We present Keck/KPIC phase II $K$-band observations of the non-transiting hot Jupiter HD 143105 b. Using a cross-correlation approach, we make the first detection of the planetary atmosphere at $K_p = 185^{+11}_{-13}\rm km\ s^{-1}$ and an inferior conjunction time 2.5 hours before the previously-published ephemeris. The retrieved $K_p$ value, in combination with orbital period, mass of the host star, and lack of transit detection, gives an orbital inclination of $78^{\circ+2}_{-12}$ and a true planet mass of 1.23$\pm0.10\rm\ M_J$. While the equilibrium temperature of HD 143105 b is in the transition regime between non-inverted and inverted atmospheres, our analysis strongly prefers a non-inverted atmosphere. Retrieval analysis indicates the atmosphere of HD 143105 b is cloud-free to approximately 1 bar and dominated by H$_2$O absorption ($\log \rm H_2O_{MMR} = -3.9^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$), placing only an upper limit on the CO abundance ($\log \rm CO_{MMR} < -3.7$ at 95% confidence). We place no constraints on the abundances of Fe, Mg, or $^{13}$CO. From these abundances, we place an upper limit on the carbon-to-oxygen ratio for HD 143105 b, $\rm C/O < 0.2$ at 95% confidence, and find the atmospheric metallicity is approximately $0.1\times$ solar. The low metallicity may be responsible for the lack of a thermal inversion, which at the temperature of HD 143105 b would likely require significant opacity from TiO and/or VO. The $\sim$5 Myr PDS 70 is the only known system with protoplanets residing in the cavity of the circumstellar disk from which they formed, ideal for studying exoplanet formation and evolution within its natal environment. Here we report the first spin constraint and C/O measurement of PDS 70b from Keck/KPIC high-resolution spectroscopy. We detected CO (3.8 $\sigma$) and H$_2$O (3.5 $\sigma$) molecules in the PDS 70b atmosphere via cross-correlation, with a combined CO and H$_2$O template detection significance of 4.2 $\sigma$. Our forward model fits, using BT-Settl model grids, provide an upper limit for the spin-rate of PDS 70b ($<$29 km s$^{-1}$). The atmospheric retrievals constrain the PDS 70b C/O ratio to ${0.28}^{+0.20}_{-0.12}$ ($<$0.63 under 95$\%$ confidence level) and a metallicity [C/H] of ${-0.2}^{+0.8}_{-0.5}$ dex, consistent with that of its host star. The following scenarios can explain our measured C/O of PDS 70b in contrast with that of the gas-rich outer disk (for which C/O $\gtrsim$ 1). First, the bulk composition of PDS 70b might be dominated by dust+ice aggregates rather than disk gas. Another possible explanation is that the disk became carbon-enriched $\textit{after}$ PDS 70b was formed, as predicted in models of disk chemical evolution and as observed in both very low mass star and older disk systems with $\textit{JWST}$/MIRI. Because PDS 70b continues to accrete and its chemical evolution is not yet complete, more sophisticated modeling of the planet and the disk, and higher quality observations of PDS 70b (and possibly PDS 70c), are necessary to validate these scenarios., Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 13 pages, 3 figures

ICLabel is an important plug-in function in EEGLAB, the most widely used software for EEG data processing. A powerful approach to automated processing of EEG data involves decomposing the data by Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and then classifying the resulting independent components (ICs) using ICLabel. While EEGLAB pipelines support high-performance computing (HPC) platforms running the open-source Octave interpreter, the ICLabel plug-in is incompatible with Octave because of its specialized neural network architecture. To enhance cross-platform compatibility, we developed a Python version of ICLabel that uses standard EEGLAB data structures. We compared ICLabel MATLAB and Python implementations to data from 14 subjects. ICLabel returns the likelihood of classification in 7 classes of components for each ICA component. The returned IC classifications were virtually identical between Python and MATLAB, with differences in classification percentage below 0.001%.

