WHO and UNICEF highlight vaccination as the most cost-effective method of prevention of infectious diseases. An effective public health strategy requires efficient tracking of vaccination to assess coverage, safety, and efficacy of these vaccines. Paper-based immunization records are still being used in most low and middle-income countries. Adequate Electronic Logistic Management Information Systems, Immunization Registries and Records are crucial for proper data collection and analysis, and for making better decisions at an individual and at a population level. In this paper we share our experience in the redesign of an interoperable immunization record to track vaccination, including the recently developed vaccines for the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).

The Provincial Tuberculosis Commission of Havana, Cuba, a multi-speciality committee, assists clinicians in diagnosing bacteriologically negative tuberculosis (TB). At its weekly meetings, clinicians present the files of suspected TB cases for discussion, diagnosis and recommendations. This prospective study assessed the validity of the diagnoses made by the Commission by comparing the diagnoses made with diagnoses ascertained after one year of follow-up. Between October 2002 and December 2003, 126 patients suspected to have TB but who were bacteriologically negative completed diagnostic work at the Commission. Fifty-three (42%) were diagnosed as TB cases. The definite diagnosis of 116 patients (92%) was ascertained after one year of follow-up. Six patients diagnosed by the Commission as TB cases were suffering from other diseases, while one patient diagnosed with pneumonia had a definite diagnosis of pulmonary TB. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the Commission were 98% (95% CI 93-100) and 92% (95% CI 85-98), respectively. The Provincial Tuberculosis Commission of Havana can be considered a valuable tool for the diagnosis of TB in patients suspected of TB but who are bacteriologically negative. A comparable approach, adapted to the local conditions, could prove useful in other epidemiological and healthcare settings.

A study of the cross-reactivity among somatic and excretory-secretory antigens of the third stage larvae of Anisakis simplex s.l. and somatic antigens of other ascarid nematodes (Ascaris lumbricoides, A. suum, Toxocara canis, Anisakis physeteris, Hysterothylacium aduncum and H. fabri) was carried out by immunoblotting. It was revealed a high degree of cross-reactivity among ascarids in the 30 and > 212 kDa range by using sera against somatic and excretory-secretory antigens of A. simplex s.l. It has been revealed also specific components of the Anisakis genus (< 7.2, 9, 19 and 25 kDa) that will be interesting in diagnosis.

Separate surveys of Thoroughbred, Paint, and Arabian mare owners revealed a higher than expected rate of foal rejection in Arabian mares. A behavioural history form was submitted by owners of foal rejecting and nonrejecting Arabian mares, and maternal behaviour and management practices compared. Four generation pedigrees of rejecting and nonrejecting Arabian mares were also examined. Foal rejecting mares were more likely to avoid, threaten, squeal at, chase, bite, and kick their foals post partum than nonrejecting mares. Nonrejecting mares were more likely to lick, nicker and defend their foals post partum than rejecting mares. No statistically significant relationship was found between foal rejection and the type of breeding method (natural vs. artificial insemination), the presence of people at birth, the presence of nearby horses at birth, or assistance of the first nursing bout. The presence at least once of 1 of 2 related sires was statistically higher in the pedigrees of rejecting vs. nonrejecting mares. Inherited and learned or environmental factors are likely to affect the expression of foal rejection behaviour.

Objective: To compare the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) between low-income Mexicans from Mexico City and Mexican-Americans from San Antonio, Texas., Research Design and Methods: We designed a cross-sectional population-based study in low-income neighborhoods of Mexico City and San Antonio. The men and non-pregnant women included in the study had NIDDM and were between 35 and 64 years of age. Ophthalmologic evaluation was performed in 414 patients, 204 in San Antonio and 210 in Mexico City. Seven field standard stereophotographs of each eye were obtained, adapting the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study protocol, and graded at the Fundus Photograph Reading Center of the University of Wisconsin., Results: Early nonproliferative DR occurred in 37 (17.6%) and 39 (19.1%) patients in Mexico City and San Antonio, respectively. Moderate-to-severe nonproliferative DR occurred in 55 (26.2%) and 37 (18.1%) patients in Mexico City and San Antonio, respectively, and proliferative DR occurred in 12 (5.7%) and 7 (3.4%) patients in Mexico City and San Antonio, respectively. Using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis with DR as the dependent variable, age, duration of disease, and fasting glucose concentration were positively and significantly associated with retinopathy, whereas city, systolic blood pressure, and other selected metabolic variables were not. We defined moderate-to-severe DR to include the categories of moderate-to-severe nonproliferative and proliferative DR. For this combined category, Mexico City patients with diabetes had a significantly higher prevalence (P < 0.01) than those from San Antonio when analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis (odds ratio for Mexico City/San Antonio, 1.72; 95% CI 1.10-2.70)., Conclusions: Overall prevalence of DR is similar in both cities. However, moderate-to-severe DR is significantly higher in Mexico City.

Barking is a normal and common method of communication in the domestic dog, but it can become a problem behavior in specific circumstances. Excessive barking can be a mild annoyance or a severe problem, particularly if the owner is under pressure from other people to stop the dog's behavior. Preventive measures could reduce the likelihood of the behavior becoming problematic. Correctly assessing the motivation behind a dog's excessive barking once it becomes a problem is crucial to the implementation of a successful treatment regimen. Veterinarians should be prepared to give practical advice to clients in both instances, because the recommendations could improve the chance of the dog staying in the household.

Certain behavior problems can be aggravated by the presence of conspecifics. Behavior problems that can occur in multiple-dog households as a result of social facilitation are discussed, along with behavior modification and pharmacologic treatments necessary to manage the problem.
