Abstract

The 9.2 keV nuclear transition in 227Th was studied in the β−-decay of 227Ac by means of the internal conversion electron spectroscopy to clarify the spin-parity assignment of the ground state and the two lowest excited states of 227Th. The transition multipolarity was proved to be of mixed character M1 + E2 and the spectroscopic admixture parameter δ2(E2/M1)=0.695±0.248 (|δ(E2/M1)|=0.834±0.149) was determined. Nonzero value of δ(E2/M1) questioned the present theoretical interpretation of low-lying levels of 227Th. Calculations performed prefer the 1/2+, 3/2+, and 3/2+ sequence instead of the adopted 1/2+, 5/2+ and 3/2+ one for the 0.0, 9.2, and 24.3 keV levels, respectively.

Abstract

Introduction 44Sc is of great interest as a positron emission tomography (PET) radionuclide due to its suitable nuclear characteristics: Eβ+max = 1.47MeV, branching ratio 94.3% and convenient half-life of 3.97 h. Here, 44Sc was produced via the widely used reaction 44Ca (p,n)44Sc using natural calcium as a target. Methods The irradiation was performed at TRIUMF using the 13 MeV cyclotron. The separation consisted of a combination of DGA branched resin and Dowex 50Wx8 (200–400 mesh). The distribution coefficients of Sc3+ on Dowex 50Wx8 (NH4+ form, 200–400 mesh) with ammonium α-hydroxyisobutyrate (pH = 4.8) medium were determined in this study. Results and conclusion The tested scheme allows both a reliable separation of 44Sc from the target material as well as from the other competitive metals and a final fraction with high specific activity. The achieved radiochemical yield was 95 ± 3%.

Abstract

Targeted Auger Therapy represents great potential for the therapy of diseases which require a high degree of selectivity on the cellular level (e.g. for therapy of metastatic cancers). Due to their high Linear Energy Transfer (LET), Auger emitters, combined with selective biological systems which enable delivery of radionuclides close to the DNA of the targeting cell, can be extremely selective and powerful treatment tools. There are two main aspects associated with the development of efficient radiopharmaceuticals based on Auger Emitters: a) the availability of suitable Auger-emitting radionuclides for therapy and b) the design of targeting vectors which can deliver Auger emitters into/close to the nucleus. In the present review, we address the first aspect by defining important parameters for the selection of radionuclides for application to Targeted Auger Therapy and form a categorized list of the most promising radionuclides, their possible production routes, and their use in the synthesis of radiopharmaceuticals.

Abstract

An anion-exchange resin (Dowex 1×8) and a cation-exchange resin (Dowex 50W×8) were used for the determination of the distribution coefficients (Kd) for the following elements: Sr, Cd, Ba, Ra, Sc, Y, Pm, Lu, Ac, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, As, Sb, and Se in acetic acid media. Concentration of acetic acid was expanded down to 0.01 M and the distribution coefficients on the ion-exchange resins for the elements with valences from II to VI were determined. Furthermore, the Kd values for a mixtures of acetic acid and ammonium acetate were obtained. Accumulated data is important for more efficient separations and purifications of these elements in the future.

Abstract

One of the key components of radiopharmaceuticals for targeting imaging and therapy is a stable bifunctional chelating system to attach radionuclides to selective delivery systems. After-effects of radioactive decay can cause the release of a radioactive isotope from its chelation agent. Perturbed angular correlation (PAC) of γ-rays has become a unique technique to study the behavior of complexes formed between a chelating agent and radionuclide in vivo (in real time) over a relevant range of concentrations (10-12 M). In the present work, four radionuclides, 111In, 111mCd, and 152, 154Eu, were investigated with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) at different pH values to determine the stability constants of the complexes as well as the effects of post-decay processes, which play a major role in determining the suitability of these complexes for application as radiopharmaceuticals (e.g., in vivo generators). The study provides a convenient parameter for the characterization of radionuclide-chelator systems using the PAC method. PAC is proven to be a suitable tool to study novel chelators and radiopharmaceutical precursors attached to radiometals.

The distribution coefficients for 60 elements on the anion-exchange resin Dowex 1x8 in ammonium acetate medium (0.1–5.0 M) are determined. The values of Kd are presented as a periodic table of the elements. A range of possibilities for separating the elements of this system is proposed.

