Background Biomechanical analyses primarily focus on physical aspects of human movement; however, it is not understood how walking is affected while simultaneously performing a demanding cognitive task - a form of Cognitive-Motor Interference (CMI). CMI occurs when performance of a primary task (e.g. walking) is affected following the introduction of a cognitive task (e.g. visual search). Research question Would Visuo Motor Targeting Task (VMTT) impair visual search performance and reduce the margin of stability (MoS) at higher gait speeds? Methods A protocol was developed to investigate responses of the neuromuscular system while performing a complex visual search task. The Computer Assisted Rehabilitation ENvironment (CAREN, Motekforce Link, Netherlands) system was used for the experimental design. Twenty male participants (Age = 24.2 ± 2.5yrs, Weight = 70.3 ± 10.6 kg, Height = 178.0 ± 9.1 cm) located and pointed towards targets in complex scenes while walking at different gait speeds (0.55, 1.11 and 1.67 m/s.) or while stationary. The cost of visual search during a Visuo Motor Targeting Task (VMTT) was based on the pointing accuracy during the visual search task. Results A two-way repeated measure ANOVA showed that MoS in the ML direction significantly improved with increased gait speed and during the visual search task. There was also a significant interaction with MoS improvement being greater during the visual search task at high gait speeds. MoS in the AP was only affected by gait speed. Visual performance and cost of visual search were enhanced during walking versus standing up to 25 %. Significance This study investigated CMI at different gait speeds, which may have implications in postural control, falls and other neurological disorders.

Key Points KAT2A is required at different stages of human cord blood erythroid development with ATAC and SAGA complex specificity.KAT2A regulates leukemia cell maintenance and identity through specific participation in ATAC and SAGA complexes., Visual Abstract, Epigenetic histone modifiers are key regulators of cell fate decisions in normal and malignant hematopoiesis. Their enzymatic activities are of particular significance as putative therapeutic targets in leukemia. In contrast, less is known about the contextual role in which those enzymatic activities are exercised and specifically how different macromolecular complexes configure the same enzymatic activity with distinct molecular and cellular consequences. We focus on KAT2A, a lysine acetyltransferase responsible for histone H3 lysine 9 acetylation, which we recently identified as a dependence in acute myeloid leukemia stem cells and that participates in 2 distinct macromolecular complexes: Ada two-A-containing (ATAC) and Spt-Ada-Gcn5-Acetyltransferase (SAGA). Through analysis of human cord blood hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors, and of myeloid leukemia cells, we identify unique respective contributions of the ATAC complex to regulation of biosynthetic activity in undifferentiated self-renewing cells and of the SAGA complex to stabilization or correct progression of cell type–specific programs with putative preservation of cell identity. Cell type and stage-specific dependencies on ATAC and SAGA-regulated programs explain multilevel KAT2A requirements in leukemia and in erythroid lineage specification and development. Importantly, they set a paradigm against which lineage specification and identity can be explored across developmental stem cell systems.

Contrast-based early visual processing has largely been considered to involve autonomous processes that do not need the support of cognitive resources. However, as spatial attention is known to modulate early visual perceptual processing, we explored whether cognitive load could similarly impact contrast-based perception. We used a dual-task paradigm to assess the impact of a concurrent working memory task on the performance of three different early visual tasks. The results from Experiment 1 suggest that cognitive load can modulate early visual processing. No effects of cognitive load were seen in Experiments 2 or 3. Together, the findings provide evidence that under some circumstances cognitive load effects can penetrate the early stages of visual processing and that higher cognitive function and early perceptual processing may not be as independent as was once thought.

When dissimilar images are presented to each eye, the images will alternate every few seconds in a phenomenon known as binocular rivalry. Recent research has found evidence of a bias towards one image at the initial ‘onset’ period of rivalry that varies across the peripheral visual field. To determine the role that visual field location plays in and around the fovea at onset, trained observers were presented small orthogonal achromatic grating patches at various locations across the central 3° of visual space for 1-s and 60-s intervals. Results reveal stronger bias at onset than during continuous rivalry, and evidence of temporal hemifield dominance across observers, however, the nature of the hemifield effects differed between individuals and interacted with overall eye dominance. Despite using small grating patches, a high proportion of mixed percept was still reported, with more mixed percept at onset along the vertical midline, in general, and in increasing proportions with eccentricity in the lateral hemifields. Results show that even within the foveal range, onset rivalry bias varies across visual space, and differs in degree and sensitivity to biases in average dominance over continuous viewing.

Brain regions involved in saccadic eye movements partially overlap with a frontoparietal network implicated in encoding numerosities. Eye movement patterns may plausibly reflect strategic scanning behaviours to resolve the open-ended task of efficiently enumerating visual arrays. If so, these patterns may help explain individual differences in enumeration acuity in terms of well-understood visual attention mechanisms. Most enumeration eye-tracking paradigms, however, do not allow for direct manipulation of eye movement behaviours to test these claims. In the current study we terminated trials after a specified number of saccades to systematically probe the time course of enumeration strategies. Fifteen adults (11 naive, 4 informed) enumerated random dot arrays under three conditions: (1) a novel saccade-terminated design where arrays were visible until one, two or four saccades had occurred; (2) a duration-terminated design where arrays were shown for 250, 500 or 1000 ms; and (3) a response-terminated design where arrays were visible until a response. Participants gave more accurate responses when enumerating saccade-terminated trials despite taking a similar time as in the duration-terminated trials. When participants were informed how trials would terminate, their saccade onset latencies shifted to match task demands. Rotating saccade vectors to align with salient image locations accounted for variability in the orientation of saccade trajectories. These findings (1) show a combination of stimulus-derived visual processing and task-based strategic demands account for enumeration eye movements patterns, (2) validate a novel saccade-contingent trial termination procedure for studying sequences of enumeration eye movements, and (3) highlight the need to include analyses of spatial and temporal eye movement patterns into models of visual enumeration strategies.

