This study aims to identify the effect of board diversity on environmental policy in Latin American companies. This research focuses on 11 industrial sectors in Brazil, Mexico, and Chile that took into consideration a broader extension of environmental policy, involving practices regarding resource use, emissions reduction, and innovation. Drawing on corporate governance (CG) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) relationships, a regression analysis was conducted with 1214 firm‐year observations from 181 companies. Our results indicate that the predominantly weak CG in Latin America might favour the use of manipulative environmental policy decisions. Board diversity does not have a relevant influence on CSR activities, as environmental issues are only taken into account so far as the cost of natural resources, while issues such as environmental innovation and reducing emission are not part of the agenda. In Brazil and Chile, independent directors have no significant effect on environmental policy decisions, while in Mexico, a less independent board grants managers greater discretion to establish an environmental policy, whereas in all three countries, board gender diversity has no significant effect. The theoretical insights drawn from this study reinforce that board composition, as an internal CG mechanism, is insufficient to overcome the institutional voids and give protagonist to sustainability issues in Latin America, reiterating the need for more robust CG mechanisms to coerce CSR. This paper seeks to examine the relationship between the environmentally responsible behaviours and the perception of Environmental Education of students and public servants of a Federal Public Institution of Education through an electronic questionnaire applied to students and workers of the institution. The data analysis was done by using descriptive statistics, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, t-tests for independent samples, variance analysis, and regression trees. Those results contribute to understand the behaviour considered as environmentally responsible of individuals from a Federal Public Institution of Education, before their perception regarding Environmental Education. Based on the results presented in this survey, one can devise strategies for teaching, research, outreaching, empowerment, and awareness of future technicians, graduates, and technologists as well as other stakeholders involved with environmental issues. Thus, this study contributes to the surveyed institution in the sense that, based on it, goals and strategies towards the empowerment in education and environmental management can be traced, highlighting themes that address waste management, sustainable biddings, labour life quality, raise of students’ awareness, empowerment of the civil servants, and rational use of resources. The study also contributes to identify what are the environmentally responsible behaviors in an organizational academic environment. MINERAL industries ,CAPITAL market ,LONG run (Economics) - Abstract
This paper analyzes the reaction of the capital market after the environmental accident of the mining company Samarco. Samarco is organized as a joint venture between the Brazilian company Vale and the Anglo-Australian company BHP Billiton. The technique of event study was used to calculate the systematic risk (beta) and to evaluate the variations in the return of the shares of companies of the mining sector of the Brazilian and Australian capital markets. Data for the study were obtained from the BM & FBOVESPA for Brazilian companies and the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) for Australian businesses, throughout the year 2015. The survey results show that in Brazil, just Vale company showed a decline beta coefficient. In the case of Australian companies there was a decline in systematic risk for companies BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and NCM. The disruption of the Samarco mining dam Fundão has entered into the role of global environmental disasters. However, the economic, environmental, and social impacts were quickly absorbed by the capital market, and did not affect the value of the shares of mining companies in the sector in Brazil and Australia in the long run. PHOTOVOLTAIC power systems , *ELECTRIC power distribution , *ELECTRIC industries , *TAX incentives , *NET present value - Abstract
Purpose: To explore financial alternatives to implement PV power generation projects based on the provisions of Normative Resolution n. 482/2012 of the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel). This regulation sets forth the general conditions to the access of microand minigeneration granted to the electric energy distribution systems through the energy product offset method. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: This paper discusses the need for regulatory changes, greater government participation in the granting of financial and tax incentives so that PV solar power technology in distributed generation can be financially viable for residential consumers. Key methodological aspects: Investment analysis in PV systems used the Net Present Value (NPV) valuation method. The research assessed two scenarios for Grid-Connected PV Systems (GCPVSs), with different solar power usage levels for a residential consumer. Summary of key results: The results point to a low financial viability in the implementation of distributed microgeneration projects, suggesting the need to remove the tax burden and reduce financing costs. Key considerations/conclusions: The study shows the need of flexibilization of the Brazilian regulatory model, with changes that enable the expansion of renewable energy offers, with positive economic outcomes for tariff affordability. Tariff benefits from distributed microgeneration can positively reflect on captive customers, provided that investment risks are reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Effect of Varieties of Institutional Systems on Dynamics of Explicitization.

- Abstract
We investigated the dynamic process of explicitization of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) through environmental disclosure and how this process unfolds in different varieties of institutional systems. We rely on the Varieties of Institutional Systems (VIS), a novel institutional comparative approach proposed by Fainshmidt et al. (2018), which encompasses the configurational context encapsulated by state, financial markets, human capital, social capital, and corporate governance institutions. We used a sample of 97 firms from four countries, Canada, Spain, Brazil and India, ranging from 2011 to 2018, summing up to 776 firm-year observations. We consider that the process of explicitization varies among VIS and is motivated by different institutional characteristics. We show that the explicitization process is weaker in Spain, standing for coordinated markets, while in Canada, which represents liberal markets, is significantly influenced by the extent of shareholder governance. In emerging countries under state-led configurations like India, the explicitization process is not significantly influenced by the institutional context, while Brazilian companies under family-led configurations are influenced by the capital market development and government integrity. 20. Exploring the Mirror versus Substitute Dichotomy in Social and Environmental Disclosure.

- Abstract
Much of the debate over how the institutional context can shape corporate social responsibility (CSR) is focused on the dichotomy between liberal and coordinated markets drawn from Varieties of Capitalism. CSR in liberal market economies (LMEs) is seen as a substitute for institutional voids and relies on market incentives, while in coordinated market economies (CMEs), such practices are seen as a mirror of their institutional strengths and rely on stakeholders' networks. Recently, this view has been criticized for its neglect of developing countries since their CSR practices may not fit properly into this LME-CME dichotomy. We add to this debate by comparing the social and environmental disclosure practices of 86 companies from eight different countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, South Africa, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. We show how institutional characteristics have different effects on social and environmental disclosure, depending on the context in which companies are operating. We show that social and environmental disclosure in LME countries is driven by market forces and is shareholder-oriented, while in CME countries, it is driven by regulatory provisions. Regarding developing countries, the inclusion of different institutional features may be required to better explain companies' social and environmental disclosure practices [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We intended to identify the influence of institutional pressures such as legal, regulatory and social charges in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS countries) on level of environmental information disclosure of local electricity companies. We used content analysis to analyze the annual and sustainability reports of 90 companies of BRICS countries from electricity sector and used ANOVA, t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Tukey's post-hoc test and regression tree to analyze the data according to the Institutional Theory. We concluded that companies with the highest level of disclosure are those that are part of sustainability indexes. This result highlights the mimetic isomorphism and the influence of cultural pressures. Companies of the sample that present the lowest level of disclosure are those based in Common Law or mixed legal system countries and they are not part of any sustainability indexes. Among the companies studied, Brazilian and Russian companies presented a higher level of environmental disclosure than Chinese and Indian ones. These findings highlights the importance of the role that institutions such as stock exchanges and their sustainability indexes play on influencing the disclosure of environmental information, having a bigger influence on disclosure than legal requirements and external verification of reports.
