Muscle fatigue is an important field of study in sports medicine and occupational health. Several studies in the literature have proposed methods for predicting muscle fatigue in isometric con-tractions using three states of muscular fatigue: Non-Fatigue, Transition-to-Fatigue, and Fatigue. For this, several features in time, spectral and time-frequency domains have been used, with good performance results; however, when they are applied to dynamic contractions the performance decreases. In this paper, we propose an approach for analyzing muscle fatigue during dynamic contractions based on time and spectral domain features, Permutation Entropy (PE) and biomechanical features. We established a protocol for fatiguing the deltoid muscle and acquiring surface electromiography (sEMG) and biomechanical signals. Subsequently, we segmented the sEMG and biomechanical signals of every contraction. In order to label the contraction, we computed some features from biomechanical signals and evaluated their correlation with fatigue progression, and the most correlated variables were used to label the contraction using hierarchical clustering with Wardos linkage. Finally, we analyzed the discriminant capacity of sEMG features using ANOVA and ROC analysis. Our results show that the biomechanical features obtained from angle and angular velocity are related to fatigue progression, the analysis of sEMG signals shows that PE could distinguish Non-Fatigue, Transition-to-Fatigue and Fatigue more effectively than classical sEMG features of muscle fatigue such as Median Frequency.

Introducción: La valoración geriátrica integral incluye el examen del apartado nutricional debido a la alta prevalencia de desnutrición en este tipo de pacientes; especialmente en los pacientes con deterioro cognitivo asociado. Las escalas de cribado del estado nutricional presentan preguntas de autopercepción subjetiva de difícil respuesta en pacientes mayores con demencia. Objetivo: Estudiar la especificidad, el valor predictivo positivo y la sensibilidad de la escala MNA para la detección de malnutrición en pacientes diagnosticados de enfermedad de Alzheimer con deterioro cognitivo avanzado. Material y métodos: Se diseñó un estudio descriptivo poblacional con una muestra de 52 pacientes mayores de 70 años, institucionalizados, con enfermedad de Alzheimer grado moderado y severo. Se estudió la sensibilidad, especificidad y valor predictivo positivo de la escala MNA respecto a los parámetros de malnutrición del American Institute of Nutrition (AIN). Resultados: Los valores de sensibilidad, especificidad y valor predictivo positivo son 60%, 94,7% y 93,8% respectivamente. Existe una correlación significativa (p < 0,001) ente la puntuación obtenida en la escala MNA y la escala de riesgo de caídas Tinneti (r = 0,577), de función Barthel (r = 0,742), de valoración cognitiva MEC (r = 0,651) y los niveles de creatinina (r = 0,402). Más del 50% de la muestra presentó al menos un parámetro de malnutrición AIN alterado. Conclusiones: La escala MNA presenta una menor sensibilidad y especificidad en estos pacientes. Los registros de parasitación de hormigas por estos nematodos son relativamente escasos a escala global, con pocos datos referentes a la península ibérica. En este trabajo se cita por primera vez su presencia como parásito de la casta obrera de Lasius flavus y en obreras y pupas de Tetramorium grupo caespitum por primera vez en el género. Se comparan la morfología y biometría de los especímenes infestados con las de los sanos de las mismas especies.

