Un grupo de cuatro ovinos sanos se inmunizó con veneno de Bothrops asper, para estudiar el desarrollo de la respuesta inmune, inducida por la aplicación de un esquema de hiperinmunización. Se tomaron muestras de sangre cada siete días en nueve oportunidades, con el suero obtenido se realizaron pruebas de neutralización en ratones. Se determinó la DE50, la cual se expresó en µg de veneno neutralizado por ml de suero. Simultáneamente se observaron las condiciones generales de los ovinos durante el esquema de hiperinmunización, no presentándose alteraciones generales ni locales como consecuencia de la inoculación del veneno. En los resultados se observaron variaciones individuales en la magnitud de la elevación del título de anticuerpos y rasgos comunes en el comportamiento de las curvas desarrolladas. El título promedio óptimo (705,5 µg/ml), fue obtenido el día 21 posterior a la primera inoculación. Para ese momento, el ovino con título más alto fue de 840µg/ml y el más bajo, de 593 µg/ml. El promedio más bajo (308 µg/ml) fue observado el día 56. Se recomienda que los animales que serán utilizados en la producción comercial de antiveneno sean evaluados individualmente y seleccionados con base a una respuesta inmune satisfactoria. A group of four (4) healthy male sheep were immunized with Bothrops asper venom, in order to study the development of the immune response induced by the application of a hiperimmunization protocol. Blood samples were taken from the sheep every seven days in nine different opportunities. With the resultant serum, neutralization tests were done in mice. ED50 was calculated and expressed in µg of neutralized venom per ml of serum, at the same time, general health conditions of sheep were observed during the hiperimmunization protocol. No general or local alterations of health were present as consequence of venom inoculations. Individual variations in the magnitude of the increase of antibody titles were observed in the obtained results. None the less common features in the antibody title curves were also recorded. The mean optimal average (705,5 µg/ml) was obtained on day 21 after the first challenge. At that time, the individual sheep with the highest value was 840 µg/ml and the lowest was 593 µg/ml; the lowest average of all samples (308 µg/ml ) was observed on day 56. Un estudio histopatológico de órganos linfoides, fue realizado en 149 pollos de engorde jóvenes con edades comprendidas entre 6 y 31 días, provenientes de granjas comerciales del estado Zulia, Venezuela; de los cuales 68,5% (102) resultaron serológicamente positivos a la Anemia Infecciosa Aviar (A.I.A), encontrándose lesiones características de esta enfermedad en médula ósea (49,7%), timo (6,7%), bolsa de Fabricio (54,4%), bazo (16,8%) y tonsilas cecales (10,7%). Las lesiones observadas consistieron en: aplasia y atrofia de médula ósea, caracterizada por deplesión leve a severa del tejido hematopoyetico con proliferación de tejido adiposo (Panmieloptisis), atrofia en timo, bolsa de Fabricio, bazo y en tonsilas cecales, caracterizada por deplesión linfoide leve a severa e hiperplasia de células reticulares. En algunos casos de atrofia severa en la médula ósea, se observaron pequeños cuerpos de inclusión intranucleares eosinófilos en células hematopoyéticas inmaduras de la médula ósea, en timocitos y células reticulares del timo. Hubo una correlación significativa entre la presencia de anticuerpos y las lesiones de la médula ósea (r=0,541 1; P=0,0001), lo que permitió establecer la posibilidad de infección por el agente de la A.I.A y la aparición de la forma clínica de la enfermedad en el 9,40% (141/49) de las aves examinadas, las que mostraron anemia. La ausencia de lesiones histopatológicas en algunas aves seropositivas, sugieren la presencia de anticuerpos maternales en estos pollos, indicando indirectamente una infección latente de sus progenitoras. Los resultados de este estudio permiten inferir la probabilidad de que el virus de la A.I.A esté presente tanto en la región como en el país, a nivel de granjas reproductoras y de pollos de engorde, produciendo por ende formas clínicas y subclínicas de la enfermedad, las cuales pueden ser la causa de los problemas sanitarios y de pérdidas económicas de nuestra industria avícola. Sin embargo, la confirmación definitiva de esta enfermedad, sólo será posible con el aislamiento e identificación del virus de A.I.A. A histopathologic study were realized in lymphoids organs (thymus, bursa of Fabricius, spleen, caecal tonsil and bono marrow) of wese realized 149 chickens between six to thirty one days age from commercial farms of Zulia State, Venezuela 68.5% (102) were positive by serology to Avian Infectious Anemia (A.I.A) showing characteristic lesions of this disease in bono marrow (49.66%), thymus (6.71%). bursa (54.36%), spleen (16.78%) and caecal tonsils (10.74%). The microscopy lesions consisted in aplasia and atrophy of bono marrow, characterized by mild to severe depletion of haematopoietic cells with proliferation of adipose tissue (Panmyelophthisis), atrophy of thymus, bursa of fabricius, spleen, and caecal tonsils, occasioned by mild to severe lymphoid depletion with hyperplasia of reticular cells. In soma cases of severe atrophy in bono marrow and thymus, small eosinohpilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in immature haematopoietic bono marrow cells, in thymocytes and reticular cells of thymus. The detection of a significant correlation between the presence of antibodies and the lesions of the bone marrow (r=0.5411; P=0.0001), suggest the presence of infections by the AIA agent and the 9.40% (14/149) with clinical signs of the disease in examined birds, which showed anemia, haematopoietic tissue lesions and serum antibodies. The absence of histophatologic lesions in soma seropositive chickens, suggests the presence of maternal antibodies in these chickens, which indicates the evident infection of their progenitors. The results of this study permit infer the probability AIA virus could be presented not only region but in the country in the breeder of chickens farms, with clinical and subclinical forms of the disease. This could be the cause of the sanitary problems and economical losses in the poultry industry. However, the definitive confirmation of this desease, will be possible only isolation and Identification the AIA virus. 274 - 282 Bimestral

