Indoor air quality has become an important factor for sensitization and development of allergic diseases because of increased time spent in homes. We aimed to analyze the possible home-condition risk factors for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, atopic eczema, and severe disease in schoolchildren aged 5 through 8 years.The parents of 3360 school children in Pamplona, Spain in the 5-8-year-old age bracket answered questions about rhinitis and eczema symptoms from the protocol of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). The instrument contained additional questions about current home conditions related to mold and dust exposure and about conditions in the first year of life. Associations between the allergic diseases and early and current exposure were studied with chi(2) tests and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression.Exposure to certain home conditions related to molds and dust in the first year of life increased the risk of allergic disease, but having good isolating windows in the first year of life protected against allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and severe atopic eczema. Some current home conditions were also related to an increased risk of current allergic disease; severe atopic eczema was more common among children with single glazing over the bedroom window.Current and first-year-of-life home conditions related to dust and mold exposure should be controlled because they influence the prevalence of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and atopic eczema diseases. Moreover, having a double-glazed window currently and in the first year of life seems to protect against these diseases.

This study investigated risk factors for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection in a population of university students in Germany and Spain. In addition, factors associated with the occurrence of oral lesions were studied. Serum samples were collected from 596 Spanish students from the Navarra Public University in Pamplona and 174 German students from the University of Bielefeld aged 17-41 years and tested by a HSV-1 type-specific immunoassay using monoclonal antibody-selected gG1 as antigen. Information on clinical manifestations and risk factors were obtained by a standardized questionnaire. The rate of HSV-1 infection was 55.3 and 27.4% of these infected students reported having had oral lesions within the last 12 months. Prevalence of HSV-1 infection did not differ between study sites, and did not vary according to gender or age. Students with coitus experience were more likely to be infected with HSV-1 (Odds ratio (OR), 1.88; 95%CI: 1.31-2.69), while other lifestyle factors were not associated with HSV-1 infection. Risk factors for the occurrence of oral lesions included HSV-1 seropositivity (OR: 6.90; 95%CI: 3.84-12.37) and a higher level of perceived stress, as measured by the Cohen scale of perceived stress (OR: 1.79; 95%CI: 1.15-2.78). Drinking alcohol was found to be a protective factor (OR: 0.59; 95%CI: 0.37-0.93). There was no difference in the clinical pattern and course of infection between the young adults in Germany and Spain. We conclude, that lifestyle factors appear to play an important role in the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of HSV-1.

Dimerization of calix[4]arene ureidopeptides is demonstrated for the first time. Two calix[4]arenes tetrasubstituted in the upper rim with -NHCONH(L)LeuNHC(8)H(17) (1) and -NHCONH(L)Leu(D)Leu-OMe (2) were prepared and studied by NMR, circular dicroism, and gel permeation chromatography. Compound 2 self-assembles through urea-urea hydrogen bonds, as well as by an additional set of hydrogen bonds provided by the peptide side chains, with participation of the ester carbonyls. The absence of such group in 1 causes the monomer structure to be favored in this case.

A number of calix[6]arenes bearing ureas at the upper rim positions of alternate rings 1, 3 and 5 were prepared and studied in detail by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. N-Unsubstituted ureas were shown to dimerize through a cyclic array of hydrogen bonds to give cylindrical cavities capable of encapsulating small molecules such as dichloromethane, benzene and fluorobenzene. Slow equilibria between dimer and monomer were observed in [D6]DMSO-CDCl3 mixtures. By contrast, N-substituted ureas are monomeric. All urea monomers with bulky O-substituents display a solvent-dependent, slow equilibrium between C3v and Cs cone conformations.