Global warming boosted by climate change affects grape quality, with increasing total soluble solids (TSS) content and decreasing total acidity (TA). However, current wine preferences increasingly include moderate alcohol content, higher acidity and the preservation of primary aromas reminiscent of grapes. Therefore, we hypothesised that applying phytohormones or mineral nutrients to leaves or carrying out defoliation can improve grape must properties in the face of climate warming and in accordance with current oenological trends. The effects of these three viticultural strategies were assessed independently from one another during three growing seasons in a Vitis vinifera L. cv. Tempranillo vineyard in northern Spain. Specifically, three 1-naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA) treatments, two early defoliations (ED; moderate and severe) and two foliar fertilisations with magnesium (Mg) were applied. Treatment with NAA was the most encouraging strategy for decreasing must TSS while increasing TA: it had slight effects on TSS in general and also slight effects on TA when applied close to veraison. The effects of the Mg treatments and moderate ED had null to slightly adverse effects. Finally, severe ED was clearly counter-productive. This study contributes to understanding the effects of both auxin and early defoliation treatments on grape must TSS, acidity and even yeast assimilable nitrogen (YAN) at harvest time. The favourable effects of NAA application are shown to be consistent though slight. Therefore, according to these results, the application of auxins may be an adequate choice for balancing sugars with acidity in grape musts. However, the results also suggest that more research needs to be undertaken to better characterise the effects of auxin treatments on grape must properties at harvest. In particular, different types of auxins, rates, concentrations and number of applications should be tested in the quest for more marked effects.

This study aims to find out how adolescents' consumption of toxic substances such as tobacco and alcohol is influenced by the Positive Mental Health. A quantitative methodology with a cross-sectional design has been used to achieve the final conclusions. The intervention was carried out by applying the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire developed by Teresa Lluch to a group of adolescents from Don Juan Manuel High School in Guadalajara (Spain). Our results shows that the Positive Mental Health of adolescents have a great impact on the tobacco and alcohol consumption. Introduction: Though the evidence of the role of the arts in mental health is growing, no systematic review has focused on the impact of art groups in non-clinical settings in the process of recovery following the CHIME framework., Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of engaging in community-based art groups in mental health recovery., Method: A search in five electronic databases for relevant research using quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods published between 2000 and 2019 identified nine eligible studies., Results: While there was great methodological heterogeneity, most studies were qualitative, used visual arts, facilitated by artists and assessed by mental health nurses, and took place in community locations or artistic venues. Quantitative outcomes, though few, provided evidence of increased well-being, and qualitative outcomes corresponded mostly with the recovery process of Connectedness. Additional outcomes related to the settings were a sense of safety and to the intervention: self-expression, development of skills and achievements, and the impact of final exhibitions and peer leadership., Discussion: Studies should aim at prospective designs following mixed methods approaches, with larger and gender-sensitive samples, control groups and follow-up assessments, and evaluate cost-effectiveness., Implications for Practice: Community-based art groups which increase well-being and promote connectedness should be key in recovery-action planning., (© 2023 The Authors. Slope Entropy (SlpEn) is a novel method recently proposed in the field of time series entropy estimation. In addition to the well-known embedded dimension parameter, m , used in other methods, it applies two additional thresholds, denoted as δ and γ, to derive a symbolic representation of a data subsequence. The original paper introducing SlpEn provided some guidelines for recommended specific values of these two parameters, which have been successfully followed in subsequent studies. However, a deeper understanding of the role of these thresholds is necessary to explore the potential for further SlpEn optimisations. Some works have already addressed the role of δ, but in this paper, we extend this investigation to include the role of γ and explore the impact of using an asymmetric scheme to select threshold values. We conduct a comparative analysis between the standard SlpEn method as initially proposed and an optimised version obtained through a grid search to maximise signal classification performance based on SlpEn. The results confirm that the optimised version achieves higher time series classification accuracy, albeit at the cost of significantly increased computational complexity.