Abstract

A method for the production of 111In from an antimony target irradiated with 600 MeV protons has been developed. Here, a three-stage scheme of indium purification using ion-exchange chromatography is performed. The radiochemical yield is 85%, with a decontamination factor of the target material of no less than 109. The 111In preparation produced by the present method was used in studies of perturbed angular correlations. Also, a procedure for the production and separation of 117mSn/119mTe was developed, which is of particular interest for further studies on designing a generator to produce 119Sb.

The 9.2 and 24.3 keV nuclear transitions in $$^{\mathrm {227}}$$ Th were studied in the $$\upbeta ^{-}$$ decay of $$^{\mathrm {227}}$$ Ac employing the internal conversion electron spectroscopy. Values of $$(9244.6 \pm 0.8)$$ and $$(24343.1 \pm 1.1)$$ eV were determined for their energies. The 24.3 keV transition was found to be of the mixed (M1 $$+$$ E2) multipolarity with the spectroscopic admixture parameter $$\delta ^{\mathrm {2}}$$ $$(E2/M1)$$ = $$(0.0116 \pm 0.0004)$$ . Energies of $$(24342.9 \pm 1.2)$$ , $$(28613.3 \pm 1.7)$$ , and $$(37860.2 \pm 2.0)$$ eV were obtained respectively for the 24.3, 28.6, and 37.8 keV transitions in $$^{\mathrm {227}}$$ Th by means of the gamma-ray spectroscopy. Natural atomic-level widths of $$(14.1 \pm 0.5)$$ , $$(11.4 \pm 0.5)$$ , $$(6.9 \pm 0.4)$$ , $$(11.4 \pm 1.4)$$ , $$(8.6\pm 1.2)$$ , and $$(6.0 \pm 0.7)$$ eV for the M $$_{\mathrm {1}}$$ -, M $$_{\mathrm {2}}$$ -, M $$_{\mathrm {3}}$$ -, N $$_{\mathrm {1}}$$ -, N $$_{\mathrm {2}}$$ -, and N $$_{\mathrm {3}}$$ -subshells of thorium, respectively, were derived from conversion electron lines. The cross checking of the energy values of the 9.2, 15.1, and 24.3 keV nuclear transitions obtained by the ICES method is also given.

Abstract

Detection of antineutrino by the reaction of the inverse β-decay can be used for an independent monitoring of a nuclear reactor power. DANSS detector is located directly under a commercial WWER-1000 reactor and counts up to 5000 antineutrino per day, providing the accuracy of 1.5% in 2 days of the flux measurement. A powerful system of the passive and active shielding in combination with the fine spatial segmentation of the detector allows to diminish the contribution of the background processes to a level, negligible in comparison to the statistical error. The influence of the nuclear fuel composition on the neutrino flux can be accounted for based on the input from the NPP staff.

Abstract

The method of Time Differential γγ Perturbed Angle Correlations (TDPAC) was used to gain additional information on the position of different doping ions in the crystal structure of ferrites with spinel-like structure. For this purpose ferrites of the type MFe2O4 (M(II) = Co, Zn, Ni) were doped with the radionuclides 140La(140Ce), 172Lu(172Yb), 172Hf(172Lu(172Yb)) and 111In(111Cd), where the daughter nuclides are between brackets. In order to evaluate the effect of the synthetic procedure and to gain more information about the samples structure, ferrites modified by stable Yb3+- and Lu3+- ions were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, TEM. The homogeneity of all samples obtained was proved. The morphology studied by TEM shows a uniform distribution of grain sizes. TDPAC spectra were recorded below and above the Curie temperature. The changes of the TDPAC spectra with temperature were observed for all the ions implanted in the studied ferrites. It was found that the type of spinel structure (normal or inverse) does not influence the positions of 172Lu. The results suggest that the higher frequency shown by the nuclides corresponds to occupation of the octahedral position in the spinel structure.

Abstract

The SuperNEMO experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$), and study the Standard-Model double-beta decay process ($2\nu\beta\beta$). The SuperNEMO technology can measure the energy of each of the electrons produced in a double-beta ($\beta\beta$) decay, and can reconstruct the topology of their individual tracks. The study of the double-beta decay spectrum requires very accurate energy calibration to be carried out periodically. The SuperNEMO Demonstrator Module will be calibrated using 42 calibration sources, each consisting of a droplet of $^{207}$Bi within a frame assembly. The quality of these sources, which depends upon the entire $^{207}$Bi droplet being contained within the frame, is key for correctly calibrating SuperNEMO's energy response. In this paper, we present a novel method for precisely measuring the exact geometry of the deposition of $^{207}$Bi droplets within the frames, using Timepix pixel detectors. Abstract

This paper shows the results from the experiment that was done in JINR (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research) Dubna. Thorium foil between two aluminum foils was irradiated inside Phasotron with 100 MeV protons. As a result - gamma spectra was obtained from the Th and aluminum foils and residual nuclei cross-sections were evaluated from the reaction. Also there was made a simulation analysis of the beam distribution inside the Th foil and particle escape from the target. The experimental cross-sections were compared with calculations made in Monte-Carlo simulation (MCNP 6.1).

Abstract

The double-beta decay of 82Se to the 0 1 + excited state of 82Kr has been studied with the NEMO-3 detector using 0.93 kg of enriched 82Se measured for 4.75 y, corresponding to an exposure of 4.42 kg⋅y. A dedicated analysis to reconstruct the γ-rays has been performed to search for events in the 2e2γ channel. No evidence of a 2 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state has been observed and a limit of T 1 / 2 2 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 1.3 × 10 21 y at 90% CL has been set. Concerning the 0 ν β β decay to the 0 1 + state, a limit for this decay has been obtained with T 1 / 2 0 ν ( Se 82 , 0 g s + → 0 1 + ) > 2.3 × 10 22 y at 90% CL, independently from the 2 ν β β decay process. These results are obtained for the first time with a tracko-calo detector, reconstructing every particle in the final state.

Abstract

The KLL Auger electron spectra of Zr (Z = 40) and Nb (Z = 41) following respectively the electron capture (EC) decay of 90Nb and the de-excitation of the isomeric state of 91mNb were investigated in detail using a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer and radioactive sources prepared by surface sorption on a polycrystalline carbon substrate. For both elements, energies, relative intensities, and natural widths of all the nine well-resolved basic spectrum components were determined and compared with theoretical predictions and with results of previous measurement as well. Results of our ab initio multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations are discussed also in relation to the solid-state effect. Indications of an influence of the EC decay on the absolute energy of the KL2L3(1D2) transition (so-called atomic structure effect) in Zr were found. The effect of the retarded current-current interaction on the KL1L2(3P0) transition intensity was observed to be appreciable for the investigated elements in accordance with the prediction.

Abstract

The distribution coefficients of Hf(IV) and Lu(III) between Dowex 50W×8 cation exchanger or Dowex 1×8 anion exchanger and mixed HCl–H2C2O4 solutions and between Dowex 50W×8 cation exchanger or Dowex 1×8 anion exchanger and citric acid solutions were determined. A number of modifications of the 172Hf → 172Lu generator, based on reverse separation schemes, were examined. Systems consisting of an anion-exchange resin and a solution of appropriate organic acid were taken as a chemical basis of the generator. Irreversible sorption of 172Lu in generator columns was studied. Abstract

Utilization of (p, 4n) reaction channel for the production of medical radionuclides became very attractive with commercial availability of medium energy cyclotrons. Significantly higher yields and radionuclidic purity may open new perspectives for several novel and some of the radionuclides previously have not been considered due to production difficulties. In present work, we show the proof-of-principle study on the production of 86Y for Positron Emission Tomography imaging via radionuclide generator 86Zr → 86Y. Production suitability of 86Zr from natural yttrium target and radiochemical separation strategies were tested. In addition, two generator systems were proposed and evaluated.

Abstract

The first results of neutron-flux measurements at the LSM underground laboratory (Modane, France) using a new sensitive method are presented. Neutrons are detected by counting delayed γγ coincidences in the 127I(n, γ)128I reaction. It is shown that this approach makes it possible to measure thermal-neutron fluxes at a level of 10–6 neutron cm–2 s–1.