Non-symbolic magnitude abilities are often claimed to support the acquisition of symbolic magnitude abilities, which, in turn, are claimed to support emerging math abilities. However, not all studies find links between non-symbolic and symbolic magnitude abilities, or between them and math ability. To investigate possible reasons for these different findings, recent research has analyzed differences in non-symbolic/symbolic magnitude abilities using latent class modeling and has identified four different magnitude ability profiles residing within the general magnitude ability distribution that were differentially related to cognitive and math abilities. These findings may help explain the different patterns of findings observed in previous research. To further investigate this possibility, we (1) attempted to replicate earlier findings, (2) determine whether magnitude ability profiles remained stable or changed over 1 year; and (3) assessed the degree to which stability/change in profiles were related to cognitive and math abilities. We used latent transition analysis to investigate stability/changes in non-symbolic and symbolic magnitude abilities of 109 5- to 6-year olds twice in 1 year. At Time 1 and 2, non-symbolic and symbolic magnitude abilities, number transcoding and single-digit addition abilities were assessed. Visuospatial working memory (VSWM), naming numbers, non-verbal IQ, basic RT was also assessed at Time 1. Analysis showed stability in one profile and changes in the three others over 1 year. VSWM and naming numbers predicted profile membership at Time 1 and 2, and profile membership predicted math abilities at both time points. The findings confirm the existence of four different non-symbolic-symbolic magnitude ability profiles; we suggest the changes over time in them potentially reflect deficit, delay, and normal math developmental pathways.

The degree to which the ability to mark the location of numbers on a number-to-position (NP) task reflects a mental number line (MNL) representation, or a representation that supports ordered lists more generally, is yet to be resolved. Some argue that findings from linear equation modeling, often used to characterize NP task judgments, support the MNL hypothesis. Others claim that NP task judgments reflect strategic processes; while others suggest the MNL proposition could be extended to include ordered list processing more generally. Insofar as the latter two claims are supported, it would suggest a more nuanced account of the MNL hypothesis is required. To investigate these claims, 84 participants completed a NP and an alphabet-to-position task in which they marked the position of numbers/letters on a horizontal line. Of interest was whether: (1) similar judgment deviations from linearity occurred for number/letter stimuli; (2) left-to-right or right-to-left lines similarly, affected number/letter judgments; and (3) response times (RTs) differed as a function of number/letter stimuli and/or reverse/standard lines. While RTs were slower marking letter stimuli compared to number stimuli, they did not differ in the standard compared to the reverse number/letter lines. Furthermore, similar patterns of non-linear RTs were found marking stimuli on the number/letter lines, suggesting that similar strategic processes were at play. These findings suggest that a general mental representation may underlie ordered list processing and that a linear mental representation is not a unique feature of number per se. This is consistent with the hypothesis that number is supported by a representation that lends itself to processing ordered sequences in general.

Early math abilities are claimed to be linked to magnitude representation ability. Some claim that nonsymbolic magnitude abilities scaffold the acquisition of symbolic (Arabic number) magnitude abilities and influence math ability. Others claim that symbolic magnitude abilities, and ipso facto math abilities, are independent of nonsymbolic abilities and instead depend on the ability to process number symbols (e.g., 2, 7). Currently, the issue of whether symbolic abilities are or are not related to nonsymbolic abilities, and the cognitive factors associated with nonsymbolic-symbolic relationships, remains unresolved. We suggest that different nonsymbolic-symbolic relationships reside within the general magnitude ability distribution and that different cognitive abilities are likely associated with these different relationships. We further suggest that the different nonsymbolic-symbolic relationships and cognitive abilities in combination differentially predict math abilities. To test these claims, we used latent profile analysis to identify nonsymbolic-symbolic judgment patterns of 124, 5- to 7-year-olds. We also assessed four cognitive factors (visuospatial working memory [VSWM], naming numbers, nonverbal IQ, and basic reaction time [RT]) and two math abilities (number transcoding and single-digit addition abilities). Four nonsymbolic-symbolic ability profiles were identified. Naming numbers, VSWM, and basic RT abilities were differentially associated with the different ability profiles and in combination differentially predicted math abilities. Findings show that different patterns of nonsymbolic-symbolic magnitude abilities can be identified and suggest that an adequate account of math development should specify the inter-relationship between cognitive factors and nonsymbolic-symbolic ability patterns.

