1. Evaluation of the properties of a foamed geopolymer developed with different types of metakaolin

Abstract

Abstract The physical and mechanical properties of foamed geopolymers were determined. The geopolymers were made with two different metakaolins (from Metacaulim do Brasil - MB, and Pantano Grande/RS - MPG) as precursors, with NaOH and Na2SiO3 as activators, and with the addition of foam, which was produced with the foaming agent diethanolamide of coconut fatty acid with a minimum of 80% concentration. Also, two times (2.5 and 4 h) were used for the calcination of MPG at 750 °C. The results showed that all factors (precursors type, alkali content, silica modulus, and foam content) had a significant influence on the response variables, which presented the following variations: compressive strength of 0.36 to 3.23 MPa; thermal conductivity from 0.22 to 0.42 W/(m.K); saturated bulk density from 1176 to 1364 kg/m3; dry bulk density of 619 to 864 kg/m3; air void from 46.4% to 62.5%; and water absorption from 55.7% to 95.4%. It was also concluded that the precursor type was the factor that had the most influence on the properties of foamed geopolymers, with MPG calcined for 4 h being the best, as greater compressive strength and low thermal conductivity were obtained.

Abstract

Plant extracts rich in phenolic compounds have been demonstrated to accelerate wound healing, but their use by oral route has been poorly studied. The leaves of Vitis labrusca are rich in phenolic acids and flavonoids. The goal of this study was to assess the healing properties of the oral administration of hydroalcoholic extract of V. labrusca leaves (HEVL) in a murine model. HEVL was obtained by Soxhlet and dynamic maceration, and their yield and phenolic acids and flavonoid contents were determined. For the wound healing assay, 8 mm wounds were performed on the back of 48 Wistar rats, assigned into four groups (n = 12): CTR (distilled water), HEVL100, HEVL200, and HEVL300 (HEVL at 100, 200, and 300 mg/kg, respectively). On days 7 and 14, wound closure rates were assessed, and the healing wounds were subjected to histological analysis. Soxhlet-obtained extract was selected for the wound healing assay because it provided a higher yield and phenolic acid and flavonoid contents. HEVL significantly reduced leukocytosis in the peripheral blood (p < 0.05), accelerated wound closure (p < 0.05), and improved collagenization (p < 0.05) on day 7, as well as enhanced the epidermal tissue thickness (p < 0.001) and elastic fiber deposition on day 14 (p < 0.01). Furthermore, HEVL promoted an increase in the histological grading of wound healing on both days 7 and 14 (p < 0.01). The doses of 200 and 300 mg/kg provided better results than 100 mg/Kg. Our data provide histological evidence that the oral administration of HEVL improves wound healing in rodents. Therefore, the extract can be a potential oral medicine for healing purposes.

Abstract

Magnesium is an attractive structural material due to its very low density. Among the magnesium alloys, the AZ series containing aluminum and zinc as main alloying elements presents good mechanical properties. However, the great challenge to be overcome by these materials is the poor corrosion resistance, consequence of their high surface reactivity with the formation of oxide/hydroxide films, which generally offer low protection. Therefore, to study the surface characteristics of these alloys is very important. In this paper, the surface of AZ31 magnesium alloy is characterized by ellipsometry after exposure to a 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution for 3 min, 5 min, 15 min, and 30 min. Through ellipsometric measurements and proper ellipsometric modeling, the thickness of the surface films grown for all cited immersion times could be known. The modeling acknowledges the three-layer surface film is formed for an inner layer composed initially of mixing of MgO and Al2O3. As the immersion time progresses until 5 min, the MgO is successively replaced by magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), thickening the intermediate layer of the film, which is composed of dense Mg(OH)2. On the other hand, the outer layer is composed of porous Mg(OH)2. The total thickness of the film grows in two stages: in the first 5 min, the film experiments a disruptive thickening until 339 nm; between 5 and 30 min, the total thickness evolves from 339 nm to 386 nm.