This work aims at investigating the impact of DNA geometry, compaction and calculation chain on DNA break and chromosome aberration predictions for high charge and energy (HZE) ions, using the Monte Carlo codes Geant4-DNA, RITRACKS and RITCARD. To ensure consistency of ion transport of both codes, we first compared microdosimetry and nanodosimetry spectra for different ions of interest in hadrontherapy and space research. The Rudd model was used for the transport of ions in both models. Developments were made in Geant4 (v11.2) to include periodic boundary conditions (PBC) to account for electron equilibrium in small targets. Excellent agreements were found for both microdosimetric and nanodosimetric spectra for all ion types, with and without PBC. Some discrepancies remain for low-energy deposition events, likely due to differences in electron interaction models. The latest results obtained using the newly available Geant4 example ``dsbandrepair'' will be presented and compared to DNA break predictions obtained with RITCARD.

Direct imaging (DI) campaigns are uniquely suited to probing the outer regions around young stars and looking for giant exoplanet and brown dwarf companions, hence providing key complementary information to radial velocity (RV) and transit searches for the purpose of demographic studies. However, the critical 5-20 au region, where most giant planets are thought to form, remains poorly explored, lying in-between RV and DI capabilities. Significant gains in detection performances can be attained at no instrumental cost by means of advanced post-processing techniques. In the context of the COBREX project, we have assembled the largest collection of archival DI observations to date in order to undertake a large and uniform re-analysis. In particular, this paper details the re-analysis of 400 stars from the GPIES survey operated at GPI@Gemini South. Following the pre-reduction of raw frames, GPI data cubes were processed by means of the PACO algorithm. Candidates were identified and vetted based on multi-epoch proper motion analysis -- whenever possible -- and by means of a suitable color-magnitude diagram. The conversion of detection limits into detectability maps allowed for an estimate of unbiased occurrence frequencies of giant planets and brown dwarfs. Deeper detection limits were derived compared to the literature, with up to a twofold gain in minimum detectable mass compared to previous GPI-based publications. Although no new substellar companion was confirmed, we identified two interesting planet candidates awaiting follow-up observations. We derive an occurrence rate of $1.7_{-0.7}^{+0.9}\%$ for $5$~\mjup$ < m < 13$~\mjup planets in $10~\text{au}< a < 100~\text{au}$, that raises to $2.2_{-0.8}^{+1.0}\%$ when including substellar objects up to 80 \mjup.(abridged), Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables. In this communication, we report on the results of the second phase of the Exoplanet Imaging Data Challenge started in 2019. This second phase focuses on the characterization of point sources (exoplanet signals) within multispectral high-contrast images from ground-based telescopes. We collected eight data sets from two high-contrast integral field spectrographs (namely Gemini-S/GPI and VLT/SPHERE-IFS) that we calibrated homogeneously, and in which we injected a handful of synthetic planetary signals (ground truth) to be characterized by the data challenge participants. The tasks of the participants consist of (1) extracting the precise astrometry of each injected planetary signals, and (2) extracting the precise spectro-photometry of each injected planetary signal. Additionally, the participants may provide the 1-sigma uncertainties on their estimation for further analyses. When available, the participants can also provide the posterior distribution used to estimate the position/spectrum and uncertainties. The data are permanently available on a Zenodo repository and the participants can submit their results through the EvalAI platform. The EvalAI submission platform opened on April 2022 and closed on the 31st of May 2024. In total, we received 4 valid submissions for the astrometry estimation and 4 valid submissions for the spectrophotometry (each submission, corresponding to one pipeline, has been submitted by a unique participant). Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) convey energy at subwavelength depths along surfaces. Using interdigital transducers (IDTs) and opto-acousto-optic transducers (OAOTs), researchers have harnessed coherent SAWs with nanosecond periods and micrometer localization depth for various applications. However, the utilization of cutting-edge OAOTs produced through surface nanopatterning techniques has set the upper limit for coherent SAW frequencies below 100 GHz, constrained by factors such as the quality and pitch of the surface nanopattern, not to mention the electronic bandwidth limitations of the IDTs. In this context, unconventional optically-controlled nano-transducers based on cleaved superlattices (SLs) are here presented as an alternative solution. To demonstrate their viability, we conducted proof-of-concept experiments using ultrafast lasers in a pump-probe configuration on SLs made of alternating AlxGa1-xAs and AlyGa1-yAs layers with approximately 70 nm periodicity and cleaved along their growth direction to produce a periodic nanostructured surface. The acoustic vibrations, generated and detected by laser beams incident on the cleaved surface, span a range from 40 GHz to 70 GHz, corresponding to the generalized surface Rayleigh mode and bulk modes within the dispersion relation. This exploration shows that, in addition to SAWs, cleaved SLs offer the potential to observe surface-skimming longitudinal and transverse acoustic waves at GHz frequencies. This proof-of-concept demonstration below 100 GHz in nanoacoustics using such an unconventional platform offers opportunities for realizing sub-THz to THz coherent surface acoustic vibrations in the future, as SLs can be epitaxially grown with atomic-scale layer width and quality., Comment: 38 pages, 8 figures, published at ACS Nano