Background Over the last 15-years, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a relatively novel form of neuromodulation, has seen a surge of popularity in both clinical and academic settings. Despite numerous claims suggesting that a single session of tDCS can modulate cognition in healthy adult populations (especially working memory and language production), the paradigms utilized and results reported in the literature are extremely variable. To address this, we conduct the largest quantitative review of the cognitive data to date. Methods Single-session tDCS data in healthy adults (18–50) from every cognitive outcome measure reported by at least two different research groups in the literature was collected. Outcome measures were divided into 4 broad categories: executive function, language, memory, and miscellaneous. To account for the paradigmatic variability in the literature, we undertook a three-tier analysis system; each with less-stringent inclusion criteria than the prior. Standard mean difference values with 95% CIs were generated for included studies and pooled for each analysis. Results Of the 59 analyses conducted, tDCS was found to not have a significant effect on any – regardless of inclusion laxity. This includes no effect on any working memory outcome or language production task. Conclusion Our quantitative review does not support the idea that tDCS generates a reliable effect on cognition in healthy adults. Reasons for and limitations of this finding are discussed. This work raises important questions regarding the efficacy of tDCS, state-dependency effects, and future directions for this tool in cognitive research.

The ability to navigate accurately through the environment and avoid obstacles is essential for effective interactions with the environment. It is therefore surprising that systematic rightward errors are observed when neurologically intact participants navigate through doorways-most likely due to the operation of biases in spatial attention. These rightward errors may arise due to the operation of an extinction-like process, whereby participants overattend to the left doorpost and collide with the right one. Alternatively, rightward biases might reflect a bisection bias, such that the extrapersonal nature of the aperture causes participants to misbisect the aperture slightly to the right of true center. Because eye movements and spatial attention are closely related, in this study we used eyetracking to test the extinction and bisection models in a remote wheelchair navigation task. University students (n = 16) made rightward errors when navigating the wheelchair through a doorway, and fixated more frequently toward the right side of the aperture throughout the trial. These results are inconsistent with an extinction-based theory of navigation asymmetry, which predicts a leftward bias in eye position due to participants overattending to the left side of the doorway. Instead, the observed rightward bias in eye movements strongly supports a bisection-based theory of navigation asymmetry, whereby participants mentally "mark" the midpoint of a doorway toward the right and then head toward that point, resulting in rightward deviations. The rightward nature of participants' navigation errors and eye positions is consistent with the existence of a rightward attentional bias for extrapersonal stimuli.

Three models are presented for the wetting of whole grains of cereal. Two are for temperatures below gelatinization temperatures, one of which incorporates the effects of swelling of the grain. A third model is presented for wetting of a grain at temperatures above gelatinization, and hence cooking the grain. The models are developed as partial differential equations, and solved in a variety of ways. A model that ignores swelling at temperatures below gelatinization is solved for wetting times by using the concept of mean action time, which reduces the problem to an exactly solvable linear Poisson equation. The other two models, which include swelling and cooking respectively, are solved approximately, taking advantage of the steep nonlinear diffusion fronts that develop. The aim of the modelling is to improve understanding of the cooking of whole-grain cereals prior to processing into breakfast cereals. Moisture penetration curves are obtained and compared. Regions where the penetration rate is approximately linear are noted, suggesting that nonlinear diffusion equations are a promising way to model grain wetting and cooking.

Attention can be captured by distractors and can affect performance. To examine whether asymmetrical distractors, such as a wall, affect spatial attention, Experiment 1 required participants (n = 20) to determine the relative length of pre-bisected lines when a temporary barrier was placed close to the left or right sides of the display. Post-hoc tests showed that attention was drawn towards left, but not right, walls. Experiment 2 (n = 18) sought to increase this effect using a solid brick wall rather than a temporary barrier. Instead of strengthening the result, no effect of barrier was observed. A non-effect was also observed in Experiment 3 (n = 18) when participants moved a cursor to the line's middle. Finally, Experiment 4 (n = 26) showed that asymmetrical barriers had no effect on visual search. While the data showed some evidence that attention is distracted by walls placed to the left, this effect is weak and task-specific.Practitioner Summary: The ability to monitor critical information on displays can be affected by asymmetrical distractors. In many workplaces, a display may be placed alongside a wall. This study explored whether a wall placed to the left/right affects spatial attention. Background Research exploring the behavioral impact of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over M1 has produced homogenous results. The most common explanations to address this homogeneity concerns the differential impact of varied tDCS parameters (such as stimulation intensity or electrode montage). To explore this, we systematically examined the effects of 15 different tDCS protocols on a well-elucidated neurobehavioral system: simple visual motor reaction time (smRT). Methods For the initial phase of this study, 150 healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of 5 experimental groups (2 mA anodal, 2 mA cathodal, 1 mA anodal, 1 mA cathodal, or sham) across 3 different conditions (orbitofrontal, bilateral, or extracephalic reference electrode location). The active electrode was always placed over M1 and tDCS lasted for 20 min. Starting ~5 min prior to stimulation and running continuously for ~30 min, participants were repeatedly presented with a visual cue centered on a computer monitor and asked to press a response button as quickly as possible at stimulus onset (stimuli number: 100 pre-, 400 during-, and 100-post stimulation - interstimulus interval: 1–3 s). Ex-gaussian distribution curves, miss, and error rates were determined for each normalized batch of 100 RTs and compared using a two-way ANOVA. As the largest group differences were seen with 2 mA anodal (compared to sham) stimulation using an orbitofrontal montage, an additional 60 healthy participants were recruited to further test for significance in this condition. Results No significant impact of tDCS was seen on any parameter of smRT distribution, error rate, or miss rate, regardless of polarity, stimulation intensity, electrode montage, or stimulation-to-task relationship. Conclusion Our results suggest that tDCS over M1 might not have a predictable or reliable effect on short duration smRT. Our results raise interesting questions regarding the mechanisms by which tDCS might modulate more complex motor behaviors. Additional research utilizing multiple tDCS protocols as undertaken here will help address and clarify these concerns.