Abstract

The principal aspects of 44Ti application in time-differential γγ perturbed-angular-correlation method (TDPAC) for studying condensed matter are discussed. In the presented spectrometer modification, the efficiency of 44Ti application can be considerably increased by using thin NaI scintillator crystals. Promising techniques for 44Ti production and a method for synthesizing samples are described. Examples of TDPAC studies of titanium (rutile TiO2) and scandium (Sc2O3) oxide samples are shown.

Abstract

The distribution of some rare-earth elements (REEs) on Uranium and TEtraValent Actinides (UTEVA) resin was determined from different concentrations of inorganic (HCl, HNO3, HClO4, HPF6) and one organic acid – CCl3COOH. Low sorption of all REEs in the range of 1 M–5 M HNO3 was observed. In more concentrated HNO3, a rapid increase of the distribution coefficients (Kd) was noticed with an increase in the atomic number of the lanthanides as well as in Y and Sc. The system UTEVA–CCl3COOH showed a higher selectivity for Eu(III). Chromatographic elution profiles were checked in order to confirm the obtained Kd values.

Abstract

Using the internal conversion electron spectroscopy, the energy of the 15.1 keV $ M1+E2$ nuclear transition in 227Th populated in the $ \beta^{-}$ decay of 227Ac was determined to be $ 15098.6 \pm 1.0$ eV. This value is more accurate than the present accepted one by a factor of 200. The present uncertainty in the transition multipolarity was removed and it was found to be $ M1+E2$ with the admixture $ \vert\delta (E2/M1)\vert = 0.035 \pm 0.006$.

Abstract

The full data set of the NEMO-3 experiment has been used to measure the half-life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru, $T_{1/2} = \left[ 6.81 \pm 0.01\,\left(\mbox{stat}\right) ^{+0.38}_{-0.40}\,\left(\mbox{syst}\right) \right] \times10^{18}$ y. The two-electron energy sum, single electron energy spectra and distribution of the angle between the electrons are presented with an unprecedented statistics of $5\times10^5$ events and a signal-to-background ratio of ~80. Clear evidence for the Single State Dominance model is found for this nuclear transition. Limits on Majoron emitting neutrinoless double beta decay modes with spectral indices of n=2,3,7, as well as constraints on Lorentz invariance violation and on the bosonic neutrino contribution to the two-neutrino double beta decay mode are obtained., 11 pages, 9 figures

International audience; AbstractA radiochemical method for producing 82Se sources with an ultra-low level of contamination of natural radionuclides (40K, decay products of 232Th and 238U) has been developed based on cation-exchange chromatographic purification with reverse removal of impurities. It includes chromatographic separation (purification), reduction, conditioning (which includes decantation, centrifugation, washing, grinding, and drying), and 82Se foil production. The conditioning stage, during which highly dispersed elemental selenium is obtained by the reduction of purified selenious acid (H2SeO3) with sulfur dioxide (SO2) represents the crucial step in the preparation of radiopure 82Se samples. The natural selenium (600 g) was first produced in this procedure in order to refine the method. The technique developed was then used to produce 2.5 kg of radiopure enriched selenium (82Se). The produced 82Se samples were wrapped in polyethylene (12 μm thick) and radionuclides present in the sample were analyzed with the BiPo-3 detector. The radiopurity of the plastic materials (chromatographic column material and polypropylene chemical vessels), which were used at all stages, was determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The radiopurity of the 82Se foils was checked by measurements with the BiPo-3 spectrometer, which confirmed the high purity of the final product. The measured contamination level for 208Tl was 8–54 μBq/kg, and for 214Bi the detection limit of 600 μBq/kg has been reached.

Abstract

90Nb has an intermediate half-life of 14.6 h, a high positron branching of 53% and optimal β + emission energy of only E mean 0.35 MeV per decay. These favorable characteristics suggest it may be a potential candidate for application in immuno-PET. Our recent aim was to conduct studies on distribution coefficients for ZrIV and NbV in mixtures of HCl/H2O2 and HCl/oxalic acid for anion exchange resin (AG 1 × 8) and UTEVA resin to develop a “direct flow” separation strategy for 90Nb. The direct flow concept refers to a separation accomplished using a single eluent on multiple columns, effectively streamlining the separation process and increasing the time efficiency. Finally, we also demonstrated that this separation strategy is applicable to the production of the positron emitter 90Nb via the irradiation of molybdenum targets and isolation of 90Nb from the irradiated molybdenum target.

Abstract

Effects of the atomic environment on the L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , M 1 , M 2 , M 3 , and N 1 electron binding energies in samarium generated in the electron capture decay of radioactive 149 Eu were investigated by means of the internal conversion electron spectroscopy using the conversion electron spectrum of the 22.5 keV M1 + E2 nuclear transition in the daughter 149 Sm. In this investigation, four pairs of 149 Eu sources prepared by vacuum evaporation deposition and by ion implantation at 30 keV with the use of four different source backing materials, namely polycrystalline carbon, aluminium, gadolinium and platinum foils, were employed. The greatest average difference of (3.1 ± 0.1) eV in the L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , and M 1 subshell electron binding energies was observed between the 149 Eu sources prepared by ion implantation into the aluminium and platinum substrates. On the other hand, minimal differences in the electron binding energies were generally found between samarium generated in the evaporated layer and in the bulk for the individual investigated source backings with the exception of the gadolinium foil. A doublet structure of all investigated conversion electron lines with the average values of 8.1 ± 0.2 eV and 1.5 ± 0.1 for the separation energy and the intensity ratio of the low-energy to high-energy components, respectively, was observed for the 149 Eu sources prepared by ion implantation into the aluminium and carbon foils. This structure was presumably caused by the presence of both the trivalent and divalent Sm ions in the sources. No significant differences in natural widths of the L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , M 1 , M 2 , and M 3 samarium atomic levels among the investigated matrices were observed with the exception of the source prepared by the implantation of the 149 Eu ions into the platinum foil for which the determined values for all investigated subshells were apparently higher.

Abstract

Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

Abstract

The KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum of rubidium (Z=37) emitted in the electron capture decay of radioactive $^{83}$Sr in a polycrystalline platinum matrix and also $^{85}$Sr in polycrystalline platinum and carbon matrices as well as in an evaporated layer onto a carbon backing was experimentally studied in detail for the first time using a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Energies, relative intensities, and natural widths of fifteen basic spectrum components were determined and compared with both theoretical predictions and experimental data for krypton (Z=36). Relative spectrum line energies obtained from the semi-empirical calculations in intermediate coupling scheme were found to agree within 3$\sigma$ with the measured values while disagreement with experiment exceeding 3$\sigma$ was often observed for values obtained from our multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations. The absolute energy of the dominant spectrum component given by the semi-empirical approach agrees within 1$\sigma$ with the measured value. Shifts of + (0.2$\pm$0.2) and - (1.9$\pm$0.2) eV were measured for the dominant KLM spectrum components between the $^{85}$Sr sources prepared by vacuum evaporation on and implanted into the carbon foil, respectively, relative to $^{85}$Sr implanted into the platinum foil. A value of (713$\pm$2) eV was determined for the energy difference of the dominant components of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectra of rubidium and krypton generated in the polycrystalline platinum matrix. From the detailed analysis of the measured data and available theoretical results, the general conclusion can be drawn that the proper description of the KLM+KLN Auger electron spectrum for Z around 37 should still be based on intermediate coupling of angular momenta taking into account relativistic effects.

Abstract

International audience; The concentration of uranium and thorium in lead shields, which are used in underground particle physics research, should be monitored at sub-ppt levels. A combination of extraction chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can resolve this analytical task. However, a multi-step complicated separation procedure and clean room are required. Besides, the recovery yields for U and Th do not exceed 80% and 60%, correspondingly. We propose an alternative approach. U and Th were pre-concentrated and separated from Pb by countercurrent chromatography, which is a support-free liquid-liquid chromatography. A series of two-phase extraction systems were tested. Under the optimized conditions, U and Th were extracted using a system 1 M HNO3/0.01 M tetraphenylmethylenediphosphine dioxide in chloroform and then eluted by 0.01 M aqueous solution of etidronic acid and determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The separation is performed in one chromatographic run, takes less than 1 h, and provides the quantitative recovery of U and Th. The limits of detection are 3 and 1 ppt for U and Th, correspondingly. The concentrations of U and Th in Roman lead, which was raised from the sea bottom, were lower than the limits of detection. It sounds unbelievable, nevertheless, the antique lead manufactured by Romans can indeed serve as a high-purity low-background material for the construction of Pb shields. Apart from the analysis of antique lead, the proposed approach can be easily extended to the determination of ultra trace impurities in different materials due to a very wide variety of two-phase extraction systems, which can be used in countercurrent chromatography.

