The elite sport movement for athletes with hearing impairments, namely Deaflympics, differs from the Paralympic and Olympic sport movements because it exhibits a variety of distinct sociocultural and organisational characteristics. Yet, mental training with Deaflympic athletes receives little to no attention from the scientific community. Little is known about sport psychology consultants' (SPCs) work with Deaflympic athletes. In this study, we explored SPCs' exposure to so called Deaf sport as well as their experiences, attitudes, and assumptions regarding the utility of psychological skills training (PST) with Deaflympic athletes. A self-constructed questionnaire with closed and semi-open questions was completed by 93 (58.8% female) SPCs in European German-speaking countries. Analyses revealed SPCs had limited exposure to Deaflympic sport but indicated readiness to work with Deaflympic athletes. SPCs shared no reasons as to why PST skills and techniques would not be effective with Deaflympic athletes. However, SPCs regarded communication challenges as a major obstacle. We conclude that the integration of elite Deaf sport in SPCs' training programmes is vital, considering SPCs' lack of exposure and experience with Deaflympic athletes as well as their communication insecurities. In addition, further empirical research on PST effectiveness in Deaflympics athletes should provide the foundation for evidence-based utility of applied sport psychology in Deaflympic sport. Anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that members of the First Nations Deaf community experience more barriers when engaging with the criminal justice system than those who are not deaf. Therefore, our purpose for writing this article is to highlight legal and policy issues related to First Nations Deaf people, including perspectives of professionals working with these communities, living in Australia who have difficulty in accessing supports within the criminal justice system. In this article, we present data from semi-structured qualitative interviews focused on four key themes: (a) indefinite detention and unfit to plead, (b) a need for an intersectional approach to justice, (c) applying the maximum extent of the law while minimizing social services–related resources, and (d) the need for language access and qualified sign language interpreters. Through this article and the related larger sustaining project, we seek to center the experiences and needs of First Nations Deaf communities to render supports for fair, just, and equitable access in the Australian criminal justice system to this historically marginalized group. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, introduced at the beginning of the 21st century, brought significant regulations ensuring the full and active participation of disabled persons, recognizing their individual and cultural characteristics, and accepting fundamental communication tools such as Braille for the blind and sign language for the Deaf and hard of hearing. Türkiye signed this convention on March 30, 2007, and it came into force on May 3, 2008. Following these regulations, the declaration of 2020 as the "Year of Accessibility" accelerated academic research and studies in this field. Unlike other disabled groups, the Deaf community, proud of their deafness and shaped by their use of sign languages, is characterized as local subcultures within the hearing society. Numerous studies on the Deaf community have revealed the existence of a transnational Deaf culture and world through shared experiences and similarities in the structures of sign languages. The Deaf community in Türkiye, acting in solidarity within federations and associations for the Deaf and hard of hearing across all regions of Türkiye, exhibits a rich subculture with national and international activities such as theater and film and trains licensed athletes. This study aims to shed light on the roots of the culture of the Turkish Deaf community through historical data from a socio-cultural approach that considers deafness in terms of identity and community belonging. Examining the cultural characteristics of this community and their identities is crucial to understanding the current cultural structure of the Turkish Deaf community. Information about Turkish Deaf culture before the Ottoman era is almost nonexistent. The first traces of this culture are found in Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk and Kutadgu Bilig. More detailed information is obtained from sources discussing the lives of Deaf officials employed in the palace of the Ottoman Empire. This study aims to reveal the roots of Turkish Deaf culture in the historical process, starting from the Ottoman period, through data obtained from local and foreign historical sources. Based on this data, the significant and privileged roles of Deaf and hard of hearing people, especially in the palace, their lifestyles, clothing, fondness for art and literature, identities, and societal roles will be examined. This study is also significant for the Turkish Deaf community to understand their cultural roots and shared values. The cultural-linguistic education of the deaf has been minimally incorporated into the Chilean educational system. It has only been in the past decade that deaf adults have been included in classrooms with didactic approaches centered on hearing culture. This research aims to investigate deaf narratives to develop a pedagogical proposal grounded in deaf epistemologies. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 deaf individuals using Chilean Sign Language. The data collected was analyzed using Atlas.ti software, employing open and axial coding. The findings indicate that a pedagogical approach for the deaf should encompass the following elements: deaf identity, Chilean Sign Language, and a safe educational environment. The article presents the discussion on greater contribution from folklore and folklorists in global health, international development, social justice, and human rights efforts. Topics include emphasizing the value of folklore in understanding communities and addressing disability issues; and intersection of folklore and anthropology, the unique insights folklore brings to disability research, and the universal presence of disability and its cultural narratives.

