Abstract: We present the performances of two 92% enriched 130TeO2 crystals operated as thermal bolometers in view of a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. The crystals, 435 g each, show an energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV γ-line of 208Tl, of 6.5 and 4.3 keV FWHM. The only observable internal radioactive contamination arises from 238U (15 and 8 μBq/kg, respectively). Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay is a hypothetical rare nuclear transition ($T_{1/2}>10^{26}$ y). Its observation would provide an important insight about the nature of neutrinos (Dirac or Majorana particle) demonstrating that the lepton number is not conserved. This decay can be investigated with bolometers embedding the double beta decay isotope ($^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{100}$Mo, $^{116}$Cd, $^{130}$Te...), which perform as low temperature calorimeters (10 mK) detecting particle interactions via a small temperature rise read out by a dedicated thermometer. CROSS (Cryogenic Rare-event Observatory with Surface Sensitivity) aims at the development of bolometric detectors (Li$_{2}$MoO$_{4}$ and TeO$_{2}$) capable of discriminating surface $\alpha$ and $\beta$ interactions by exploiting superconducting properties of Al film deposited on the crystal surface. We report in this paper the results of tests on prototypes performed at CSNSM (Orsay, France) that showed the capability of a-few-$\mu$m-thick superconducting Al film deposited on crystal surface to discriminate surface $\alpha$ from bulk events, thus providing the detector with the required surface sensitivity capability. Abstract: The double-electron capture and the electron capture with positron emission in 168Yb have been investigated for the first time at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy) measuring 371 g of highly purified ytterbium oxide placed on the end-cap of a 465 cm3 ultra-low-background high purity Germanium detector (HPGe). No gamma associated to double beta processes in 168Yb have been observed after 2074 h of data taking. This has allowed setting the half-life limits on the level of lim ⁡ T 1 / 2 ∼ 10 14 – 10 18 yr at 90% C.L. Particularly, a lower half-life limit on a possible resonant neutrinoless double-electron capture in 168Yb to the ( 2 ) − 1403.7 keV excited state of 168Er is set as T 1 / 2 ≥ 1.9 × 10 18 yr at 90% C.L. Half-life limits T 1 / 2 2 ν ( 0 ν ) ≥ 4.5 ( 4.3 ) × 10 16 yr were set on the 2 ν ( 0 ν ) 2 β − decay of 176Yb to the 2 + 84.3 keV first excited level of 176Hf.

Abstract: This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to $g_{a\gamma} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, and masses up to $m_a\sim 0.25$ eV. BabyIAXO will offer additional opportunities for axion research in view of IAXO, like the development of precision x-ray detectors to identify particular spectral features in the solar axion spectrum, and the implementation of radiofrequency-cavity-based axion dark matter setups., Comment: 77 pages, 49 figures. Abstract: CUPID-Mo is a cryogenic detector array designed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) of 100Mo. It uses 20 scintillating 100Mo-enriched Li2MoO4 bolometers instrumented with Ge light detectors to perform active suppression of α backgrounds, drastically reducing the expected background in the 0νββ signal region. As a result, pileup events and small detector instabilities that mimic normal signals become non-negligible potential backgrounds. These types of events can in principle be eliminated based on their signal shapes, which are different from those of regular bolometric pulses. We show that a purely data-driven principal component analysis based approach is able to filter out these anomalous events, without the aid of detector response simulations.

Abstract: Double-beta processes in $^{184}$Os and $^{192}$Os were searched for over 15851 h at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. by using a 118 g ultra-pure osmium sample installed on the endcap of a 112 cm$^3$ ultra-low-background broad-energy germanium detector. New limits on double-electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in $^{184}$Os were set at the level of $\lim T_{1/2} \sim 10^{16}-10^{17}$ yr. In particular the $2\nu$2K and $2\nu$KL decays of $^{184}$Os to the ground state of $^{184}$W are restricted as $T_{1/2}\geq3.0\times 10^{16}$ yr and $T_{1/2}\geq2.0\times 10^{16}$ yr, respectively. A lower limit on the half-life for the double-beta decay of $^{192}$Os to the first excited level of $^{192}$Pt was set as $\lim T_{1/2}=2.0\times 10^{20}$ yr at 90\% C.L., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

