RIPARIAN forests , *DISTRIBUTION (Probability theory) , *ECOLOGICAL zones , *FOREST surveys , *PLANT communities - Abstract
This study was carried out in Togo's ecological zone II, on Mount Atakora. It aimed to determine the diversity and demographic structure of woody species. Forest inventories were conducted on 69 circular plots of 20m radius. Altogether, 102 species wer e identified. These belonged to 77 genera and 32 families. The most common species were: Lannea acida (53.62%), Vitellaria paradoxa (44.94%), Burkea Africana (43.48%) and Daniellia oliveri (43.48%). The most represented families are Fabaceae (27 species) and Combretaceae (10 species). Four plant communities have been discriminated. The analysis of the identified plant communities showed a density of 202 stems/ha in riparian forests, 360 stems/ha in tree savannahs, 286 stems/ha in open forests and 236 stems/ha in shrub/tree savannahs. An "inverted J" shape characterizes the diameter structure. This indicates that small stems dominate. The distribution of stems by height class showed a positive asymmetric distribution in riparian forests, wooded savannahs, tree/shrub savannahs and open forests. This reflects the dominance of medium height individuals. Undergrowth is abundant in riparian forests and tree savannahs (53.43% and 56.30%) and average in wooded savannahs and opens forests (32.75% and 30.89%). Regeneration is high in riparian forests (66.24%), average in wooded savannahs and shrub/wooded savannahs (45.34% and 36.94%) and low in open forests (22.31%). The low regeneration rate in wooded savannahs and open forests could be due to anthropogenic threats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Burns are a worldwide major cause of injury. Burns result in damage to the skin and other organs, leading to open wounds, severe emotional and psychological complications, disability, and economic burden. In this article, we report our study of the relationship between patient demographics, burn etiology, and the incidence of burn wound infection. This study was conducted on 110 cases who presented with acute burns at the Burn Unit of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Tanta University Hospital, Egypt, in the period from January 2019 to January 2021. A prospective study was conducted, and the collected data were statistically analyzed regarding the different relationships between patient demographics, burn etiology, and the incidence of burn wound infection. In our study, most indoor burn injuries were scalds, most of which were accidental, while outdoor burns were mostly flame burns. Most burns in the 0-10 years age group were scalds, while in the other age groups, burns were mostly of the flame type. Females had significantly more frequent scald burns. The most important statistically significant prognostic risk factors for burn wound infection are TBSA of burn, depth of burn wound, and length of hospital stay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

URBAN growth , *GEOMATICS , *DEMOGRAPHY - Abstract
When it was created around the 1980s, Kimpese was a small commercial crossroads and a transit zone for foodstuffs coming from the Bas-Fleuve district, the territory of Luozi and the villages of the territory of Songololo, towards Kinshasa. Due to its geostrategic position and the presence of cement companies, it saw its demography explode between 2003 and 2020. This demographic growth has led by corollary to the growth of its urban surface between 1979 and 2020. Unfortunately, this growth is is done spontaneously, beyond any form of state control, to the extent that the city has exceeded its administrative limits and encroached on rural areas, with dreadful repercussions on the environment and health. The methodology used consisted of circumscribing the old town, monitoring and mapping the spatio-temporal evolution of its urban agglomeration between 1979 and 2020 using geomatics techniques, including spatial analysis, the Information System Geographic and remote sensing. The results showed that the urban area of Kimpese increased from 2.17 Km2 in 1979 to 12.6 Km2 in 2020, representing an average annual growth of 0.25 Km2; and this is done mainly in the outskirts, despite their steep slopes.