Objective: To translate, adapt and validate the psychometric properties of MoVac-flu scale in order to be used in Spanish., Method: The present research was an analytical observational study of cross-cultural adaptation and validation into Spanish of the MoVac-flu scale. It has been carried out between the months of March and July 2022. The sample size was 142 people who were obtained by consecutive sampling. The processes used for the adaptation have been translation, validation by a committee of experts, back-translation and pilot test. For validation, the psychometric properties of reliability, internal consistency, appearance validity, content validity, utility and ceiling-floor effect have been verified., Results: The internal consistency of the MoVac-flu scale in its version translated into Spanish was high, showing a McDonald's ω of 0.914., Conclusions: The MoVac-flu scale in Spanish allows to measure the degree of motivation towards vaccination against influenza in the adult population., (Copyright © 2023 SESPAS. Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) dermoscopy is key to lower the biopsy threshold of suspicious lesions. There is a scarcity of published data on the dermoscopy of very small BCC (≤3mm) and its differences from larger BCCs., Objective: To describe and compare dermoscopic features of BCCs measuring ≤3mm, with those from 3 to 10mm., Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study, included biopsy-proven BCCs that had dermoscopic photographic images, between January 2017 and December 2022 in a Skin Cancer Center in Medellín, Colombia. Demographic, clinic-pathological and dermoscopic features were compared between very small BCCs (vsBCCs) and a reference group., Results: A total of 326 BCCs in 196 patients were included, of whom 60% were male. The most common Fitzpatrick phototype was III. vsBCCs accounted for 25% of the lesions (81/326). Face and neck were the most frequent locations (53%), especially in very small tumors. The nodular type was more common in very small tumors than in larger lesions, the superficial type was less frequent, and aggressive types were equally prevalent in both groups. On dermoscopy, very small tumors were statistically more likely to present pigmented structures than reference lesions, especially blue-gray dots (67% vs. 54%), vessels were less frequent, particularly short-fine telangiectasias (SFT) (52% vs. 66%), as were other structures such as shiny white structures (SWS), ulceration, micro-erosions, and scales., Study Limitations: Latin-American sample, lacks information on dark phototypes CONCLUSIONS: Pigmented structures, especially blue-gray dots, were most common in vsBCCs when compared to larger lesions; SFT, SWS and other findings were less prevalent., (Copyright © 2023 Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia. Background and Aims : Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents 10% of all cancers worldwide with the highest incidence in developed countries; its incidence is also increasing in middle- and low-income countries. Population screening programs facilitate early diagnosis of the disease. When the diagnosis is carried out in advanced stages, approximately 80% of patients with liver metastases (LM) are considered unresectable at the time of diagnosis. In our study, variations in blood counts prior to CRC diagnosis were analyzed to assess whether they could be useful in identifying smaller, more manageable metastases at earlier stages for more effective treatment. Methods : A study was carried out using complete blood counts (CBCs) from CRC patients, obtained from primary health centers and the La Ribera University Hospital within La Ribera Health Department, Valencian Community, Spain, between July 2012 and September 2020. Data from CRC patients who presented synchronous liver metastasis (CRLM) were compared with those with CRC without LM at diagnosis (CRC patients). Results : Our analysis shows that at least 15 months before CRC diagnosis, a progressive alteration was observed in CBC parameters in both groups. A higher incidence of anemia ( p < 0.001) was observed among CRLM patients in the three months prior to CRC diagnosis than in CRC patients showing no LM. Conclusions : A statistically significant deterioration of CBC was observed in patients with advanced-stage CRC and synchronous or early LM (CRLM) in the three months prior to diagnosis. The primary goal of incorporating CBC variations into predictive models is to identify individuals who are at a greater risk of developing metastatic colon cancer, leading to early diagnosis. Our research improves these models by highlighting a more pronounced and rapid decline in hemoglobin levels among CRLM patients. Identification of metastases at an earlier stage when they are smaller, more manageable, and more amenable to treatment may be a valuable tool to prevent their further progression.