Abstract: Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. Both axions and ALPs are very well motivated candidates for Dark Matter, and in addition, they would be copiously produced at the sun's core. A relevant effort during the last decade has been the CAST experiment at CERN, the most sensitive axion helioscope to-date. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a large-scale 4th generation helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for solar axions or ALPs with a signal to background ratio of about 5 orders of magnitude higher than CAST. Recently the IAXO collaboration has proposed and intermediate experimental stage, BabyIAXO, conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics, detectors and sun-tracking systems) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as pathfinder for IAXO but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with record and relevant physics reach in itself with potential for discovery. BabyIAXO was endorsed by the Physics Review committee of DESY last May 2019. Abstract: International audience; A new technology for the mass production of lithium molybdate (Li2MoO4) crystals needed for the realization of the cryogenic neutrinoless double-beta decay detectors is under development within the framework of the CLYMENE project. Crystals with 4 and 5 cm in diameter were grown in two different Czochralski configurations. The first configuration, based on inductive heating of a RF coil coupled with a platinum crucible, was used to grow crystals of 4 cm in diameter. Bolometric tests performed with two samples cut from a 230 g crystal have shown less performances of the large sample (158 g), which had a cleavage, as compared to the small non-cracked sample (13.5 g). Numerical 2 modeling was applied to investigate the temperature field in the furnace, the melt convection and thermo-elastic stresses in the crystal. Numerical results reveal 30% higher thermal stress at the bottom part of the ingot in the case of a concave shape of the crystal tail (experimental case) as compared to the case of a convex shaped tail. This could explain why the fracture started at the bottom part of the 230 g crystal boule, and highlights the importance of the crystal shape in the last stage of growth process. The furnace configuration used to grow 5 cm-diameter crystals was numerically optimized in order to reduce the thermal stress in the crystals. The first kg-mass Li2MoO4 ingot grown in the optimized configuration exhibit regular shape and good structural quality.

Abstract: We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2\nu}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18}$ years. This is the most accurate determination of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{100}$Mo to date. We also confirm, with the statistical significance of $>3\sigma$, that the single-state dominance model of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo is favored over the high-state dominance model., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The development of low-threshold detectors for the study of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering and for the search for light dark matter necessitates methods of low-energy calibration. We suggest this can be provided by the nuclear recoils resulting from the $\gamma$ emission following thermal neutron capture. In particular, several MeV-scale single-$\gamma$ transitions induce well-defined nuclear recoil peaks in the 100 eV range. Using the FIFRELIN code, complete schemes of $\gamma$-cascades for various isotopes can be predicted with high accuracy to determine the continuous background of nuclear recoils below the calibration peaks. We present a comprehensive experimental concept for the calibration of CaWO$_4$ and Ge cryogenic detectors at a research reactor. For CaWO$_4$ the simulations show that two nuclear recoil peaks at 112.5 eV and 160.3 eV should be visible above background simply in the spectrum of the cryogenic detector. Then we discuss how the additional tagging for the associated $\gamma$ increases the sensitivity of the method and extends its application to a wider energy range and to Ge cryogenic detectors., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: The CUPID-Mo experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo, evaluating the technology of cryogenic scintillating Li$_{2}^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors for CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID). CUPID-Mo detectors feature background suppression using a dual-readout scheme with Li$_{2}$MoO$_4$ crystals complemented by Ge bolometers for light detection. The detection of both heat and scintillation light signals allows the efficient discrimination of $\alpha$ from $\gamma$&$\beta$ events. In this proceedings, we discuss results from the first 2 months of data taking in spring 2019. In addition to an excellent bolometric performance of 6.7$\,$keV (FWHM) at 2615$\,$keV and an $\alpha$ separation of better than 99.9\% for all detectors, we report on bulk radiopurity for Th and U. Finally, we interpret the accumulated physics data in terms of a limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu}\,> 3\times10^{23}\,$yr for $^{100}$Mo and discuss the sensitivity of CUPID-Mo until the expected end of physics data taking in early 2020., Comment: Proceedings for TAUP 2019, submitted to IOP Journal of Physics: Conference Series

