Abstract: Abstract The study of open charm meson production provides an efficient tool for the investigation of the properties of hot and dense matter formed in nucleus–nucleus collisions. The interpretation of the existing di-muon data from the CERN SPS suffers from a lack of knowledge on the mechanism and properties of the open charm particle production. Due to this, the heavy-ion programme of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS has been extended by precise measurements of charm hadrons with short lifetimes. A new Vertex Detector for measurements of the rare processes of open charm production in nucleus–nucleus collisions was designed to meet the challenges of track registration and high resolution in primary and secondary vertex reconstruction. A small-acceptance version of the vertex detector was installed in 2016 and tested with Pb + Pb collisions at 150 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c . It was also operating during the physics data taking on Xe + La and Pb + Pb collisions at 150 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c conducted in 2017 and 2018. This paper presents the detector design and construction, data calibration, event reconstruction, and analysis procedure.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 mesons in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ s NN = 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) was measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 was determined to be $$0.162 \pm 0.001 (stat.) \pm 0.011 (sys.)$$ 0.162 ± 0.001 ( s t a t . ) ± 0.011 ( s y s . ) . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data.

Abstract: Abstract Double-differential yields of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of $$26\times 10^6$$ 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 ( $$6.73 \pm 0.25\pm 0.67)\times 10^{-4}$$ 6.73 ± 0.25 ± 0.67 ) × 10 - 4 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 ( $$2.71 \pm 0.18\pm 0.18)\times 10^{-4}$$ 2.71 ± 0.18 ± 0.18 ) × 10 - 4 . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text {Ge}\text {V}/c$$ Ge / c beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $$\omega $$ ω and strongly intensive measures $$\Sigma $$ Σ and $$\Delta $$ Δ . These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is preformed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus–nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

Abstract: Abstract The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central $${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+ $${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in the 20% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be+ $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos, Urqmd, Ampt, Phsd and Smash models.

Abstract: Abstract A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $$\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $$ Δ η Δ ϕ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $$\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$$ Ge / c . Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $$C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$$ C ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $$(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$$ ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) = ( 0 , 0 ) with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton–proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured in central Pb + Pb collisions and inelastic p+p interactions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon–nucleon and central Pb + Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon in central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions is close to that in central Pb + Pb collisions up to 75 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c . However, at the top SPS energy the result lies between those for nucleon–nucleon and Pb + Pb interactions. The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$\Xi (1321)^{-}$$ Ξ ( 1321 ) - and $$\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ ( 1321 ) + hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c . Double differential distributions in rapidity $${y}$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{T}$$ p T are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - and $$\overline{\Xi }{^+} $$ Ξ ¯ + . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract: Abstract The measurement of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K+π- decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ sNN=17.3 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }$$ GeV ) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 signal and double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 mesons was found to be $$(78.44 \pm 0.38 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 6.0 \mathrm {(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$$ (78.44±0.38(stat)±6.0(sys))·10-3 . The NA61/SHINEresults are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Abstract: Abstract Results on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $$\phi \rightarrow K^+ K^- $$ ϕ→K+K- decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons as a function of rapidity $$y$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for proton beam momenta of $$80 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 80GeV/c and $$158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 158GeV/c , as well as single differential spectra of $$y$$ y or $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for beam momentum of $$40 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 40GeV/c . The corresponding total $$\phi $$ ϕ yields per inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in $$p + p$$ p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons in $$p + p$$ p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in $$\mathrm{Pb} + \mathrm{Pb}$$ Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observations.

15. Factors Affecting Consonant Production Accuracy in Children with Cochlear Implants: Expressive Vocabulary and Maternal Education

