The narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy I Zwicky 1 shows a unique and complex system of ionised gas in outflow, which consists of an ultra-fast wind and a two-component warm absorber. In the last two decades, XMM-Newton monitored the source multiple times enabling the study of the long-term variability of the various outflows. Plasma in photoionisation equilibrium with the ionising source responds and varies accordingly to any change of the ionising luminosity. However, detailed modelling of the past RGS data has shown no correlation between the plasma ionisation state and the ionising continuum, revealing a complex long-term variability of the multi-phase warm absorber. Here, we present a new observation of I Zwicky 1 by XMM-Newton taken in early 2020 characterised by a lower X-ray flux state. The soft X-ray spectrum from the RGS reveals the two components of the warm absorber with $\log \xi \sim -1.0$ and $\log \xi \sim 1.7$. Comparing our results with the previous observations, the ionisation state of the two absorbing gas components is continuously changing, following the same unpredictable behaviour. The new results strengthen the scenario in which the ionisation state of the warm absorber is driven by the density of the gas rather than the ionising luminosity. In particular, the presence of a radiation driven, inhomogeneous clumpy outflow may explain both the variability in ionisation throughout the years and the line-locked N V system observed in the UV band. Finally, the EPIC-pn spectrum reveals an ultra-fast wind with an outflow velocity of $\sim 0.26c$ and ionisation parameter of $\log \xi \sim 3.8$., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The accretion of matter onto black holes and neutron stars often leads to the launching of outflows that can greatly affect the environments surrounding the compact object. In supermassive black holes, these outflows can even be powerful enough to dictate the evolution of the entire host galaxy, and yet, to date, we do not understand how these so-called accretion disk winds are launched - whether by radiation pressure, magnetic forces, thermal irradiation, or a combination thereof. An important means of studying disk winds produced near the central compact object is through X-ray absorption line spectroscopy, which allows us to probe outflow properties along a single line of sight, but usually provides little information about the global 3D disk wind structure that is vital for understanding the launching mechanism and total wind energy budget. Here, we study Hercules X-1, a unique, nearly edge-on X-ray binary with a warped accretion disk precessing with a period of about 35 days. This disk precession results in changing sightlines towards the neutron star, through the ionized outflow. We perform time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy over the precession phase and detect a strong decrease in the wind column density by three orders of magnitude as our sightline progressively samples the wind at greater heights above the accretion disk. The wind becomes clumpier as it rises upwards and expands away from the neutron star. Modelling the warped disk shape, we create a 2D map of wind properties. S.; Turolla, R.; Vink, J.; Wu, K.; Xie, F.; Zane, S., We report on the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the closest and X-ray brightest Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN), the Circinus galaxy. We find the source to be significantly polarized in the 2–6 keV band. From previous studies, the X-ray spectrum is known to be dominated by reflection components, both neutral (torus) and ionized (ionization cones). Our analysis indicates that the polarization degree is 28 ± 7 per cent (at 68 per cent confidence level) for the neutral reflector, with a polarization angle of 18° ± 5°, roughly perpendicular to the radio jet. The polarization of the ionized reflection is unconstrained. A comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of the polarization expected from the torus shows that the neutral reflector is consistent with being an equatorial torus with a half-opening angle of 45°–55°. This is the first X-ray polarization detection in a Seyfert galaxy, demonstrating the power of X-ray polarimetry in probing the geometry of the circumnuclear regions of AGNs, and confirming the basic predictions of standard Unification Models. © 2022 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society., The Imaging X ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) is a joint US and Italian mission. The dense Galactic environment is a large reservoir of interstellar dust. Therefore, this region represents a perfect laboratory to study the properties of the cosmic dust grains. X-rays are the most direct way to detect the interaction of light with dust present in these dense environments. The interaction between the radiation and the interstellar matter imprints specific absorption features in the X-ray spectrum. We study them with the aim of defining the chemical composition, the crystallinity and structure of the dust grains which populate the inner regions of the Galaxy. We investigate the magnesium and the silicon K-edges detected in the Chandra/HETG spectra of eight bright X-ray binaries, distributed in the neighbourhood of the Galactic centre. We model the two spectral features using accurate extinction cross sections of silicates, that we have measured at the synchrotron facility Soleil, France. Near the Galactic centre magnesium and silicon show abundances similar to the solar ones and they are highly depleted from the gas phase ($\delta_{\rm{Mg}}>0.90$ and $\delta_{\rm{Si}}>0.96$). We find that amorphous olivine with a composition of $\rm MgFeSiO_{4}$ is the most representative compound along all lines of sight according to our fits. The contribution of Mg-rich silicates and quartz is low (less than $10\%$). On average we observe a percentage of crystalline dust equal to $11\%$. For the extragalactic source LMC X-1, we find a preference for forsterite, a magnesium-rich olivine. Along this line of sight we also observe an underabundance of silicon $A_{\rm Si}/A_{\rm LMC} = 0.5\pm0.2$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, recommended for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Studying absorption and scattering of X-ray radiation by interstellar dust grains allows us to access the physical and chemical properties of cosmic grains even in the densest regions of the Galaxy. We aim at characterising the dust silicate population which presents clear absorption features in the energy band covered by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Through these absorption features, in principle, it is possible to infer the size distribution, composition, and structure of silicate in the interstellar medium. In particular, in this work, we investigate the magnesium and silicon K-edges. By using newly acquired synchrotron measurements, we build X-ray extinction models for fifteen dust candidates. These models, adapted for astrophysical analysis, and implemented in the Spex spectral fitting program, are used to reproduce the dust absorption