This thesis clipping, which is still in progress in the Doctorate in Education program at Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná, aims to present an overview of how slam poetry has been an instrument of strengthening identity and reexistence of the deaf community in Brazil. Slam is a literary genre that arrived in the country from the United States and has been gaining ground in the Brazilian deaf community. To achieve the objectives set out here, three slam poems recited by deaf poets (slammers) were examined. For the development of this study, qualitative research, of an exploratory and descriptive type and bibliographical procedure, was privileged. The theoretical approach will privilege re-existence literacy, literature and deaf culture. Preliminary results indicate that slam poetry contributes to a scenario of recognition and belonging to deaf culture and literature, which has transgressed the hearing social order. Abstract\nPoints of InterestThis research aims to define and identify the characteristics of hearing culture in the United States, particularly in contrast to Deaf culture. Through three focus group interviews with 18 participants from different backgrounds, including deaf individuals with both deaf and hearing parents, as well as hearing individuals affiliated with the Deaf community, key themes emerged. These themes included defining cultures, audiovocal orientation, mixed spaces, negotiating one’s role as a hearing person, perception, development of hearing identity, and orientation. This study seeks to shed light on the ways in which hearing individuals navigate the world with their primary senses of listening and speaking, in contrast to deaf individuals who rely on vision and touch. Ultimately, this research aims to provide a better understanding of the complexities of cultural dynamics between the hearing and Deaf worlds. Culturally and linguistically Deaf people experience disproportionate suffering and deprivation in prison settings globally (Zidenberg 2021). This article uses the medical and social models of disability to highlight some of the underlying reasons for this. Deaf people view their Deafness through a cultural lens and usually disassociate from views which align with these models (Lane 1995). However, they are prominent across society and in relevant equality legislation, and thus impact the Deaf Community significantly (Obasi 2008). This article explores how the nature of the prison environment – a hostile, disempowering place, designed for similarity, changes and heightens the impact of perspectives which align with the medical and social models. Throughout, findings are presented from qualitative research involving interviews with Deaf prisoners and hearing staff members in England, showing that there is little room for a cultural model of Deafness in prison, and in consequence, prison becomes medically deafening for Deaf prisoners. The Deaf Community is a culturally distinct group comprised of people who value their Deafness and commonly use sign language to communicate. Hearing people generally view deafness as a medical problem and have little understanding of the Deaf Community. This creates difficulties for Deaf people because the Deaf world is part of a wider hearing world. The hearing world is more oppressive in prison because it is hostile, disempowering and designed for people who can easily adjust to the regime. There is a lack of Deaf awareness across the prison system, and appropriate adjustments are rarely made for Deaf prisoners. Relevant equality legislation can create further challenges for Deaf prisoners because it does not recognise the needs of the Deaf Community, and its stipulations are too ambiguous to be effective in prisons. Introduction: Hearing is crucial for a child's development, influencing speech, cognition, and emotional well-being. Early detection of hearing disorders is vital, yet India faces challenges in implementing effective newborn hearing screening (NBHS) programs. This research explores the perspectives of audiologists, focusing on the major and minor challenges faced and current protocols followed across diverse setups in India. Method: A two-phase study involved questionnaire development and data collection from 116 audiologists nationwide. The survey addressed demographics, current practices, challenges faced, and opinions on NBHS improvements. Results: Findings revealed disparities in screening protocols, with 42 variations reported. Challenges included ambient noise control, communication gaps, and lack of interdisciplinary support. Audiologists emphasized the need for sensitizing healthcare professionals, free screening, and increased manpower to enhance NBHS efficacy. Conclusion: The study aligns with global challenges in NBHS program implementation. Rural areas face a shortage of audiologists, emphasizing