The red-green axis of colour vision evolved recently in primate evolutionary history. Signals serving red-green colour vision travel together with signals serving spatial vision, in the parvocellular (PC) division of the subcortical visual pathway. However, the question of whether receptive fields of PC pathway cells are specialized to transmit red-green colour signals remains unresolved. We addressed this question in single-cell recordings from the lateral geniculate nucleus of anaesthetized marmosets. Marmosets show a high proportion of dichromatic (red-green colour-blind) individuals, allowing spatial and colour tuning properties of PC cells to be directly compared in dichromatic and trichromatic visual systems. We measured spatial frequency tuning for sine gratings that provided selective stimulation of individual photoreceptor types. We found that in trichromatic marmosets, the foveal visual field representation is dominated by red-green colour-selective PC cells. Colour selectivity of PC cells is reduced at greater eccentricities, but cone inputs to centre and surround are biased to create more selectivity than predicted by a purely 'random wiring' model. Thus, one-to-one connections in the fovea are sufficient, but not necessary, to create colour-selective responses. The distribution of spatial tuning properties for achromatic stimuli shows almost complete overlap between PC cells recorded in dichromatic and trichromatic marmosets. These data indicate that transmission of red-green colour signals has been enabled by centre-surround receptive fields of PC cells, and has not altered the capacity of PC cells to serve high-acuity vision at high stimulus contrast.

Human vision remains perceptually stable even though retinal inputs change rapidly with each eye movement. Although the neural basis of visual stability remains unknown, a recent psychophysical study pointed to the existence of visual feature-representations anchored in environmental rather than retinal coordinates (e.g. ‘spatiotopic’ receptive fields; Melcher, D., and Morrone, M.C. (2003). Spatiotopic temporal integration of visual motion across saccadic eye movements. Nat Neurosci 6, 877-881). In that study, sensitivity to a moving stimulus presented after a saccadic eye movement was enhanced when preceded by another moving stimulus at the same spatial location prior to the saccade. The finding is consistent with spatiotopic sensory integration, but it could also have arisen from a probabilistic improvement in performance due to the presence of more than one motion signal for the perceptual decision. Here we show that this statistical advantage accounts completely for summation effects in this task. We first demonstrate that measurements of summation are confounded by noise related to an observer's uncertainty about motion onset times. When this uncertainty is minimized, comparable summation is observed irrespective of whether two motion signals occupy the same or different locations in space, and whether they contain the same or opposite directions of motion. These results are incompatible with the tuning properties of motion-sensitive sensory neurons and provide no evidence for a spatiotopic representation of visual motion. Instead, summation in this context reflects a decision mechanism that uses abstract representations of sensory events to optimize choice behavior.

We characterised the dynamics in the oscillatory potentials (OPs) of the rat electroretinogram (ERG) using a continuous complex Morlet wavelet transform. Dark-adapted (>12h) full field ERG responses were recorded from five anaesthetized (ketamine:xylazine, 60:5mg/kg) adult Long-Evans rats (10-12weeks). Five responses were obtained for brief LED flashes (1-4ms) in a ganzfeld at exposures ranging from -4.2 to 1.58logcdsm(-2). Signals were recorded across a bandwidth of 0.3-1kHz and digitized at 10kHz. Morlet wavelets with frequencies between 50 and 250Hz were correlated with raw ERG signals at 1ms intervals. The amplitude of the correlation at each time and frequency was given by the modulus of the complex wavelet response. Candidate OPs were identified as local peaks within 10% of the maximum amplitude. As flash exposure increased, the amplitude of the OP response increased, the peak OP occurred earlier, and the peak OP frequency increased. OPs at brighter flashes clustered into two groups, peaking at 50ms in the 70 and 130Hz band for moderate intensities, and peaking at 20ms in the 70Hz band and 50ms in the 120Hz band for the highest intensities (>0logcdsm(-2)). These dynamics agree with physiological, pharmacological and clinical studies that suggest several distinct neural mechanisms contribute to OPs. Wavelet analysis reveals important dynamics in OP data that are not evident with traditional analytical approaches.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) uses a weak electric current to modulate neuronal activity. A neurophysiologic outcome measure to demonstrate reliable tDCS modulation at the group level is transcranial magnetic stimulation engendered motor evoked potentials (MEPs). Here, we conduct a study testing the reliability of individual MEP response patterns following a common tDCS protocol. Fourteen participants (7m/7f) each underwent nine randomized sessions of 1 mA, 10 min tDCS (3 anode; 3 cathode; 3 sham) delivered using an M1/orbito-frontal electrode montage (sessions separated by an average of ~5.5 days). Fifteen MEPs were obtained prior to, immediately following and in 5 min intervals for 30 min following tDCS. TMS was delivered at 130 % resting motor threshold using neuronavigation to ensure consistent coil localization. A number of non-experimental variables were collected during each session. At the individual level, considerable variability was seen among different testing sessions. No participant demonstrated an excitatory response ≥20 % to all three anodal sessions, and no participant demonstrated an inhibitory response ≥20 % to all three cathodal sessions. Intra-class correlation revealed poor anodal and cathodal test-retest reliability [anode: ICC(2,1) = 0.062; cathode: ICC(2,1) = 0.055] and moderate sham test-retest reliability [ICC(2,1) = 0.433]. Results also revealed no significant effect of tDCS at the group level. Using this common protocol, we found the effects of tDCS on MEP amplitudes to be highly variable at the individual level. In addition, no significant effects of tDCS on MEP amplitude were found at the group level. Future studies should consider utilizing a more strict experimental protocol to potentially account for intra-individual response variations.