Abstract

Guanabara Bay is an estuarine environment of great socio-economic importance, where around 12 million people live in its drainage basin. We aim to characterize the sedimentary matter of Guanabara Bay, two mangrove systems therein (Surui and Piedade mangroves), and the rivers, Sao Joao do Meriti, Iguacu, Sarapui, Surui, and Guapimirim, by performing sedimentological, mineralogical, elemental/isotopic organic matter composition (total organic carbon and total nitrogen, 13C and 15 N) and organic matter petrography. Samples from the entrance of the bay present high values of quartz, low values of C/N ratio, and high percentages of diffuse amorphous organic matter indicating marine influence, whereas samples from rivers mouths present high percentages of translucent lignocellulosic, opaque lignocellulosic, gelified organic matter, and high C/N ratio probably due to the influence of terrestrial organic matter that comes from the drainage basin and the mangroves areas. Stations of the central sector of the bay were characterized by high percentages of TOC, intermediated values of δ13C, low C/N ratio, and also high diffuse amorphous organic matter indicating a predominant influence of organic matter from algae origin. High values of δ15N indicate large assimilation of nitrate or a high denitrification process in the highest productivity areas. In the river mouth regions, it is mainly influenced by terrestrial organic matter; however, in the northwestern and western sectors, organic matter is influenced both by terrestrial and domestic sewage influences which promote anaerobic decomposition of organic matter.

Abstract

In recent decades, microwave energy has been successfully experimented for mining and metallurgy processes and is considered a promising new method for ironmaking. In this context, in the present work, self-reducing mixtures composed of fines of iron ore and coke were prepared, intending to evaluate the degree of reduction of iron ore using microwave energy, applying different contents of coke, levels of power, and reaction times. For this, the degree of reduction was assessed as a function of these variables. Additionally, the reduction kinetics was investigated using chemical and diffusional models, and the microstructure of the samples was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest degree of reduction obtained after the experiments was greater than 60% and a statistical investigation showed that the reaction time is the factor with the greatest influence on these results, followed by microwave power and coke content. The investigation of the reaction kinetics showed that the process is chemically controlled, depending on the gasification steps governed by the Boudouard reaction. The images obtained by SEM led to the conclusion that the temperature inside the sample reached 1200°C. Pig iron was found both in the form of whiskers and in the form of metallic droplets.

An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. Abstract

International audience; Stream Processing Engines (SPEs) have to support high data ingestion to ensure the quality and efficiency for the end-user or a system administrator. The data flow processed by SPE fluctuates over time, and requires real-time or near real-time resource pool adjustments (network, memory, CPU and other). This scenario leads to the problem known as skewed data production caused by the non-uniform incoming flow at specific points on the environment, resulting in slow down of applications caused by network bottlenecks and inefficient load balance. This work proposes Aten as a solution to overcome unbalanced data flows processed by Big Data Stream applications in heterogeneous systems. Aten manages data aggregation and data streams within message queues, assuming different algorithms as strategies to partition data flow over all the available computational resources. The paper presents preliminary results indicating that is possible to maximize the throughput and also provide low latency levels for SPEs.

Abstract

Brycon amazonicus, a fish species widely distributed along freshwater rivers in Latin America, is important in maintaining ecological balance. Although some morphological/physiological aspects of B. amazonicus have been reported, the cardiac histomorphology of this species remains poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the heart, emphasizing coronary distribution and ventricular myoarchitecture, correlating its structure with its functional activity. Ten adult specimens were anesthetized and perfused with Trident® ink to highlight the coronary branching. Subsequently, the animals were euthanized to collect the hearts, which were collected and processed for histological and histochemical techniques and scanning electron microscopy. We observed that the heart of B. amazonicus has a pyramidal ventricle, mixed myocardium, and coronary vessels restricted to the compact layer, according to classifications in the literature. The compact layer comprises two types of muscle bundles, arranged in longitudinal and circular orientations. The coronary circulation, which originates in the lateral cephalic region, starts from the heart and extends to the ventricular myocardium. Therefore, B. amazonicus has a cardiac morphology similar to that of other teleost species already described in the literature, expanding information on the Characiformes group. The description obtained of the heart of this species may contribute to further studies that seek a better understanding of the ecophysiology and evolution of teleost fish in the freshwaters of the Neotropical region., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS. Abstract