Objective: The purpose of this review was to identify the epidemiology of, and develop standardized injury definitions for, acute injuries among recreational windsurfers. Methods: A literature search was conducted from the PubMed and Google Scholar databases through February 28, 2023, using relevant keywords with Boolean operators, such as "windsurfing" AND "epidemiology" AND "risk factors." Only peerreviewed, relevant windsurfing-related injury articles were included. Results: A wide range of acute injuries, from minor, moderate, severe, to catastrophic, were reported. Injury rates, frequency of anatomical distributions, existing and potential risk factors, the proposed standardization definitions of behaviour types, skill levels, general windsurfing-related injuries, and injury severity classifications and levels for windsurfing epidemiology were identified and tabled. Conclusions: There is inconsistency in the epidemiological methods and definitions of windsurfing research. The injury rates remain difficult to compare among the identified studies. Future in-depth windsurfing-related injury studies should focus on prospective designs using standardized injury definitions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RADIOCARBON dating , *UPLANDS , *POPULATION , *IRON Age - Abstract
This article presents 6637 radiocarbon dates from archaeological sites in southernmost Sweden, from 9000 cal bc to the present. Based on summed probability distributions (SPDs) of the calibrated radiocarbon dates, the authors consider long-term trends in settlement and human population. Most dates are from the fertile and densely populated plains of south-western Scania, but coastal lowlands and forested uplands are also represented, allowing for a discussion of the relationship between central and peripheral areas. The authors distinguish between different types of archaeological contexts and features and between different types of dated material, so as to better understand the processes behind population and settlement change. They highlight three periods and phenomena revealed by the SPDs: a strong population increase at the onset of the Neolithic (4000–3700 cal bc), followed by a sharp decline; a steady and long-lasting expansion from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman Iron Age (1500 cal bc–cal ad 200); and a decrease in the Nordic Late Iron Age (seventh century ad), particularly in recently colonized upland areas. The SPDs presented provide a new framework for archaeology in southern Sweden and offer an empirical basis for discussion of long-term trends in settlement and population development. DENTAL pathology , *SKULL fractures , *STATURE , *ANTHROPOMETRY , *DEFICIENCY diseases , *TUBERCULOSIS - Abstract
this work, the basic results of the anthropological analyses of the skeletal remains from the largely Avar period, but also late antique and bronze age dated archaeological site Bruckneudorf/Burgenland are presented. Out of more than 400 inhumations, 383 Avar period individuals could be assessed, including 205 adults and 178 children and juveniles. The skeletons are mostly well preserved. There are about a quarter more adult males than females buried at this site. The males had a mean body height of approx. 166 cm and the females of approx. 157 cm. The fracture frequencies at the postcranial bones are low, males are more often affected than females. Skull fractures are also rare, the signs of interpersonal violence are low, some males were affected by a decapitation. On some individuals, signs of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and brucellosis were visible. A low caries frequency was found, although the frequency of intravitam tooth loss and an increase in signs of deficiency disease at teeth, mainly at the age of five years, were obvious. A large part of the individuals over 40 years was affected from degenerative changes in the spine, nearly double the number of males than females. In total, the stress and strain signs in this group do not seem to be very high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Context: Chronic Pain Structures (CPSs) provide care for patients with the most complex and refractory chronic pain in France. In 2018, 245 CPSs were accredited by the Regional Health Agencies (ARS). Despite this significant territorial coverage, the CPSs are now under threat. Objective: The aim of this study is to obtain a snapshot of the care offered by the CPSs, by specifying both the characteristics of the CPSs and the demographics of the professionals practicing there. Methodology: The survey was conducted under the aegis of the SFETD (Société française d'étude et de traitement de la douleur) among all the CPSs accredited by the ARS. CPS managers were asked to complete an online questionnaire on the characteristics of the CPS and the demographics of the medical and nonmedical staff. Results: Of the 245 CPSs, 223 (91%) responded. Although the territorial coverage of the CPSs is respected, with a median of 0.59 pain doctors per 100,000 inhabitants in France, there is great heterogeneity in the distribution of full-time equivalents (FTEs) from one region to another, with a variation of a factor of 2.8 for doctors and a factor of 5 for psychologists and nurses. The least endowed regions are the Centre-Val de Loire region and the Grand Est region. Fifty-four percent of CPSs offer consultations for both cancer pain and chronic non-cancer pain. Only 6% of CPSs are dedicated to children's pain. The median waiting time is three months, with extremes of up to a year. A total of 835 physicians, representing 388 FTEs, work in the CPSs. Only 58% of the physicians are tenured; 18% work full-time and 43% work less than 0.2 FTE. The retirement of 177 physicians is expected within five years, representing 91 FTEs, or 24% of total medical FTEs. Conclusion: The sustainability of CPS in France is threatened in the next five years. It is urgent to act. Concrete measures are proposed by the SFETD to anticipate the announced disaster. - Abstract
The French Society of Young Radiation Oncologists (SFjRO), the National Union of Radiation Oncologists (SNRO) and the French Society of Oncological Radiotherapy (SFRO) aim to reconcile career opportunities and demographic needs in oncology. In 2021, 932 radiation oncologists (RO) are in regular activity in France, this represents an increase of more than 20% in ten years. Physician distribution is changing in public hospitals, cancer centers and private clinics. Currently one third of ROs works in each sector. In addition, fifteen percent of ROs have a mixed activity. In 2021, 180 young RO (trainees and residents) were questioned by SFjRO board about their training, internship, coaching and career guidance. An interactive communication was organized during the 32nd SFRO Meeting in 2021. It was an opportunity to bring the results of this study. More than 70% RO interviewed answered to the survey, for 55% among them, career choice was difficult. In order to help young ROs in their professional approach, three RO made an oral presentation during this session, about radiotherapy in public hospitals, private centers or with a mixed practice. The aim of this article is to summarize the highlights of the last SFjRO/SFRO session: expectations of young RO, career prospects and trends. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines materials challenges in Canadian libraries as compiled by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) with the intention of identifying demographic trends in patron challenge behaviour. By cross-referencing the CFLA data with five demographic fields from the 2016 Canadian Census of Population (median age, city size, educational attainment level, median income, and political representation), the study aims to determine whether challenges of a certain nature are more likely to occur in communities with certain demographic profiles. The study identifies twenty-two challenge categories derived from user complaints and three ideological alignments of challenges based on the political ideology standards set by moral foundations theory. Though the available sample is too small to draw any definitive conclusions, some strong trends were apparent. The most common challenge types--challenges to racist content and sexual content--are fairly consistent throughout demographic groupings, but notable correlations were found between demographic profiles and challenges related to LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and more) issues. Progressive-leaning communities were far more likely to challenge homophobic/transphobic materials while conservative-leaning communities challenged more LGBTQIA+-positive works. From an ideological standpoint, young communities tend to be the most progressive in their challenge behaviour, while communities with a low level of educational attainment tend to be the most conservative in their challenge behaviour. In 1933, the German government introduced the marriage loan for newlyweds, a policy aimed at increasing marriages and births as well as male employment, which entailed a work ban for the wife and sizeable credit deductions for children. This paper illustrates that the policy was rather ineffective based on a critical evaluation of the existing literature on the topic, how the policy was implemented in practice, as well as a correlation and interrupted time series analysis and consideration of the historical context of the period between 1925 and 1939. This result starkly contrasts to the substantial changes expected at the time of the introduction. In theory, only a small fraction of newlyweds was eligible for the loan. In practice, the development of marriages postintroduction significantly differed from the period prior to the policy, but causation is unclear. While births increased, this can be attributed to a combination of policies and the improved economic environment compared to the crisis years. The sharp decrease in unemployment probably resulted from the introduction of several targeted policies and embellishment of unemployment statistics.