Exoplanets form from circumstellar protoplanetary discs whose fundamental properties (notably their extent, composition, mass, temperature and lifetime) depend on the host star properties, such as their mass and luminosity. B-stars are among the most massive stars and their protoplanetary discs test extreme conditions for exoplanet formation. This paper investigates the frequency of giant planet companions around young B-stars (median age of 16 Myr) in the Scorpius-Centaurus association, the closest association containing a large population of B-stars. We systematically search for massive exoplanets with the high-contrast direct imaging instrument SPHERE using the data from the BEAST survey, that targets an homogeneous sample of young B-stars from the wide Sco-Cen association. We derive accurate detection limits in case of non-detections. We found evidence in previous papers for two substellar companions around 42 stars. The masses of these companions are straddling the ~13 Jupiter mass deuterium burning limit but their mass ratio with respect to their host star is close to that of Jupiter. We derive a frequency of such massive planetary mass companions around B stars of 11-5+7%, accounting for the survey sensitivity. The discoveries of substellar companions bcen b and mu2sco B happened after only few stars in the survey had been observed, raising the possibility that massive Jovian planets might be common around B-stars. However our statistical analysis show that the occurrence rate of such planets is similar around B-stars and around solar-type stars of similar age, while B-star companions exhibit low mass ratios and larger semi-major axis., Comment: Accepted in A&A

We present a new multi-dimensional, robust, and cell-centered finite-volume scheme for the ideal MHD equations. This scheme relies on relaxation and splitting techniques and can be easily used at high order. A fully conservative version is not entropy satisfying but is observed experimentally to be more robust than standard constrained transport schemes at low plasma beta. At very low plasma beta and high Alfv\'en number, we have designed an entropy-satisfying version that is not conservative for the magnetic field but preserves admissible states and we switch locally a-priori between the two versions depending on the regime of plasma beta and Alfv\'en number. This strategy is robust in a wide range of standard MHD test cases, all performed at second order with a classic MUSCL-Hancock scheme., Comment: accepted in JCP

Background: Targeted radiotherapies with low-energy ions show interesting possibilities for the selective irradiation of tumor cells, a strategy particularly appropriate for the treatment of disseminated cancer. Two promising examples are boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) and targeted radionuclide therapy with alpha-particle emitters (TAT). The successful clinical translation of these radiotherapies requires the implementation of accurate radiation dosimetry approaches able to take into account the impact on treatments of the biological effectiveness of ions and the heterogeneity in the therapeutic agent distribution inside the tumor cells. To this end, biophysical models can be applied to translate the interactions of radiations with matter into biological endpoints, such as cell survival. Purpose: The NanOx model was initially developed for predicting the cell survival fractions resulting from irradiations with the high-energy ion beams encountered in hadrontherapy. We present in this work a new implementation of the model that extends its application to irradiations with low-energy ions, as the ones found in TAT and BNCT. Methods: The NanOx model was adapted to consider the energy loss of primary ions within the sensitive volume (i.e., the cell nucleus). Additional assumptions were introduced to simplify the practical implementation of the model and reduce computation time. In particular, for low-energy ions the narrow-track approximation allowed to neglect the energy deposited by secondary electrons outside the sensitive volume, increasing significantly the performance of simulations. Calculations were performed to compare the original hadrontherapy implementation of the NanOx model with the present one in terms of the inactivation cross sections of human salivary gland cells as a function of the kinetic energy of incident alpha-particles. Results: The predictions of the previous and current versions of NanOx agreed for incident energies higher than 1 MeV/n. For lower energies, the new NanOx implementation predicted a decrease in the inactivation cross sections that depended on the length of the sensitive volume. Conclusions: We reported in this work an extension of the NanOx biophysical model to consider irradiations with low-energy ions, such as the ones found in TAT and BNCT. The excellent agreement observed at intermediate and high energies between the original hadrontherapy implementation and the present one showed that NanOx offers a consistent, self-integrated framework for describing the biological effects induced by ion irradiations. Future work will focus on the application of the latest version of NanOx to cases closer to the clinical setting.

