For a lattice \Lambda in the complex plane, let K_{\Lambda} be the field of \Lambda-elliptic functions. For two relatively prime integers p (respectively q) greater than 1, consider the endomorphisms \psi (resp. \phi) of K_{\Lambda} given by multiplication by p (resp. q) on the elliptic curve \mathbb{C}/\Lambda. We prove that if f (resp. g) are complex Laurent power series that satisfy linear difference equations over K_{\Lambda} with respect to \phi (resp. \psi) then there is a dichotomy. Either, for some sublattice \Lambda' of \Lambda, one of f or g belongs to the ring K_{\Lambda'}[z,z^{-1},\zeta(z,\Lambda')], where \zeta(z,\Lambda') is the Weierstrass zeta function, or f and g are algebraically independent over K_{\Lambda}. This is an elliptic analogue of a recent theorem of Adamczewski, Dreyfus, Hardouin and Wibmer (over the field of rational functions).

This paper is a continuation of [G-dS1]. We study foliations of two types on Shimura varieties $S$ in characteristic $p$. The first, which we call "tautological foliations", are defined on Hilbert modular varieties, and lift to characteristic $0$. The second, the "$V$-foliations", are defined on unitary Shimura varieties in characteristic $p$ only, and generalize the foliations studied by us before, when the CM field in question was quadratic imaginary. We determine when these foliations are $p$-closed, and the locus where they are smooth. Where not smooth, we construct a "successive blow up" of our Shimura variety to which they extend as smooth foliations. We discuss some integral varieties of the foliations. We relate the quotient of $S$ by the foliation to a purely inseparable map from a certain component of another Shimura variety of the same type, with parahoric level structure at $p$, to $S.$, Comment: To appear in Journal of Algebraic Geometry. 1 figure

This is a largely expository paper, providing a self-contained account on the results of [Sch-Si1, Sch-Si2], in the cases denoted there 2Q and 2M. These papers of Sch\"afke and Singer supplied new proofs to the main theorems of [Bez-Bou, Ad-Be], on the rationality of power series satisfying a pair of independent q-difference, or Mahler, equations. We emphasize the language of $\Gamma$-difference modules, instead of difference equations or systems. Although in the two cases mentioned above this is only a semantic change, we also treat a new case, which may be labeled 1M1Q. Here the group $\Gamma$ is generalized dihedral rather than abelian, and the language of equations is inadequate. In the last section we explain how to generalize the main theorems in case 2Q to finite characteristic.

We study finite dimensional vector spaces over fields of elliptic functions equipped with two commuting aotomorphisms \sigma and \tau induced by isogenies of relatively prime orders. We give a structure theorem for such objects, that reveals a connection to the classification of vector bundles on elliptic curves by Atiyah. As an application we prove an elliptic analogue of a conjecture of Loxton and van der Poorten which has been recently proved by Adamczewski and Bell., Comment: 34 pages

Let P and Q be relatively prime integers greater than 1, and f a real valued discretely supported function on a finite dimensional real vector space V. We prove that if f_{P}(x)=f(Px)-f(x) and f_{Q}(x)=f(Qx)-f(x) are both \Lambda-periodic for some lattice \Lambda\subset V, then so is f (up to a modification at 0). This result is used to prove a theorem on the arithmetic of elliptic function fields. In the last section we discuss the higher rank analogue of this theorem and explain why it fails in rank 2. Let L be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic 0. We present a variant of the theory of (\phi,\Gamma)-modules associated with Lubin-Tate groups, developed by Kisin and Ren [Ki-Re], in which we replace the Lubin-Tate tower by the maximal abelian extension \Gamma = Gal(L^ab/L). This variation allows us to compute the functors of induction and restriction for (\phi,\Gamma)-modules, when the ground field L changes. We also give a self-contained account of the Cherbonnier-Colmez theorem on overconvergence in our setting., Comment: 19 pages

We define a theta operator on p-adic vector-valued modular forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature, over a quadratic imaginary field in which p is inert. We study its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions and prove that it extends holomorphically beyond the {\mu}-ordinary locus, when applied to scalar-valued forms., Comment: 46 pages

Let $E$ be a quadratic imaginary field and let $p$ be a prime which is inert in $E.$ We study three types of Picard modular surfaces in positive characteristic $p$ and the morphisms between them. The first Picard surface, denoted $S$, parametrizes triples $(A,\phi,\iota)$ comprised of an abelian threefold $A$ with an action $\iota$ of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{E}$, and a principal polarization $\phi$. The second surface, $S_{0}(p)$, parametrizes, in addition, a suitably restricted choice of a subgroup $H\subset A[p]$ of rank $p^{2}$. The third Picard surface, $\widetilde{S}$, parametrizes triples $(A,\psi,\iota)$ similar to those parametrized by $S$, but where $\psi$ is a polarization of degree $p^{2}$. We study the components, singularities and naturally defined stratifications of these surfaces, and their behaviour under the morphisms. We study the supersingular curves on Picard modular surfaces modulo a prime $p$ which is inert in the underlying quadratic imaginary field. Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. We show that every Schwartz function on F, with values in an algebraic closure of Q_p, is the uniform limit of a sequence of Schwartz functions, whose Fourier transforms tend uniformly to 0. The proof uses the notion of q-binomial coefficients and some classical identities between them.

We study the reduction of Picard modular surfaces modulo an inert prime, mod p and p-adic modular forms. We construct a theta operator on such modular forms and study its poles and its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions.

Let F be a local field of characteristic 0. The Breuil-Schneider conjecture for GL_2(F) predicts which locally algebraic representations of this group admit an integral structure. We extend the methods of [K-dS12], which treated smooth representations only, to prove the conjecture for some locally algebraic representations as well.

We give an elementary proof of low rank cases of the conjecture that the tensor product of two semistable Euclidean lattices is again semistable.