Abstract: Background: Despite the ability of cochlear implants (CIs) to provide children with access to speech, there is considerable variability in spoken language outcomes. Research aimed at identifying factors influencing speech production accuracy is needed. Aims: To characterize the consonant production accuracy of children with cochlear implants (CWCI) and an age-matched group of children with typical hearing (CWTH) and to explore several factors that potentially affect the ability of both groups to accurately produce consonants. Methods & Procedures: We administered the Bankson-Bernthal Test of Phonology (BBTOP) to a group of 25 CWCI (mean age = 4;9, SD = 1;6, range = 3;2-8;5) implanted prior to 30 months of age with a mean duration of implant usage of 3;6 and an age-matched group of 25 CWTH (mean age = 5;0, SD = 1;6, range = 3;1-8;6). The recorded results were transcribed, and the accuracy of the target consonants was determined. Expressive vocabulary size estimates were obtained from a language sample using the number of different words (NDW). A parent questionnaire provided information about maternal education, duration of CIs experience and other demographic characteristics of each child. Outcomes & Results: The CWCI group demonstrated some similarities to, and some differences from, their hearing peers. The CWCI demonstrated poorer consonant production accuracy overall and in various phonetic categories and word positions. However, both groups produced initial consonants more accurately than final consonants. Whilst CWCI had poorer production accuracy than CWTH for all phonetic categories (stops, nasals, fricatives, affricates, liquids and glides and consonant clusters), both groups exhibited similar error patterns across categories. For CWCI, the factors most related to consonant production accuracy when considered individually were expressive vocabulary size, followed by duration of CI experience, chronological age, maternal education and gender. The combination of maternal education and vocabulary size resulted in the best model of consonant production accuracy for this group. For the CWTH, chronological age followed by vocabulary size were most related to consonant production accuracy. No combination of factors yielded an improved model for the CWTH. Conclusions & Implications: Whilst group differences in production accuracy between the CWCI and CWTH were found, the pattern of errors was similar for the two groups of children, suggesting that the children are at earlier stages of overall consonant production development. Although duration of CI experience was a significant covariate in a single-variable model of consonant production accuracy for CWCI, the best multivariate model of consonant production accuracy for these children was based on the combination of expressive vocabulary size and maternal education.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of the $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± , $$K^\pm $$ K± , and proton double differential yields emitted from the surface of the 90-$$\hbox {cm}$$ cm -long carbon target (T2K replica) were performed for the incoming $$31\,$$ 31 $$\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$$ GeV/c protons with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS using data collected during 2010 run. The double differential $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± yields were measured with increased precision compared to the previously published NA61/SHINE results, while the $$K^\pm $$ K± and proton yields were obtained for the first time. A strategy for dealing with the dependence of the results on the incoming proton beam profile is proposed. The purpose of these measurements is to reduce significantly the (anti)neutrino flux uncertainty in the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment by constraining the production of (anti)neutrino ancestors coming from the T2K target.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± , K$$^\pm $$ ± , p and $${\bar{\text {p}}}$$ p¯ produced in inelastic p + p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s} = $$ s= 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV , respectively) were performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer. Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 , $$\omega $$ ω and K $$^{*0}$$ ∗ 0 spectra in $$\pi ^{-} + $$ π - + C production interactions at 158 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c and $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 spectra at 350 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Spectra are presented as a function of the Feynman’s variable $$x_\text {F}$$ x F in the range $$0< x_\text {F} < 1$$ 0 < x F < 1 and $$0< x_\text {F} < 0.5$$ 0 < x F < 0.5 for 158 and 350 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c respectively. Furthermore, we show comparisons with previous measurements and predictions of several hadronic interaction models. These measurements are essential for a better understanding of hadronic shower development and for improving the modeling of cosmic ray air showers.

Abstract: Focused lung ultrasound (FLUS) has high diagnostic accuracy in many common conditions seen in a variety of emergency settings. Competencies are essential for diagnostic success and patient safety but can be challenging to acquire in clinical environments. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) offers an interactive risk-free learning environment and is progressing as an educational tool. First, this study explored the educational impact of novice FLUS users participating in a gamified or non-gamified IVR training module in FLUS by comparing test scores using a test with proven validity evidence. Second, the learning effect was assessed by comparing scores of each group with known test scores of novices, intermediates and experienced users in FLUS. A total of 48 participants were included: 24 received gamified and 24 received non-gamified IVR training. No significant difference was found between gamified (mean = 15.5 points) and non-gamified (mean = 15.2 points), indicating that chosen gamification elements for our setup did not affect learning outcome (p = 0.66). The mean scores of both groups did not significantly differ from those of known intermediate users in FLUS (gamified p = 0.63, non-gamified p = 0.24), indicating that both IVR modules could be used as unsupervised out-of-hospital training for novice trainees in FLUS.