Abstract: Lithium magnesium molybdate (Li 2 Mg 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 ) crystals were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski method . Luminescence properties of the material (emission spectra, thermally stimulated luminescence, dependence of intensity on temperature, phosphorescence) have been studied under X-ray excitation in the temperature interval from 8 to 400 K, while at the same being operated as a scintillating bolometer at 20 mK for the first time. We demonstrated that Li 2 Mg 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 crystals are a potentially promising detector material to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo.

Abstract: This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ( $$\sim 1~\hbox {kg}$$ ∼ 1 kg ), high optical quality, radiopure $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2–0.4 kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the Q-value of the double-beta transition of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo (3034 keV) is 4–6 keV FWHM. The rejection of the $$\alpha $$ α -induced dominant background above 2.6 MeV is better than $$8\sigma $$ 8 σ . Less than $$10~\upmu \hbox {Bq/kg}$$ 10 μ Bq/kg activity of $$^{232}\hbox {Th}\, (^{228}\hbox {Th})$$ 232 Th ( 228 Th ) and $$^{226}\hbox {Ra}$$ 226 Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo -enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only $$10~\hbox {kg}\times \hbox {d}$$ 10 kg × d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $$T_{1/2}$$ T 1 / 2 = [6.90 ± 0.15(stat.) ± 0.37(syst.)] $$\times ~10^{18}~\hbox {years}$$ × 10 18 years . Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $$^{100}\hbox {Mo}$$ 100 Mo .

Abstract: The first direct search for the double electron capture ($2\epsilon$) and the electron capture with positron emission ($\epsilon\beta^+$) in $^{144}$Sm to the ground state and to the excited levels of $^{144}$Nd was realized by measuring - over 1899 h - a 342 g sample of highly purified samarium oxide (Sm$_2$O$_3$) with the ultra-low background HP-Ge $\gamma$ spectrometer GeCris (465 cm$^3$) at the STELLA facility of the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). No effect was observed and half-life limits were estimated at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.1-1.3) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, for the first time half-life limits of the double beta ($2\beta^-$) decay of $^{154}$Sm to several excited levels of $^{154}$Gd have been set; they are at the level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.06-8) \times 10^{20}$ yr (90% C.L.)., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures and 4 tables

Abstract: International audience; In this work we present how to fabricate large-area (15 cm 2 ), ultra-low threshold germanium bolometric photo-detectors and how to operate them to detect few (optical) photons. These detectors work at temperatures as low as few tens of mK and exploit the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect. They are operated as charge-to-heat transducers: the heat signal is linearly increased by simply changing a voltage bias applied to special metal electrodes, fabricated onto the germanium absorber, and read by a (NTD-Ge) thermal sensor. We fabricated a batch of five prototypes and ran them in different facilities with dilution refrigerators. We carefully studied how impinging spurious infrared radiation impacts the detector performances, by shining infrared photons via optical-fiber-guided LED signals, in a controlled manner, into the bolometers. We hence demonstrated how the radiation-tightness of the test environment tremendously enhances the detector performances, allowing to set electrode voltage bias up to 90 volts without any leakage current and signal-to-noise gain as large as a factor 12 (for visible photons). As consequence, for the first time we could operate large-area NTD-Ge-sensor-equipped NTL bolometric photo-detectors capable to reach sub 10-eV baseline noise (RMS). Such detectors open new frontiers for rare-event search experiments based on low light yield Ge-NTD equipped scintillating bolometers, such the CUPID neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment.

