariance selection (SO-CovSel) and by a class-modelling method called soft independent modelling of class analogies (SIMCAs). Among these, the highest accuracy was provided by the strategies, based on the discriminant classifiers, both of which provided a total accuracy of 82% in the external validation.

Abstract Fish stocking is a common management strategy in Brazil, yet no assessment has examined its real extent and features. The present work investigated fish stocking practices in Brazil between 2010 and 2019 to characterize propagule pressure, species composition, the use of non-native species, geographical and temporal trends, environment types, and responsible agencies. Based on information disseminated on the internet, the study detected 1,155 stocking events (ca. 115 events/year). In total, ca. 56.4 million fish were stocked, with an average of ca. 90 thousand fish/event. We found events in all Brazilian regions involving 436 municipalities and 21 states. Most events occurred in the Northeast region (66.3%), which received alone ca. 41 million fish. Reservoirs were the primary target environment, and the public sector conducted most events. Fish stocking involved 63 taxa, including 14 non-native taxa and three hybrids. Considering the events that informed composition, 62.4% released non-native species, which summed 19.7 million fish. These results provide a broad overview of fish stocking practices in Brazil, and reveal that this action is widely disseminated. Its frequent use, associated with the lack of proper criteria and the illegal stocking of non-native species, raise concerns about technical aspects, outcomes, and potential environmental impacts.

A presença da Sociologia no currículo escolar decorre de políticas educacionais, as quais, embasadas na conjuntura política, estabelecem o discurso pedagógico que orienta os objetivos educacionais e reflete na classificação do conhecimento e seu enquadramento, na prática pedagógica. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste texto é analisar a classificação e a integração do ensino de Sociologia e suas repercussões em três períodos históricos, de 1982 a 2022, que exemplificam a defesa, a inclusão e a exclusão da obrigatoriedade da Sociologia, no currículo escolar. Nos três períodos analisados, os dois primeiros elevaram a importância da Sociologia como disciplina escolar. No entanto, o terceiro período marcou uma reviravolta nas conquistas, representando um retrocesso para a educação científica.
