1. First beam loss measurements in the SuperKEKB positron ring using the fast luminosity monitor diamond sensors

Abstract

SuperKEKB is a very high luminosity e^{+}e^{−} collider consisting of a low energy ring (LER) of positrons of 4 GeV and a high energy ring (HER) of electrons of 7 GeV. The high luminosity will be achieved thanks to the nanobeam scheme, where very strongly focused beams (σ_{y}=60 nm) will collide at a large crossing angle of 83 mrad. To maintain high luminosity operation, fast luminosity monitoring is essential in the presence of dynamic instabilities, for feedback and optimization. Fast luminosity monitors consisting of a single crystalline diamond sensor (LAL), a Cherenkov and scintillator detector (KEK) were placed in both rings downstream of the IP (interaction point) to measure the signal from the radiative Bhabha process at zero photon scattering angle (σ≈200 mbarn). During single beam commissioning of SuperKEKB, the fast luminosity monitors were used as beam loss monitors to measure the single beam losses (beam-gas bremsstrahlung, Touschek scattering, Coulomb scattering). In this paper, a detailed description of the experimental setup, the data acquisition scheme, the data analysis and the comparison with the simulation for the diamond sensors, will be reported.

2. Creep Tests on Salt Samples Performed at Very Small Stresses

Abstract

ABSTRACT: From 1996 to 2021, uniaxial creep tests were performed on salt samples in dead-end drifts of the Varangéville (France) and Altaussee (Austria) mines to take advantage of constant temperature and hygrometry. The applied loads were from 0.05 MPa (relative) to 4.5 MPa, i.e., much smaller than the loads currently applied during standard creep tests performed at the laboratory. Main conclusions are: (1) Steady state is reached after a long period (longer than 8 months). (2) Cumulated transient creep is relatively large (3) Strain rates are faster (than extrapolated from high stresses) by 4-5 orders of magnitude (4) Steady state strain rate is a linear function of the applied stress (approximately) in the σ < 3 MPa domain (5) Strain rate is a decreasing function of grain size (6) The transition between the linear (n = 1) and the non-linear (n = 3 to 5) behavior seems to range between 3 MPa and 4.5 MPa (7) No creep is observed in a very dry environment (8) No threshold for salt creep (or smaller than 0.05 MPa) is observed (9) In the small stress domain, reverse creep is observed. 1. INTRODUCTION It has been suspected for long (Spiers et al., 1990; Urai and Spiers, 2007) that, in the small deviatoric stress domain (σ < 3 MPa), the governing mechanism for salt creep was pressure solution — rather than dislocation creep. A consequence should be that creep rate in this domain is much faster - by several orders of magnitude - than extrapolated from tests performed in the high stress domain. In addition, creep rate should be a decreasing function of grain size; it should be a linear function of the applied stress, and the presence of a small amount of brine at the grains interface should be a necessary condition for active creep. These statements were based on theoretical arguments, geological evidence and the results of tests performed on artificial salt.

Abstract

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgro\ unds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector., Comment: 22 Pages, 33 figures

Abstract

Inverse Compton Scattering provides a unique way to produce quasi-monochromatic X-rays via the interaction of relativistic electrons with a laser pulse. This process has the advantage of producing a very high flux of X-rays with energies above a few tens of keV for a modest electron beam energy. In addition the output beam divergence is much larger than in classical synchrotron light sources and the X-ray beam is thus easier to manipulate. We present an X-ray source under construction at Paris-Sud University, ThomX. This source has a small footprint of 70m2 compared to synchrotron light sources and uses a 50MeV electron beam that collides at 16.7MHz with a few picosecond pulsed laser beam which power is enhanced at the state of the art. In the nominal design the enhanced average laser-beam power is 600kW and X-rays between 30 and 50 keV are produced with a flux of 1013 photons per second. This energy range as well as the energy-angular dependence due to the Compton back-scattering process are suitable for societal applications like radiotherapy or art history. We use a prototype cavity to perform R&D for the ThomX source. Various diagnostics like real time finesse measurements or active coupling enhancement are under study on this test cavity to increase the achievable stored power. We will present the ongoing developments along with the results we obtained. A very high finesse optical cavity (F > 28000) is used, which is one of the highest finesse cavities in pulsed regime. The numerous challenges and solutions to mitigate the related issues will be presented.

Abstract

Available online 7 June 2016; International audience; Operations of a diamond sensor placed in a high average-intensity beam of photons with energies of a few MeV are reported. Data was taken at the HIγS facility of TUNL in parasitic mode while nuclear-physics experiments were taking place. The energies of the photons during data taking were 2, 3 and 7 MeV with circular and linear polarisations of the photon beam. The collected charge appears to be constant at these energies, which is consistent with simulations. A dedicated run with bunches of photons separated by 16 ns shows that they are unambiguously distinguished. This is possible thanks to a FWHM of the pulses measured to be about 6 ns. The results indicate that the tested apparatus fulfils the requirements for a fast monitoring detector for the ELI-NP source currently under construction, which motivates this work, and demonstrates for the first time the capabilities of such detectors in high average-intensity photon beams.