Abstract: International audience; Final results of studies of 116Cd 2β decay with CdWO4 crystal scintillators, enriched in 116Cd to 82%, are presented. After few years (2011 – 2017) of measurements with radiopure 116CdWO4 scintillators (mass of 1.162 kg) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (Italy), the half-life of 116Cd relatively to 2ν2β decay to the ground state of 116Sn was measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as T1/2=(2.63−0.12+0.11)×1019 yr. A new limit on 0ν2β decay of 116Cd was set as T1/2≥2.2×1023 yr at 90% C.L., which is the most stringent to-date restriction for this isotope. Limits for 0ν2β decay with majoron(s) emission, Lorentz-violating 2ν2β decay and 2β transitions to excited states of 116Sn were set at the level of T1/2≥1020−1022 yr.

Gamma quanta, expected in cascade after de-excitation of the 01+ (740.5 keV) excited level of 150Sm, have been observed in the coincidence spectra accumulated over 25947 h. The half-life value has been preliminary estimated as T1/2=[ 6.9−1.9+4.0(stat)±1.1(syst) ]×109y. Abstract: In this work, we want to highlight the potential of lithium as a target for spin-dependent dark matter search in cryogenic experiments, with a special focus on the low-mass region of the parameter space. We operated a prototype detector module based on a $$\hbox {Li}_2\hbox {MoO}_4$$ target crystal in an above-ground laboratory. Despite the high background environment, the detector sets a competitive limit on spin-dependent interactions of dark matter particles with protons and neutrons for masses between $$0.8~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ and $$1.5~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ .

Abstract: The first observation of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE ν NS), reported by the COHERENT Collaboration in 2017, paved the way for a new generation of experiments using reactor ν e and aiming at precisely measuring this process. In this context, the BASKET (Bolometers At Sub-KeV Energy Thresholds) R&D project investigates the use of cryogenic detectors for a reactor CE ν NS experiment. This article reports on the first test of a Mo-doped lithium tungstate scintillating bolometer ( ⊘ 18 × 7 mm, 8 g), performed in an aboveground laboratory at CSNSM, Orsay (France). The detector bolometric performance (energy and time response, particle identification capabilities) and radiopurity have been studied and confirm the promising potential of lithium tungstate-based bolometric detectors for the measurement of CE ν NS at reactors.

Abstract: International audience; Recent developments, results, and perspectives arising from double beta decay experiments at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN by using HPGe detectors and crystal scintillators and by exploiting various approaches and different isotopes are summarized. The measurements here presented have been performed in the experimental set-ups of the DAMA collaboration. These setups are optimized for low-background studies and operate deep underground at LNGS. The presented results are of significant value to the field, and the sensitivity achieved for some of the considered isotopes is one of the best available to date.

Abstract: The Majorana nature of neutrinos is one of the most important questions being pursued in physics today. This has given the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0 ν β β ) a high priority among proposed nuclear physics experiments. In this work, the objective was to evaluate several crystal compositions for possible use as a scintillating bolometer in 0 ν β β research. A crucial characteristic of the investigated crystals is that their compositions must include one of the few elements known to decay with double-beta emission. Therefore, we grew crystals containing molybdenum or selenium as a major constituent. Results are presented here for single-crystals of sodium molybdate and lithium indium diselenide. Scintillating bolometer data were measured at milli-Kelvin temperature and show good discrimination between alpha and beta/gamma emissions, which is crucial for background reduction. The lithium indium diselenide crystal was also used to measure the energy spectrum for the beta emission of indium decay, the first time a beta decay spectrum has been measured from self-emission in a scintillating bolometer.