Background: Treatment for fluoroquinolone-resistant multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (pre-XDR TB) often lasts longer than treatment for less resistant strains, yields worse efficacy results, and causes substantial toxicity. The newer anti-tuberculosis drugs, bedaquiline and delamanid, and repurposed drugs clofazimine and linezolid, show great promise for combination in shorter, less-toxic, and effective regimens. To date, there has been no randomized, internally and concurrently controlled trial of a shorter, all-oral regimen comprising these newer and repurposed drugs sufficiently powered to produce results for pre-XDR TB patients., Methods: endTB-Q is a phase III, multi-country, randomized, controlled, parallel, open-label clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of a treatment strategy for patients with pre-XDR TB. Study participants are randomized 2:1 to experimental or control arms, respectively. The experimental arm contains bedaquiline, linezolid, clofazimine, and delamanid. The control comprises the contemporaneous WHO standard of care for pre-XDR TB. Experimental arm duration is determined by a composite of smear microscopy and chest radiographic imaging at baseline and re-evaluated at 6 months using sputum culture results: participants with less extensive disease receive 6 months and participants with more extensive disease receive 9 months of treatment. Randomization is stratified by country and by participant extent-of-TB-disease phenotype defined according to screening/baseline characteristics. Study participation lasts up to 104 weeks post randomization. The primary objective is to assess whether the efficacy of experimental regimens at 73 weeks is non-inferior to that of the control. A sample size of 324 participants across 2 arms affords at least 80% power to show the non-inferiority, with a one-sided alpha of 0.025 and a non-inferiority margin of 12%, against the control in both modified intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations., Discussion: This internally controlled study of shortened treatment for pre-XDR TB will provide urgently needed data and evidence for clinical and policy decision-making around the treatment of pre-XDR TB with a four-drug, all-oral, shortened regimen., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.Gov NCT03896685. Abstract

Aim: The purpose of the study was to describe a novel three-dimensional dynamic anorectal ultrasonography technique (dynamic 3-DAUS) for assessment of perineal descent (PD) and establishment of normal range values, comparing it with defaecography. Secondarily, the study compares the ability of the two techniques to identify various pelvic floor dysfunctions., Method: A prospective study was undertaken in 29 women (mean age 43 years) with obstructed defecation disorder. All patients underwent defaecography and dynamic 3-DAUS and the results were compared. Lee kappa coefficients (K) were used., Results: On defaecography, PD > 3 cm was detected in 12 patients. On dynamic 3-DAUS, 10 of these patients had PD > 2.5 cm. Seventeen had normal PD on defaecography and PD ≤ 2.5 cm on dynamic 3-DAUS (K 0.85). Normal relaxation was observed in 10 patients and anismus in 14 with both techniques (K 0.65). Both techniques identified five patients without rectocele, two with grade I rectocele (K 0.89 and 1.00, respectively) and 10 with grade II and nine with grade III (K 0.72 and 0.77, respectively). Rectal intussusception was identified in six patients on defaecography. These were confirmed on dynamic 3-DAUS in addition to the identification of another seven cases indicating moderate agreement (K 0.46). Enterocele/sigmoidocele grade III was identified in one patient with both techniques, indicating substantial agreement (K 0.65)., Conclusion: Dynamic 3-DAUS was shown to be a reliable technique for the assessment of PD and pelvic floor dysfunctions, identifying all disorders and confirming findings from defaecography., (© 2011 The Authors. Abstract