Abstract

DANSS is a highly segmented 1~m${}^3$ plastic scintillator detector. Its 2500 one meter long scintillator strips have a Gd-loaded reflective cover. The DANSS detector is placed under an industrial 3.1~$\mathrm{GW_{th}}$ reactor of the Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant 350~km NW from Moscow. The distance to the core is varied on-line from 10.7~m to 12.7~m. The reactor building provides about 50~m water-equivalent shielding against the cosmic background. DANSS detects almost 5000 $\widetilde\nu_e$ per day at the closest position with the cosmic background less than 3$\%$. The inverse beta decay process is used to detect $\widetilde\nu_e$. Sterile neutrinos are searched for assuming the $4\nu$ model (3 active and 1 sterile $\nu$). The exclusion area in the $\Delta m_{14}^2,\sin^22\theta_{14}$ plane is obtained using a ratio of positron energy spectra collected at different distances. Therefore results do not depend on the shape and normalization of the reactor $\widetilde\nu_e$ spectrum, as well as on the detector efficiency. Results are based on 966 thousand antineutrino events collected at 3 distances from the reactor core. Abstract

The L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , M 1 , M 2 , N 1 , N 3 , O 1 , O 2 , O 3 , and P 1 subshell electron binding energies (related to the Fermi level) in thulium generated by the electron capture decay of radioactive 169 Yb atoms implanted at 30 keV into polycrystalline platinum and aluminum foils and deposited by vacuum evaporation on surfaces of polycrystalline platinum, carbon, and aluminum foils were determined by the internal conversion electron spectroscopy. The greatest differences in the electron binding energies (4.5 ± 0.1 eV in the average without the P 1 shell and 7.0 ± 0.5 eV for the P 1 shell alone) were found between the matrices of the evaporated ytterbium layer on the aluminum foil and the bulk of the high purity polycrystalline platinum. The thulium electron binding energies in the matrices of the evaporated ytterbium layers on both the platinum and carbon foils and in the aluminum bulk were observed to be the same within the experimental uncertainties. The N 1 , N 3 , and O 2,3 electron binding energies most frequently presented in data compilations were found to be higher by about 3 eV. Natural widths of most of the K, L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , M 1 , M 2 , M 3 , N 1 , N 3 , and O 1 subshells in Tm in the investigated matrices were also determined. No significant differences in the natural widths were found among the matrices. The results obtained demonstrate that the physicochemical surrounding of the radioactive atoms should be well defined and understandable for any type of electron calibration source particularly in the case of the super stable calibration 83 Rb/ 83m Kr electron sources for the KATRIN neutrino mass experiment.

Abstract

Instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA) was applied to estimate trace contaminations in polyethylene (PE) used as a neutron shield for low background setup of the EDELWEISS Dark Matter search experiment. PE samples with masses of 1–10 grams each were irradiated at the WWR-SM nuclear reactor by neutron flux of 1 · 1014 n/(cm2 s) for 5–48 h. The radioactivity was measured by high-resolution γ-ray spectrometry. In PE samples of two types, more than 30 trace elements were determined at a concentration level of 10−5 to 10 –11 g/g.

Abstract

We report the results of a first experimental search for lepton number violation by four units in the neutrinoless quadruple-β decay of Nd150 using a total exposure of 0.19 kg yr recorded with the NEMO-3 detector at the Modane Underground Laboratory. We find no evidence of this decay and set lower limits on the half-life in the range T1/2>(1.1–3.2)×1021 yr at the 90% C.L., depending on the model used for the kinematic distributions of the emitted electrons.

Abstract

The BiPo-3 detector is a low radioactive detector dedicated to measuring ultra-low natural contaminations of 208Tl and 214Bi in thin materials, initially developed to measure the radiopurity of the double β decay source foils of the SuperNEMO experiment at the μBq/kg level. The BiPo-3 technique consists in installing the foil of interest between two thin ultra-radiopure scintillators coupled to low radioactive photomultipliers. The design and performances of the detector are presented. In this paper, the final results of the 208Tl and 214Bi activity measurements of the first enriched 82Se foils are reported for the first time, showing the capability of the detector to reach sensitivities in the range of some μBq/kg.