the necessity to train community health workers. The varied screening protocols and delays in screening timeframe underscore the need for standardized guidelines and increased funding. Audiologists play a pivotal role in NBHS success. To overcome challenges, standardizing protocols, sensitizing healthcare professionals, and promoting community-based screening are crucial. The study emphasizes proactive measures among audiologists, continual research, and collaboration to enhance evidence-based practices and policy improvements in newborn hearing screening. Emotional display rules refer to the expression of culturally prescribed and socially acceptable emotions across different people and situations (Wu & Schulz, 2020). The emotional display rules among hearing adults across several cultures are well defined and depend on the type of emotion, the individuals involved in the exchange, and the situation. Regarding Deaf culture in the United States, this minoritized group may follow unique emotional display rules (Hosie et al., 2000), but almost no research has been conducted with this population and the research that has been completed focused only on youth. The present study explores perceived emotional expressions among a sample of deaf and hard-of-hearing adults using the Display Rule Assessment Inventory (DRAI: Matsumoto et al., 2005). Eighty-one Deaf acculturated adults (age range = 18 to 40 years, female = 45, white = 49) participated in the study. The emotional display rules endorsed on the DRAI by this sample included (a) expressing more positive than negative emotions, (b) expressing differing levels of emotions depending on the type of person involved in an interaction, and (c) expressing more emotions in public than private settings. These findings contribute to our emerging understanding of how emotional expression is perceived by Deaf acculturated adults and the potential influence of language and culture. Readers of Benito Cereno, Melville’s only story about slavery, have long debated whether the Black mutineers aboard the San Dominick are, as the narrator suggests, “voiceless.” This essay begins with the self-fashioned muteness of the rebellion’s leaders to offer a new linguistic genealogy of the novella, unpacking how Melville uses the cultural and legal structures of muteness to reframe Black communication. The category mute organizes the story’s description, characterization, dialogue, and mode and structures the conditions of possibility for Black testimony. Such lessons were, the story’s publication context reveals, more available to Melville’s original readers. In showing how cultural and legal structures associated with disability served as resources for Black rights, this essay reveals how structurally intersectional analysis can resurface central aspects of a text. This article highlights how the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) is neglected in Brazil, with emphasis mainly on the current health situation, since a large part of the non-hearing Brazilian population has difficulties in establishing communication with professionals, such as doctors, nurses and psychologists. listeners, as they do not dominate communication through LIBRAS. Thus, scientific research was carried out based on a narrative literature review seeking a critical reflection on communication between deaf and hearing people, on the history of deaf culture, on the reasons that culminate in ineffective care for deaf individuals and on the possible ways to solve health system deficits for the non-hearing population. Music educators and researchers have grown increasingly aware of the need for traditional musical practices to promote inclusive music for disabled people. Inclusive music participation has been addressed by Accessible Digital Musical Instruments (ADMIs), which welcome different ways of playing and perceiving music, with considerable impact on music-making for disabled people. ADMIs offer exciting possibilities for instrument design to consider and incorporate individual constraints (e.g., missing arm, low vision, hearing loss, etc.) more than traditional acoustic instruments, whose generally fixed design allows little room for disabled musicians inclusivity. Relatively few works discuss ADMIs in the context of disability studies, and no work has investigated the impact of different disability models in the process of designing inclusive music technology. This paper proposes criteria to classify ADMIs according to the medical, social, and cultural models of disability, then applies these criteria to evaluate eleven ADMIs targeting d/Deaf people. This analysis allows us to reflect on the design of ADMIs from different perspectives of disability, giving insights for future projects and deepening our understanding of medical, social, and cultural aspects of accessible music technology.

