Abstract

An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 A MeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract

The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction 40Ca+12C at 25 MeV per nucleon bombarding energy was used to produce α-emission sources. From a careful selection of these sources provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited 16O, 20Ne and 24Mg is reported. Abstract

This article publicly releases three-dimensional reconstructions of the local Universe gravitational field below z=0.8 that were computed using the CosmicFlows-4 catalog of 56,000 galaxy distances and its sub-sample of 1,008 type Ia supernovae distances. The article also provides measurements of the growth rate of structure using the pairwise correlation of radial peculiar velocities f sigma8 = 0.38(+/-0.04) (ungrouped CF4), f sigma8 = 0.36(+/-0.05) (grouped CF4), f sigma8 = 0.30(+/-0.06) (SNIa) and of the bulk flow in the 3D reconstructed Local Universe of 230 +/- 136 km s-1 at 300 Mpc of distance from the observer. The exploration of 10,000 reconstructions gives that the distances delivered by the Cosmicflows-4 catalog are compatible with a Hubble constant of H0 = 74.5 +/- 0.1 (grouped CF4), H0 = 75.0 +/- 0.35 (ungrouped CF4) and H0 = 75.5 +/- 0.95 (CF4 SNIa subsample)., Submitted A&A Oct 31st, 2022 / (AA/2022/45331) / Accepted January 2023 All Figures and values updated after the december 2022 major correction in CF4 catalog

Abstract

The high-spin states of the neutron-rich Ga81, with three valence protons outside a Ni78 core, were measured. The measurement involved prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments isotopically identified using the combination of the variable mode spectrometer (VAMOS++) and the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA). The new γ-ray transitions, observed in coincidence with Ga81 ions, and the corresponding level scheme do not confirm the high-spin levels reported earlier. The newly observed high-spin states in Ga81 are interpreted using the results of state-of-the-art large-scale shell model (LSSM) calculations. The lower excitation energy levels are understood as resulting from the recoupling of three valence protons to the closed doubly magic core, while the highest excitation energy levels correspond to excitations of the magic N=50 neutron core. These results support the doubly magic character of Ni78 and the persistence of the N=50 shell closure but also highlight the presence of strong proton-neutron correlations associated with the promotion of neutrons across the magic N=50 shell gap, only few nucleons away from Ni78.

International audience; In nuclear thermodynamics, the determination of the excitation energy of hot nuclei is a fundamental experimental problem. Instrumental physicists have been trying to solve this problem for several years by building the most exhaustive 4π detector arrays and perfecting their calorimetry techniques. In a recent paper, a proposal for a new calorimetry, called “3D calorimetry”, was made. It tries to optimize the separation between the particles and fragments emitted by the quasiprojectile and the other possible contributions. This can be achieved by determining the experimental probability for a given nucleus of a nuclear reaction to be emitted by the quasiprojectile. It has been developed for the INDRA data. In the present work, we wanted to dissect and validate this new method of characterization of a hot quasiprojectile. So we tried to understand and control it completely to determine these limits. Using the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration (HIPSE) event generator and a software simulating the functioning of INDRA, we were able to achieve this goal and provide a quantitative estimation of the quality of the quasiprojectile characterization.

Abstract

Background: The isovector part of the nuclear equation of state remains partly unknown and is the subject of many studies. The degree of equilibration between the two main collision partners in heavy ion reactions may be used to study the equation of state since it is connected to isospin (N/Z) transport properties of nuclear matter. Purpose: We aim to test chemical equilibrium attainment by measuring isotopic characteristics of emitted elements as a function of impact parameter. Method: We study four Xe136,124+Sn124,112 reactions at 32 MeV/nucleon. The data were acquired with the INDRA detector at the GANIL (Caen, France) facility. Combined (projectile+target) systems are identical for two studied reactions, therefore it is possible to study the path towards chemical equilibrium from different neutron to proton ratio (N/Z) entrance channels. The study is limited to identified isotopes detected in the forward part of the center of mass in order to focus on the evolution of projectile-like fragment isotopic content and the benefit of excellent detection performances of the forward part of the apparatus. Results: Light charged particle productions, multiplicities, and abundance ratios dependence against impact parameter are studied. It is measured to almost identical mean characteristics for the two Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions. Comparing all four studied systems it is shown that mean values evolve from projectile N/Z to projectile+target N/Z dependence. Those identical mean characteristics concern all light charged particles except He3 whose mean behavior is strongly different. Conclusions: Our inclusive analysis (no event selection) shows that N/Z equilibration between the projectile-like and the target-like is realized to a high degree for central collisions. The light charged particle production mean value difference between Xe124+Sn124 and Xe136+Sn112 systems for central collisions is of the order of a few %. This slight difference could be explained by pre-equilibrium particle emission whose intensity may differ for the two reactions. This point is demonstrated using He3 mean characteristics whose production takes place before chemical equilibrium attainment. The realized N/Z balance between projectile-like and target-like does not imply a pure two-body mechanism. Indeed a midrapidity production of light charged particle does exist and its N/Z is different as compared to the projectile-like one: it is n enriched. This point is touched using He6 midrapidity production which is favored by the drift phenomenon.

Abstract

In the domain of Fermi energy, the hot nucleus temperature can be determined by using the energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles. But this method of measurement is not without difficulties both theoretical and experimental. The presented study aims to disentangle the respective influences of different factors on the quality of this measurement : the physics, the detection (a 4? detector array as INDRA) and the experimental procedure. This analysis demonstrates the possibility of determining from an energy spectrum, with an accuracy of about 10 %, the true apparent temperature felt by a given type of particle emitted by a hot nucleus. Three conditions are however necessary : have a perfect detector of particles, an important statistics and very few secondary emissions. According to the GEMINI event generator, for hot nuclei of intermediate mass, only deuterons and tritons could fill these conditions. This temperature can allow to trace back to the initial temperature by using an appropriate method. This determination may be better than 15 %. With a real experimental device, an insufficient angular resolution and topological distortions caused by the detection can damage spectra to the point to make very difficult a correct determination of the apparent temperature. Abstract

An abnormal production of events with almost equal-sized fragments was theoretically proposed as a signature of spinodal instabilities responsible for nuclear multifragmentation in the Fermi energy domain. On the other hand finite size effects are predicted to strongly reduce this abnormal production. High statistics quasifusion hot nuclei produced in central collisions between Xe and Sn isotopes at 32 and 45 AMeV incident energies have been used to definitively establish, through the experimental measurement of charge correlations, the presence of spinodal instabilities. Abstract

Relatively neutron-rich thorium isotopes lie at the heart of a nuclear region of nuclei exhibiting octupole correlation effects. The detailed level structure of Th223 has been investigated in measurements of γ radiation following the fusion-evaporation channel of the Pb208(O18,3n)Th223 reaction at 85 MeV beam energy. The level structure has been extended up to spin 49/2, and 33 new γ rays have been added using triple-γ coincidence data. The spins and parities of the newly observed states have been confirmed by angular distribution ratios. In addition to the two known yrast bands based on a K=5/2 configuration, a non-yrast band has been established up to spin 35/2. We interpret this new structure as based on the same configuration as the yrast band in Th221 having dominant K=1/2 contribution. At the highest spin a backbending occurs around a rotational frequency of ℏω=0.23 MeV, very close to the one predicted in Th222, where a sharp transition to a reflection-symmetric shape is expected.

Abstract

We study the anisotropy effects measured with INDRA at GSI in central collisions of Xe+Sn at 50 A.MeV and Au+Au at 60, 80, 100 A.MeV incident energy. The microcanonical multifragmentation model with non-spherical sources is used to simulate an incomplete shape relaxation of the multifragmenting system. This model is employed to interpret observed anisotropic distributions in the fragment size and mean kinetic energy. The data can be well reproduced if an expanding prolate source aligned along the beam direction is assumed. An either non-Hubblean or non-isotropic radial expansion is required to describe the fragment kinetic energies and their anisotropy. The qualitative similarity of the results for the studied reactions suggests that the concept of a longitudinally elongated freeze-out configuration is generally applicable for central collisions of heavy systems. Abstract

High-spin states in $^{139}\mathrm{Ce}$ have been populated using the $^{130}\mathrm{Te}(^{14}\mathrm{C},5n)$ reaction. The level scheme has been extended to higher spins, including a new band of dipole transitions. The parity of several states has been changed from negative to positive, mainly based on the comparison with the level structure of the core nucleus $^{140}\mathrm{Ce}$ and the results of a realistic shell-model calculation. The dipole band is interpreted as a magnetic rotation band with $\ensuremath{\pi}{h}_{11/2}^{2}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\nu}{h}_{11/2}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ configuration built on small deformation axial shape with $({\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{2}=0.12,\ensuremath{\gamma}={0}^{\ensuremath{\circ}})$.