This article introduces and comments on a presentation made by Antoine Laville, in 2001, in the framework of a scientific meeting about Alain Wisner's works. His presentation was entitled: "To which human being has work to be adapted? A question which remains relevant for ergonomists". The present article aims to enlighten three elements: sociodemographic context at the period when the paper was published, with an increase of diversity factors inside active population; institutional structuration of research on these issues in France, namely the setting up of the scientific network Creapt, offering new possibilities for lasting partnership between companies and research organisms; and several scientific, epistemological and ethical concerns which Laville had developed for a long time, and which he chose to elicit at that moment, with the prospect of integrating analysis of diversity into ergonomics, as an alternative to selection policies. - Abstract
A vast silvicultural experiment was set up in 1982 nearby the town of M'Baïki in the Central African Republic to monitor the recovery of tropical forests after disturbance. The M'Baïki experiment consists of ten 4-ha Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs) that were assigned to three silvicultural treatments in 1986 according to a random block design. In each plot, all trees with a girth at breast height greater than 30 cm were spatially located, numbered, measured, and determined botanically. Girth, mortality and newly recruited trees, were monitored almost annually over the 1982–2022 period with inventory campaigns for 35 years. The data were earlier used to fit growth and population models, to study the species composition dynamics, and the effect of silvicultural treatments on tree diversity and aboveground biomass. Here, we present new information on the forest stand structure dynamics and tree demography. The data released from this paper cover the three control plots and constitute a major contribution for further studies about the biodiversity of intact tropical forests.

- Abstract
The factors influencing depopulation and periurbanization in rural areas are investigated by selecting a homogeneous region with 191 municipalities. Long-term population changes are analyzed using regression models based on census data. The impact of initial population, proximity to large cities, highways, nuclear power plants, and altitude is assessed. The results indicate depopulation began in 1910, was significant between 1950 and 1981, and has increased again in the last decade, affecting localities of different sizes similarly. Periurbanization began in 1950, intensified until 2011, and has recently decreased. Proximity to transportation infrastructure has not been significant since 1970, and nuclear power plants also lack a significant impact.