This study concerns the properties of neurons carrying signals for colour vision in primates. We investigated the variability of responses of individual parvocellular lateral geniculate neurons of dichromatic and trichromatic marmosets to drifting sinusoidal luminance and chromatic gratings. Response variability was quantified by the cycle-to-cycle variation in Fourier components of the response. Averaged across the population, the variability at low contrasts was greater than predicted by a Poisson process, and at high contrasts the responses were approximately 40% more variable than responses at low contrasts. The contrast-dependent increase in variability was nevertheless below that expected from the increase in firing rate. Variability falls below the Poisson prediction at high contrast, and intrinsic variability of the spike train decreases as contrast increases. Thus, while deeply modulated responses in parvocellular cells have a larger absolute variability than weakly modulated ones, they have a more favourable signal: noise ratio than predicted by a Poisson process. Similar results were obtained from a small sample of magnocellular and koniocellular ('blue-on') neurons. The Soreq Propulsion Physics Division has recently initiated the development of a small-caliber pure electrothermal (ET) weapon. This paper reports the promising results obtained with a 25-mm ET gun. The currently mature gun technology based on conventional ballistic process is mostly limited because: 1) the propellant burning features dictate a curve that is entirely determined by the grain geometry and cannot be changed "online" and 2) the pressure gradient between the breech and the projectile's base strongly depends on the molecular weight of the combustion gases, which is almost propellant formulation independent. Removing the first limitation and reducing the second one is the key of the ET technology. ET guns use electric energy as the unique source of propelling energy. It is converted into a high-temperature plasma which interacts in the chamber with an inert cooling fluid that serves also as a propelling working fluid. In this study, two types of working fluids were tested: polyethylene and water. Polyethylene was found unsuitable for our purposes. Experiments, supported by simulations, show that the degree of water dissociation was enough to produce the required working fluid. Using 750 kJ of ET energy, 20% improvement in kinetic energy was obtained with a standard projectile without exceeding the maximum authorized breech pressure. It has been shown that the well-known barrel erosion issue is mostly due to the aggressive abrasion of the cartridge metal by the hot plasma jet. A new cartridge concept has been especially designed to overcome this problem. Results are very satisfactory

The main motivation of this work is to clarify whether the hopes of significantly improving the performance of the conventional guns by using plasma ignition have a realistic basis. We assessed the possibility of improving the whole interior ballistic process, its repeatability and safety, through a uniform propellant ignition. In addition, we planed to improve the gun performance [the projectile muzzle energy (velocity)] by "forcing" "cold" charges to perform as "hot" ones (achieving "temperature compensation"). All of these goals are intended to be accomplished by using reasonable electrical energies (which would allow the reduction of the mass and volume of the power supply). We also avoided any significant changes in the conventional gun topography in order to prevent unacceptable costs. The presented research program proved that by using a standard 105-mm gun (concerning its barrel length and charge chamber volume) and a standard propellant, improved performances (more than 28% in the projectile muzzle energy) can be achieved while dense charges are used. In addition, significant reduction of the important effect, the "temperature gradient," is obtained. The capacity of plasma as the ignition factor to provide ballistic gain has also been demonstrated

We assessed the prevalence and phenotypic characteristics of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producers among 365 clinical isolates of members of the family Enterobacteriaceae recovered from two hospitals in Bejaia, Algeria, between March 2004 and April 2005. Twenty-one strains were resistant to cefotaxime and/or ceftazidime. A double-disk synergy test yielded a positive result in five cases (three Escherichia coli , one Klebsiella pneumoniae and one Enterobacter cloacae ). Using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing, the three E. coli isolates and the K. pneumoniae isolate were found to produce extended-spectrum β-lactamase CTX-M-15 and the E. cloacae isolate produced CTX-M-3. The three CTX-M-15-producing E. coli isolates were not isolated in the same wards, although genotyping by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis revealed that they were clonally related. The bla CTX-M-15 genes were transferred from E. coli by conjugation, whilst conjugative transfer of bla CTX-M genes from K. pneumoniae and E. cloacae was not detectable.

Normal binocular vision can provide a view of an object partially occluded so that no part of it is seen by both eyes but all of it is seen by one or other eye. We used two-dimensional filtered noise textures to explore the conditions under which the visual system can piece together the monocular fragments of such occluded surfaces. When the fragments seen by left and right eyes are drawn from a continuous texture with strong horizontal correlation, observers see coherent surfaces reliably located in depth. When textures are discontinuous or have weaker horizontal correlation, or the left and right eyes' views represent unnatural depth relationships, no coherent surface is perceived, and binocular rivalry ensues. The discovery of coherent surfaces under our conditions seems to reflect the operation of a high-level integration process, failures of which drive rivalry.