International audience; The nuclear reaction (40)Ca+(12)C at 25 MeV per nucleon incident energy was used to produce excited alpha-conjugate fragments from projectile fragmentation mechanism. From a careful selection provided by a complete detection and from comparisons with models of sequential and simultaneous decays, evidence in favor of α-particle clustering from excited light alpha-conjugate nuclei is reported.

Matière Nucléaire NIM; Semiperipheral collisions in the $^{124}$Sn+${64}Ni reaction at 35 MeV/nucleon were studied using the forward part of the Charged Heavy Ion Mass and Energy Resolving Array. Nearly completely determined ternary events involving projectilelike fragments (PLF), targetlike fragments (TLF), and intermediate mass fragments (IMF) were selected. A new method of studying the reaction mechanism, focusing on the analysis of the correlations between relative velocities in the IMF+PLF and IMF+TLF subsystems, is proposed. The relative velocity correlations provide information on the time sequence and time scale of the neck fragmentation processes leading to production of IMFs. It is shown that the majority of light IMFs are produced within 40–80 fm/c after the system starts to reseparate. Heavy IMFs are formed at times of about 120 fm/c or later and can be viewed as resulting from two-step (sequential) neck rupture processes.

Abstract

We analyzed the $^{93}Nb$ on $^{nat}Mg$ reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to the energy threshold, i.e. $\simeq 3$ MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to the experimental ones. Abstract

Isotopic ratios for light fragments (Z≤4) emitted by the quasiprojectile (QP) and the mid-rapidity (MR) sources are investigated by the use of a slightly asymmetric system (Ar36+Ni58) and a symmetric one (Ni58+Ni58) for six energies between 32A and 84A MeV and three semiperipheral centrality range selections. Experimental data come from the INDRA 4π multidetector. The results show a clear neutron-rich isotope production from the MR region as compared to the QP source. The beam energy and the centrality also show interesting different trends depending on the charge of the fragments and the emission source. Experimental results are compared to antisymmetrized molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract

In 129 Xe+ nat Sn central collisions from 8 to 25 MeV/A, the three-fragment exit channel occurs with a significant cross section. We show that these fragments arise from two successive binary splittings of a heavy composite system. The sequence of fragment production is determined. Strong Coulomb proximity effects are observed in the three-fragment final state. A comparison with Coulomb trajec-tory calculations shows that the time scale between the consecutive break-ups decreases with increasing bombarding energy, becoming quasi-simultaneous above excitation energy E * = 4.0$\pm$0.5 MeV/A. This transition from sequential to simultaneous break-up was interpreted as the signature of the onset of multifragmentation for the three-fragment exit channel in this system., Comment: 12 pages; 13 Figures; 4 Table; Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract

Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasi-fused nuclei produced in central $^{129}$Xe + $^{nat}$Sn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties in the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV [Nucl. Phys. A809 (2008) 111]. From these properties and the temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations, constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonic behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Abstract

High-spin states in the odd-odd nucleus La136, which is located close to the β-stability line, have been investigated in the radioactive-beam-induced fusion-evaporation reaction Sn124(N17,5n). The use of the radioactive beam enabled a highly sensitive and successful search for a new isomer [14+,T1/2=187(27) ns] in La136. In the A=130–140 mass region, no such long-lived isomer has been observed at high spin in odd-odd nuclei. The La136 level scheme was revised, incorporating the 14+ isomer and six new levels. The results were compared with pair-truncated shell model (PTSM) calculations which successfully explain the level structure of the πh11/2⊗νh−111/2 bands in La132 and La134. The isomerism of the 14+ state was investigated also by a collective model, the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model, which explains various high-spin structures in the medium-heavy mass region. It is suggested that a new type of collective structure is induced in the PTSM model by the increase of the number of πg7/2 pairs, and/or in the CNS model by the configuration change associated with the shape change in La136.

