Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women worldwide. The main limitations of conventional anti-cancer therapy, including breast cancer treatment, are side effects and the development of resistance to chemotherapeutics. Host defense peptides (HDPs) are bioactive compounds of innate immunity isolated from almost all living organisms, which exhibit wide range of biological activities. This review focuses on the anti-cancer effects of HDPs and their therapeutic potential against breast cancer. Numerous HDPs from different sources, including mammalian and amphibian origin, and their chemically modified analogues, exert the spectrum of anti-cancer activities. These effects include direct disruption of cancer cell membrane, induction of apoptosis, inhibition of angiogenesis and cancer cell proliferation, but also the modulation of anti-cancer immune response. Selected examples of HDPs of different origin and their anti-breast cancer capacities have been reviewed. Conclusively, due to their anti-cancer effects accompanied by substantial selectivity for cancer cells and low toxicity for normal cells, HDPs have been widely recognized as possible therapeutic agents.

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multimessenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). We pointed to 4-dimensional generalized Riemannian spaces important for applications in some parts of physics here. Complete metric tensors and its possibilities to be applied in cosmology are analyzed in this paper. We used the results of N. O. Vesic, presented in [14]. At the end of the paper, we studied the diagonal symmetric metric tensor in the cosmological context.

We study a model of tachyon inflation and its attractor solution in the framework of holographic cosmology. The model is based on a holographic braneworld scenario with a D3-brane located at the holographic boundary of an asymptotic ADS5 bulk. The tachyon field that drives inflation is represented by a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action on the brane. We examine the attractor trajectory in the phase space of the tachyon field for the case of inverse cosine hyperbolic tachyon potential.

In this paper we study a tachyon cosmological model based on dynamics of a 3-brane in the second Randall-Sundrum (RSII) model extended to include matter in the bulk. The presence of matter in the bulk changes warp factor which leads to modification of inflationary dynamics. The additional brane behaves effectively as a tachyon. The role tachyon fields may play in evolution of early universe is discussed in this paper. We consider the evolution of a flat and homogeneous universe governed by a tachyon scalar field with the DBI-type action and calculate the slow-roll parameters of inflation, scalar spectral index (n), and tensor-scalar ratio (r) for the given potentials. We pay special attention to the inverse power potential, first of all to V (x) ~ x−4, and compare the available results obtained by analytical and numerical methods with those obtained by observation. It is shown that the computed values of the observational parameters and the observed ones are in a good agreement for the high values of the constant X0. The possibility that influence of the radion field can extend a range of the acceptable values of the constant X0 to the string theory motivated sector of its values is briefly considered. A model of tachyon inflation is proposed in the framework of holographic cosmology. We present results obtained by a software we developed for computing observational cosmological inflation parameters: the scalar spectral index ($n_s$) and the tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) for a standard single field and tachyon inflation, as well as for a tachyon inflation in the second Randall-Sundrum model with an additional radion field. The calculated numerical values of observational parameters are compared with the latest results of observations obtained by the Planck Collaboration. The program is written in C/C++. We analyze a tachyon cosmological model based on the dynamics of a 3-brane in the bulk of the second Randall–Sundrum model. This model contains extended general warp functions, i.e. generalized bulk geometry. We study a power law warp factor in cosmological context. This type of warp factor generates an inverse power law tachyonic potential.

We analyze the inflationary scenario based on the tachyon field coupled with the radion of the second Randall-Sundrum model (RSII). The tachyon Lagrangian is derived from the dynamics of a 3-brane moving in the five dimensional bulk. The AdS$_5$ geometry of the bulk is extended to include the radion. Using the Hamiltonian formalism we find four nonlinear field equations supplemented by the modified Friedmann equations of the RSII braneworld cosmology. After a suitable rescaling we reduce the parameters of our model to only one free parameter related to the brane tension and the AdS$_5$ curvature. We solve the equations numerically assuming a reasonably wide range of initial conditions determined by physical considerations. Varying the free parameter and initial conditions we confront our results with the Planck 2015 data., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, typos corrected, results unchanged, published in Int. J. Mod. We discuss the slow-roll parameters of inflation, scalar spectral index n, and tensor-to-scalar ratio r for the model of tachyon inflation in the slow-roll regime. We compare the numerical results obtained for the models with the typical inflationary tachyon potentials.

The testing represented a prospective study that was performed at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic "Narodni Front" in Belgrade during a two-year period. The study encompassed female patients with ovarian endometrioma operated with laparoscopic surgery. The research objective was to determine the percentage of occurrence of relapses in patients operated for endometriosis of the ovary in relation to the stage of the disease and the type of performed operation, and which were receiving suppressive therapy with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues after the surgery compared to those who were not receiving suppressive therapy after the operation.The recurrence of endometriosis on the ovary of the test and control groups was monitored during the first year after surgery. In all patients ultrasound checks were done every month during the first six months after surgery, and then every three months for the next six months. In all patients in whom the recurrence, i.e. endometrioma on the ovary larger than three cm was revealed postoperatively by ultrasound, the laparoscopic removal of the endometrioma was performed again as well as the histopathological examination of the material.There was no statistically significant difference in the distribution of recurrence of endometriosis between the groups formed according to the type of surgical technique (cystectomy or cystotomy). The recurrence of endometriosis occurred later in the group of patients in which the treatment GnRH analogues was applied after the surgical treatment. The recurrence of endometriosis in more severe stages (Stage III and IV) occurs later in the group of patients in which the treatment GnRH analogues is applied after the surgical treatment.

Since its detection in Portugal in 1999, the pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer), a causal agent of Pine Wilt Disease, represents a threat to European forestry. Significant amount of money has been spent on its monitoring and eradication. This paper presents mathematical analysis of spread of pine wilt disease using a set of partial differential equations with space (longitude and latitude) and time as parameters of estimated spread of disease. This methodology can be used to evaluate risk of various assumed entry points of disease and make defense plans in advance. In case of an already existing outbreak, it can be used to draw optimal line of defense and plan removal of trees. Optimization constraints are economic loss of removal of susceptible trees as well as budgetary constraints of workforce cost.

We consider classical and quantum dynamics of a tachyonic system described by a DBI type Lagrangian and inverse cosh potential. This investigation is partially motivated by the string theory and D-brane dynamics, but mostly by their application in cosmological inflation. A formalism for describing dynamics of spatially homogenous tachyon scalar field with this kind of potentials is developed. Classical actions and corresponding quantum propagators in the Feynman path integral approach, both on real and nonarchimedean spaces, are calculated. Possibilities for a quantum adelic generalization of these models are noticed. Cosmological applications are pointed out and discussed.

We investigate the physical conditions and kinematics of broad absorption line region clouds of Si IV in 21 HiBAL Quasars. We use the Danezis et al. method [1], [2], [3] in order to fit and analyze the broad absorption troughs of Si IV resonance lines in the UV region of the electromagnetic spectrum. We find that the BAL flow is not smooth but instead plasma clouds are formed in it. BAL troughs present multicomponent structure which indicates the existence of more than one absorbing cloud in the line of sight, where every absorbing cloud produces a Si IV doublet. We show that the blending of these doublets produces the apparent broad absorption troughs we observe. One of our main achievements is that we managed to decompose and deblend each complex absorption trough to the individual doublets that it consists of. Apart from that, we succeeded in deblending the resonance lines of every doublet. By achieving accurate fits to the BAL troughs we calculated some physical and kinematical parameters that describe the plasma clouds in the line of sight. These parameters are: the radial outflow velocities of the clouds, the random velocities of ions inside each plasma cloud, the apparent optical depth in the center of every absorption component, the FWHM and the equivalent width. As a final step we correlate these physical parameters in order to draw useful conclusions.

We consider a class of tachyon-like potentials, motivated by string theory, D-brane dynamics and inflation theory in the context of classical and quantum mechanics. A formalism for describing dynamics of tachyon fields in spatially homogenous and one-dimensional - classical and quantum mechanical limit is proposed. A few models with concrete potentials are considered. Additionally, possibilities for p-adic and adelic generalization of these models are discussed. Classical actions and corresponding quantum propagators, in the Feynman path integral approach, are calculated in a form invariant on a change of the background number fields, i.e. on both archimedean and nonarchimedean spaces. Looking for a quantum origin of inflation, relevance of p-adic and adelic generalizations are briefly discussed.