Leukoplakia, a common lesion in the oral cavity, is considered a premalignant lesion that can develop into carcinoma. In 1986, a group of pathologists described a variant of epithelial dysplasia and named it "koilocytic dysplasia" (KD). This article presents a case of KD that was identified for 12 years as "carcinoma in situ". Even after removal of the lesion, it recurred with no signs of malignancy. The histopathological findings revealed all of the signs of KD (koilocytosis, acanthosis, multinucleated keratinocytes and atypical mitoses). Liquid-based cytology and hybrid capture were performed to confirm the diagnosis. Despite a professional recommendation to have the lesion removed surgically, the patient chose periodic clinical control. The mechanism of HPV transmission in the oral cavity still remains partially unknown. Additional studies on this subject are required to better understand the role of HPV in cell transformation in the oral cavity.

Abstract

Primary oral malignant melanoma (OMM) is a rare disease, representing 0.2% to 8% of all melanomas. Eighty percent of the cases are located on the palate and maxillary gingiva, with the remainder found on the mandibular gingiva, buccal mucosa, tongue, and floor of the mouth. OMM are highly aggressive with the tendency to metastasize and invade the surrounding tissues more readily than other oral malignancies. Prognosis is poor and the five-year survival rate ranges from 5% to 20%. The usual therapeutic approach for OMM is surgical excision of the primary tumor, supplemented by radiotherapy, with chemotherapy and immunotherapy serving as adjuvant. The authors report a well-documented case of OMM in a 40-year-old male who was referred to the Oral Medicine Service of the Cancer Hospital, Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil exhibiting a firm mass at the right side of the face. Palpation revealed a painless soft tissue arising in maxillary gingiva, extending to the palate and vestibular mucosa. Pigmented areas were found in the mass. The patient underestimated his symptoms and look for treatment after a substantial growth of the lesion. This is an example of how a delayed detection affects the prognosis of OMM. The patient was treated by radiotherapy since surgical intervention was not possible, but died seven months later.

Abstract

Background: Galectin-3 has been implicated in tumor progression of some malignancies as thyroid, prostate, and salivary gland tumors. Recently, it has been suggested that this protein may be an important mediator of the beta-catenin/Wnt pathway. Moreover, nuclear galectin-3 expression has been implicated in cell proliferation, promoting cyclin D1 activation. Thus, the present study aimed to correlate galectin-3 expression with beta-catenin and cyclin D1 expressions in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and in polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA)., Methods: Fifteen formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded cases of each tumor were retrieved from the files of the Surgical Oral Pathology Service at the University of São Paulo and the proteins were analyzed by immunohistochemistry., Results: Adenoid cystic carcinoma showed galectin-3 immunostaining mainly in the nuclei, while PLGA revealed a positive mostly cytoplasmic reaction to galectin-3 in the largest part of tumor cells. Both tumors showed intense cytoplasmic/nuclear staining for beta-catenin in majority of cases. Cyclin D1 immunoreactivity was not detected in 14/15 PLGA and showed specific nuclear staining in 10/15 cases of ACC in more than 5% of the neoplastic cells. Cyclin D1 expression was correlated with cytoplasmic and nuclear galectin-3 expression in ACC (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: These results suggest that in ACC galectin-3 may play a role in cellular proliferation through cyclin D1 activation. In addition, nuclear expression of galectin-3 in ACC may be related to a more aggressive behavior of this lesion. Although beta-catenin seems to play a role in carcinogenesis in both lesions, it seems that it does not bind to galectin-3 for cyclin D1 stimulation.

