Packaging represents the largest fraction of plastic waste in Europe. Currently, mechanical recycling schemes are mainly focused on the recovery of rigid packaging (like bottles), while for flexible packaging, also called films, recycling rates remain very low. Existing mechanical recycling technologies for these films are quite basic, especially in the case of complicated post-consumer flexible plastics (PCFP) waste, leading to regranulate qualities that are often subpar for renewed use in demanding film applications. In this study, the technical and economic value of an improved mechanical recycling process (additional sorting, hot washing, and improved extrusion) of PCFPs is investigated. The quality of the four types of resulting regranulates is evaluated for film and injection molding applications. The obtained Polyethylene-rich regranulates in blown films offer more flexibility (45-60%), higher ductility (27-55%), and enhanced tensile strength (5-51%), compared to the conventional mechanical recycling process. Likewise, for injection molded samples, they exhibit more flexibility (19-49%), enhanced ductility (7 to 20 times), and higher impact strength (1.8 to 3.8 times). An economic assessment is made between the obtained increased market value and the capital investment required. It is shown that the economic value can be increased by 5-38% through this improved recycling process. Overall, the study shows that it is possible to increase the mechanical recycling quality of PCFP in an economically viable way, thus opening the way for new application routes and overall increased recycling rates.

The double yield (DY) phenomenon observed in a wide variety of semi-crystalline polymers (SCP) adds difficulties in the material characterization. In this paper, a constitutive model, termed as explicit semi-crystalline polymer (ESCP) model, is proposed to study DY phenomenon as well as the rate- and temperature-dependent thermomechanical response below the glass transition temperature. The underlying yield kinetics due to the morphological changes of the spherulite micro-structure is represented by a rheological analogue described by a physically-based amorphous intermolecular resistance and a rate-independent crystalline interlamellar resistance. Independently-identified viscoelastic response and network resistance are also implemented to complete the model description. The activation and disclosure of the crystalline component depend on the saturated state of amorphous phase. The proposed model is validated against ex- perimental data obtained from different authors for three commonly used SCPs: nylon 101, LDPE and PA6. A straightforward parameter identification procedure, requiring a minimum number of calibration tests, is presented to illustrate the model usage. The thermomechanical-coupled analyses provide satisfactory predictions using simulated models of a cylinder compression and dogbone tensile tests at different rates, where the self-heating and thermal softening effects are naturally captured by the model.

Continuous catalytic cracking of polyethylene over a spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalyst was studied in a conical spouted bed reactor (CSBR) with fountain confiner and draft tube. The effect of temperature (475–600 °C) and space‐time (7–45 gcat min gHDPE −1) on product distribution was analyzed. The CSBR allows operating with continuous plastic feed without defluidization problems and is especially suitable for catalytic pyrolysis with high catalyst efficiency. Thus, high catalyst activity was observed, with waxes yield being negligible above 550 °C. The main product fraction obtained in the catalytic cracking was made up of C5−C11 hydrocarbons, with olefins being the main components. However, its yield decreased as temperature and residence time were increased, which was due to reactions involving cracking, hydrogen transfer, cyclization, and aromatization, leading to light hydrocarbons, paraffins, and aromatics. The proposed strategy is of great environmental relevance, as plastics are recycled using an industrial waste (spent FCC catalyst)., One man's trash: The use of FCC spent catalyst in a fountain confined spouted bed reactor demonstrates great potential for plastics valorization. A complete polymer conversion towards valuable products as light olefins and gasoline‐range hydrocarbons is obtained. This strategy is of great environmental interest as plastics are recycled using a waste catalyst.

The effect of heat treatment on the gas barrier of the polymer-coated board further coated with an Al 2 O 3 layer by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was studied. Heat treatment below the melting point of the polymer followed by quenching at room temperature was used for the polylactide-coated board [B(PLA)], while over-the-melting-point treatment was utilized for the low-density polyethylene-coated board [B(PE)] followed by quenching at room temperature or in liquid nitrogen. Heat treatment of B(PLA) and B(PE) followed by quenching at room temperature improved the water vapor barrier. However, because of the changes in the polymer morphology, quenching of B(PE) with liquid nitrogen impaired the same barrier. No improvement in oxygen barrier was observed explained by, e.g., the spherulitic structure of PLA and the discontinuities and possible short-chain amorphous material around the spherulites forming passages for oxygen molecules. This work emphasizes the importance of a homogeneous surface prior to the ALD growth Al 2 O 3 barrier layer.

Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most useful general purpose plastics. However, the poor transparency and brittleness of PP restricts its applications in the field of medical and personal care where silicone and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are presently used. This work concentrates on developing highly transparent elastomeric PP blends and also thermoplastic elastomer by blending isotactic polypropylene (I-PP) with styrene/ethylene-butylene/styrene (SEBS) triblock copolymer. PP/SEBS blend derived from high melt flow index (MFI) PP and high MFI SEBS exhibit remarkable transparency (haze value as low as 6%) along with good percentage of elongation and processability. The reduction in difference of refractive index (RI) between PP and SEBS has been observed by blending SEBS with PP. The wide angle X-ray diffraction studies show that there is significant reduction in the percentage crystallinity of PP by the addition of SEBS block copolymer. Temperature-dependent polarized light microscopy studies reveal the reduction in spherulites size by the addition of SEBS block copolymer. Transmission electron micrographs show that the SEBS polymer forms a fine lamellar structure throughout the PP matrix with phase inversion at higher SEBS concentration. Development of phase morphology, crystalline morphology, and crystallinity in different blends has been analyzed and microstructure-haze correlations have been developed. POLYM. ENG. International audience; The aim of this study is to develop an experimental method which provides relevant data about the rheological behavior of polymer melts in pressure-driven flows in microscale geometries. In order to get better description of the physics involved in such flows, numerical simulation with commercial and in-house softwares was implemented, especially with molecular dynamics constitutive models. Thus, a modular rheometrical slit die equipped with pressure and temperature transducers was designed and adapted to a capillary rheometer. Different gap dimensions between 50 mu m and 200 mu m are available. The measurements were performed with high density polyethylene and low density polyethylene. The device was assessed by comparing to usual rheometers. The wall slip was investigated according to Mooney's method. Simulations were conducted with MATLAB (R) by implementing the Doi-Edwards' tube model and the molecular stress function of Wagner to take into account the enhanced orientation of the molecules due to the very close vicinity of the die walls. The flow was also simulated with POLYFLOW (R). The pressure effect on the geometry and on the polymer material was investigated. Experimental results were compared to calculations in terms of pressure values. The conclusions somewhat modify the prospects for future studies of such flows.

[EN] Lipid oxidation is, together with microbial growth, the main cause of spoilage of a great variety of foods, such as nuts, fish, meats, whole milk powders, sauces and oils. It causes a loss of both sensorial and nutritional quality of foods and may even lead to the formation of toxic aldehydes. Some strategies that are commonly used to limit the extent of lipid oxidation of packaged foods are direct addition of antioxidants or packaging under modified atmospheres in which oxygen presence is limited. A novel alternative to these methods is antioxidant active packaging, whose main advantage is that it can provide sustained release of antioxidants during storage. This article reviews the latest advances in antioxidant active food packaging, with special emphasis on antioxidant release systems. Extrudate swell is a common phenomenon observed in the polymer extrusion industry. Accurate prediction of the dimensions of an extrudate is important for appropriate design of dies for profile extrusion applications. Prediction of extrudate swell has been challenging due to (i) difficulties associated with accurate representation of the constitutive behavior of polymer melts, and (ii) difficulties associated with the simulation of free surfaces, which requires special techniques in the traditionally used Eulerian framework. In a previous work we had argued that an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) based finite element formulation may have advantages in simulating free surface deformations such as in extrudate swell. In the present work we reinforce this argument by comparing our ALE simulations with experimental data on the extrudate swell of commercial grades of linear polyethylene (LLDPE) and branched polyethylene (LOPE). Rheological behavior of the polymers was characterized in shear and uniaxial extensional deformations, and the data was modeled using either the Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT) model or the eXtended Pom-Pom (XPP) model. Additionally, flow birefringence and pressure drop measurements were done using a 10:1 contraction-expansion (CE) slit geometry in a MultiPass Rheometer. Simulated pressure drop and contours of the principal stress difference were compared with experimental data and were found to match well. This provided an independent test for the accuracy of the ALE code and the constitutive equations for simulating a processing-like flow. The polymers were extruded from long (L/D=30) and short (L/D=10) capillaries dies at 190 degrees C. ALE simulations were performed for the same extrusion conditions and the simulated extrudate swell showed good agreement with the experimental data. Traditionally crab meat spoilage has been evaluated using sensory panels. A method was developed using solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (SPME–GC–MS) to examine the aroma profile of blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) for chemical indicators of spoilage. The chemicals found to correlate best with spoilage were trimethylamine (TMA), ammonia, and indole over a period of 7 days. In addition, chemicals previously not identified in the aroma profile of blue crab were tentatively detected. Scan mode of the mass spectrometer was used to qualitatively determine compounds extracted from the volatile profile of spoiling blue crab by the SPME fiber. Selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode of the mass spectrometer improved resolution, identified compounds at low concentrations, and allowed spoilage related compounds to be detected in one chromatographic run without sample heating. TMA increased linearly. A significant difference in TMA concentrations were found for day 0 and day 4 samples. Indole concentrations corresponded well with sensory and microbial evaluations, in early, mid, and highly spoiled crab meat samples. Published version

Recycled plastics are considered as materials with physical, mechanical and aesthetic properties worse than the virgin ones. In fact, this is true because degradation during lifetime and during the recycling operations changes the structure and the morphology of the polymers and then the final properties of the secondary material. Several “strategies” are under investigation, and in some cases also applied, in order to avoid further degradation during recycling and, if possible, to repair the macromolecules broken during lifetime and then to restore or to improve the initial properties. In this paper the more important techniques, already used in industry or under investigation, according to this philosophy are shortly reviewed.
