Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is a widespread approach in general surgery. Computer guiding software, such as the augmented reality (AR), the virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), has been proposed to help surgeons during MIS. This study aims to report these technologies' current knowledge and diffusion during surgical training in Italy. A web-based survey was developed under the aegis of the Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery (SICE). Two hundred and seventeen medical doctors' answers were analyzed. Participants were surgeons (138, 63.6%) and residents in surgery (79, 36.4%). The mean knowledge of the role of the VR, AR and MR in surgery was 4.9 ± 2.4 (range 1-10). Most of the participants (122, 56.2%) did not have experience with any proposed technologies. However, although the lack of experience in this field, the answers about the functioning of the technologies were correct in most cases. Most of the participants answered that VR, AR and MR should be used more frequently for the teaching and training and during the clinical activity (170, 80.3%) and that such technologies would make a significant contribution, especially in training (183, 84.3%) and didactic (156, 71.9%). Finally, the main limitations to the diffusion of these technologies were the insufficient knowledge (182, 83.9%) and costs (175, 80.6%). Based on the present study, in Italy, the knowledge and dissemination of these technologies are still limited. Further studies are required to establish the usefulness of AR, VR and MR in surgical training.

This paper presents the main security measures used by many internationalretailers to prevent thefts, and distinguishes the effects onretailer, manufacturing and customers. This qualitative research study isbased on direct experience of Checkpoint Systems, a global leader inshrinkage management and indirect testimony of additional businessexperiences. The solutions analyzed allow retailers to improve productdisplay and customer service and to optimize the internal efficiency ofthe stores by reducing costs and times, while producers improve visualbranding and efficiency. In addition, investments in technological developmentand source tagging give stores adequate security levels withoutinterfering with customer shopping experience.

Background: Single-port laparoscopic surgery as an alternative to conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy for benign disease has not yet been accepted as a standard procedure. The aim of the multi-port versus single-port cholecystectomy trial was to compare morbidity rates after single-access (SPC) and standard laparoscopy (MPC). Methods: This non-inferiority phase 3 trial was conducted at 20 hospital surgical departments in six countries. At each centre, patients were randomly assigned to undergo either SPC or MPC. The primary outcome was overall morbidity within 60 days after surgery. Analysis was by intention to treat. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01104727). Results: The study was conducted between April 2011 and May 2015. A total of 600 patients were randomly assigned to receive either SPC (n = 297) or MPC (n = 303) and were eligible for data analysis. Postsurgical complications within 60 days were recorded in 13 patients (4.7 %) in the SPC group and in 16 (6.1 %) in the MPC group (P = 0.468); however, single-access procedures took longer [70 min (range 25â265) vs. 55 min (range 22â185); PÂ

- Abstract
Objectives: As a strong association between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and spondyloarthritis (SpA) has been hypothesised, our main objective was to explore by power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) the presence of subclinical enthesitis in asymptomatic HIV patients. The presence of subclinical synovitis was also evaluated., Methods: Consecutive asymptomatic HIV patients were studied and compared with asymptomatic HCV patients and healthy controls (HC). All subjects underwent a clinical and PDUS bilateral examination of the following entheses and joints: epicondyle, quadriceps, patellar, Achilles and plantar fascia; wrists, II and III metacarpo-phalangeal, knee and ankle., Results: Twenty-nine HIV, 32 HCV and 25 HC were recruited; 1.032 entheses and 860 joints were examined. Clinical diagnosis of enthesitis was made in 10.3% HIV patients, 6.2% HCV patients (p=0.66) and none HC (p=0.24). PDUS enthesitis was found in 72.4% HIV, 28.1% HCV (p=0.0008) and 12% HC (p<0.0001). Clinical diagnosis of synovitis was made in 3.4% HIV patients, 9.3% HCV patients (p=0.61) and none HC (p=1). PDUS abnormalities were documented in 24.1% HIV patients, 71.8% HCV patients (p=0.0003) and none HC (p=0.0001). In detecting enthesitis and synovitis, PDUS was more sensitive than clinical examination both in HIV and HCV patients., Conclusions: Our preliminary study shows the high frequency of PDUS enthesitis in asymptomatic HIV patients, which highlights the close link between HIV and SpA. Further studies are desirable on a larger number of HIV patients to confirm these results. PDUS proved to be more sensitive than clinical examination in detecting subclinical involvement of entheses and joints.
