During May 2022, a short-lived seismic swarm affected a small area of the Chianti fiorentino region about 15 km south of Florence. The two strongest earthquakes of the swarm reached MW 3.7; nonetheless, they were distinctly felt up to distances of several tens of kilometers, causing residents’ concern. Moreover, the presence of a huge artistic heritage in the surrounding areas raises questions about its vulnerability to even minor ground shaking. In order to improve knowledge of the location and size of active seismogenic structures in the vicinity of Florence, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) responded promptly through the SISMIKO emergency group. On the 4th of May, the day after the beginning of the sequence, five mobile seismic stations were installed at close range from the epicentral area and integrated into the INGV permanent monitoring system. This report describes the procedures related to: (i) deployment, maintenance and dismission of the mobile network; (ii) management and quality control of the acquired data. Finally, in the frame of the seismo-tectonic context of the area, we present a preliminary overview about the spatial features and temporal evolution of the swarm which had a slight resumption in August 2022, with a magnitude 2.7 event and its aftershocks., Nel mese di maggio 2022 è iniziato uno sciame sismico, di breve durata, che ha interessato una piccola area del Chianti fiorentino a circa 15 km a sud dalla città di Firenze. I due terremoti più energetici hanno avuto una magnitudo momento pari a 3.7; nonostante la magnitudo modesta, tali eventi sono stati avvertiti distintamente fino a distanze di diverse decine di chilometri, e hanno destato preoccupazione nella popolazione prossima all’area epicentrale. Inoltre, dato l’ingente patrimonio artistico presente nel capoluogo toscano, questo episodio ha sollevato interrogativi sulla sua vulnerabilità anche a scuotimenti del suolo di piccola entità. Al fine di migliorare le conoscenze sulla ubicazione e le dimensioni delle strutture sismogenetiche attive in prossimità di Firenze, l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) è intervenuto nell’area interessata dallo sciame attraverso il Gruppo Operativo (GO) di emergenza SISMIKO. Il 4 maggio, giorno successivo all’inizio dello sciame, cinque stazioni sismiche mobili sono state installate a distanza ravvicinata dall’area epicentrale, e integrate nel sistema di monitoraggio permanente INGV. Questo lavoro descrive le procedure relative a: (i) l’installazione, la manutenzione e la disinstallazione della rete sismica mobile; (ii) la gestione e il controllo di qualità dei dati acquisiti. Infine, vengono presentate, in riferimento al contesto sismotettonico dell’area, le caratteristiche spaziali e l’evoluzione temporale dello sciame, che ha presentato una piccola ripresa nell’attività sismica ad agosto del 2022, con un terremoto di magnitudo locale 2.7 e successive repliche.

This report describes the state of the art of the installation techniques for seismic stations developed by the Seismology Group and the Seismology Laboratory at the INGV branch in Pisa, with examples of applications taken from long‐duration field experiments carried out in different areas of Tuscany, such as Monte Amiata and the Mugello basin. Our goal was to develop a low‐cost infrastructure, portable and easily adaptable to different terrains, suitable for hosting a variety of real‐time seismic stations. In addition to improving the structural resistance of the deployment, we also developed applications for the remote monitoring of the state of health of the seismic stations, which allowed a more efficient maintenance of the instrumentation. The proposed type of installation has proved to be sufficiently robust and suitable for installations with a temporal duration of a few years, and in agreement with the expected targets, as proved by the analyses carried out during and at the end of the experiments in which they were used., Questo rapporto tecnico descrive lo stato dell’arte delle modalità di installazione delle stazioni sismiche utilizzato dal gruppo di sismologia sperimentale e dal Laboratorio di Sismologia della Sezione INGV di Pisa, con esempi e risultati tratti da pluriennali applicazioni in esperimenti di ricerca effettuati in diverse zone della Toscana, principalmente nelle aree del Monte Amiata e del Mugello. L’obiettivo del gruppo è stato quello di sviluppare delle infrastrutture a basso costo con caratteristiche di facile trasportabilità e di elevata adattabilità al suolo atte a ospitare stazioni sismiche ad alte prestazioni trasmesse in real‐time. Gli interventi di manutenzione necessari sulle infrastrutture temporanee sono tipicamente più frequenti rispetto a quelli richiesti dai siti permanenti, ed è proprio per ottimizzare queste attività (oltre a migliorare la tenuta strutturale delle installazioni) che sono stati sviluppati dei semplici applicativi di monitoraggio rivolti a rendere più efficienti le campagne di ripristino del funzionamento della strumentazione sismica. Questa tipologia di installazione si è dimostrata essere sufficientemente robusta e adatta per installazioni con durata temporale di alcuni anni, in linea con gli obiettivi prefissati a seguito delle analisi effettuate durante e al termine degli esperimenti in cui sono state impiegate.

Within the geodynamic context of the Northern Apennines (Italy), one of the most relevant seismogenic areas is the Mugello basin (NorthEastern Tuscany). The area has a welldocumented record of seismicity; the two major historical earthquakes occurred in 1542 (Mw=6.0) and in 1919 (Mw=6.4). The proximity of the Mugello Basin to densely urbanized areas and the potential impact of strong earthquakes on the cultural heritage in the nearby (~30km) city of Florence makes a better knowledge of the seismicity in that area an important target. Following this argument, by mid2019 we deployed 9 temporary stations within and around the Mugello basin, complementing the permanent monitoring networks currently operating in the area. This report describes the details of the temporary network deployment and shows sample recordings and locations from a Mw=4.5 earthquake which struck the NW margin of the basin on Dec. 9, 2019.

This paper describes the preliminary results of seismic survey performed in the area of Sos­Enattos mine (Lula, NU), by installing a linear array consisting of five short­term mobile stations. The aim was to acquire both environmental seismic noise signals and signals from an active seismic source generated by the blast of explosive charges placed inside the mine. The spectral analyses of seismic noise highlight the presence of a dominant low­frequency peak due to the marine microsism. A propagation velocity of P waves equal to 4500 m/s was estimated by analyzing the first arrivals of the seismic signal deriving from the explosion. Finally, using techniques of analysis of the local seismic response it was possible to obtain preliminary indications on the structure of the subsoil., Questo articolo descrive i risultati preliminari di una campagna di misura sismica condotta all’interno del complesso minerario dismesso di Sos­Enattos (Lula, NU), mediante l’installazione di un array lineare costituito da cinque stazioni mobili a corto periodo. L’obiettivo della campagna è stato quello di acquisire sia segnali di noise sismico ambientale sia segnali provenienti da una sorgente sismica attiva generata dal brillamento di alcune cariche esplosive all’interno delle attuali gallerie della miniera. Le analisi spettrali del noise sismico evidenziano la presenza di un picco dominante a bassa frequenza dovuto al microsisma marino. Analizzando le prime fasi di arrivo del segnale sismico derivante dall’esplosione è stata stimata la velocità di propagazione delle onde P pari a circa 4500 m/s. Infine, utilizzando tecniche di analisi della risposta sismica locale è stato possibile ottenere indicazioni preliminari sulla struttura del sottosuolo.

The phenylethanoids rostkovianoside, 6′-O-acetylcrassifolioside and the flavonoid rutin 3‴-acetate, were isolated from the methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne. The structures of these previously undescribed compounds were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data. The acetylation of rutin was also carried out and four ester derivatives were spectroscopically characterized. Finally, a chromatographic method was established to easily identify the acetylated position.