- Abstract
In a 1922 conference, Louis Alexandre Taschereau, of noble descent and Prime Minister of Quebec, insisted that Canadian aristocracy still occupied at that moment the highest social rank. On the other hand, some historians claimed that aristocrats had declined in tandem with the Cession of New France in 1763 (Ouellet, 1966; Brunet, 1969; Séguin, 1970). In fact, it is undeniable that nobility metamorphosed as the pre-industrial period gradually made its way to the Industrial Era. In that respect, how did aristocracy evolved ? From the Cession of New France to the First World War, the present thesis aims to analyse the becoming of noble families of French descent who stayed in Canada. Indeed, this study focuses on their respective demographic and matrimonial background, as well as their career paths and their identification with their ancestral lineages. If the Cession required adaptation the second half of the 19th century constituted an even more significant shock as aristocracy lost its bearing. This came as a challenge to aristocrats who had to reinvent themselves in order to maintain their high social status. Many noble families progressively experienced a social shift over time and at various moments throughout different events. But all the studied themes converge toward a core of families who succeeded in retaining an elite position and maintaining local, regional and, sometimes national, and somewhat rarely, imperial authority. We observe that characteristics of the French regime persist within this restrictive subgroup, such as land ownership and the value of service. These aristocrats also adapted their career paths and choices of spouse. While aristocracy declined over the course of the 19th century, identity initiatives emerged among those who remained noble, claiming to belong to an aristocracy lineage, that often was on the verge of demographic extinction.

- Abstract
In response to the “Leave No One Behind" principle (the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), reliable estimate of the total number of citizens living in slums is urgently needed but not available for some of the most vulnerable communities. Not having a reliable estimate of the number of poor urban dwellers limits evidence-based decision-making for proper resource allocation in the fight against urban inequalities. From a geographical perspective, urban population distribution maps in many low- and middle-income cities are most often derived from outdated or unreliable census data disaggregated by coarse administrative units. Moreover, slum populations are presented as aggregated within bigger administrative areas, leading to a large diffuse in the estimates. Existing global and open population databases provide homogeneously disaggregated information (i.e. in a spatial grid), but they mostly rely on census data to generate their estimates, so they do not provide additional information on the slum population. While a few studies have focused on bottom-up geospatial models for slum population mapping using survey data, geospatial covariates, and earth observation imagery, there is still a significant gap in methodological approaches for producing precise estimates within slums. To address this issue, we designed a pilot experiment to explore new avenues. We conducted this study in the slums of Nairobi, where we collected in situ data together with slum dwellers using a novel data collection protocol. Our results show that the combination of satellite imagery with in situ data collected by citizen science paves the way for generalisable, gridded estimates of slum populations. Furthermore, we find that the urban physiognomy of slums and population distribution patterns are related, which allows for highlighting the diversity of such patterns using earth observation within and between slums of the same city., info:eu-repo/semantics/published

33. Unequal perspectives? Income inequality as a benchmark for support for European integration

- Abstract
Despite growing attention to income inequality in debates about European integration, our understanding of its effect on European Union support remains limited. Using European Social Survey data from 2002 to 2020, we analyse how income inequality and pro-redistribution attitudes shape diffuse and specific forms of support for the European Union. We find no direct effect of country-level income inequality, while individual support for redistribution has a negative effect on both. In line with benchmarking theory, inequality emerges as a contextual moderator: in unequal national settings, egalitarian citizens are comparatively more supportive of further integration than in more equal countries. This effect persists when we control for income position, suggesting an ideological rather than utilitarian basis for benchmarking European Union attitudes. We discuss implications in light of debates about a social Europe., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The populations with a founder effect have been extremely useful in identifying variants associated with rare diseases, as well as in better understanding the impact of demographi