We present results of our dynamical stream modelling for the North West Stream in the outer halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Comprising two main segments, the North West Stream was thought to be a single structured arching around M31. However, recent evidence suggests that it is two separate, unrelated, streams. To test this hypothesis we use observational data from 6 fields associated with the upper segment of the North West Stream together with 8 fields and 5 globular clusters associated with the lower segment to constrain model orbits. We fit both segments of the stream using a fixed potential model for M31 and an orbit integrator to compare orbits with the observed streams. We measure the central tracks and predict proper motions for for the upper segment (lower segment) finding ${\mu^*_{\alpha}}$ = 0.078$^{+0.015}_{-0.012}$ (0.085$^{+0.001}_{-0.002}$) mas/yr and ${\mu_{\delta}}$ = $-$0.05$^{+0.008}_{-0.009}$ ($-$0.095$^{+0.003}_{-0.005}$) mas/yr. Our results support the hypothesis that the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda XXVII is the progenitor of the upper segment of the North West Stream and that the upper and lower segments do not comprise a single structure. We propose that the upper segment, which appears to be on an infall trajectory with M31, be renamed the "Andromeda XXVII Stream" and the lower segment, also apparently infalling towards M31, retain the name "North West Stream"., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

GQ Lup B is one of the few substellar companions with a detected cicumplanetary disk, or CPD. Observations of the CPD suggest the presence of a cavity, possibly formed by an exo-satellite. Using the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC), a high contrast imaging suite that feeds a high resolution spectrograph (1.9-2.5 microns, R$\sim$35,000), we present the first dedicated radial velocity (RV) observations around a high-contrast, directly imaged substellar companion, GQ Lup B, to search for exo-satellites. Over 11 epochs, we find a best and median RV error of 400-1000 m/s, most likely limited by systematic fringing in the spectra due to transmissive optics within KPIC. With this RV precision, KPIC is sensitive to exomoons 0.6-2.8% the mass of GQ Lup B ($\sim 30 M_{\text{Jup}}$) at separations between the Roche limit and $65 R_{\text{Jup}}$, or the extent of the cavity inferred within the CPD detected around GQ Lup B. Using simulations of HISPEC, a high resolution infrared spectrograph planned to debut at W.M. Keck Observatory in 2026, we estimate future exomoon sensitivity to increase by over an order of magnitude, providing sensitivity to less massive satellites potentially formed within the CPD itself. Additionally, we run simulations to estimate the amount of material that different masses of satellites could clear in a CPD to create the observed cavity. We find satellite-to-planet mass ratios of $q > 2 \times 10^{-4}$ can create observable cavities and report a maximum cavity size of $\sim 51 \, R_{\text{Jup}}$ carved from a satellite., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) combines high contrast imaging with high resolution spectroscopy (R$\sim$35,000 in K band) to study directly imaged exoplanets and brown dwarfs in unprecedented detail. KPIC aims to spectrally characterize substellar companions through measurements of planetary radial velocities, spins, and atmospheric composition. Currently, the dominant source of systematic noise for KPIC is fringing, or oscillations in the spectrum as a function of wavelength. The fringing signal can dominate residuals by up to 10% of the continuum for high S/N exposures, preventing accurate wavelength calibration, retrieval of atmospheric parameters, and detection of planets with flux ratios less than 1% of the host star. To combat contamination from fringing, we first identify its three unique sources and adopt a physically informed model of Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavities to apply to post-processed data. We find this strategy can effectively model the fringing in observations of A0V/F0V stars, reducing the residual systematics caused by fringing by a factor of 2. Next, we wedge two of the transmissive optics internal to KPIC to eliminate two sources of fringing and confirm the third source as the entrance window to the spectrograph. Finally, we apply our previous model of the Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity to new data taken with