Abstract: Bolometers are low temperature particle detectors with high energy resolution and detection efficiency. Some types of bolometric detectors are also able to perform an efficient particle identification. A wide variety of radiopure dielectric and diamagnetic materials makes the bolometric technique favorable for applications in astroparticle physics. The thermal signal boost in the presence of an electric field allows us to improve the signal-to-noise ratio reaching a baseline noise of around 20 eV. This device – coupled to an enriched 130TeO2 bolometer (435 g) – registered 160 eV Cherenkov light signal induced by 2615 keV 208Tl with a signal to noise ratio about 6:1. Since α particles emitted in decays of natural radionuclides do not produce the Cherenkov radiation, we were able to achieve an efficient α∕γ separation in the region of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te (Q-value is 2527 keV). Specifically, a rejection factor of 99.9% for α particles was obtained with a 98.3% acceptance of β∕γ events. The achieved α rejection efficiency is required to reduce the dominant α background in the follow-up of the CUORE experiment (CUPID), a ton-scale bolometric search with particle identification.

Abstract: A scintillating bolometer technology based on $^{100}$Mo-enriched lithium molybdate (Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$) crystals has been developed by LUMINEU to search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu 2\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo. The results of several low temperature tests at underground environments have proved the reproducibility of high detector performance and crystal radiopurity: in particular $\sim$5--6~keV FWHM energy resolution and at least 9$\sigma$ rejection of $\alpha$'s in the vicinity of the $0\nu 2\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo (3034 keV) and below 10~$\mu$Bq/kg bulk activity of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra. A modest acquired exposure (0.1~kg$\times$yr) is a limiting factor of the LUMINEU experiment sensitivity to the $0\nu 2\beta$ decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2}$ $\geq$ 0.7$\times$10$^{23}$ yr at 90\% C.L.), however the two-neutrino $2\beta$ decay has been measured with the best up to-date accuracy, $T_{1/2}$ = $\left[6.92 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.36(\mathrm{syst.})\right] \times 10^{18}$ yr. The applicability of the LUMINEU technology for a tonne-scale $0\nu 2\beta$ decay bolometric project CUPID is going to be demonstrated by the CUPID-0/Mo experiment with $\sim$5~kg of $^{100}$Mo embedded in forty 0.2~kg Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers. Abstract: International audience; We present a measurement of the cosmogenic activation in the germanium cryogenic detectors of the EDELWEISS III direct dark matter search experiment. The decay rates measured in detectors with different exposures to cosmic rays above ground are converted into production rates of different isotopes. The measured production rates in units of nuclei/kg/day are 82 $\pm$ 21 for $^3$H, 2.8 $\pm$ 0.6 for $^{49}$V, 4.6 $\pm$ 0.7 for $^{55}$Fe, and 106 $\pm$ 13 for $^{65}$Zn. These results are the most accurate for these isotopes. A lower limit on the production rate of $^{68}$Ge of 74 nuclei/kg/day is also presented. They are compared to model predictions present in literature and to estimates calculated with the ACTIVIA code.

Abstract: We present the performances of two 92% enriched $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals operated as thermal bolometers in view of a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. The crystals, 435 g each, show an energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV $\gamma$-line of $^{208}$Tl, of 6.5 and 4.3 keV FWHM. The only observable internal radioactive contamination arises from $^{238}$U (15 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively). The internal activity of the most problematic nuclei for neutrinoless double beta decay, $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th, are both evaluated as $