We habitually move our eyes when we enumerate sets of objects. It remains unclear whether saccades are directed for numerosity processing as distinct from object-oriented visual processing (e.g., object saliency, scanning heuristics). Here we investigated the extent to which enumeration eye movements are contingent upon the location of objects in an array, and whether fixation patterns vary with enumeration demands. Twenty adults enumerated random dot arrays twice: first to report the set cardinality and second to judge the perceived number of subsets. We manipulated the spatial location of dots by presenting arrays at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° orientations. Participants required a similar time to enumerate the set or the perceived number of subsets in the same array. Fixation patterns were systematically shifted in the direction of array rotation, and distributed across similar locations when the same array was shown on multiple occasions. We modeled fixation patterns and dot saliency using a simple filtering model and show participants judged groups of dots in close proximity (2°-2.5° visual angle) as distinct subsets. Modeling results are consistent with the suggestion that enumeration involves visual grouping mechanisms based on object saliency, and specific enumeration demands affect spatial distribution of fixations. Our findings highlight the importance of set computation, rather than object processing per se, for models of numerosity processing.

Background Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a form of neuromodulation that is increasingly being utilized to examine and modify a number of cognitive and behavioral measures. The theoretical mechanisms by which tDCS generates these changes are predicated upon a rather large neurophysiological literature. However, a robust systematic review of this neurophysiological data has not yet been undertaken. Methods tDCS data in healthy adults (18–50) from every neurophysiological outcome measure reported by at least two different research groups in the literature was collected. When possible, data was pooled and quantitatively analyzed to assess significance. When pooling was not possible, data was qualitatively compared to assess reliability. Results Of the 30 neurophysiological outcome measures reported by at least two different research groups, tDCS was found to have a reliable effect on only one: MEP amplitude. Interestingly, the magnitude of this effect has been significantly decreasing over the last 14 years. Conclusion Our systematic review does not support the idea that tDCS has a reliable neurophysiological effect beyond MEP amplitude modulation – though important limitations of this review (and conclusion) are discussed. This work raises questions concerning the mechanistic foundations and general efficacy of this device – the implications of which extend to the steadily increasing tDCS psychological literature.

We investigated the spatial parameters that permit temporal phase segmentation. Subjects identified a stimulus quadrant which was modulated 180 degrees out of phase with the rest of the stimulus at temporal frequencies between 2 and 30 Hz. We determined the modulation sensitivity for regular square lattices of Gaussian spots and a stimulus made from solid quadrants with varying separation. Sensitivity declined rapidly when spatial separation of the modulating areas was approximately 0.4 degree, but was relatively unchanged by further spatial separations. The results suggest that there are two systems that can detect temporal phase differences. The first is a segregation process that operates below 10 Hz, where phase can be consciously followed and compared across large retinal distances. The second system is a segmentation mechanism that operates at higher temporal frequencies but only over a short range.

Discussions: This study provides an evidence of altered projections of corticobulbar and corticospinal pathways in stuttering speakers. The data and nTMS protocol may be useful in future studies investigating pathomechanisms of stuttering in different subtypes of stuttering in adults and children.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulatory device often publicized for its ability to enhance cognitive and behavioral performance. These enhancement claims, however, are predicated upon electrophysiological evidence and descriptions which are far from conclusive. In fact, a review of the literature reveals a number of important experimental and technical issues inherent with this device that are simply not being discussed in any meaningful manner. In this paper, we will consider five of these topics. The first, inter-subject variability, explores the extensive between- and within-group differences found within the tDCS literature and highlights the need to properly examine stimulatory response at the individual level. The second, intra-subject reliability, reviews the lack of data concerning tDCS response reliability over time and emphasizes the importance of this knowledge for appropriate stimulatory application. The third, sham stimulation and blinding, draws attention to the importance (yet relative lack) of proper control and blinding practices in the tDCS literature. The fourth, motor and cognitive interference, highlights the often overlooked body of research that suggests typical behaviors and cognitions undertaken during or following tDCS can impair or abolish the effects of stimulation. Finally, the fifth, electric current influences, underscores several largely ignored variables (such as hair thickness and electrode attachments methods) influential to tDCS electric current density and flow.Through this paper, we hope to increase awareness and start an ongoing dialogue of these important issues which speak to the efficacy, reliability, and mechanistic foundations of tDCS.

The fine temporal structure of events influences the spatial grouping and segmentation of visual-scene elements. Although adjacent regions flickering asynchronously at high temporal frequencies appear identical, the visual system signals a boundary between them. These "phantom contours" disappear when the gap between regions exceeds a critical value (g(max)). We used g(max) as an index of neuronal receptive-field size to compare with known receptive-field data from along the visual pathway and thus infer the location of the mechanism responsible for fast temporal segmentation. Observers viewed a circular stimulus reversing in luminance contrast at 20 Hz for 500 ms. A gap of constant retinal eccentricity segmented each stimulus quadrant; on each trial, participants identified a target quadrant containing counterphasing inner and outer segments. Through varying the gap width, g(max) was determined at a range of retinal eccentricities. We found that g(max) increased from 0.3° to 0.8° for eccentricities from 2° to 12°. These values correspond to receptive-field diameters of neurons in primary visual cortex that have been reported in single-cell and fMRI studies and are consistent with the spatial limitations of motion detection. In a further experiment, we found that modulation sensitivity depended critically on the length of the contour and could be predicted by a simple model of spatial summation in early cortical neurons. The results suggest that temporal segmentation is achieved by neurons at the earliest cortical stages of visual processing, most likely in primary visual cortex.

Cracking of a mixture of cis/trans -decalin was carried out over small crystallite rare-earth containing Y zeolites (REHY). Results showed that, although the reactivity of cis -decalin is much higher than that of trans -decalin, no influence of crystallite size was detected, as an indication that differences in reactivity should be attributed to differences in the structure of the reacting molecules, and not to the characteristics of the zeolite. In fact, deuterium exchange between deuterated HY zeolite and decalin revealed that cis -decalin is much more reactive than its trans -isomer. Trans -decalin, according to its structure minimized by molecular mechanic force field MM2, presents a more hindered tertiary CH bond, therefore making protonation and the formation of adsorbed carbocations difficult.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee has become one of the most frequently requested musculoskeletal imaging examinations. The soft tissue discrimination possible with MRI allows distinct differentiation of cortex, marrow, ligaments, tendons, muscle, synovium, vascular, and cartilaginous elements of the knee. It is very accurate and excels in having a very high negative predictive value. The normal MRI of the knee, then, is very accurate in excluding internal derangement, especially of the menisci. Because MRI has unsurpassed tissue contrast and resolution and the ability to image in multiple planes, it has been accepted as an indispensable tool in the evaluation of meniscal disorders. Where MRI is readily available, orthopaedic surgeons have an excellent imaging tool they can use in supplementing their clinical examination. As a subscriber to this imaging modality, it is imperative that the orthopaedic surgeon understand magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the menisci with particular attention to diagnostic interpretation of meniscal tears and potential pitfalls that may mimic meniscal tears.

Perceptual decision making is believed to be driven by the accumulation of sensory evidence following stimulus encoding. More controversially, some studies report that neural activity preceding the stimulus also affects the decision process. We used a multivariate pattern classification approach for the analysis of the human electroencephalogram (EEG) to decode choice outcomes in a perceptual decision task from spatially and temporally distributed patterns of brain signals. When stimuli provided discriminative information, choice outcomes were predicted by neural activity following stimulus encoding; when stimuli provided no discriminative information, choice outcomes were predicted by neural activity preceding the stimulus. Moreover, in the absence of discriminative information, the recent choice history primed the choices on subsequent trials. A diffusion model fitted to the choice probabilities and response time distributions showed that the starting point of the evidence accumulation process was shifted toward the previous choice, consistent with the hypothesis that choice priming biases the accumulation process toward a decision boundary. This bias is reflected in prestimulus brain activity, which, in turn, becomes predictive of future decisions. Our results provide a model of how non-stimulus-driven decision making in humans could be accomplished on a neural level.

The original aim was to examine the effect of perceived distance, induced by the Ponzo illusion, on left/right asymmetries for line bisection. In Experiment 1, university students ( n = 29) made left/right bisection judgements for lines presented in the lower or upper half of the screen against backgrounds of the Ponzo stimuli, or a baseline. While the Ponzo illusion had relatively little effect on line bisection, elevation in the baseline condition had a strong effect, whereby the leftward bias was increased for upper lines. Experiment 2 ( n = 17) eliminated the effect of elevation by presenting the line in the middle and moving the Ponzo stimuli relative to the line. Despite this change, the leftward bias was still stronger in the upper condition in the baseline condition. The final experiment ( n = 17) investigated whether upper/lower visual stimulation, which was irrelevant to the task, affected asymmetries for line bisection. The results revealed that a rectangle presented in the upper half of the screen increased the leftward line bisection bias relative to a baseline and lower stimulation condition. These results corroborate neuroimaging research, showing increased right parietal activation associated with shifts of attention into the upper hemispace. This increased right parietal activation may increase the leftward attentional bias—resulting in a stronger leftward bias for line bisection.

Summary A study has been carried out to evaluate the possible cellular effects induced by image diagnostic ultrasound on murine spermatogenetic cells. Exposure to ultrasound was carried out using a commercial diagnostic instrument that operates in B-mode. Male hybrid F1 mice, aged 8–10 weeks, were exposed to ultrasound for 30 min and observed from 7 to 35 days after treatment. Flow cytometric analysis has been used to monitor the relative frequency of the different types of spermatogenetic cells. This analytical approach showed changes in cell frequency in the compartment containing elongated spermatids which was used as an end-point. A statistically significant decrease in the frequency of this cell type was observed 21, 28 and 35 days after exposure. These changes suggest that there may be a cytotoxic and/or cytostatic effect on spermatocytes and spermatogonia. These results showed that image diagnostic ultrasound induces effects on murine spermatogenesis at cellular level and that the flow cytometric approach makes it possible to identify quantitative cellular changes with reference to specific cell type.

Binocular rivalry has been used to study a wide range of visual processes, from the integration of low-level features to the selection of signals that reach awareness. However, many of these studies do not distinguish between early and late phases of rivalry. There is clear evidence that the ‘onset’ stage of rivalry is characterized by stable, yet idiosyncratic biases that are independent of the subsequent alternations and perceptual biases experienced during sustained rivalry. Low-level stimulus features have robust effects in the onset phase that are not seen in sustained rivalry, suggesting these phases are driven by different neural mechanisms. The effects of high-level cognitive and affective factors at onset are less clear but also show differences from their effects in sustained viewing. These findings have important implications for the interpretation of any rivalry experiments using brief presentation paradigms and for understanding how the brain copes with binocular discrepancies in natural viewing conditions in which our eyes constantly move around an ever-changing environment. This review will summarize current research and explore the factors influencing this ‘onset’ stage.