27. Surveying cliff-nesting seabirds with unoccupied aircraft systems in the Gulf of Alaska

Abstract: Drones, or unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS), can transform the way scientific information on wildlife populations is collected. UAS surveys produce accurate estimates of ground-nesting seabirds and a variety of waterbirds, but few studies have examined the trade-offs of this methodology for counting cliff-nesting seabirds. In this study, we examined how different UAS survey parameters might influence seabird counts for population monitoring and assessed behavioral responses to aerial surveys for three sub-Arctic seabird taxa in the Gulf of Alaska: common murres (Uria aalge), black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla), and pelagic and double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax pelagicus and Phalacrocorax auritus). We flew two commercially available models of UAS in planned approaches at different speeds and distances from colonies during incubation and chick-rearing periods. We compared counts from UAS-derived images with those from vessel-based photography and assessed video recordings of individual birds’ behaviors for evidence of disturbance during UAS operations and control phases. Count estimates from UAS images were similar to or higher than those from conventional vessel-based images, and UAS were particularly effective at photographing birds at sites with high cliff walls or complex topography. We observed no significant behavioral responses to the UAS by murres or cormorants, but we did observe flushing by black-legged kittiwakes during UAS flights; most of these birds were not incubating or brooding. At both the colony and individual level, we observed slightly greater responses to the smaller UAS platform and closer approaches. These results inform both species specific and general best practices for research and recreational usage of UAS near cliff-nesting seabird colonies.

Abstract: Equine influenza virus is a common cause of respiratory disease in equids. Few reports describe clinical presentation and disease progression in donkeys.Describe the clinical and diagnostic findings, outcome, and pathologic lesions associated with influenza pneumonia in donkeys.Thirteen unvaccinated donkeys ranging from 1 week to 12 years of age and sharing clinical signs and exposure history.Retrospective case series. Medical records from June to July 2020 at the Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital and collaborating referring veterinary practices were reviewed. The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular testing, virus isolation, and partial genetic and phylogenetic analysis of the virus.Survival in donkeys1 year old was 16.6% (1/6) whereas survival in animals1 year of age was 85.7% (6/7). Hemagglutinin gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis confirmed a contemporary clade 1 Florida sublineage H3 virus as the causative agent.Clinical signs of equine influenza virus infection in donkeys are similar to those observed in horses. Prognosis for survival generally is good, but deaths have been observed especially in foals born to seronegative dams. This finding emphasizes the importance of prenatal vaccination protocols in all equids, including donkeys.

Abstract: This paper considers Berkeley’s use of Plato in Siris. Berkeley’s engagement with ancient thinkers in Siris has been a source of puzzlement for many readers. In this paper I focus on Siris § 266. In particular, I consider why Berkeley says of the Platonists that they “distinguished the primary qualities in bodies from the secondary” and why, given his own well-known misgivings about the distinction, he characterizes this as part of a “notion of the true system of the world.” I argue that in Siris Berkeley accepts a distinctive form of corpuscularianism, and that he thinks a distinction between primary and secondary qualities follows from this. I further argue that in § 266, and elsewhere in Siris, Berkeley engages in a careful reading of Plato’s Timaeus, which he uses to bolster his defense of the compatibility between corpuscularianism and his immaterialist idealism.

We compared three methods to estimate the population density of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virgnianus) in a section of Pilot Mountain State Park, NC, USA: (1) camera trapping using mark–resight ratios or (2) N-mixture modeling and (3) aerial thermal videography from a drone platform. All three methods yielded similar density estimates, suggesting that they converged on an accurate estimate. We also included environmental covariates in the N-mixture modeling to explore spatial habitat use, and we fit models for each season to understand temporal changes in population density. Deer occurred in greater densities on warmer, south-facing slopes in the autumn and winter and on cooler north-facing slopes and in areas with flatter terrain in the summer. Seasonal density estimates over two years suggested an annual cycle of higher densities in autumn and winter than in summer, indicating that the region may function as a refuge during the hunting season.

Abstract: Background The incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is increasing. Co-medication is clinically important in addition to the treatment of IBD. However, real-world data on co-medication is sparse. Thus, we aimed to describe whether a diagnosis of IBD affects the prescription pattern of co-medication used to treat other diseases in adult-onset and elderly-onset IBD. Methods This nationwide cohort study utilized data from Danish Health Registers. We included patients with adult-onset of IBD (18-59 years of age) and elderly-onset of IBD (+60 years of age) from 1998-2018 with three years of follow-up after the diagnosis for all patients. We identified patients who had at least two diagnoses of IBD in The National Patient Register. We described redeemed prescriptions of 11 common groups for medication used to treat conditions other than IBD using data from The Danish National Prescription Registry. Results We identified 36,165 incident patients. We created two cohorts; 27,386 (75%) had adult-onset IBD, and 8,779 (25%) patients had elderly-onset IBD, Table 1. The proportion of patients with redeemed prescriptions in both cohorts was statistically significantly increased one and three years after onset of IBD for antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives/hypnotics, opioids, non-opioid analgesics, antidiabetics, and proton pump inhibitors, compared to one and three years before diagnosis, Figure 1 & Figure 2. Conclusion The proportion of patients with redeemed prescriptions for antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives/hypnotics, opioids, non-opioid analgesics, antidiabetics, and proton pump inhibitors was significantly increased one and three years after a diagnosis of IBD compared to one and three years before diagnosis.

Abstract: The clinical utility of combining extracellular matrix (ECM) biomarkers to predict the development of impaired systolic function following acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains largely undetermined. A combination of ELISA and multiplexing assays were performed to measure matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9, periostin, N-terminal type I procollagen (PINP) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in plasma samples from 120 AMI patients. All patients had an echocardiogram within 1 year of AMI, and were divided into impaired (n = 37, LVEF n = 83, LVEF ≥ 50%) systolic function groups. Exploratory factor analysis was performed on log-transformed biomarkers using principle axis analysis with Oblimin rotation. Cluster analysis was performed on log-transformed and normalised biomarkers using Ward’s method of minimum variance and the squared Euclidean distance metric. Upon univariate analysis, current smoking, prescription of ACE inhibitors at discharge, peak hsTnT > 610 ng/L (median), MMP-8 levels, Factor 1 scores and Cluster One assignment were predictive of impaired systolic function. Upon multivariate analysis, Cluster One assignment (odds ratio [95% CI], 2.74 [1.04–7.23], p = 0.04) remained an independent predictor of systolic dysfunction in combination with clinical variables. These observations support the usefulness of combining ECM biomarkers using cluster analysis for predicting the development of impaired systolic function in AMI patients.

Abstract: Plain language summary The cardiac extracellular matrix (ECM) maintains the structural integrity of the heart, and can be measured in human circulation using ECM biomarkers. Understanding the levels of variation and temporal dynamics that exist in ECM biomarkers following a heart attack is important for establishing an optimal biomarker panel that may be useful in heart research. A single blood sample was collected from 12 healthy volunteers. Multiple bloods samples were collected from 23 heart attack patients during hospital admission (day 1–3) and 6 months post heart attack. About 12 ECM biomarkers were measured from these blood samples. When compared with healthy levels, seven ECM biomarkers were significantly altered in heart attack patients, and six of these biomarkers displayed stable expression during hospital admission. Variability existed within biomarker levels and this was not well described by traditional heart attack risk factors, such as age or heart attack size. Thus, the source of biomarker variability remains unknown in this study. Overall, we suggest these seven ECM biomarkers may be of interest for future studies in the setting of heart attack research.

Abstract: Background Interest has mounted into the use of objective clinical biomarkers for traumatic brain injury (TBI). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesise the existing evidence investigating the use of serum & plasma biomarkers to exclude significant intracranial injuries seen on CT head scans in patients that present to ED with TBI. Methods The primary outcome was to review the diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity & specificity) of S100B, GFAP and UCH-L1 to exclude significant intracranial pathology on CT head scan in adults presenting with TBI. Secondary outcomes investigated biomarker performance at different time points, in isolated TBI and multi-trauma and with pre-specified cut offs. Systematic searches were conducted on MEDLINE ® (via PubMed), Cochrane electronic databases and EMBASE from 1st January 2000 until June 2020. Bias was assessed using QUADAS 2 tool. A narrative synthesis and meta-analysis were performed. PROSPERO registration number CRD42020212206. Results After screening, 22 papers were included. The total number of patients with TBI was 9,416. There was significant variation regarding study design, population selection and the clinical threshold/decision rule for CT head request. The diagnostic accuracy of S100B as measured by the range of individual sensitivities and specificities were 63-100% and 5-58%, respectively. Individual sensitivities and specificities for GFAP were 67-100% and 0-89% and for UCH-L1 were 61-100% and 21-63.7% respectively. When measured within 3 hours individual sensitivities & specificities for S100B were 98-100% & 20-58% respectively. The quality of evidence for the primary outcome overall was low. The quality of evidence was low for all secondary outcomes apart from studies that used a pre-specified cut off for S100B which had a moderate strength of evidence. Conclusion The overall quality of evidence regarding the diagnostic accuracy of single biomarkers as a rule out for significant intracranial injury seen on CT head scans in ED patients with TBI is low. Based on current evidence, S100B is the only single biomarker with a validated clinical platform, pre-determined cut off threshold and moderate quality evidence; at this stage making it the biomarker of choice. More robust clinical outcome and economic impact data is required to support its incorporation into clinical decision tools.

Abstract: Recent evidence suggests that neutrophils are highly plastic cells that can display heterogeneous phenotypes. Low-density neutrophils (LDNs) have been described in many inflammatory conditions, and are thought to represent an immature, hyperactivated subtype of neutrophils. Neutrophils are significantly involved in the inflammatory response to myocardial infarction (MI), although we do not know the extent to which LDNs exist, or function, in MI. This study sought to determine the frequency and phenotype of LDNs in MI patients, compared to healthy subjects (HS). LDNs and normal-density neutrophils (NDNs) were isolated from the peripheral blood of MI subjects (n = 12) and HSs (n = 12) using density gradient centrifugation. LDNs and NDNs were analysed by flow cytometry to identify neutrophils (CD66b+CD15+CD14-CD3−CD19− cells) and examine neutrophil activation (CD11b, CD66b and CD15) and maturity (CD33 and CD16). We identified LDNs within the peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) fraction of blood, and this population is significantly enriched in MI patients (1.04 ± 0.75% of PBMCs), compared to HS (0.29 ± 0.24%, p = .003). Across both cohorts, LDNs express significantly higher levels of CD66b and CD15, indicating a heightened state of activation compared to NDNs. In this study, LDNs were described as CD33highCD16low, compared to CD33lowCD16high NDNs, indicating the immaturity of this neutrophil subtype. An increase in the frequency of hyperactivated, immature LDNs is an immunological feature of MI. We highlight a potential pathological role of LDNs in MI, which underscores the need to expand our current understanding of this subtype in MI and other cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

Measurement of those residual stresses has not previously been possible because the high radioactivity of the plates requires handling only by remote manipulation in a hot cell. Objective The incremental slitting method for measuring through-thickness stress profiles was modified, and a system for automated, remote operation was built and tested. Methods Experimental modifications consisted of replacing electric-discharge machining (EDM) with a small end mill and strain-gauge measurements with cantilever displacement measurements. The inverse method used to calculate stresses was the pulse-regularization method modified to allow discontinuities across material interfaces. The new system was validated by comparing with conventional slitting on a depleted U-10Mo (DU) fuel plate. Results The new system was applied to two measurements each on six as-fabricated (pre-irradiation) LEU miniature fuel plates. Variations between the measurements at two locations in the same plate were strongly correlated with measured geometrical heterogeneity in the plate—a tilt in the fuel foil. Compressive stresses in the U-10Mo were shown to increase from 20 to 250 MPa as the ratio of aluminum thickness to U-10Mo thickness increased causing increased constraint during cooling. Faster cooling rates during processing also increased stress magnitudes. Conclusions The measurements trends agreed with data in the literature from similar plates made with DU, which further validates the method. Because other methods are impractical in a hot cell, the modified slitting method is now poised for the first measurements of post-irradiation stresses.

44. Drones reveal spatial patterning of sympatric Alaskan pinniped species and drivers of their local distributions

Abstract: The Arctic and its adjacent ecosystems are undergoing rapid ecological reorganization in response to the effects of global climate change, and sentinel species provide critical updates as these changes unfold. This study leverages emerging remote sensing techniques to reveal fine-scale drivers of distribution and terrestrial habitat use of two sympatric sentinel species of the central Bering Sea, the Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii (Gray, 1864)) and the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus (Linnaeus, 1758)), at non-breeding haul-outs in the Pribilof Islands. We surveyed these species using unoccupied aircraft systems with thermal and visible-light photography, and we applied distributional modeling techniques to quantify the relative influence of habitat characteristics and social dynamics on the local distributions of these species. Drone imagery yielded locations and population counts of each species, and spatial data products allowed quantitative characterization of occupied sites, revealing that conspecific attraction is a driver of local site selection for both species, and Pacific harbor seals and northern fur seals are differentially limited by terrain characteristics. These findings represent new applications of species distribution modeling at local scales, made possible by ultra-high resolution drone surveillance and photogrammetric techniques, which add new spatial context to past observations and future scenarios in this changing ecosystem.

