Phase modulation is demonstrated in a quantum Stark effect modulator designed to operate in the mid-infrared at wavelength around 10 $\mu$m. Both phase and amplitude modulation are simultaneously resolved through the measurement of the heterodyne signal arising from the beating of a quantum cascade laser with a highly stabilized frequency comb. The highest measured phase shift is more than 5 degrees with an associated intensity modulation of 5%. The experimental results are in full agreement with our model in which the complex susceptibility is precisely described considering the linear voltage dependent Stark shift of the optical resonance., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Recent contributions showed the benefits of operator filtering for both preconditioning and fast solution strategies. While previous contributions leveraged laplacian-based filters, in this work we introduce and study a different approach leveraging the truncation of appropriately chosen spectral representations of operators' kernels. In this contribution, the technique is applied to the operators of the 2D TE- and TM-electric field integral equations (EFIE). We explore two different spectral representations for the 2D Green's function that lead to two distinct types of filtering of the EFIE operators. Quasi-Helmholtz decompositions are fundamental tools in integral equation modeling of electromagnetic problems because of their ability of rescaling solenoidal and non-solenoidal components of solutions, operator matrices, and radiated fields. These tools are however incapable, per se, of modifying the refinement-dependent spectral behavior of the different operators and often need to be combined with other preconditioning strategies. This paper introduces the new concept of filtered quasi-Helmholtz decompositions proposing them in two incarnations: the filtered Loop-Star functions and the quasi-Helmholtz Laplacian filters. Because they are capable of manipulating large parts of the operators' spectra, new families of preconditioners and fast solvers can be derived from these new tools. A first application to the case of the frequency and h-refinement preconditioning of the electric field integral equation is presented together with numerical results showing the practical effectiveness of the newly proposed decompositions.

This paper focuses on fast direct solvers for integral equations in the low-to-moderate-frequency regime obtained by leveraging preconditioned first kind or second kind operators regularized with Laplacian filters. The spectral errors arising from boundary element discretizations are properly handled by filtering that, in addition, allows for the use of low-rank representations for the compact perturbations of all operators involved. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the approaches and their effectiveness in the direct solution of integral equations.

Inverse source approaches have shown their relevance for several applications in the past years. They rely on the solution of an ill-posed problem where near-field/current data is reconstructed starting from far-field (or less informative field) information. Standard strategies, including the physically constrained ones using Love conditions, result in linear systems to be pseudoinverted which are still ill-conditioned due to the lack of information from the evanescent fields. In this work we present a generalized pseudoinverse for those problems that allows the inclusion of extra constraints from the evanescent field space, when available. This is obtained by dropping some of the standard Moore-Penrose (MP) requirements and using the resulting degrees of freedom to obtain a generalized pseudoinverse that shows favorable performance in several cases of practical interest.

This work presents a fast direct solver strategy for electromagnetic integral equations in the high-frequency regime. The new scheme relies on a suitably preconditioned combined field formulation and results in a single skeleton form plus identity equation. This is obtained after a regularization of the elliptic spectrum through the extraction of a suitably chosen equivalent circulant problem. The inverse of the system matrix is then obtained by leveraging the Woodbury matrix identity, the low-rank representation of the extracted part of the operator, and fast circulant algebra yielding a scheme with a favorable complexity and suitable for the solution of multiple right-hand sides. Theoretical considerations are accompanied by numerical results both of which are confirming and showing the practical relevance of the newly developed scheme.

This work focuses on the preconditioning and DC stabilization of the time domain electric field integral equation discretized in time with the convolution quadrature method. The standard formulation of the equation suffers from severe ill-conditioning for large time steps and refined meshes, in addition to DC instabilities plaguing standard solutions for late time steps. This work addresses all these issues by preconditioning the TD-EFIE operator matrices with a Calder\'on approach. The realization of high-frequency unipolar quantum optoelectronic devices enables the demonstration of high bitrate free space data transmission in the second atmospheric window. Data-bits are written onto the laser emission using a large bandwidth amplitude modulator that operates by shifting the absorption of an optical transition in and out of the laser frequency.