The World Health Organization encourages mental health services to adopt a strategic intersectoral approach by acknowledging the potential of the arts and the value of culture on the process of mental health recovery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of participatory arts in museums on mental health recovery. A quasi-experimental, pre-post and multicentre study was carried out. By using a mixed methods evaluation at baseline and at 3 months, quantitative outcome measures were used to assess the changes in recovery and social support and qualitative interviews to explore the self-perceived impact on five processes of recovery. One hundred mental health service users participated for 3 years in the face-to-face programme RecuperArte, of which the data of 54 were analysed. The results indicate a significant increase in recovery measured with the QPR-15-SP (42 vs. 44; p = 0.034) and almost significant in functional social support measured with the DUKE-UNC (41.50 vs. 43.50; p = 0.052), with almost large (r = 0.29) and medium (r = 0.26) effect sizes, respectively. Participants perceived mostly an impact on the recovery process of Meaning in life 30/54 (55.56%), Hope and optimism about the future 29/54 (53.7%) and Connectedness 21/54 (38.89%), followed by Identity 6/54 (11.11%) and Empowerment 5/54 (9.26%). The findings contribute to the growing evidence of the potential of the arts as a therapeutic tool, the value of museums as therapeutic spaces and the role of nurses in intersectoral coordination, between the mental health and cultural sectors, as facilitators and researchers of these evidence-based practices., (© 2023 The Authors. Introduction: Reliable and valid instruments are needed to measure the impact of mental health services and programs on the journeys of recovery of service users. The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric properties of the cross-culturally adapted 15-item Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery in Spain (QPR-15-SP)., Methods: One hundred and ten participants from three locations in Spain (Málaga, Barcelona and Madrid), who were users of primary and specialized mental health services, were interviewed from October 2021 to June 2022., Results: The internal consistency obtained was excellent: ω   =.93 and α  =.92. Temporal reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients was moderate (ICC=.684, p  <.000). Regarding convergent validity, the QPR-15-SP had a moderate correlation with the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure (CORE-OM) ( ρ  =-.500, p  <.000), a Visual Numeric Recovery Scale (VNRS) ( ρ  =.591, p  <.000), and the Stages of Recovery Instrument (STORI) ( r  =.566, p  <.000). Correlations between advanced stages of recovery and higher QPR-15-SP scores were found (Moratorium: ρ   =-.579, p  <.000; Awareness: ρ  =-.130, p  =.189; Preparation: r  =-.043, P=.665; Rebuilding: r  =.460, p  <.000; Growth: ρ   =.697, p  <.000). In terms of divergent validity, the QPR-15-SP had low correlation with the DUKE-UNC Functional Social Support Scale ( ρ  =.273, p  <.005). The main aim of this study is to explore problematic technology use among adolescents (Internet, video games, mobiles, and television) and its association with anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, we also analysed the possible moderating role of life satisfaction in this relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. A cross-sectional survey of 4025 children and adolescents (52% females and 48% males) between 12 and 18 years old was carried out to explore problematic technology use and its correlation with anxiety and life satisfaction after pandemic lockdown. Four multivariate regressions containing the independent variable (problematic technology use), the moderator (life satisfaction), and their interaction were entered to predict the outcome (anxiety). The moderated models were examined using SPSS PROCESS macro software (Model 1). Analyses showed significant positive correlations with anxiety and negative correlations with life satisfaction regarding problematic technology use (mobile phone, television, and internet). Both gender and age had a significant direct effect on anxiety (showing that women and older participants had the greatest anxiety). In the moderation analysis, when life satisfaction was higher, the presence of anxiety symptoms depended to a greater extent on the problematic use of technology. Our results confirm that problematic technology use is related to higher levels of anxiety in adolescents, with differences by age and gender. The results also showed that life satisfaction mediated the relationship between technology abuse and anxiety, such that when life satisfaction was higher, the presence of anxiety symptoms was more dependent on problematic technology use. Familial longevity confers advantages in terms of health, functionality, and longevity. We sought to assess potential differences in frailty and sarcopenia in older adults according to a parental history of extraordinary longevity. A total of 176 community-dwelling subjects aged 65-80 years were recruited in this observational case-control study, pair-matched 1:1 for gender, age, and place of birth and residence: 88 centenarians' offspring (case group) and 88 non-centenarians' offspring (control group). The main variables were frailty and sarcopenia based on Fried's phenotype and the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) definitions, respectively. Sociodemographics, comorbidities, clinical and functional variables, the presence of geriatric syndromes, and laboratory parameters were also collected. Related sample tests were applied, and conditional logistic regression was performed. Cases had a higher percentage of robust patients (31.8% vs. 15.9%), lower percentages of frailty (9.1% vs. 21.6%) and pre-frailty (59.1% vs. 62.5%) ( p = 0.001), and lower levels of IL-6 ( p = 0.044) than controls. The robust adjusted OR for cases was 3.00 (95% CI = 1.06-8.47, p = 0.038). No significant differences in muscle mass were found. Familial longevity was also associated with less obesity, insomnia, pain, and polypharmacy and a higher education level and total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The results suggest an inherited genetic component in the frailty phenotype, while the sarcopenia association with familial longevity remains challenging.

Slope Entropy (SlpEn) is a very recently proposed entropy calculation method. It is based on the differences between consecutive values in a time series and two new input thresholds to assign a symbol to each resulting difference interval. As the histogram normalisation value, SlpEn uses the actual number of unique patterns found instead of the theoretically expected value. This maximises the information captured by the method but, as a consequence, SlpEn results do not usually fall within the classical [0,1] interval. Although this interval is not necessary at all for time series classification purposes, it is a convenient and common reference framework when entropy analyses take place. This paper describes a method to keep SlpEn results within this interval, and improves the interpretability and comparability of this measure in a similar way as for other methods. It is based on a max-min normalisation scheme, described in two steps. First, an analytic normalisation is proposed using known but very conservative bounds. Afterwards, these bounds are refined using heuristics about the behaviour of the number of patterns found in deterministic and random time series. The results confirm the suitability of the approach proposed, using a mixture of the two methods.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether the inclusion of older patients undergoing elective colorectal cancer resection in the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS ® ) programme could improve clinical outcomes during hospital admission., Methods: A before-and-after study in ≥70-year-old patients electively admitted for colorectal cancer resection was designed. In total, 213 patients were included in the ERAS ® group, and 158 were included in the control group., Results: The average age was 77.9 years old (SD 5.31) and 57.14% of them were men, with a Charlson Index score of 3.42 (SD 3.32). The ERAS ® group presented a lower transfusion rate of 42 (19.7%), compared to 75 (47.5%) in the control group ( p < 0.001). The crude odds ratio (OR) for transfusion was 0.27 (95% CI 0.17-0.43; p < 0.001), and the adjusted odds ratio was 0.26 (95% CI 0.14-0.48; p < 0.001). The ERAS ® group had a lower percentage of patients with moderate-severe malnutrition on admission, at 23.4% (37 patients) against 36.2% in the control group (42 patients) ( p = 0.023), with an OR of 0.47 (95% CI 0.29-0.75; p < 0.002) and an adjusted OR of 0.48 (95% CI 0.29-0.78; p = 0.003). The number of patients who required admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) was also markedly lower: 54 from the ERAS ® group (25.4%) versus 71 from the control group (44.9%) ( p < 0.001)., Conclusions: The inclusion of ≥70-year-old adults in the ERAS ® programme resulted in a decrease in transfusions, number of erythrocyte concentrates transfused, and number of ICU admissions, along with improved nutritional status.

Many time series entropy calculation methods have been proposed in the last few years. They are mainly used as numerical features for signal classification in any scientific field where data series are involved. We recently proposed a new method, Slope Entropy (SlpEn), based on the relative frequency of differences between consecutive samples of a time series, thresholded using two input parameters, γ and δ. In principle, δ was proposed to account for differences in the vicinity of the 0 region (namely, ties) and, therefore, was usually set at small values such as 0.001. However, there is no study that really quantifies the role of this parameter using this default or other configurations, despite the good SlpEn results so far. The present paper addresses this issue, removing δ from the SlpEn calculation to assess its real influence on classification performance, or optimising its value by means of a grid search in order to find out if other values beyond the 0.001 value provide significant time series classification accuracy gains. Although the inclusion of this parameter does improve classification accuracy according to experimental results, gains of 5% at most probably do not support the additional effort required. Therefore, SlpEn simplification could be seen as a real alternative.

Patterns of exposure and policies aiming at reducing physical contact might have changed the social distribution of COVID-19 incidence over the course of the pandemic. Thus, we studied the temporal trends in the association between area-level deprivation and COVID-19 incidence rate by Basic Health Zone (minimum administration division for health service provision) in Madrid, Spain, from March 2020 to September 2021. We found an overall association between deprivation and COVID-19 incidence. This association varied over time; areas with higher deprivation showed higher COVID-19 incidence rates from July to November 2020 and August-September 2021, while, by contrast, higher deprivation areas showed lower COVID-19 incidence rates in December 2020 and July 2021., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors. Mental health services need reliable and valid instruments to measure mental health recovery outcomes, and the only available one in Spanish is arduous. Adapting an instrument is more efficient than creating a new one as it enables international comparison research. The aim of this study was to conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the 15-item Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery. Fifty-four participants engaged in a five-stage systematic and standardized process carried out from November 2019 to November 2020. Professional translators (n = 4) from the Translation Service Center for Foreign Languages of the Universidad de Alcalá participated in the direct translation, synthesis and back translation stages, and mental health professionals (n = 33) and service users (n = 17) from the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga and the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria in Andalucía (Spain), with an average of 19.2 (SD 12.86) years of experience in mental health, participated in the committee of experts and pilot debriefing stages. Additionally, legibility was assessed. Out of the 15-items of the questionnaire, three (20%) were equal amongst translations, three items (20%) of the back translations matched the original questionnaire and discrepancies identified were adapted accordingly. Seven items (46.7%) were approved online by experts and consensus of alternative translations was reached for the rest. The average time spent completing the questionnaire by service users during the face-to-face pilot was 4.12 min (SD 2.25). Internal consistency obtained was ω = 0.95 and α = 0.91. Debriefing findings reported the questionnaire as comprehensible (97.1%), adequate in wording (91.2%), formal in language (55.9%) and adequate in terms of length (100%). The questionnaire scored 65.53, 'normal' readability, on the Inflesz scale. Body temperature is usually employed in clinical practice by strict binary thresholding, aiming to classify patients as having fever or not. In the last years, other approaches based on the continuous analysis of body temperature time series have emerged. These are not only based on absolute thresholds but also on patterns and temporal dynamics of these time series, thus providing promising tools for early diagnosis. The present study applies three time series entropy calculation methods (Slope Entropy, Approximate Entropy, and Sample Entropy) to body temperature records of patients with bacterial infections and other causes of fever in search of possible differences that could be exploited for automatic classification. In the comparative analysis, Slope Entropy proved to be a stable and robust method that could bring higher sensitivity to the realm of entropy tools applied in this context of clinical thermometry. This method was able to find statistically significant differences between the two classes analyzed in all experiments, with sensitivity and specificity above 70% in most cases.

As shown in the previous literature, in view of the future responsibilities of nursing professionals and the consequences for healthcare, it is of great interest to examine their risk perceptions, coping behaviors, and sense of coherency during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to design and to validate a specific questionnaire that evaluates the factors relating to perceived risk, coping behaviors, and preventive knowledge against COVID-19 infection among nursing students from Spain. This is a psychometric study of a questionnaire's design and its validation in 1562 nursing students at 16 undergraduate nursing institutions in Spain. An ad-hoc survey was designed by a panel of six experts drawing from the literature. After a trial test, the questionnaire was formed with four scales (perception, risk, coping, and knowledge of preventive practices for COVID-19), with a total of 69 items. The final questionnaire was composed of 52 items grouped into four scales, with good psychometric properties to measure risk perception (Cronbach's alpha 0.735), factors related to perceived risk (Cronbach's alpha 0.653), coping behaviors (Cronbach's alpha 0.80), and knowledge of preventive practices against COVID-19 (Cronbach's alpha 0.77). This questionnaire, specifically designed and validated for nursing students, is the first to address four important areas in the development of preventive measures against COVID-19.