Abstract

Kinetic energy spectra and fragment velocity correlations, simulated by means of stochastic mean-field calculations, are successfully confronted with experimental data for single multifragmenting sources prepared at the same excitation energy per nucleon in 32 AMeV 129Xe+natSn and 36 AMeV 155Gd+natU central collisions. Abstract

Simulations based on experimental data obtained from multifragmenting quasifused nuclei produced in central 129Xe + natSn collisions have been used to deduce event by event freeze-out properties on the thermal excitation energy range 4-12 AMeV. From these properties and temperatures deduced from proton transverse momentum fluctuations constrained caloric curves have been built. At constant average volumes caloric curves exhibit a monotonous behaviour whereas for constrained pressures a backbending is observed. Abstract

Distributions of the largest fragment charge, Zmax, in multifragmentation reactions around the Fermi energy can be decomposed into a sum of a Gaussian and a Gumbel distribution, whereas at much higher or lower energies one or the other distribution is asymptotically dominant. We demonstrate the same generic behavior for the largest cluster size in critical aggregation models for small systems, in or out of equilibrium, around the critical point. By analogy with the time-dependent irreversible aggregation model, we infer that Zmax distributions are characteristic of the multifragmentation time-scale, which is largely determined by the onset of radial expansion in this energy range., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters on 8/4/2013

Abstract

Isospin e ffects on multifragmentation properties were studied thanks to nuclear collisions between di fferent isotopes of xenon beams and tin targets. It is shown that, in central collisions leading to multifragmentation, the mean number of fragments and their mean kinetic energy increase with the neutron-richness of the total system. Comparisons with a stochastic transport model allow to attribute the multiplicity increase to the multifragmentation stage, before secondary decay. The total charge bound in fragments is proposed as an alternate variable to quantify preequilibrium emission and to investigate symmetry energy e ffects., Comment: 10 pages. 6 figures. Abstract

The new detector CHIMERA, in its final 4π configuration, has been installed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania in January 2003. Beams of different energies ranging from protons to Au ions were delivered by the Tandem and the Super Conducting Cyclotron for nuclear reaction studies, in agreement with the approval of the Scientific Advisory Committee of LNS. Recent experimental results confirm very low energy thresholds of the trigger (below 0.5 MeV/nucleon), ensured within a wide dynamical range. Good characteristics of identification of light charged particles and heavy fragments have been obtained by using three detection techniques: Δ E-E , Δ E -time of flight, and the Pulse-Shape discrimination method. We present results of recent analysis concerning the production of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) in semi-peripheral collisions. Our results combined with theoretical Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov simulations clearly demonstrate the presence of very fast processes of IMF production in the overlapping region of the target and projectile nuclei during re-separation, i.e. in the time scale comparable with the collision time. Evidence for slower, sequential-like production of IMF's is also shown.

Abstract

The nucleus-nucleus Lie`ge intranuclear-cascade+percolation+evaporation model has been applied to the 12 C+ 197 Au data measured by the INDRA-ALADIN collaboration at GSI. After the intranuclear cascade stage, the data are better reproduced when using the Statistical Multiframentation Model as afterburner. Further checks of the model are done on data from the EOS and KAOS collaborations.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Current pulses induced in a silicon detector by 10 different heavy ion species at known energies around 10 AMeV have been sampled in time at high frequency. Their individual average shapes are quite well reproduced by a fit procedure based on our recent charge carrier collection treatment which considers the progressive extraction of the electrons and holes from the high carrier density zone along the ionizing particle track. This region is assumed to present a supplementary dielectric polarization and consequently a disturbe delectric field.The influence of the nature of the heavy ion on the values of the three fit parameters is analyzed.

Abstract

An efficient method of energy scale calibration for the CsI(Tl) modules of the INDRA multidetector (rings 6–12) using elastic and inelastic 12C+1H scattering at E(12C)=30MeV per nucleon is presented. Background-free spectra for the binary channels are generated by requiring the coincident detection of the light and heavy ejectiles. The gain parameter of the calibration curve is obtained by fitting the proton total charge spectra to the spectra predicted with Monte-Carlo simulations using tabulated cross section data. The method has been applied in multifragmentation experiments with INDRA at GSI.

International audience; Ar+Ni reactions have been studied to fix some constraints on the isospin dependence of the level density. The coupling of INDRA and VAMOS apparatuses allows to obtain highly exclusive data . The preliminary results on the Ar+Ni fusion-evaporation cross sections suggest a dependence on the entrance channel mass asymmetry.