- Abstract
The writings of Thomas Robert Malthus continue to resonate today, particularly An Essay on the Principle of Population which was published more than two centuries ago. Malthus Across Nations creates a fascinating picture of the circulation of his economic and demographic ideas across different countries, highlighting the reception of his works in a variety of nations and cultures. This unique book offers not only a fascinating piece of comparative analysis in the history of economic thought, but also places some of today's most pressing debates into an accurate historical perspective, thereby improving our understanding of them. Providing a complex and multi-faceted analysis of the reception and dissemination of the works of Malthus, this book examines how his approach was misunderstood and distorted throughout his lifetime and beyond. It illuminates the different ways in which groups of actors, including laymen, politicians and experts, have reacted to his work in specific historical and intellectual contexts, and with particular theoretical, political and moral concerns. Detailed breakdowns of the main controversies over his work are also explored. An insightful read for scholars studying economics and history of economic thought, this book guides readers from Malthus's original publications to their continuing impact today. This will also be a useful volume for ethics, political thought and intellectual history students. Contributors include: D. Andrews, J.L. Cardoso, D. Donnini Macciò, G. Faccarello, C. Gehrke, M. Context and background: The roast palm parklands remain one of the most striking elements of the Savannah region of Togo. Given the importance of this resource for the local population, knowledge of their diversity and demographic structure is necessary for better management of roast palm plant communities throughout the Savannah region of Togo. Goal and objectives: The study carried out in the region of Savannahs of Togo contributes to the sustainable management of agroforestry parklands in Togo. It aims at: (i) mapping of the spatial distribution of Borassus species (Borassus aethiopum and Borassus akeassi) and (ii) characterize the diversity and the demographic structure of roast palm parklands in the Savannah Region of Togo. Methodology: Forest inventories were done within roast palm agroforestry parklands within plots 50 m X 50 m. Based on these inventories, diversity and dendrometry characteristics of the target parklands determined. Mapping consisted of the spatialization of densities by the interpolation. Results: B. aethiopum is mostly represented than B. akeassii found which is found punctually in a few locations. Roast palms parkland diversity was estimated to 23 plant species belonging to 21 genera and 14 families. Three (3) roast palm parklands were discriminated: mixed parks, B. aethiopum parks, and B. akeassii parks. The most represented families are: the Arecaceae (61 %) and the Sapotaceae (13 %). There is the dominance of mesophanerophytes (76 %) and transition species, Guineo-Congolese/Sudano-Zambezian. B. aethiopum mean diameter is 47.91 ± 1.54 cm, with a basal area and density 6.98 ± 2.33 m2/ha and 29.33 ± 1.66 stems/ha respectively. B. akeassii mean diameter is about 42.45 ± 1.61 cm with a basal area and mean density 3.43 ± 1.77 m²/ha and 18.5 ± 1.66 stems/ha respectively. Both the two target species mean regeneration rate is 61.29 %. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although a previous generation of Western social scientists predicted polygamy's demise in African cities, this form of marriage has proven resilient in the face of rapid urban growth and sweeping social change. This article traces the various social forces underlying modern polygamy's resilience in Bamako, Mali, where one in four wives is in a polygamous marriage. Mustering data from ethnographic fieldwork and demographic surveys, it highlights three analytical categories and their relationship to marriage patterns: culture (including the Muslim religion), demography, and postcolonial law. It concludes that polygamy will remain a component of the marriage system in Bamako despite the disruptions stemming from urbanization and globalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban policies and city inhabitants behaviors are at the forefront of global environmental issues. We live indeed in an urbanizing world, and cities are responsible for approximately two third of global energy consumptions. How buildings are built, and how cities are organized are both key drivers of greenhouse gases emissions. Making them coherent with environmental constraints often lead to co-benefits with other urban issues such as economic competitiveness or social inclusiveness. This explains why cities are globally active concerning climate change, even if much still needs to be done.

Music is often described as having magical powers to enchant listeners, but it has an equally and often unremarked magical effect on performers and scholars contemplating music. North American music theory has done little to address music’s enchantments, preferring to frame its discourse around empiricism and objectivity. Since the 1990s various postmodern and post-structuralist perspectives have brought about changes of content – what music is considered – and methodology, including a consideration of music’s “magical” powers. These new perspectives have, in part, resulted in an increased diversity in the demographics of musicology, but there have not been changes of sufficient significance in either content or methodology in North American music theory and the demographics of music theory remain dominated by white, male practitioners. In this short essay, I propose two ways that music-theoretical practice can be transformed in order to overcome the “epistemic injustices” of past work in music theory. First, music-theoretical work should address the complicity of the scholar’s perspective, and second, it should recognize the authorial work of diverse creators. To exemplify the latter, I offer a short analysis of Eliza Brown’s The Body of the State (2017). The Body of the State (2017).

- Abstract
The 2008 financial crisis provides some useful lessons for understanding future challenges in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic. Knowledge of the share of gross domestic product contributing to health expenditure sheds light on the efficiency of health policies in the major countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