Abstract

The low-energy electron spectra emitted in the radioactive decay of the $^{83}$Rb and $^{83}$Sr isotopes were measured with a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer. Radioactive sources used were prepared by ion implantation of $^{83}$Sr into a high purity polycrystalline platinum foil at 30 keV and by vacuum-evaporation deposition of $^{83}$ Rb on the same type of foil. From the measured conversion electron spectra, the electron binding energies (referenced to the Fermi level) for the K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , M$_1$ , M$_2$, and M$_3$ shell/subshells of krypton in the platinum host were determined to be 14 316.4(12), 1 914.3(9), 1 720.3(9), 1 667.6(9), 281.5(9), 209.6(13), and 201.2(15) eV, respectively, and those for the evaporated layer were observed to be lower by 0.7(1) eV. For both host matrices, values of 2.3(2), 4.6(2), 1.7(2), 1.3(2), and 3.2(3) eV were obtained for the krypton K, L$_1$ , L$_2$ , L$_3$ , and M$_1$ natural atomic level widths, respectively. The absolute energies of 10 838.5(9) and 10 839.5(10) eV were measured for the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) Auger transition in krypton implanted in Pt and generated in the evaporated rubidium layer, respectively. A value of 601.0(8) eV was measured for the energy difference of the KL$_2$L$_3$ ($^{1}$D$_2$) transitions in Rb and Kr in the Pt host. Multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock calculations of the krypton KLL transition energies and intensities were also performed.

Abstract

Fast progressing immuno-PET asks to explore new radionuclides. One of the promising candidates is 90Nb. It has a half-life of 14.6 h that allows visualizing and quantifying biological processes with medium and slow kinetics, such as tumor accumulation of antibodies and antibodies fragments or drug delivery systems and nanoparticles. 90Nb exhibits a positron branching of 53% and an average kinetic energy of emitted positrons of E mean =0.35 MeV. Currently, radionuclide production routes and Nb V labeling techniques are explored to turn this radionuclide into a useful imaging probe. However, efficient separation of 90Nb from irradiated targets remains in challenge. Ion exchange based separation of 90Nb from zirconium targets was investigated in systems AG 1 × 8 – HCl/H2O2 and UTEVA-HCl. 95Nb (t 1/2 = 35.0 d), 95Zr (t 1/2 = 64.0 d) and 92m Nb (t 1/2 = 10.15 d) were chosen for studies on distribution coefficients. Separation after AG 1 × 8 anion exchange yields 99% of 90/95Nb. Subsequent use of a solid-phase extraction step on UTEVA resin further decontaminates 90/95Nb from traces of zirconium with yields 95% of 90/95Nb. A semi-automated separation takes one hour to obtain an overall recovery of 90/95Nb of 90%. The amount of Zr was reduced by factor of 108. The selected separation provides rapid preparation (90Nb appropriate for the synthesis of 90Nb-radiopharmaceuticals, relevant for purposes of immuno-PET. Applying the radioniobium obtained, 90/95Nb-labeling of a monoclonal antibody (rituximab) modified with desferrioxamine achieved labeling yields of >90% after 1 h incubation at room temperature.

Abstract

Summary A technique of selenium purification from 232Th, 238U, 226,228Ra, 227Ac and 40K was developed. This technique is simple to perform and employs a minimum number of highly pure reagents (bidistilled water, nitric acid). Operations carried out during purification (elution, evaporation) practically exclude losses of the target product (chemical yields of Se > 99%). A test purification of 100 g of selenium was carried out using this technique. The efficiency of this technique was confirmed by low background gamma spectrometry of the purified selenium sample. Distribution coefficients of Th, U, Ra and Ac on DOWEX 50W-×8 cation-exchange resin at different concentrations of selenium and nitric acid were experimentally determinated. Instrumental neutron activation analysis of bidistilled water, deionized water and nitric acid was performed.