Abstract: We present the results of measurements demonstrating the efficiency of the EDELWEISS-III array of cryogenic germanium detectors for direct dark matter searches. The experimental setup and the FID (Fully Inter-Digitized) detector array is described, as well as the efficiency of the double measurement of heat and ionization signals in background rejection. For the whole set of 24 FID detectors used for coincidence studies, the baseline resolutions for the fiducial ionization energy are mainly below 0.7 keV$_{ee}$ (FHWM) whereas the baseline resolutions for heat energies are mainly below 1.5 keV$_{ee}$ (FWHM). The response to nuclear recoils as well as the very good discrimination capability of the FID design has been measured with an AmBe source. The surface $\beta$- and $\alpha$-decay rejection power of $R_{\rm surf} < 4 \times 10^{-5}$ per $\alpha$ at 90% C.L. has been determined with a $^{210}$Pb source, the rejection of bulk $\gamma$-ray events has been demonstrated using $\gamma$-calibrations with $^{133}$Ba sources leading to a value of $R_{\gamma{\rm -mis-fid}} < 2.5 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L.. The current levels of natural radioactivity measured in the detector array are shown as the rate of single $\gamma$ background. The fiducial volume fraction of the FID detectors has been measured to a weighted average value of $(74.6 \pm 0.4)\%$ using the cosmogenic activation of the $^{65}$Zn and $^{68,71}$Ge isotopes. The stability and uniformity of the detector response is also discussed. The achieved resolutions, thresholds and background levels of the upgraded EDELWEISS-III detectors in their setup are thus well suited to the direct search of WIMP dark matter over a large mass range.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we report on the Czochralski growth of Li2MoO4 crystals up to 230 g for heat-scintillation cryogenic bolometers likely to be used in astroparticle physics and neutron spectroscopy. Their transmission properties, radiopurity levels and detector behavior characterizations were carried out in order to validate the crystal growth process. The melting characteristics, the partition coefficients of a broad range of impurities, the thermal expansion (lattice parameters and dilatometry) and specific heat properties of the crystals were measured, over a broad temperature range for the last two, providing new data likely to be used in crystal growth process numerical simulations. We also investigated the crystal growth of Li4Mo5O17 and determined its melting behavior and specific heat. The physical properties directly relevant to heat-scintillation cryogenic bolometers of Li2MoO4 and Li4Mo5O17 are discussed in the context of the current materials developed for such applications.

Abstract: A large cylindrical cadmium molybdate crystal with natural isotopic abundance has been used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer. The measurement was performed above ground at milli-Kelvin temperature, with simultaneous readout of the heat and the scintillation light. The energy resolution as FWHM has achieved from 5 keV (at 238 keV) to 13 keV (at 2615 keV). We present the results of the α versus β / γ events discrimination. The low internal trace contamination of the CdMoO 4 crystal was evaluated as well. The detector performance with preliminary positive indications proves that cadmium molybdate crystal is a promising absorber for neutrinoless double beta decay scintillating bolometric experiments with 116 Cd and 100 Mo nuclides in the next-generation technique.

Abstract: International audience; The introduction of a small quantity of tungsten oxide (in the range 0.2–0.5 wt%) into the melt improves the growth of ZnMoO4 crystals. No significant difference in the kinetics of scintillation decay, scintillation efficiency, emission spectra, optical transmittance was observed for three ZnMoO4 crystal samples grown from the melt of stoichiometric composition, with excess of molybdenum and doped with tungsten. Using CaWO4 as reference, the absolute light yield of ZnMoO4 is found to be equal to 3550±5503550±550 ph/MeV at 77 K. For two ZnMoO4 samples 20 mm in diameter and 40 mm in length (grown from the melt of stoichiometric composition and doped with tungsten) it is confirmed that scintillation and bolometric response are similar at milli-Kelvin temperature.

Abstract: We report on a dark matter search for a Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) in the mass range $m_\chi \in [4, 30]\,\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ with the EDELWEISS-III experiment. A 2D profile likelihood analysis is performed on data from eight selected detectors with the lowest energy thresholds leading to a combined fiducial exposure of 496 kg-days. External backgrounds from $\gamma$- and $\beta$-radiation, recoils from $^{206}$Pb and neutrons as well as detector intrinsic backgrounds were modelled from data outside the region of interest and constrained in the analysis. The basic data selection and most of the background models are the same as those used in a previously published analysis based on Boosted Decision Trees (BDT). For the likelihood approach applied in the analysis presented here, a larger signal efficiency and a subtraction of the expected background lead to a higher sensitivity, especially for the lowest WIMP masses probed. No statistically significant signal was found and upper limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section can be set with a hypothesis test based on the profile likelihood test statistics. The 90% C.L. exclusion limit set for WIMPs with $m_\chi = 4\,\mathrm{GeV/}c^2$ is $1.6 \times 10^{-39}\,\mathrm{cm^2}$, which is an improvement of a factor of seven with respect to the BDT-based analysis. For WIMP masses above $15\,\mathrm{GeV/}c^2$ the exclusion limits found with both analyses are in good agreement., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables (updated to accepted version)