The Time Domain-Electric Field Integral Equation (TD-EFIE) and its differentiated version are widely used to simulate the transient scattering of a time dependent electromagnetic field by a Perfect Electrical Conductor (PEC). The time discretization of the TD-EFIE can be achieved by a space-time Galerkin approach or, as it is considered in this contribution, by a convolution quadrature using Implicit Runge-Kutta methods. The solution is then computed using the Marching-On-in-Time (MOT) algorithm. The differentiated TD-EFIE has two problems: (i) the system matrix suffers from ill-conditioning when the time step increases (low frequency breakdown) and (ii) it suffers from the DC instability, i.e. the formulation allows for the existence of spurious solenoidal currents that grow slowly in the solution. In this work, we show that (i) and (ii) can be alleviated by leveraging quasi-Helmholtz projectors to separate the Helmholtz components of the induced current and rescale them independently. Fast and accurate resolution of electromagnetic problems via the \ac{BEM} is oftentimes challenged by conditioning issues occurring in three distinct regimes: (i) when the frequency decreases and the discretization density remains constant, (ii) when the frequency is kept constant while the discretization is refined and (iii) when the frequency increases along with the discretization density. While satisfactory remedies to the problems arising in regimes (i) and (ii), respectively based on Helmholtz decompositions and Calder\'on-like techniques have been presented, the last regime is still challenging. In fact, this last regime is plagued by both spurious resonances and ill-conditioning, the former can be tackled via combined field strategies and is not the topic of this work. In this contribution new symmetric scalar and vectorial electric type formulations that remain well-conditioned in all of the aforementioned regimes and that do not require barycentric discretization of the dense electromagnetic potential operators are presented along with a spherical harmonics analysis illustrating their key properties.

In this contribution, a discretisation of the IBC EFIE is introduced that (i) yields the correct solution at arbitrarily small frequencies, (ii) requires for its solution a number of matrix vector products bounded as the frequency tends to zero and as the mesh density increases. The low frequency stabilisation is based on a projector-based discrete Helmholtz splitting, rescaling, and recombination that depends on the low frequency behaviour of both the EFIE operator and the surface impedance condition. The dense mesh stabilisation is a modifcation of the Perfect Electric Conductor operator preconditioning approach taking into account the effect on the singular value spectrum of the IBC term.

Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S (S >= 1/2) Ising model on a three-dimensional (3D) decorated lattice with a layered magnetic structure are investigated within the framework of a precise mapping relationship to the simple spin-1/2 Ising model on the tetragonal lattice. This mapping correspondence yields for the layered Ising model of mixed spins plausible results either by adopting the conjectured solution for the spin-1/2 Ising model on the orthorhombic lattice [Z.-D. Zhang, Philos. Mag. 87 (2007) 5309-5419] or by performing extensive Monte Carlo simulations for the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the tetragonal lattice. It is shown that the critical behaviour markedly depends on a relative strength of axial zero-field splitting parameter, inter- and intra-layer interactions. The striking spontaneous order captured to the 'quasi-1D' spin system is found in a restricted region of interaction parameters, where the zero-field splitting parameter forces all integer-valued decorating spins towards their 'non-magnetic' spin state., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, Monte Carlo simulation data has been added to this revised version

Ground-state phase diagram of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on doubly decorated planar lattices is examined using the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Magnetic properties of a ternary-spin Ising model on the decorated square lattice are studied within a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Depending on the mutual ratio between exchange interactions and the single-ion anisotropy, there appear six different phases in the ground state. Phase diagram of the spin-1 quantum Heisenberg model with both exchange as well as single-ion anisotropy is constructed within the framework of pair approximation formulated as a variational procedure based on the Gibbs-Bogoliubov inequality. In this form adapted variational approach is used to obtain the results equivalent with the Oguchi's pair approximation. The spin-1 anisotropic Heisenberg model with a single-ion anisotropy is studied using the Oguchi's pair approximation. The mixed spin-(1/2, S) Ising model on the union jack (centered square) lattice is investigated by establishing the mapping relationship with its corresponding eight-vertex model. An interplay between the nearest-neighbour interaction, the competing next-nearest-neighbour interaction and the single-ion anisotropy gives rise to a rather complex critical behaviour displayed in the reentrant phase transitions, the weak universal critical behaviour, as well as, a presence of first- and second-order phase transitions. The most interesting finding to emerge from the present study relates to a variation of the weak-universal critical exponents along the line of bicritical points, which is being twice as large for the mixed spin-(1/2, S) systems with the integer spin-S atoms as for the ones with the half-odd-integer spin-S atoms., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures
