The volume includes eleven chapters. Peter Hamilton and Roger Hargreave's book The Beautiful and the Damned: The Creation of Identity in Nineteenth-Century Photography is a counterpart to the National Portrait Gallery's exhibition in London, England, having as its subject photography's early development and how the different types of photography illustrate a nineteenth-century interest in classification and ordering, particularly when it comes to identifying images of the beautiful and the damned.

Abstract

This article discusses various geometrical functions of curves, based on theories illustrated by Philip J. Davis's book on spirals. Davis considered different types of curves, such as Archimedes' spiral and logarithmic spirals, but his main focus was on the spiral of Theodorus. Several different definitions of spirals in the plane were given by different mathematicians. In general, a spiral is a curve in the plane around a center point that, with a proper choice of coordinates, can be placed at the origin. A solution to the difference equation, namely "Theodorus function" is characterized by elementary characterization method.