Objective: The Deaf community is an ethnolinguistic minority group. Low sensitivity to Deaf culture contributes to health disparities among Deaf patients. This study determines the level of sensitivity to Deaf culture among otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) and audiology trainees. Methods: Cross-sectional survey study of OHNS and audiology trainees from 10 large US institutions. Trainees were queried on their exposure to and comfort with Deaf patients and their education on, attitude toward, and awareness and knowledge of Deaf culture. Sensitivity to Deaf culture was operationalized as awareness and knowledge of Deaf culture. These were assessed using a 35-item instrument that was previously developed using a d/Deaf community-based participatory approach to research. We used T-tests to compare the sample to previous samples of medical students with training in Deaf culture (MS-TDCs) and general practitioners (GPs). Results: There were 91 completed surveys (response rate 44.5%). Almost all were aware of Deaf culture (97.8%). The mean knowledge score was 55.0% (standard deviation (SD) 13.4%), which was significantly higher than that for GPs at 43.0% (SD 15.0%) (95% confidence interval 8.1%, 15.8%, P <.0001) but significantly lower than that for MS-TDCs at 69.0% (SD 13.0%)(CI −20.3%, −7.6%, P <.0001). Knowledge scores were comparable for OHNS and audiology trainees (P =.09). Conclusion: This sample of OHNS and audiology trainees was more sensitive to Deaf culture than GPs but less sensitive than MS-TDCs. Developing specialty-specific education may be warranted. This article aims to contribute to healthcare communication literature by providing factors that result in mistrust and miscommunication for Deaf people. Deaf people experience a lot of health inequity, which can be, in large part, attributed to being a result of communication and misunderstanding between Deaf people and healthcare staff, resulting in mistrust. Presenting outcomes of practical experiments as well as theoretical reasons for the misunderstanding and mistrust allows to make suggestions about how to improve communication for the future. This review can serve as guidance for factors that contribute to miscommunication that should be avoided by healthcare staff and for lessons learned from positive experiences that should be scaled up and applied to ensure more clear and supportive communication. The focus of this study was the relationship between leaders and their team members and how Deaf identity can predict the quality of that relationship. Employment and personal identity are often linked, and this is true of Deaf identity. This study explores how Deaf identity impacts leader-member exchanges and seeks to identify components of Deaf identity that promote better workplace experiences. The results of a Pearson r correlation analysis supported a significant positive correlation between the Deaf Acculturation Scale score and the Leader-Member Exchange 7 questionnaire score. A linear regression analysis indicated that Deaf identity was a significant predictor of the leader-member relationship and accounted for the variance in the leader-member relationship. Of the predictors investigated, cultural involvement, cultural preferences, cultural knowledge, and language competence were significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluates the generality of self-control theory with a previously untested cultural group rarely studied by criminologists, the Deaf community. Survey data (n = 428) from participants attending a university that houses a college for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing were compared with a sample of "hearing" students. The findings support Gottfredson and Hirschi's cultural invariance thesis as self-control was consistently able to predict a wide range of rule-breaking behaviors among the culturally distinct groups examined. However, several unexpected results challenge the parental management thesis. In particular, exposure to effective parenting techniques was a significant contributor to variations in self-control for the hearing, but not the Deaf sample. Additionally, self-control did not fully mediate the relationship between child-rearing experiences and norm violating behaviors for the Deaf sample. Implications of these findings are discussed. This research aims to present an overview of the main aspects that guide bilingual and visual science education for deaf students, considering approaches to Physics Teaching and Astronomy Education. For this, a bibliographic survey was carried out in national journals in the area, seeking to establish the main linguistic barriers faced in science education for deaf students. As well, as to enable the recognition of how these barriers can be overcome and what are the strategies, teaching practices and visual resources used to overcome the difficulties faced in science education for the deaf. Thus, among the main linguistic barriers, stand out teacher's lack of knowledge about the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and deaf culture, lack of understanding of the concepts of Physics by the Libras Interpreters, the lack of signs for scientific terminologies, mainly in Astronomy, as well, as a late learning of Libras and written Portuguese by deaf students. In addition, the greatest problems in scientific education for the deaf are found in the context of regular schooling and, therefore, there are a greater number of studies that address this context. Fortunately, many studies have pointed out possible solutions to these problems. In general, both teachers and Libras Interpreters have resorted to the use of visual and bilingual didactic-pedagogical strategies and resources, considering different bodily, sensory and multimodal modes, in promoting interaction, communication and the scientific teaching-learning process. Online course design and delivery rapidly expanded due to Covid-19. The impact on Deaf/Hard of hearing (D/HH) learners since the pandemic is unknown. In this prepandemic qualitative study, however, ninety-three (93) D/HH online students participated in a survey, from which nine (9) participated in a focus group interview to share their experiences in their online classes. The results describe both the positive influences and the challenges affecting this population in mainstream online classes. The Deaf Community in Mashonaland region constitutes a part of the minority population in Zimbabwe and this minority group happens to have capable farmers who are often sidelined from agricultural activities because of their difference from the hearing population. The researcher consulted the San Code of Research Ethics for advice. The study involved Deaf farmers who are involved in animal husbandry, horticulture and crop production, their workers in Mashonaland region. In total eight (8) respondents were interviewed. The researcher recorded and transcribed the collected data. The thematic analysis method was used during data analysis. The researcher grouped the transcribed data into thematic areas based on the research objectives. The findings revealed that lack of important information on important issues such as climate change, lack of access to land ownerships, communication barriers, lack of access to tertiary education and the seclusion of Deaf Community's representation in policy making are the challenges faced by Deaf farmers in their participation in sustainable food production for nutrition and health in Mashonaland region. This research aims to analyze, in the autobiographical work O Grito da Gaivota, traces, elements, and/or aspects of deaf culture and identity, considering the need to deepen the theme of deafness, hitherto little-known and undervalued subject, leading the deaf individuals to be misnamed and often seen with inferiority. The research is grounded in theoretical assumptions from works by Laraia (2005), Santana and Bergamo (2005), Strobel (2008), Perlin and Strobel (2014), Strobel (2016), among others. Regarding the methodology, this research is classified as documentary as it uses primary sources; qualitative, as it considers the dynamic relationship between the real world and the subject; and descriptive, as it aims to describe and analyze the work according to the general objective. Similarities between developing a deaf identity and a sexual minority identity have been postulated upon the parallel experience of oppressed minority positions. Sign language interviews with eight deaf gay British men explored their intersectional understanding of deaf-gay lived experiences, analyzed through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. During their adolescence deaf gay men sometimes experienced being in a position where they were trying hard to be something they were not: oral and heterosexual for hearing non-signing others (including heterosexual members of their family of origin). Participants spoke of increasingly being drawn toward a welcoming signing cultural world that supported them against deaf minority stress. Coming out as gay presented not only potential family of origin difficulties, but also threatened connection with the deaf community, leaving participants intensely fearful of gay visibility and stigma. Self-fulfillment and community building was sought through positions that ranged from oralist-heteronormativity through to the deaf-gay community. Along the way these journeys included experiences of pride and success alongside those of struggle. The role of fingerspelling as to its unique features, its use, and its function in the culture and education of the Saudi Deaf population has not been examined. Specifically, this study focuses on assessing historical and existing attitudes and beliefs of Saudi Deaf people regarding the importance of fingerspelling and situations in which they use it. While currently, a disparity exists between the attitudes and beliefs of younger, somewhat more progressive Deaf people and those of their more traditional elders, and the obvious necessity of the acceptance and use of the fingerspelling in Saudi Arabian Deaf daily life and education. This study explores the South Korean Deaf community's response to sign language interpreting during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) health crisis, focusing on individual factors affecting the signers' comprehension. The data were collected from a mobile-based questionnaire survey conducted among 401 Deaf adults; binary probit modelling was adopted to analyse the data. The major findings are: (i) 59.9 per cent of the respondents understood less than 70 per cent of the interpreting; (ii) males and urban residents tend to understand better; (iii) younger people (less than 50 years) and signers with a Bachelor's degree or higher are likely to have lower comprehension; and (iv) Deaf adults who visited a doctor after the COVID-19 outbreak tended to have lower comprehension. The findings demonstrate that individual characteristics, including age, impact significantly on the extent to which Deaf individuals understand the sign language interpreting of COVID-19 information, indicating that steps are needed to achieve a Deaf-inclusive society during a health disaster., (© 2024 ODI.)