the wedged optics to reduce the amplitude of the residuals by a factor of 10., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Young, self-luminous super-Jovian companions discovered by direct imaging provide a challenging test of planet formation and evolution theories. By spectroscopically characterizing the atmospheric compositions of these super-Jupiters, we can constrain their formation histories. Here we present studies of the recently discovered HIP 99770 b, a 16 MJup high-contrast companion on a 17 au orbit, using the fiber-fed high-resolution spectrograph KPIC (R~35,000) on the Keck II telescope. Our K-band observations led to detections of H2O and CO in the atmosphere of HIP 99770 b. We carried out free retrieval analyses using petitRADTRANS to measure its chemical abundances, including the metallicity and C/O ratio, projected rotation velocity (vsini), and radial velocity (RV). We found that the companion's atmosphere has C/O=0.55(-0.04/+0.06) and [M/H]=0.26(-0.23/+0.24) (1{\sigma} confidence intervals), values consistent with those of the Sun and with a companion formation via gravitational instability or core accretion. The projected rotation velocity < 7.8 km/s is small relative to other directly imaged companions with similar masses and ages. This may imply a near pole-on orientation or effective magnetic braking by a circumplanetary disk. In addition, we added the companion-to-primary relative RV measurement to the orbital fitting and obtained updated constraints on orbital parameters. We extend our previous demonstration of the first on-sky primary mirror segment closed-loop control on Keck using a vector-Zernike wavefront sensor (vZWFS), which improved the Strehl ratio on the NIRC2 science camera by up to 10 percentage points. Segment co-phasing errors contribute to Keck contrast limits and will be necessary to correct for the segmented Extremely Large Telescopes and future space missions. The goal of the post-AO vZWFS on Keck is to monitor and correct segment co-phasing errors in parallel with science observations. The ZWFS is ideal for measuring phase discontinuities and is one of the most sensitive WFSs, but has limited dynamic range. The Keck vZWFS consists of a metasurface mask imposing two different phase shifts to orthogonal polarizations, split into two pupil images, extending its dynamic range. We report on the vZWFS closed-loop co-phasing performance and early work towards understanding the interactions between the AO system and segment phasing. We discuss a comparison of the AO performance when co-phasing by aligning segment edges, as is currently done at Keck, compared with aligning to the average phase over the segments, as is done by the vZWFS., Comment: Proceedings of SPIE, 13097-61, 8 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

The first generation of ELT instruments includes an optical-infrared high-resolution spectrograph, indicated as ELT-HIRES and recently christened ANDES (ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph). ANDES consists of three fibre-fed spectrographs ([U]BV, RIZ, YJH) providing a spectral resolution of $\sim$100,000 with a minimum simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.4-1.8 $\mu$m with the goal of extending it to 0.35-2.4 $\mu$m with the addition of a U arm to the BV spectrograph and a separate K band spectrograph. It operates both in seeing- and diffraction-limited conditions and the fibre feeding allows several, interchangeable observing modes including a single conjugated adaptive optics module and a small diffraction-limited integral field unit in the NIR. Modularity and fibre-feeding allow ANDES to be placed partly on the ELT Nasmyth platform and partly in the Coud\'e room. ANDES has a wide range of groundbreaking science cases spanning nearly all areas of research in astrophysics and even fundamental physics. Among the top science cases, there are the detection of biosignatures from exoplanet atmospheres, finding the fingerprints of the first generation of stars, tests on the stability of Nature's fundamental couplings, and the direct detection of the cosmic acceleration. The Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC), a series of upgrades to the Keck II Adaptive Optics System and Instrument Suite, aims to demonstrate high-resolution spectroscopy of faint exoplanets that are spatially resolved from their host stars. In this paper, we measure KPIC's sensitivity to companions as a function of separation (i.e., the contrast curve) using on-sky data collected over four years of operation. We show that KPIC is able to reach contrasts of $1.