Abstract: Infants exposed to diabetic pregnancy are at higher risk of cardiomyopathy at birth and early onset cardiovascular disease (CVD) as adults. Using a rat model, we showed how fetal exposure to maternal diabetes causes cardiac disease through fuel-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, and that a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) exaggerates the risk. Diabetic pregnancy increases circulating maternal ketones which can have a cardioprotective effect, but whether diabetes-mediated complex I dysfunction impairs myocardial metabolism of ketones postnatally remains unknown. The objective of this study was to determine whether neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCM) from diabetes- and HFD-exposed offspring oxidize ketones as an alternative fuel source. To test our hypothesis, we developed a novel ketone stress test (KST) using extracellular flux analyses to compare real-time ß-hydroxybutyrate (βHOB) metabolism in NRCM. We also compared myocardial expression of genes responsible for ketone and lipid metabolism. NRCM had a dose-dependent increase in respiration with increasing concentrations of βHOB, demonstrating that both control and combination exposed NRCM can metabolize ketones postnatally. Ketone treatment also enhanced the glycolytic capacity of combination exposed NRCM with a dose-dependent increase in the glucose-mediated proton efflux rate (PER) from CO2 (aerobic glycolysis) alongside a decreased reliance on PER from lactate (anaerobic glycolysis). Expression of genes responsible for ketone body metabolism was higher in combination exposed males. Findings demonstrate that myocardial ketone body metabolism is preserved and improves fuel flexibility in NRCM from diabetes- and HFD-exposed offspring, which suggests that ketones might serve a protective role in neonatal cardiomyopathy due to maternal diabetes.

Abstract: BackgroundBacterial vaginosis (BV) increases preterm delivery (PTD) risk, but treatment trials showed mixed results in preventing PTD. ObjectivesDetermine, using individual participant data (IPD), whether BV treatment during pregnancy reduced PTD or prolonged time-to-delivery. Data SourcesCochrane Systematic Review (2013), MEDLINE, EMBASE, journal searches, and searches (January 2013-September 2022) ("bacterial vaginosis AND pregnancy") of (i) ; (ii) Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; (iii) World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Portal; and (iv) Web of Science ("bacterial vaginosis"). Study Selection and Data ExtractionStudies randomising asymptomatic pregnant individuals with BV to antibiotics or control, measuring delivery gestation. Extraction was from original data files. Bias risk was assessed using the Cochrane tool. Analysis used "one-step" logistic and Cox random effect models, adjusting gestation at randomisation and PTD history; heterogeneity by I-2. Subgroup analysis tested interactions with treatment. In sensitivity analyses, studies not providing IPD were incorporated by "multiple random-donor hot-deck" imputation, using IPD studies as donors. ResultsThere were 121 references (96 studies) with 23 eligible trials (11,979 participants); 13 studies (6915 participants) provided IPD; 12 (6115) were incorporated. Results from 9 (4887 participants) not providing IPD were imputed. Odds ratios for PTD for metronidazole and clindamycin versus placebo were 1.00 (95% CI 0.84, 1.17), I-2 = 62%, and 0.59 (95% CI 0.42, 0.82), I-2 = 0 before; and 0.95 (95% CI 0.81, 1.11), I-2 = 59%, and 0.90 (95% CI: 0.72, 1.12), I-2 = 0, after imputation. Time-to-delivery did not differ from null with either treatment. Including imputed IPD, there was no evidence that either drug was more effective when administered earlier, or among those with a PTD history. ConclusionsClindamycin, but not metronidazole, was beneficial in studies providing IPD, but after imputing data from missing IPD studies, treatment of BV during pregnancy did not reduce PTD, nor prolong pregnancy, in any subgroup or when started earlier in gestation.