Abstract

The KLM + KLN Auger electron spectrum of Cu (Z = 29) emitted in the electron capture decay of radioactive 65 Zn in a solid matrix was investigated for the first time using a combined electrostatic electron spectrometer adjusted to the 7 eV instrumental resolution. Energies and relative intensities of nine resolved spectrum components were determined and compared with theoretical expectations. An agreement within 3 σ was found between the semi-empirical predictions for the KLM transition energies by Larkins and the experimental data with the exception of the weak (KL 2 M 4,5 + KL 2 N 1 ) and (KL 3 M 4,5 + KL 3 N 1 ) lines where the differences reached 5 σ . From a comparison of the measured relative KLM transition intensities with available theoretical results a conclusion was derived that calculations of the KLM transition rates at Z = 29 should be based on intermediate coupling of angular momenta and take into account relativistic effects.

Procedures were developed for isolation and separation of radionuclides from a thorium target irradiated with 300-MeV protons. A large set of radionuclides, including those of heavy elements (225,226Ac, 223,224,225Ra, 230U, 230Pa), were obtained. A perspective scheme was suggested for separation of radionuclides from irradiated thorium.

Abstract

For the first time, the KLL Auger spectrum of La (Z = 57) following the electron capture decay of radioactive 139,141Ce in a solid source was measured. The all nine basic spectrum components were resolved and their energies and relative intensities were determined and compared with theoretical expectations. The absolute energy of 27 383.8 ± 2.2 eV derived for the dominant KL2L3(1D2) transition was found to be higher by 7.7 ± 2.2 eV (i.e. more than 3σ) than a value predicted by the widely used relativistic semi-empirical calculations by Larkins. The possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Despite of less accuracy of some measured data, the predicted strong influence of the relativistic effects on the KL1L2(3P0) transition intensity was nevertheless proved.

Abstract

The NEMO-3 experiment at the Modane Underground Laboratory has investigated the double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. Using $5.25$ yr of data recorded with a $6.99\,{\rm g}$ sample of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$, approximately $150$ double-$\beta$ decay candidate events have been selected with a signal-to-background ratio greater than $3$. The half-life for the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ has been measured to be $T^{2\nu}_{1/2}\,=\,[6.4\, ^{+0.7}_{-0.6}{\rm (stat.)} \, ^{+1.2}_{-0.9}{\rm (syst.)}] \times 10^{19}\,{\rm yr}$. A search for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay of $^{48}{\rm Ca}$ yields a null result and a corresponding lower limit on the half-life is found to be $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 2.0 \times 10^{22}\,{\rm yr}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, translating into an upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $ < 6.0 - 26$ ${\rm eV}$, with the range reflecting different nuclear matrix element calculations. Limits are also set on models involving Majoron emission and right-handed currents.

Abstract

Using internal conversion electron spectroscopy, improved energy 21 541.5±0.5 eV was determined for the 21.5keV M1 + E2 nuclear transition in 151Eu populated in the electron capture decay of 151Gd . This value was found to agree well with the present adopted value but is much more accurate. A value of 0.0305±0.0011 derived for the E2 admixture parameter $ \vert\delta(E2/M1)\vert$ from the measured conversion electron line intensities corresponds to the present adopted value. A possible effect of nuclear structure on the multipolarity of the 21.5 keV transition was also investigated.

Abstract

Successful utilization of medical isotopes in the radiolabeling reactions to a significant degree depends on the technically achievable specific activity. In this respect, the Szilard-Chalmers effect is considered in detail as a radiochemical tool to increase the specific activity of radionuclides produced by direct nuclear reactions. In the present study, a physico-chemical model is described utilizing the specific aspects of thermodynamically and kinetically stabilised metal-ligand complexes. The approach is applied as a proofof- principle study to increase the specific activity of 166Ho, produced via the (n, γ) nuclear reaction. As a target material, 165Ho-DOTA is used. In this case, 166Ho, the product nucleus of the neutron capture reaction, is obtained chemically as non-complexed cationic 166HoIII species in situ. Consequently, it can effectively and quantitatively be separated from the inactive 165Ho-DOTA target material by means of fast and simple chromatographic, column-based methods. We were able to verify the physico-chemical model by the experimentally obtained data. For the first time we quantitatively describe the interaction of the ligand-framework of the target material (e.g. the Ho-DOTA complex) with the radiation field of the nuclear reactor. The analysis of the experimental data allows to assume that radionuclides with half-lives of T1/2 < 64 h can be produced at a TRIGA II nuclear reactor via the Szilard-Chalmers effect with specific activities higher than in the case of direct irradiation of common target materials such as oxides.
