1. Multiband effects on the upper critical field angular dependence of 122-family iron pnictide superconductors

Abstract

Abstract Detailed measurements of the in-plane resistivity were performed in a high-quality Ba( $$\hbox {Fe}_{1-x}\hbox {Co}_{{x}}$$ Fe 1 - x Co x ) $$_2\hbox {As}_2$$ 2 As 2 ( $$x=0.065$$ x = 0.065 ) single crystal, in magnetic fields up to 9 T and with different orientations $$\theta$$ θ relative to the crystal c axis. A significant $$\rho (T)_{H,\theta }$$ ρ ( T ) H , θ rounding is observed just above the superconducting critical temperature $$T_c$$ T c due to Cooper pairs created by superconducting fluctuations. These data are analyzed in terms of a generalization of the Aslamazov-Larkin approach, that extends its applicability to high reduced-temperatures and magnetic fields. This method allows us to carry out a criterion-independent determination of the angular dependence of the upper critical field, $$H_{c2}(\theta )$$ H c 2 ( θ ) . In spite of the relatively small anisotropy of this compound, it is found that $$H_{c2}(\theta )$$ H c 2 ( θ ) presents a significant deviation from the single-band 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (3D-aGL) approach, particularly for large $$\theta$$ θ (typically above $$\sim 60^o$$ ∼ 60 o ). These results are interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of these materials, in contrast with other proposals for similar $$H_{c2}(\theta )$$ H c 2 ( θ ) anomalies. Our results are also consistent with an effective anisotropy factor almost temperature independent near $$T_c$$ T c , a result that differs from the ones obtained by using a single-band model.

Abstract

A measurement of the cosmic ray positron fraction e+ / (e+ + e-) in the energy range of 1-30 GeV is presented. The measurement is based on data taken by the AMS-01 experiment during its 10 day Space Shuttle flight in June 1998. 3. Spatiotemporal Evolution of West Africa's Urban Landscape Characteristics Applying Harmonized DMSP-OLS and NPP-VIIRS Nighttime Light (NTL) Data.

Abstract

Investigating urban expansion patterns aids in the management of urbanization and in ameliorating the socioeconomic and environmental issues associated with economic transformation and sustainable development. Applying Harmonized Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-Operational Line-scan System (DMSP-OLS) and the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership-Visible Infrared Imagery Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) Nighttime Light (NTL) data, this paper investigated the characteristics of urban landscape in West Africa. Using the harmonized NTL data, spatial comparison and empirical threshold methods were employed to detect urban changes from 1993 to 2018. We examined the rate of urban change and calculated the direction of the urban expansion of West Africa using the center-of-gravity method for urban areas. In addition, we used the landscape expansion index method to assess the processes and stages of urban growth in West Africa. The accuracy of urban area extraction based on NTL data were R 2 = 0.8314 in 2000, R 2 = 0.8809 in 2006, R 2 = 0.9051 in 2012 for the DMSP-OLS and the simulated NPP-VIIRS was R 2 = 0.8426 in 2018, by using Google Earth images as validation. The results indicated that there was a high rate and acceleration of urban landscapes in West Africa, with rates of 0.016 0, 0.017 3, 0.018 9, and 0.068 6, and accelerations of 0.31, 0.42, 0.54, and 0.90 for the periods of 1998-2003, 2003-2008, 2008-2013, and 2013-2018, respectively. The expansion direction of urban agglomeration in West Africa during 1993-2018 was mainly from the coast to inland. However, cities located in the Sahel Region of Africa and in the middle zone expanded from north to south. Finally, the results showed that the urban landscape of West Africa was mainly in a scattered and disordered 'diffusion' process, whereas only a few cities located in coastal areas experiencing the process of 'coalescence' according to urban growth phase theory. Abstract

2',5'-Oligoadenylate synthetase (2',5'-OAS) is a double-stranded RNA-dependent nucleotidyl-transferase induced by interferon (IFN). Several 2',5'-OAS cDNA have been cloned from human, pig, rat, mouse, and chicken. A P-loop motif followed by an Asp-containing sequence (referred to as D-box) and a region with a high content of Lys and Arg (KR-rich region) are well conserved in 2',5'-OAS. The sequence 196DFLKQR201 of 40-kDa human 2',5'-OAS, to which 8-azido-ATP binds (N. Kon and R.J. Suhadolnik, J. Biol. Chem. 271, 19983-19990, 1996), is included in the KR-rich region. We introduced several site-directed mutations into these active motifs of 42-kDa murine 2',5'-OAS. Each mutant enzyme studied bound to poly(I):poly(C) to the same extent as wild-type enzyme. Both K67R, a P-loop mutant, and K200R, a KR-rich region mutant, exhibited a reduced but considerable rate of enzymatic activities. The activity of the double mutant K67R/K200R was about 10% of the wild type. On the other hand, the activities of both K67M and K200M were not more than 2% of the wild-type enzyme, and no activity was detected in another P-loop mutant, G62A/G63A. The binding of Mg2+ to a D-box mutant D76N/D78N was markedly reduced, and only a very low level of enzymatic activity was detected in this mutant. These results demonstrate that the P-loop, the D-box that binds Mg2+, and the KR-rich region are important for the enzymatic activities of 2',5'-OAS.