This investigation was a prospective study performed at the Gynecological Clinic "Narodni Front" in Belgrade. In the investigated group, endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial polyp, and myoma were diagnosed as the most frequent causes of bleeding during perimenopause. The test group of patients was then subjected to hysterosonography in order to diagnose bleeding etiology, followed by hysteroscopy to confirm its etiology based on hysterosonography. Material was sent for histopathological analysis to definitely confirm the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to the compare the findings of hysterosonography and hysteroscopy to evaluate the sensitivity and efficacy of hysterosonography for diagnosing the etiology of uterine bleeding in perimenopausal women. In the diagnostics of submucosal myoma, endometrial hyperplasia, and endometrial polyps, hysterosonography has proven to be a good screening method. By its use for diagnosing intracavitary uterine pathology, and thus also the pathology of bleeding in perimenopausal women, in many cases hysteroscopy can be avoided. This is a method that is easy to perform, less invasive, less costly to perform, and is well-tolerated.

The aim of this study was to compare hemodynamic changes in the uterine and ovarian arteries between infertile women with moderate and/or severe endometriosis and healthy women. In this prospective study, 99 women in their generative age were subjected to color Doppler ultrasonography to measure hemodynamic parameters from July 2010 to January 2011. The examination was performed during the proliferative or ovulatory phase of the natural menstrual cycle in a random sample of 54 women treated for endometriosis-induced infertility and 45 healthy women were included in control examination procedure. Irrespective of considered stage, endometriosis was most often found in the ovaries, in the sacro-uterine ligaments, peritoneum, and rectovaginally. Resistance to blood flow expressed as the resistance index (RI) in the measured arteries, was significantly higher in severe endometriosis compared to moderate form. Average values of pulsation index (PI) and RI are significantly higher, in both endometriosis stages, compared to measured values in healthy women.

A review of non standard Lagrangians present in modern cosmological models will be considered. Well known example of non standard Lagrangian is Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type Lagrangian for tachyon field. Another type of non standard Lagrangian under consideration contains scalar field which describes open p-adic string tachyon and is called p-adic string theory Lagrangian. We will investigate homogenous cases of both DBI and p-adic fields and obtain Lagrangians of the standard type which have the same equations of motions as aforementioned non standard one.

We present a short review of our results in Quantum Cosmology, in particular on nonarchimedean spaces. As an illustration of our approach we present here our new results on the so‐called “Milne Universe”. The Milne model, we consider, is a special case of the Friedmann‐Lemaitre‐Robertson‐Walker (FLRW) model in the limit of zero mass density. Although its predictions of matter density and spatial curvature contradict observations, we discuss possibilities for a plausible role of this model within the framework of Quantum Cosmology. We present the standard and a new form of the “Milne Universe”, in particular in 2+1 dimensions, and bring these into connection with a few new proposals which have appeared in the last few years.

Preparedness planning for two large mass gatherings events were considered in Serbia in the context of pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009. Planning included approaches to prevention, detection and response in order to mitigate the situation at this early stage of the epidemic in Serbia. Cases of influenza A(H1N1)v were identified nationally immediately prior to the mass gatherings but also identified in association with both events, as expected in the context of the pandemic situation. This article describes the experiences of planning and the epidemiological situation during the period of the mass gathering events.

We discuss the relevance of the classical and quantum rolling tachyons inflation in the frame of the standard, p-adic and adelic minisuperspace quantum cosmology. The field theory of tachyon matter proposed by Sen in a zero-dimensional version suggested by Kar leads to a model of a particle moving in a constant external field with quadratic damping. ObjectivesRecent data have suggested that there is a flexibility of borderline values of lung function tests in allowing safe lung resection. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of postoperative lung function change in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease compared with that of patients with normal lung function, and to compare the operative morbidity and mortality between these groups.MethodsThe study included 35 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a control group of 47 patients with normal lung function who underwent lung resection for non–small cell lung cancer. The percent changes of lung function parameters after lung resection and operative morbidity and mortality were compared between groups.ResultsThe mean postoperative loss in forced expiratory volume in the 1st second was significantly less in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who underwent lobectomy compared with that of patients with normal lung function (11.88% vs 24.6%, P < .05); forced expiratory flows at low lung volumes (50% and 25%) improved in patients who underwent lobectomy. The lung function change after pneumonectomy followed the same trend as that after lobectomy. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, forced expiratory volume in the 1st second and small airways function significantly improved after preoperative bronchodilator therapy. In the group with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, operative mortality was 0 and operative morbidity was 51.43%.ConclusionsBecause the pattern of lung function change is different in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease compared with that of patients with normal lung function, surgery can be offered to carefully selected patients with lung cancer, even in the presence of severely limited lung function.