features observed in the spectrum of the bright low mass X-ray binary GX 3+1 which is used as a background source. With the simultaneous analysis of the two edges we test two different size distributions of dust: one corresponding to the standard Mathis-Rumpl-Nordsieck model and one considering larger grains ($n(a) \propto a_i^{-3.5}$ with $0.005, Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publications in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The composition and properties of interstellar silicate dust are not well understood. In X-rays, interstellar dust can be studied in detail by making use of the fine structure features in the Si K-edge. The features in the Si K-edge offer a range of possibilities to study silicon-bearing dust, such as investigating the crystallinity, abundance, and the chemical composition along a given line of sight. We present newly acquired laboratory measurements of the silicon K-edge of several silicate-compounds that complement our measurements from our earlier pilot study. The resulting dust extinction profiles serve as templates for the interstellar extinction that we observe. The extinction profiles were used to model the interstellar dust in the dense environments of the Galaxy. The laboratory measurements, taken at the Soleil synchrotron facility in Paris, were adapted for astrophysical data analysis and implemented in the SPEX spectral fitting program. The models were used to fit the spectra of nine low-mass X-ray binaries located in the Galactic center neighborhood in order to determine the dust properties along those lines of sight. Most lines of sight can be fit well by amorphous olivine. We also established upper limits on the amount of crystalline material that the modeling allows. We obtained values of the total silicon abundance, silicon dust abundance, and depletion along each of the sightlines. We find a possible gradient of $0.06\pm0.02$ dex/kpc for the total silicon abundance versus the Galactocentric distance. High ionisation lines in the soft X-ray band are generally associated to either interstellar hot gas along the line of sight or to photoionised gas intrinsic to the source. In the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1820-30, the nature of these lines is not well understood. We characterised the ionised gas present along the line of sight towards the source producing the X-ray absorption lines of Mg XI, Ne IX, Fe XVII, O VII, and O VIII. We analysed all the observations available for this source in the XMM-Newton and Chandra archives, taken with the RGS, HETG, and LETG spectrometers. The high-resolution grating spectra have been accurately examined through a standard X-ray analysis based on the $C$-statistic and through the Bayesian parameter inference. We tested two physical models which describe a plasma in either collisional ionisation or photoionisation equilibrium. We adopted the Bayesian model comparison to statistically compare the different combinations of the models used for the analysis.} We found that the lines are consistent with hot gas in the interstellar medium rather than being associated with the intrinsic gas of the X-ray binary. Our best-fit model reveals the presence of a collisionally ionised plasma with a temperature of $T=(1.98\pm0.05)\times10^6 $ K. The photoionisation model fails to fit the Fe XVII line (which is detected with a significance of $6.5\sigma$) due to the low column density predicted by the model. Moreover, the low inclination of the binary system is likely the reason for the non-detection of ionised gas intrinsic to the source.}, Comment: 13 pages, 7 Figure, Accepted for publication in A&A

The chemical and physical properties of interstellar dust in the densest regions of the Galaxy are still not well understood. X-rays provide a powerful probe since they can penetrate gas and dust over a wide range of column densities (up to $10^{24}\ \rm{cm}^{-2}$). The interaction (scattering and absorption) with the medium imprints spectral signatures that reflect the individual atoms which constitute the gas, molecule, or solid. In this work we investigate the ability of high resolution X-ray spectroscopy to probe the properties of cosmic grains containing iron. Although iron is heavily depleted into interstellar dust, the nature of the Fe-bearing grains is still largely uncertain. In our analysis we use iron K-edge synchrotron data of minerals likely present in the ISM dust taken at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. We explore the prospects of determining the chemical composition and the size of astrophysical dust in the Galactic centre and in molecular clouds with future X-ray missions. The energy resolution and the effective area of the present X-ray telescopes are not sufficient to detect and study the Fe K-edge, even for bright X-ray sources. From the analysis of the extinction cross sections of our dust models implemented in the spectral fitting program SPEX, the Fe K-edge is promising for investigating both the chemistry and the size distribution of the interstellar dust. We find that the chemical composition regulates the X-ray absorption fine structures in the post edge region, whereas the scattering feature in the pre-edge is sensitive to the mean grain size. Finally, we note that the Fe K-edge is insensitive to other dust properties, such as the porosity and the geometry of the dust., 11 pages, 10 figures. We present the rest-frame light curves in the optical and X-ray bands of an unbiased and complete sample of Swift long Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), namely the BAT6 sample. The unbiased BAT6 sample (consisting of 58 events) has the highest level of completeness in redshift ($\sim$ 95%), allowing us to compute the rest-frame X-ray and optical light curves for 55 and 47 objects, respectively. We compute the X-ray and optical luminosities accounting for any possible source of absorption (Galactic and intrinsic) that could affect the observed fluxes in these two bands. We compare the behaviour observed in the X-ray and in the optical bands to assess the relative contribution of the emission during the prompt and afterglow phases. We unarguably demonstrate that the GRBs rest-frame optical luminosity distribution is not bimodal, being rather clustered around the mean value Log(L$_{R}$) = 29.9 $\pm$ 0.8 when estimated at a rest frame time of 12 hr. This is in contrast with what found in previous works and confirms that the GRB population has an intrinsic unimodal luminosity distribution. For more than 70% of the events the rest-frame light curves in the X-ray and optical bands have a different evolution, indicating distinct emitting regions and/or mechanisms. The X-ray light curves normalised to the GRB isotropic energy (E$_{\rm iso}$), provide evidence for X-ray emission still powered by the prompt emission until late times ($\sim$ hours after the burst event). On the other hand, the same test performed for the E$_{\rm iso}$-normalised optical light curves shows that the optical emission is a better proxy of the afterglow emission from early to late times., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables