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at 90 mas and $9.2 \times 10^{-6}$ at 420 mas separation from the star, and that KPIC can reach planet-level sensitivities at angular separations within the inner working angle of coronagraphic instruments such as GPI and SPHERE. KPIC is also able to achieve more extreme contrasts than other medium-/high-resolution spectrographs that are not as optimized for high-contrast performance. We decompose the KPIC performance budget into individual noise terms and discuss limiting factors. The fringing that results from combining a high-contrast imaging system with a high-resolution spectrograph is identified as an important source of systematic noise. After mitigation and correction, KPIC is able to reach within a factor of 2 of the photon noise limit at separations < 200 mas. Using Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) high-resolution ($R$~35000) spectroscopy from 2.29-2.49 $\mu$m, we present uniform atmospheric retrievals for eight young substellar companions with masses of ~10-30 $M_\textrm{Jup}$, orbital separations spanning ~50-360 au, and $T_\textrm{eff}$ between ~1500-2600 K. We find that all companions have solar C/O ratios, and metallicities, to within the 1-2$\sigma$ level, with the measurements clustered around solar composition. Stars in the same stellar associations as our systems have near-solar abundances, so these results indicate that this population of companions is consistent with formation via direct gravitational collapse. Alternatively, core accretion outside the CO snowline would be compatible with our measurements, though the high mass ratios of most systems would require rapid core assembly and gas accretion in massive disks. On a population level, our findings can be contrasted with abundance measurements for directly imaged planets with m<10 $M_\textrm{Jup}$, which show tentative atmospheric metal enrichment. In addition, the atmospheric compositions of our sample of companions are distinct from those of hot Jupiters, which most likely form via core accretion. For two companions with $T_\textrm{eff}$~1700-2000 K (kap And b and GSC 6214-210 b), our best-fit models prefer a non-gray cloud model with >3$\sigma$ significance. The cloudy models yield 2-3$\sigma$ lower $T_\textrm{eff}$ for these companions, though the C/O and [C/H] still agree between cloudy and clear models at the $1\sigma$ level. Finally, we constrain 12CO/13CO for three companions with the highest S/N data (GQ Lup b, HIP 79098 b, and DH Tau b), and report $v$sin($i$) and radial velocities for all companions., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 52 pages, 20 figures

We used the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) to obtain high-resolution (R$\sim$35,000) K-band spectra of kappa Andromedae b, a planetary-mass companion orbiting the B9V star, kappa Andromedae A. We characterized its spin, radial velocity, and bulk atmospheric parameters through use of a forward modeling framework to jointly fit planetary spectra and residual starlight speckles, obtaining likelihood-based posterior probabilities. We also detected H$_{2}$O and CO in its atmosphere via cross correlation. We measured a $v\sin(i)$ value for kappa And b of $38.42\pm{0.05}$ km/s, allowing us to extend our understanding of the population of close in bound companions at higher rotation rates. This rotation rate is one of the highest spins relative to breakup velocity measured to date, at close to $50\%$ of breakup velocity. We identify a radial velocity $-17.35_{-0.09}^{+0.05}$ km/s, which we use with existing astrometry and RV measurements to update the orbital fit. We present the projected rotational velocity and molecular abundances for HD 33632 Ab obtained via Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer high-resolution spectroscopy. HD 33632 Ab is a nearby benchmark brown dwarf companion at a separation of $\sim$20 au that straddles the L/T transition. Using a forward-modeling framework with on-axis host star spectra, self-consistent substellar atmospheric and retrieval models for HD 33632 Ab, we derive a projected rotational velocity of 53 $\pm$ 3 km/s and carbon/water mass fractions of log CO = $-$2.3 $\pm$ 0.3 and log H$_2$O = $-$2.7 $\pm$ 0.2. The inferred carbon-to-oxygen ratio (C/O = 0.58 $\pm$ 0.14), molecular abundances, and metallicity ([C/H] = 0.0 $\pm$ 0.2 dex) of HD 33632 Ab are consistent with its host star. Although detectable methane opacities are expected in L/T transition objects, we did not recover methane in our KPIC spectra, partly due to the high $v\sin{i}$ and to disequilibrium chemistry at the pressures we are sensitive to. We parameterize the spin as the ratio of rotation over break-up velocity, and compare HD 33632 Ab to a compilation of >200 very low-mass objects (M$\lesssim$0.1 M$_{\odot}$) that have spin measurements in the literature. There appears to be no clear trend for the isolated field low-mass objects versus mass, but a tentative trend is identified for low-mass companions and directly imaged exoplanets, similar to previous findings. $\eta$ Tel is an 18 Myr system with a 2.09 M$_{\odot}$ A-type star and an M7-M8 brown dwarf companion, $\eta$ Tel B, separated by 4.2'' (208 au). High-contrast imaging campaigns over 20 years have enabled orbital and photometric characterization. $\eta$ Tel B, bright and on a wide orbit, is ideal for detailed examination. We analyzed three new SPHERE/IRDIS coronagraphic observations to explore $\eta$ Tel B's orbital parameters, contrast, and surroundings, aiming to detect a circumplanetary disk or close companion. Reduced IRDIS data achieved a contrast of 1.0$\times 10^{-5}$, enabling astrometric measurements with uncertainties of 4 mas in separation and 0.2 degrees in position angle, the smallest so far. With a contrast of 6.8 magnitudes in the H band, $\eta$ Tel B's separation and position angle were measured as 4.218'' and 167.3 degrees, respectively. Orbital analysis using Orvara code, considering Gaia-Hipparcos acceleration, revealed a low eccentric orbit (e $\sim$ 0.34), inclination of 81.9 degrees, and semi-major axis of 218 au. $\eta$ Tel B's mass was determined to be 48 \MJup, consistent with previous calculations. No significant residual indicating a satellite or disk around $\eta$ Tel B was detected. Context. High-resolution spectroscopy has the potential to drive a better understanding of the atmospheric composition, physics, and dynamics of young exoplanets and brown dwarfs, bringing clear insights into the formation channel of individual objects. Aims. Using the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC; R = 35,000), we aim to characterize a young brown dwarf HD 984 B. By measuring its C/O and 12CO/13CO ratios, we expect to gain new knowledge about its origin by confirming the difference in the formation pathways between brown dwarfs and super-Jupiters. Methods. We analysed the KPIC high-resolution spectrum (2.29-2.49 {\mu}m) of HD 984 B using an atmospheric retrieval framework based on nested sampling and petitRADTRANS, using both clear and cloudy models. Results. Using our best-fit model, we find C/O = 0.50+0.01-0.01 (0.01 is the statistical error) for HD 984 B which agrees with that of its host star within 1{\sigma} (0.40+0.20-0.20). We also retrieve an isotopolog 12CO/13CO ratio of 98+20-25 in its atmosphere, which is similar to that of the Sun. In addition, HD 984 B has a substellar metallicity with [Fe/H] = -0.62+0.02-0.02. Finally, we find that most of the retrieved parameters are independent of our choice of retrieval model. Conclusions. From our measured C/O and 12CO/13CO, the favored formation mechanism of HD 984 B seems to be via gravitational collapse or disk instability and not core accretion, which is a favored formation mechanism for giant exoplanets with m < 13 MJup and semimajor axis between 10 and 100 au. However, with only a few brown dwarfs with a measured 12CO/13CO ratio, similar analyses using high-resolution spectroscopy will become essential in order to determine planet formation processes more precisely., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

We present the first on-sky segmented primary mirror closed-loop piston control using a Zernike wavefront sensor (ZWFS) installed on the Keck II telescope. Segment co-phasing errors are a primary contributor to contrast limits on Keck and will be necessary to correct for the next generation of space missions and ground-based extremely large telescopes (ELTs), which will all have segmented primary mirrors. The goal of the ZWFS installed on Keck is to monitor and correct primary mirror co-phasing errors in parallel with science observations. The ZWFS is ideal for measuring phase discontinuities such as segment co-phasing errors and is one of the most sensitive WFS, but has limited dynamic range. The vector-ZWFS at Keck works on the adaptive optics (AO) corrected wavefront and consists of a metasurface focal plane mask which imposes two different phase shifts on the core of the point spread function (PSF) to two orthogonal light polarizations, producing two pupil images. This design extends the dynamic range compared with the scalar ZWFS. The primary mirror segment pistons were controlled in closed-loop using the ZWFS, improving the Strehl ratio on the NIRC2 science camera by up to 10 percentage points. The 1RXS J034231.8+121622 system consists of an M dwarf primary and a directly imaged low-mass stellar companion. We use high resolution spectroscopic data from Keck/KPIC to estimate the objects' atmospheric parameters and radial velocities (RVs). Using PHOENIX stellar models, we find that the primary has a temperature of 3460 $\pm$ 50 K a metallicity of 0.16 $\pm$ 0.04, while the secondary has a temperature of 2510 $\pm$ 50 K and a metallicity of $0.13\substack{+0.12 \\ -0.11}$. Recent work suggests this system is associated with the Hyades, placing it an older age than previous estimates. Both metallicities agree with current $[Fe/H]$ Hyades measurements (0.11 -- 0.21). Using stellar evolutionary models, we obtain significantly higher masses for the objects, of 0.30 $\pm$ 0.15 $M_\odot$ and 0.08 $\pm$ 0.01 $M_\odot$ (84 $\pm$ 11 $M_{Jup}$) respectively. Using the RVs and a new astrometry point from Keck/NIRC2, we find that the system is likely an edge-on, moderately eccentric ($0.41\substack{+0.27 \\ -0.08}$) configuration. We also estimate the C/O ratio of both objects using custom grid models, obtaining 0.42 $\pm$ 0.10 (primary) and 0.55 $\pm$ 0.10 (companion). From these results, we confirm that this system most likely went through a binary star formation process in the Hyades. Vortex fiber nulling (VFN) is a technique for detecting and characterizing faint companions at small separations from their host star. A near-infrared ($\sim2.3 \mu$m) VFN demonstrator mode was deployed on the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer (KPIC) instrument at the Keck Observatory and presented earlier. In this paper, we present the first VFN companion detections. Three targets, HIP 21543 Ab, HIP 94666 Ab, and HIP 50319 B, were detected with host-companion flux ratios between 70 and 430 at and within one diffraction beamwidth ($\lambda/D$). We complement the spectra from KPIC VFN with flux ratio and position measurements from the CHARA Array to validate the VFN results and provide a more complete characterization of the targets. This paper reports the first direct detection of these three M dwarf companions, yielding their first spectra and flux ratios. Our observations provide measurements of bulk properties such as effective temperatures, radial velocities, and v$\sin{i}$, and verify the accuracy of the published orbits. We present numerical solutions in a one-dimensional setting of quantum master equations that have been recently derived. We focus on the dynamics of a single heavy quark-antiquark pair in a Quark-Gluon Plasma in thermal equilibrium, in the so-called quantum Brownian regime where the temperature of the plasma is large in comparison with the spacing between the energy levels of the $Q\bar{Q}$ system. The one-dimensional potential used in the calculations has been adjusted so as to produce numbers that are relevant for the phenomenology of the charmonium. The equations are solved using different initial states and medium configurations. Various temperature regimes are studied and the effects of screening and collisions thoroughly analyzed. Technical features of the equations are analyzed. The contributions of the different operators that control the evolution are discussed as a function of the temperature. Some phenomenological consequences are addressed.

This document summarizes the efforts of the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force on "Suppression and (re)generation of quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC", centered around their 2019 and 2022 meetings. It provides a review of existing experimental results and theoretical approaches, including lattice QCD calculations and semiclassical and quantum approaches for the dynamical evolution of quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma as probed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The key ingredients of the transport models are itemized to facilitate comparisons of calculated quantities such as reaction rates, binding energies, and nuclear modification factors.