En este trabajo se estudió el desarrollo de la respuesta inmune inducida por la aplicación de un esquema de hiperinmunización preestablecido contra el veneno de Crotalus durissus cumanensis, a un grupo de cinco ovinos sanos, nunca antes expuestos a este veneno. Se colectaron muestras de sangre cada siete días por un periodo de 70 días. Con el suero obtenido, se realizaron pruebas de neutralización en ratones, utilizando una dosis reto de veneno de 3 DL50. Se determinó la DE50, la cual se expresó en μg de veneno neutralizado por ml de suero. En los resultados se observaron variaciones individuales en la magnitud de la elevación del título de anticuerpos y rasgos comunes en el comportamiento de las curvas desarrolladas. El título promedio óptimo (602 μg/ml), fue obtenido el día 21 posterior a la primera inoculación. Para ese momento el ovino con título más alto fue de 978 μg/ml y el más bajo de 338 μg/ml. El promedio más bajo (115,2 μg/ml) fue observado el día 70. Se propone que cada ovino debe ser evaluado y seleccionado en base a una respuesta inmune satisfactoria, antes de ser utilizado para la producción de antiveneno. This research deals with the induced immune response by applying a pre-established hyperimmunization schedule against Crotalus durissus cumanensis venom to a group of five healthy ovines, which were not previously exposed to this venom. Blood samples were collected every 7 days during a period of 70 days. Sera obtained was used for neutralization test on mice, by using a challenge dosage of 3 LD50. The ED50 was found and expressed as pg of the neutralized venom by each ml of sera. Results revealed individual variation in the magnitude of the antibody titers rise as well as, in common features on the curve pattern. The optimum average titer (602 μg/ml), was found on day 21 after the first inoculation which corresponded with the third day after the last challenge. By this time the ovine with the highest titer reached 978 μg/ml whereas the lowest was 338 μg/ml. On the other hand, the lowest average (115.2 μg/ml) was observed on day 70. Results suggest that each ovine must be evaluated and selected on the bases of a satisfactory immune response, before its utilization for antivenom production. 388 - 394 Bimestral

Se elaboran los medios para el crecimiento bacteriológico a partir de harina de cují (Prosopis juliflora) al 10%, como fuente nutritiva, la cual fue obtenida del fruto de cují. Lo medios fueron preparados hirviendo la harina de cují en agua destilada, filtrada y usada como medio líquido (Caldo Cují: C.C.) y como medio sólido (Agar Cují: A.C.). Ambos fueron utilizados con el pH inicial (6.4) o ajustados a pH 7.2 con NaOH. El medio sólido fue preparado con 0.5% de agar-agar a pH 7.2. Todos estos medios fueron probados usando once cepas bacterianas: cuatro Gram positivos (dos pocos y dos bacilos) y siete Gram negativos. Estas bacterias fueron agrupadas como: Exigentes: Streptococcus pyogenes y Bordetella bronchiséptica; Medianamente Exigentes: Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., shigella sp., Klebsiella sp. Y Proteus sp.; y com no Exigentes: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia colí, Bacillus subtilis y Bacillus cereus. La respuesta, en términos de crecimiento, fue leída alas 24 y 48 horas. El Streptococcus pyogenes tuvo buen crecimiento a las 48 horas, no así la Bordetella bronchiséptica cuyo crecimiento fue muy pobre. De las bacterias agrupadas como medianamente exigentes el Staphylococcus aureus y el Proteus sp. Tuvieron crecimiento irregular y pobre. Las últimas, agrupadas como no exigentes, tuvieron muy buen crecimiento aún a las 24 horas. Two media for Bacteriological growth were made from Cuji (Prosopis juliflora) flour at 10% concentration as a nutritive source, which was obtained from the complete pod of cuji. Media were prepared by boiling the cuji flour in destiled water, filtered and used as a liquid medium (Cuji Infusion: C.I.) and as a solid medium (Cuji Agar: C.A.). Both of them with original pH (6.4) or adjusted to 7.2 with NaOH. The solid media was prepared with 0.5% agar-agar at pH 7.2. All these media were tested using eleven bacterial strain; four positives Gram (Two coccus and two bacillus) and seven negatives Gram. These bacterias were grouping as Exigent: Streptococcus pyogenes and Bordetella bronchiséptica; as Moderate Exigent: Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., Klebsiella sp. And Proteus sp.; and as No Exigent: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus. The response, in terms of growth, was readed at 24 and 48 hours. Streptococcus pyogenes had a good growth at 48 hours, but the growth of Bordetella bronchiséptica was poor. From bacterials grouped as moderate exigent, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus sp.