Abstract: A radiopure cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator, enriched in 106 Cd to 66%, with mass of 216 g (106CdWO4) was used in coincidence with four ultra-low background HPGe detectors contained in a single cryostat to search for double beta (2β) decay processes in 106 Cd. New improved half-life limits on the 2β processes in 106 Cd have been set on the level of 1020 — 1021 yr after 13085 h of data taking deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of INFN (Italy). In particular, the limit on the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission, Teβ+2 1/2≥ 1.1 × 1021 yr, has reached the region of theoretical predictions. The resonant neutrinoless double electron captures to the 2718, 2741 and 2748 keV excited states of 106 Pd are restricted on the level of T2e0v 1/2 ≥ (8.5 × 1020 - 1.4 × 1021) yr.

Abstract: The radioactive contamination of ZnWO4 crystal scintillators has been measured deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN in Italy with a total exposure 3197 kg x h. Monte Carlo simulation, time-amplitude and pulse-shape analyses of the data have been applied to estimate the radioactive contamination of the ZnWO4 samples. One of the ZnWO4 crystals has also been tested by ultra-low background gamma spectrometry. The radioactive contaminations of the ZnWO4 samples do not exceed 0.002 -- 0.8 mBq/kg (depending on the radionuclide), the total alpha activity is in the range: 0.2 - 2 mBq/kg. Particular radioactivity, beta active 65Zn and alpha active 180W, has been detected. The effect of the re-crystallization on the radiopurity of the ZnWO4 crystal has been studied. The radioactive contamination of samples of the ceramic details of the set-ups used in the crystals growth has been checked by low background gamma spectrometry. Abstract: A sample of 100MoO3 powder with molybdenum enriched in 100Mo to 99.5% and mass of 1199 g was measured for 18120 h in a low-background set-up with 4 HP Ge detectors ( ≃ 225 cm 3 volume each one) deep underground (3600 m w.e.) at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of the INFN (Italy). The two γ quanta of 540 keV and of 591 keV emitted in the deexcitation process after a 2 β 2 ν decay of 100Mo to the 0 1 + excited level of 100Ru ( E exc = 1131 keV ) are observed in the accumulated data both in coincidence and in the 1-dimensional sum spectrum. The measured half life is: T 1 / 2 = 6.9 − 0.8 + 1.0 ( stat. ) ± 0.7 ( syst. ) × 10 20 yr , well in agreement with positive results obtained in previous experiments. Moreover, the limit on charge non-conserving β decay of 100Mo is also set: τ CNC > 4.5 × 10 19 yr at 90% C.L.; it corresponds to the limit on CNC admixture in weak currents: ϵ ν 2 2.9 × 10 − 21 .

Abstract: A cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator enriched in 106 Cd was developed for an experiment to search for double beta processes in 106 Cd. With this aim samples of cadmium with natural isotopic composition and enriched in 106 Cd were purified by vacuum distillation. Cadmium tungstate compounds were synthesized from solutions. The absolute isotopic composition of the enriched cadmium was accurately determined as 66.4% by thermal ionisation mass-spectrometry. A 106 CdWO 4 crystal boule was grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The total irrecoverable loss of the enriched cadmium in all the stages of the crystal scintillator production does not exceed 2.3%. The produced 106 CdWO 4 crystal scintillator with mass of 216 g exhibits good optical and scintillation properties.

Abstract: Results are presented on our latest research, aimed at the development and study of oxide scintillation crystals (ZnWO4, ZnMoO4, PbWO4, PbMoO4, and MgWO4) with high scintillation yield and low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the improvement of these properties for conventional scintillators, as well as on new promising crystals based on metal tungstates and molybdates. The results are discussed in view of applying these materials in cryogenic experiments searching for dark matter and/or neutrinoless double beta decay. © 2006 IEEE.

