A spent fuel pool is a temporary storage facility designed to store the nuclear fuel assemblies removed from the reactor core. Here, the depleted fuel is vertically arranged in racks structures, accurately spaced to ensure subcriticality safety margins. Until the events occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi power plants, severe accidents in spent fuel pools had never been considered as a major safety concern, mainly because of their slow progression. However, extremely unlikely accident events, aggravated by the loss of site power, highlighted the vulnerability of nuclear fuel stored within spent fuel pools. During these accident sequences, reactor fuel rods can generate enough decay heat to vaporize the coolant around them, causing, during unmitigated scenarios, the uncovering and melting of fuel bundles after several days. In past years, new features have been introduced in the MELCOR code for the evaluation of potential risks associated to accident progression in spent fuel pools. In this paper, the accidental sequence of a loss of cooling accident in a boiling water reactor spent fuel pool is analysed with version 2.2 of the MELCOR code. The spent fuel pool of the Fukushima Daiichi unit 4 has been selected as reference. Main accident events, such as fuel uncovering, claddings oxidation, hydrogen generation, and fission products release, have been analysed assuming the unavailability of safety systems.

Currently, for the EU DEMO, two Breeding Blankets (BBs) have been selected as potential candidates for the integration in the reactor. They are the Water Cooled Lithium Lead and the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed BB concepts. The two BB variants together with the associated ancillary systems drive the design of the overall plant. Therefore, a holistic investigation of integration issues derived by the BB and the installation of its ancillary systems has been performed. The issues related to the water activation due to the 16N and 17N isotopes and the impact on the primary heat transfer systems have been investigated providing guidelines and dedicated solution for the integration of safety devices as isolation valves. The tritium retention and the permeation rates through the blanket and its ancillary systems have been also assessed taking into account different operating points both for the BB and ancillaries and comparing, when possible, the releases with the operating and safety limits. Moreover, the issues related to the tritium start-up inventory as well as the uncertainties on the Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR) due to the integration of the auxiliary systems within the Vacuum Vessel have been also studied. Finally, the impact of the BB concepts on the safety systems like the Vacuum Vessel Pressure Suppression System is described with a particular focus on the different measures that should be implemented according to the considered concept. Activated corrosion products (ACPs) may represent a significant source of radiological hazards in nuclear fusion reactors. Corrosion and erosion phenomena mobilize activated materials which are transported by the working fluid in regions of the cooling system accessed by worker personnel. Predicting contaminant transport in tokamak cooling circuits may benefit radiation exposure assessment, design optimization, waste management, maintenance plan definition, and source terms identification. Several calculation tools have been made available for ACP determination in nuclear systems. Among these, the OSCAR-Fusion code, developed by the CEA (France), allows for predicting ACP generation and transport in closed water-cooled loops for fusion applications. This work aims to show a straightforward sensitivity analysis methodology and uncertainty quantification (UQ). A single ACP assessment involves several neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, geometrical, and water chemistry parameters. Coupling OSCAR-Fusion to RAVEN, a multipurpose framework developed by INL (USA), allows sensitivity and UQ analyses that might provide useful indications to the designers and safety analysts. This work presents a general methodology, showing preliminary results obtained for the EU-DEMO divertor cassette primary heat-transfer systems.

A Demo-Oriented early NEutron Source (DONES) facility for material irradiation with nuclear is currently being designed. DONES aims to produce neutrons with fusion-relevant spectrum and fluence by means of D–Li stripping reactions occurring between a deuteron beam impacting a stable liquid lithium flowing film implementing the target. Given the hazard constituted by the liquid lithium inventory and the potential risk of reactions with water, air, and concrete eventually resulting in fire events, the Target Test Cell (TTC) is filled with helium and the reinforced concrete walls forming the bio-shield are covered with steel liners. A loss of Li in TTC, due to a large break in the Quench Tank, is postulated, and consequences are deterministically studied. With the TTC liner being water-cooled, the impact of the liner temperature rise following a leakage event is evaluated. Two separate MELCOR code models have been defined for the liquid lithium loop and water-cooled loop and are numerically coupled. The amount of leaked inventory dependent on the implemented safety logic and impact on TTC containment is evaluated. The water pressurization pattern within the liner cooling loop is studied to highlight possible risks of lithium–water/concrete reactions.

In this early development phase of the DEMO design the uncertainty affecting many operational and design parameters can modify main outcomes of accident scenario aiming at studying the critical conditions for the vacuum vessel and the contiguous containment volumes. The aim of this paper is to perform a preliminary sensitivity analysis of an accident progression predicted by MELCOR code considering selected parameters as a figure of merit to predict possible code outcomes. The uncertainty band will be evaluated through sensitivity analyses programmed, collected and statistically manipulated through RAVEN software tool. MELCOR and RAVEN have been internally coupled through a new Python code interface developed by Sapienza University of Rome, to perform sensitivity and uncertainty quantification analyses during severe accident transient. The Beyond Design Basis Accident (BDBA) analysis of an ex-vessel loss of coolant accident (LOCA) for the water-cooled lithium lead (WCLL) blanket concept has been simulated with the fusion version of MELCOR 1.8.6 code. The postulated initiating event (PIE) is a double-ended break in the first wall (FW) cooling system distributor ring, with simultaneous failure of the plasma shutdown system. An in-vessel breach of the coolant system occurs because of FW failure, with consequent unmitigated plasma shutdown transient. Sensitivity analysis results have shown that the FW temperature at which plasma in-vessel breach occurs is strongly correlated with the mass of hydrogen produced. The same parameter has also an impact on the overall accident scenario, such as the trigger of VVPSS rupture disks and thus source term mobilization.