Abstract

We report and discuss high-flux generation of circularly polarized γ-rays by means of Compton scattering. The γ-ray beam results from the collision of an external-cavity-enhanced infrared laser beam and a low emittance relativistic electron beam. By operating a non-planar bow-tie high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot cavity coupled to a storage ring, we have recorded a flux of up to (3.5 ± 0.3) × 108 photons per second with a mean measured energy of 24 MeV. The γ-ray flux has been sustained for several hours. In particular, we were able to measure a record value of up to 400 γ-rays per collision in a full bandwidth. Moreover, the impact of Compton scattering on the electron beam dynamics could be observed resulting in a reduction of the electron beam lifetime correlated to the laser power stored in the Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate that the electron beam lifetime provides an independent and consistent determination of the γ-ray flux. Furthermore, a reduction of the γ-ray flux due to intrabeam scattering has clearly been identified. These results, obtained on an accelerator test facility, warrant potential scaling and revealed both expected and yet unobserved effects. They set the baseline for further scaling of the future Compton sources under development around the world.

Abstract

This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. Abstract

Se preparo una mezcla con seis bacterias aisladas de peces y se sometieron a distintos tratamientos termicos (30 °C y 60 °C, 20 s) y de conservantes quimicos, por separado y en combinacion. Los conservantes quimicos empleados fueron sorbato de potasio (PS, 1%), fosfato trisodico (TSP, 10%) y pirofosfato tetrasodico (TSPP, 3%). El calentamiento a 60 °C durante 20 s redujo una media de 2.0 log cfu/mL del recuento total de bacterias. Se observo un efecto sinergico marcado cuando el calor precedia a los tratamientos quimicos, de modo mas evidente para el TSPP y para el sorbato de potasio; sin embargo no fue significativo el efecto cuando los tratamientos quimicos se aplicaron solos. El efecto aumento cuando los conservantes quimicos se aplicaron antes del calor, segun el orden decreciente TSP, TSPP y sorbato; las reducciones obtenidas fueron de mas de 5.0, 4.0 y 3.0 log cfu/mL, respectivamente. El efecto sinergico dependio del tipo de aditivo quimico y tambien de la secuencia de los tratamientos. Las bacterias identificadas como "Shewanella putrefaciens" y "Pseudomonas putida" fueron las mas resistentes al calor; "Brochothrix thermosphacta" y "Lactobacillus plantarum" mostraron mas resistencia al tratamiento con TSP. Estas bacterias de la mezcla revelaron una alta sensibilidad al tratamiento combinado TSP/calor; las celulas bacterianas identificadas como "Enterobacter spp." fueron las mas resistentes a este tratamiento.

Abstract

As part of the positron source R&D for future $e^+-e^-$ colliders and Compton based compact light sources, a high finesse non-planar four-mirror Fabry-Perot cavity has recently been installed at the ATF (KEK, Tsukuba, Japan). The first measurements of the gamma ray flux produced with a such cavity using a pulsed laser is presented here. We demonstrate the production of a flux of 2.7 $\pm$ 0.2 gamma rays per bunch crossing ($\sim3\times10^6$ gammas per second) during the commissioning.

Abstract

As part of the R&D toward the production of high flux of polarised Gamma-rays we have designed and built a non-planar four-mirror optical cavity with a high finesse and operated it at a particle accelerator. We report on the main challenges of such cavity, such as the design of a suitable laser based on fiber technology, the mechanical difficulties of having a high tunability and a high mechanical stability in an accelerator environment and the active stabilization of such cavity by implementing a double feedback loop in a FPGA.

Abstract

International audience; Recently LAL (Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineaire, Orsay France) has launched an R&D program that involves optical Fabry-Perot resonators and high power fibre lasers. This program is part of the global effort aiming at the design of a polarised positron source for the next linear collider (ILC or CLIC). At the same time an important effort is devoted to the possible applications of this technology at lower energy for medical and industrial applications. In this framework a collaboration was started between different French laboratories (RadioThomX project) and industrial partners to study the feasibility of a low energy machine that should provide a high x-ray flux (~ 1012 - 1013 X s-1 at 50 keV in the 10% energy bandwidth). In both the high and the low energy studies the designs are based on the possibility to increase the average flux by a high collision repetition frequency. Different options are explored at present. In the following we will give an overview of the LAL activities, the physics contexts and the possible applications of the high average power Fabry-Perot technology applied to Compton scattering experiments.

A method was developed for the detection and isolation, within a population of lactic acid bacteria, of strains producing exclusively the l -(+)- isomer of lactic acid; the visual detection of colonies of these particular strains can be carried out directly on agar plates (50 to 70 colonies per plate). The method is based on an enzymatic stereospecific reaction involving d -(−)-lactate dehydrogenase and linked to a staining reaction; the diffusion area of the d -(−)- isomer stains red around the d -(−)- and the dl -lactic acid-producing colonies, while the colonies producing exclusively l -(+)-lactic acid are detected by the absence of the colored halo. The intensity of staining was increased when cellulose powder and Tween 20 were added to the agar medium.

Abstract

We report and discuss high-flux generation of circularly polarized γ-rays by means of Compton scattering. The γ-ray beam results from the collision of an external-cavity-enhanced infrared laser beam and a low emittance relativistic electron beam. By operating a non-planar bow-tie high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot cavity coupled to a storage ring, we have recorded a flux of up to (3.5 ± 0.3) × 10 8 photons per second with a mean measured energy of 24 MeV. The γ-ray flux has been sustained for several hours. In particular, we were able to measure a record value of up to 400 γ-rays per collision in a full bandwidth. Moreover, the impact of Compton scattering on the electron beam dynamics could be observed resulting in a reduction of the electron beam lifetime correlated to the laser power stored in the Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate that the electron beam lifetime provides an independent and consistent determination of the γ-ray flux. Furthermore, a reduction of the γ-ray flux due to intrabeam scattering has clearly been identified. These results, obtained on an accelerator test facility, warrant potential scaling and revealed both expected and yet unobserved effects. They set the baseline for further scaling of the future Compton sources under development around the world.