It has been observed that various types of benign breast disease are associated to an increased risk of breast cancer. The biological significance of this association remains unclear: both benign and malignant lesions could independently have a common set of risk factors. The cellular DNA content of biopsy samples from 47 breast benign lesions was analyzed by flow cytometry. Flow cytometric measurements evidenced that 11/47 cases showed at least one aneuploid cell subpopulation. The presence of aneuploid subpopulations in benign lesions could be related to an unknown cellular alteration predisponding the developement of benign and malignant lesions independently.

Distinct cognitive and neural mechanisms underlie perception and action in near (within-reach) and far (outside-reach) space. Objects in far space can be brought into the brain’s near-space through tool-use. We determined whether a near object can be pushed into far space by changing the pictorial context in which it occurs. Participants (n = 372) made relative length judgements for lines presented in near space, but superimposed over photographs of near and far objects. The left segment of the line was overestimated in the baseline and near-context conditions whereas the right was overestimated in the far-context. The change from leftward to rightward overestimation is the same when lines are physically shifted from near to far space. Because participants did not have to do anything in relation to the photograph, the results suggest that simply viewing images with a near/far context can cause a shift of attention along the distal/proximal axis, which may reflect differential activation of the ventral/dorsal visual streams. A study has been carried out to investigate the possible effects caused by Doppler diagnostic ultrasound on murine spermatogenesis. The frequency of the different types of cells has been analyzed using flow cytometry. Exposure to ultrasound was carried out using a commercial device used in diagnostic conditions. Male hybrid mice were exposed to ultrasound for 30 min and observed from 7 to 35 days after treatment. Flow cytometrical analysis showed changes in the relative frequency of the elongated spermatids and this was used as an end-point. A statistically significant decrease in the frequency of this cell type was observed after 7 and 35 days with both pulsed and continuous ultrasound. With the former, a decrease was also seen in this compartment after 14 and 21 days. Our results have shown that diagnostic ultrasound used in the Doppler technique induces effects on specific cell types of murine spermatogenesis.

This study explored the mechanisms that underlie asymmetries for the horizontal vertical illusion (HVI), which deceives length perception, so that a vertical line is perceived as longer than a horizontal line of equivalent length. In Experiment 1, university students (n = 14) made length judgements for vertical and horizontal lines. The vertical line was shifted in eight steps from the far left of the horizontal line (⌊) to the far right (⌋). An HVI was observed for the medial positions (⊥), which diminished towards the lateral positions. The HVI was also stronger when the vertical line was on the left. Because the left/right asymmetry changed as a function of lateral/medial position, the asymmetry within the HVI stimulus is most likely the result of pseudoneglect, which affects judgements of horizontal length. In Experiment 2, participants (n = 15) made judgements for HVI stimuli presented to the left- and right-hemispace and the midline. The HVI was stronger in the left hemispace. Because the asymmetry between the left- and right-hemispaces did not interact with the asymmetry within the stimuli, it was concluded that the asymmetry between hemispatial positions was the result of right hemisphere susceptibility to illusory geometrical effects whereas the asymmetry within the stimulus is related to an object-centred attentional asymmetry. The HVI is affected by asymmetries in length judgements and susceptibility to illusions and may provide interesting insights into attentional disorders in clinical populations, such as neglect.

Flow cytometric analysis of cellular DNA content was performed on 78 biopsy bladder samples obtained from 61 patients with bladder tumors. All 6 normal tissue samples and 1 benign papilloma exhibited a cytometrically diploid DNA distribution, while 39 of 60 bladder carcinomas exhibited at least one aneuploid cell subpopulation. Furthermore, 13 of 39 aneuploid tumors were characterized by the presence of more than one aneuploid cell subpopulation. The results indicate a significant relationship between cytometric ploidy and morphological classification and stage: the occurrence of subpopulations with abnormal DNA content is associated with the increase in differentiation grade and stage. A significant statistical difference in the survival pattern between the diploid and aneuploid groups was observed. The percent of S cells extracted from DNA content distribution histograms indicates a statistically significant difference (p less than 0.01) between normal tissue (3.7 +/- 1.8), diploid tumor (8.4 +/- 3.9) and aneuploid tumor (14.9 +/- 6.0). Moreover the percent of S-phase cells increases with grade in only the aneuploid subgroup. Our results suggest that cytometric parameters in association with morphological and clinical criteria can contribute to a more accurate characterization of bladder tumors in prognostic terms.

The effects of heat on mouse spermatogenesis have been determined using both testis weight and flow cytometrically determined DNA content distribution as experimental end-points. Temperatures of 38-42 degrees C and exposure times of 20-60 min have been tested. The results concerning the testis weight substantially confirm those reported by other authors (Hand et al. 1979). The measurement of DNA content distributions shows a relatively higher depletion, 14 days after treatment, of the cytometric compartment containing elongated spermatids in respect to that containing round spermatids. The analysis of the cytotoxic effects, monitored 14 vs. 28 days after treatment, as a function of the exposure time at a given temperature, or of the temperature for a fixed exposure time, indicates that, in the course of spermatogenesis, late spermatocytes are more sensitive to heat than differentiated spermatogonia. Following the approach based on flow cytometry, the effect of exposures as low as 20 min at 38 degrees C can be appreciated.