Abstract

Fragment partitions of fragmenting hot nuclei produced in central and semiperipheral collisions have been compared in the excitation energy region 4-10 MeV per nucleon where radial collective expansion takes place. It is shown that, for a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the amount of radial collective energy fixes the mean fragment multiplicity. It is also shown that, at a given total excitation energy per nucleon, the different properties of fragment partitions are completely determined by the reduced fragment multiplicity (fragment multiplicity normalized to the source size). Abstract

A quantitative comparison is made between the absolute cross sections associated with statistical and dynamical emission of heavy fragments in the 124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni collisions experimentally investigated at 35A MeV beam energy using the multidetector CHIMERA. The result shows that the dynamical process is about twice as probable in the neutron-rich 124Sn+64Ni system as in the 112Sn+58Ni neutron-poor one. This unexpected and significant difference indicates that the reaction mechanism is strongly dependent on the entrance-channel isospin (N/Z) content.

Abstract

Expérience GANIL; Nuclear stopping has been investigated in central nuclear collisions at intermediate energies by analyzing kinematically complete events recorded with the help of the 4π multidetector INDRA for a large variety of symmetric systems. It is found that the mean isotropy ratio defined as the ratio of transverse to parallel momenta (energies) reaches a minimum near the Fermi energy, saturates or slowly increases depending on the mass of the system as the beam energy increases, and then stays lower than unity, showing that significant stopping is not achieved even for the heavier systems. Close to and above the Fermi energy, experimental data show no effect of the isospin content of the interacting system. A comparison with transport model calculations reveals that the latter overestimates the stopping power at low energies.

Abstract

The detailed level structure of ${}_{}^{223}\mathrm{Th}$ has been investigated in measurements of γ radiations following the fusion-evaporation channel of the ${}_{}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}{(}_{}^{18}{\rm{O}},3n{)}_{}^{223}\mathrm{Th}$ reaction at 85 MeV beam energy. The present data are extracted from two different experiments performed with the EUROBALL IV and JUROGAM II γ-ray detector array, respectively. The level structure has been extended up to spin $49/2$ and 33 new γ-rays have been added using triple-γ coincidence data. The spins and parities of the newly observed states have been confirmed by angular distribution ratios. In addition to the two known yrast bands based on a $K=5/2$ configuration, a non-yrast band has been established up to spin $35/2$. This observation has brought to light a sharp backbending occuring at the highest spins promoting the ${}^{223}\mathrm{Th}$ as the heavier thorium isotope having an accident observed in its moment of inertia at high spin. We interpret this new structure as based on the same configuration as the yrast band in ${}_{}^{221}\mathrm{Th}$ having dominant $K=1/2$ contribution. At the highest spin a backbending occurs around a rotational frequency of ${\hslash }\omega =0.23\,\mathrm{MeV}$, very close to the one predicted in the ${}_{}^{222}\mathrm{Th}$ where a sharp transition to a reflection-symmetric shape is expected.

Abstract

International audience; One of the first fusion–evaporation experiments using radioactive ion beams was performed at GANIL in order to study proton-rich nuclei of the light rare-earth region. The low production cross-section of the exotic species of interest, in combination with the low intensity of the beam and its induced background, demanded the use of a highly efficient experimental setup. This consisted of the EXOGAM γ-ray spectrometer coupled for the first time with both the DIAMANT charged-particle array and the VAMOS recoil spectrometer. In this report the experimental challenges of such studies will be discussed and the experimental achievements of the in-beam spectroscopy of proton drip-line nuclei using EXOGAM will be presented.

Abstract

International audience; Recent important progress on the knowledge of multifragmentation and phase transition for hot nuclei, thanks to the high detection quality of the INDRA array, is reported. It concerns i) the radial collective energies involved in hot fragmenting nuclei/sources produced in central and semi-peripheral collisions and their influence on the observed fragment partitions, ii) a better knowledge of freeze-out properties obtained by means of a simulation based on all the available experimental information and iii) the quantitative study of the bimodal behaviour of the heaviest fragment distribution for fragmenting hot heavy quasi-projectiles which allows the extraction, for the first time, of an estimate of the latent heat of the phase transition.

Abstract

Isotopic ratios for light fragments ($Z\ensuremath{\le}4$) emitted by the quasiprojectile (QP) and the mid-rapidity (MR) sources are investigated by the use of a slightly asymmetric system ($^{36}\mathrm{Ar}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$) and a symmetric one ($^{58}\mathrm{Ni}+^{58}\mathrm{Ni}$) for six energies between 32A and 84A MeV and three semiperipheral centrality range selections. Experimental data come from the INDRA $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ multidetector. The results show a clear neutron-rich isotope production from the MR region as compared to the QP source. The beam energy and the centrality also show interesting different trends depending on the charge of the fragments and the emission source. Experimental results are compared to antisymmetrized molecular dynamics simulations.