Abstract

Background: Oral leukoplakia (OL) is the main potentially malignant lesion of the oral cavity, and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for more than 95% of all malignant neoplasms in the oral cavity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the immunoexpression of p-Akt and Metallothionein (MT) proteins in dysplasic and neoplasic oral lesions., Methods: Immunohistochemical studies were carried out on 10 normal epithelium, 30 OL and 15 OSCC paraffin-embedded samples. Immunoperoxidase reaction for p-Akt and MT proteins was applied on the specimens, and the positivity of the reactions was calculated for 1000 epithelial cells., Results: Using the ANOVA and the Tukey's post hoc statistical analyses, it was observed a significant difference in the immunoexpression for p-Akt and MT when the OSCC samples were compared with normal and dysplasic epithelial groups. In addition, the Pearson's correlation test showed a significant correlation between the proteins' expression., Conclusion: Based on the data obtained, p-Akt and MT activation may play an important role in the conversion of a potentially malignant oral lesion to a malignant carcinoma since its earlier stages.

Abstract

A soluble flavoprotein that reoxidizes NADH and reduces molecular oxygen to water was purified from the facultative anaerobic human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae. The nucleotide sequence of nox, the gene which encodes it, has been determined and was characterized at the functional and physiological level. Several nox mutants were obtained by insertion, nonsense or missense mutation. In extracts from these strains, no NADH oxidase activity could be measured, suggesting that a single enzyme encoded by nox, having a C44 in its active site, was utilizing O2 to oxidize NADH in S. pneumoniae. The growth rate and yield of the NADH oxidase-deficient strains were not changed under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, but the efficiency of development of competence for genetic transformation during growth was markedly altered. Conditions that triggered competence induction did not affect the amount of Nox, as measured using Western blotting, indicating that nox does not belong to the competence-regulated genetic network. The decrease in competence efficiency due to the nox mutations was similar to that due to the absence of oxygen in the nox+ strain, suggesting that input of oxygen into the metabolism via NADH oxidase was important for controlling competence development throughout growth. This was not related to regulation of nox expression by O2. Interestingly, the virulence and persistence in mice of a blood isolate was attenuated by a nox insertion mutation. Global cellular responses of S. pneumoniae, such as competence for genetic exchange or virulence in a mammalian host, could thus be modulated by oxygen via the NADH oxidase activity of the bacteria, although the bacterial energetic metabolism is essentially anaerobic. The enzymatic activity of the NADH oxidase coded by nox was probably involved in transducing the external signal, corresponding to O2 availability, to the cell metabolism and physiology; thus, this enzyme may function as an oxygen sensor. This work establishes, for the first time, the role of O2 in the regulation of pneumococcal transformability and virulence.

Abstract

The crude aqueous extract of the fruits of Caesalpinia ferrea Mart. (Leguminosae) has been investigated for possible anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The carrageenan induced rat hind paw edema was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05) by oral administration of 300 mg/kg of this extract. A centrally mediated analgesic effect was not observed, however, there was a dose dependent reduction in the number of total writhes induced by acetic acid.

Abstract

The chemoprophylactic action of the essential oil of the fruit of Pterodon pubescens Benth (Leguminosae), incorporated in different soap formulations, was studied in experimental schistosomiasis. The formulations were used locally on the tails of mice which were exposed to Schistosoma mansoni cercariae immediately, 24, 72 or 168 hours later by the method of tail immersion. Protection was evaluated 45 days after exposure when the mice were sacrificed and the worms collected by perfusion. The results showed levels of protection varying from 0.0 to 100% depending on the formulation used. A methodology that allowed the evaluation of soap protection of mice exposed to natural infection in snail infested streams on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, MG, was also developed. Promising results were obtained in that protection of between 57.5 and 31.1% was observed in field trials when soap was applied to the animals 24 and 48 hours earlier. Preliminary studies evaluating irritation and toxicity were favorable and showed that this new prophylactic weapon could contribute to the control of schistosomiasis.

Abstract

Data concerning the molluscicidal activity of 159 extracts from 84 Brazilian plants on Biomphalaria glabrata, the most important intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil, are presented. Seventy eight extracts (49,0%) showed activity against snails or eggs, but only twenty nine (18.2%) were active on both, snails and eggs. Extracts of two species (Mikania hirsutissima and Qualea multiflora) have shown to be lethals to adult snails at 10 ppm concentration.