46. Ancient Greek lead findings in Ukraine

Abstract: In June–August 2006 an expedition with the aim to look for archaeological lead with low levels of 210 Pb was organised by a Korean–Ukrainian collaboration on the shelf of the Black Sea, near the Crimean Peninsula. The first samples with ∼0.2 ton of total mass were found at a depth of 28 m among the relics of an ancient Greek ship. Their age has been dated to the first century BC. The element composition of the samples was measured by means of X-ray fluorescence and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analyses. The radiopurity of the lead was tested using low-level and ultra-low-level γ-spectrometry at a surface laboratory in Kyiv, at the Solotvina Underground Laboratory (Ukraine), and deep underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS, Italy). The samples have been assessed at the LNGS also by means of α-spectroscopy. For all investigated radionuclides, only upper limits could be obtained. Limits on activities of radionuclides in the lead after melting were set at the level of −1 ( 60 Co), −1 ( 137 Cs), −1 ( 226 Ra), −1 ( 228 Th), −1 ( 40 K), −1 ( 210 Po), and −1 ( 210 Pb). Any 210 Pb present in the lead after it was produced ca. 2000 years ago has decayed away. Assuming secular equilibrium in the 238 U chain in the lead, the activity of 210 Pb due to 238 U can be restricted to −1 before melting, and −1 after melting.

Abstract: Light output, α / β ratio, and pulse shape have been investigated at - 25 ∘ C with PbWO 4 crystal scintillators undoped, and doped by F, Eu, Mo, Gd and S. The fast 0.01– 0.06 μ s and middle 0.1– 0.5 μ s components of scintillation decay were observed for all the samples. Slow components of scintillation signal with decay times 1–3 and 13– 28 μ s with total intensity up to ≈ 50 % have been recognized for several samples doped by Molybdenum. We found some indications of a pulse-shape discrimination between α particles and γ quanta with PbWO 4 (Mo doped) crystal scintillators.

Abstract: International audience; The LUMINEU (Luminescent Underground Molybdenum Investigation for NEUtrino mass and nature) project envisages a high-sensitivity search for neutrinoless double beta (0 nu 2 beta) decay of Mo-100 with the help of scintillating bolometers based on zinc molybdate (ZnMoO4) crystals. One of the crucial points for the successful performance of this experiment is the development of a protocol for producing high quality large mass ZnMoO4 crystal scintillators with extremely high internal radiopurity. Here we report a significant progress in the development of large volume ZnMoO4 crystalline boules (with mass up to 1 kg) from deeply purified materials. We present and discuss the results achieved with two ZnMoO4 samples (with mass of about 0.3 kg each): one is a precursor of the LUMINEU project, while the other one was produced in the framework of LUMINEU with an improved purification / crystallization procedure. The two crystals were measured deep underground as scintillating bolometers in the EDELWEISS dilution refrigerator at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) protected by a rock overburden corresponding to 4800 m w.e. The results indicate that both tested crystals are highly radiopure. However, the advanced LUMINEU sample shows a clear improvement with respect to the precursor, exhibiting only a trace internal contamination related with Po-210 at the level of 1 mBq/kg, while the activity of Ra-226 and Th-228 is below 0.005 mBq/kg. This demonstrates that the LUMINEU purification and crystal-growth procedures are very efficient and leads to radiopurity levels which exceedingly satisfy not only the LUMINEU goals but also the requirements of a next-generation 0 nu 2 beta experiment.

Abstract: A radiopure cadmium tungstate crystal scintillator, enriched in 106Cd (106CdWO4), was used to search for double beta decay processes in 106Cd in coincidence with an ultra-low background set-up containing four high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors in a single cryostat. The experiment has been completed after 13085 h of data taking. New improved limits on most of the double beta processes in 106Cd have been set on the level of 1020−1021 yr. Tn particular, the half-life limit on the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission, T1/2 ≥ 1.8 × 1021 yr, reached the region of theoretical predictions.
