Objectives: This study investigates the psychological impact of COVID‐19 on burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients. It focuses on comparing post‐traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), post‐traumatic growth (PTG), and resilience between BMS patients and Controls. Methods: A total of 100 BMS patients and 100 Controls from five Italian centers participated in this observational cross‐sectional study. They completed several assessments, including the General Health Questionnaire, Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, National Stressful Events Survey Short Scale, Impact of Event Scale‐Revised, Post Traumatic Growth Inventory Short Form, and Connor‐Davidson Resilience Scale. Results: BMS patients had significantly higher stress, anxiety, and depression (DASS‐21 score) and post‐traumatic stress symptoms (IES‐R‐6 score), particularly in terms of intrusive thoughts. They showed lower post‐traumatic growth (PTGI‐SF score) compared to Controls. The resilience scale (CDRS‐10) was a key predictor of PTG in both groups, explaining a significant variance in PTGI‐SF scores. Conclusions: BMS patients experienced heightened post‐traumatic stress, stress, anxiety, and depression during the COVID‐19 pandemic, with reduced post‐traumatic growth. Chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis is a very rare condition, described as a non-suppurative, inflammatory disease of the bone and characterized by a proliferative endosteal reaction, which clinically reveals itself with cyclic pain of the jaw and swelling. We reported two clinical cases, where patients suffered recurrent swelling and pain at the mandible irradiating to the preauricular area, denying any previous trauma or significant medical history. Odontogenic causes were excluded. An initial treatment with antibiotics and NSAIDs temporarily relieved the symptoms without complete resolution, prompting further investigations. After a comprehensive array of diagnostic tools (X-rays, CT scans, scintigraphy, bone biopsy, serum markers), both patients were diagnosed with chronic diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis of the mandible. Bisphosphonates (clodronate and zolendronate) with different treatment schemes were used to treat the condition, until a full recovery from symptoms was reported. Bisphosphonates could therefore represent an effective option in managing this rare but impactful condition. The present study aims to assess the feasibility of implant rehabilitation in kidney-transplanted patients. Patients with kidney transplantation included in periodontal supportive care and at least one year of dialysis with mono- or partial edentulism were eligible for this study. Histomorphometric evaluation of the harvested bone was matched with radiological bone assessment. Implant stability was also monitored with resonance frequency analysis and insertion torque value. Fixed cemented prostheses have been delivered after conventional loading protocol. Supportive periodontal therapy has been administered. Eleven patients (9 males and 2 females) were included. The mean age was 58.1 ± 9.9 years. A total of 17 implants were inserted and analyzed. Mean ITV was 39.3 ± 23.8 Ncm. The mean primary stability (implant stability quotient) at T0 was 71.7 ± 10.5, whereas the mean secondary stability at T1 was 73.0 ± 7.3. The minimum follow-up was 62 months, with a maximum of 84 months (7 years) reached by 4 patients. Fourteen out of 15 implants were in function at a 5-year follow-up (survival rate: 93.3%). Two implants showed peri-implantitis. Seventeen bone samples were collected (13 in the mandible and 4 in the maxilla). The mean percentage of marrow spaces and lamellar bone was 41.6% and 58.4%, respectively. Class 3, according to Misch classification, was found as the mean value of radiological bone density. It can be concluded that implant-supported rehabilitation in kidney-transplanted patients is possible. Adequate periodontal maintenance allows implant rehabilitation in kidney-transplanted patients with long-term sufficient survival rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resin coating in implants rehabilitation cannot always be aesthetic, durable and comfortable for the patient mainly due to the limited dimensions of the final structure. Intraoral welding technique and computer-aided designed prosthetic shells may be a solution. This in vitro study evaluates the capacity of load and the weakest point of implant-supported provisional prosthesis using welded titanium framework. Twelve samples were produced to simulate an implant supported fixed prosthetic bridge. Two implants (Ankylos; Dentsply Sirona Implants; Germany) were inserted inside blocks of nanoceramic material produced with a stereolithographic 3D printer. A polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin shell was performed with CAD/CAM and relined on welded framework. Six samples were produced with the same procedure reducing resin thickness. The samples were subjected to fatigue test (6,500,000 cycles) using ElectroForce 3310 fatigue machine (t 1); subsequently a mechanical compression test using a universal Shimadzu AGS-X 10 machine (t 2). The samples were analyzed with a photographic and radiographic documentation at t 0, t 1 and t 2. The samples survived mechanical fatigue test without evidence of failure. The radiographic and photographic evaluation revealed the fracture of resin coating after the mechanical compression test. The samples with minimal resin thickness fractured first. Adequate assessment of the resin thickness is mandatory to improve the longevity of these rehabilitations. CAD-CAM digital prosthetic design allows us to optimize the thicknesses and the prosthetic shapes, allowing us to obtain good degrees of resistance even in the presence of reduced prosthetic spaces. Simple Summary: Several oral problems occurring during cancer treatment can lead to the discontinuation or interruption of the scheduled treatment, with a negative impact on patient's overall survival. Very few studies focused on patients' self-reported oral problems during chemotherapy treatment for solid tumors. Through the administration of a dedicated questionnaire, we aim at correlating the presence of oral complications to demographic and medical information. Metastatic disease represented a risk factor for the onset of oral mucositis and salivary gland hypofunction, while specific chemotherapy regimens increased the risk to develop a subjective reduction in the salivary flow and difficulty in swallowing. Most of the participants were informed by the oncologist about the possibility of oral problems arising during oncological therapies. It is of paramount importance to collect observational data on oral problems from the patients' perspective in order to plan information and prevention campaigns to inform patients about their possible occurrence by providing useful tools for prevention and management. PURPOSE: Oral problems in a group of oncological patients undergoing chemotherapy (CT) for solid tumors have been examined. Incidence and severity of patients' self-reported oral problems have been evaluated along their interaction with age, gender, tumor diagnosis and stage, presence of mestastasis, CT agent type, and number of CT cycle. We also analyzed the presence of paraesthesia and anaesthesia and their predisposing factors associated with clinical and treatment-related variables. METHODS: Patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire to evaluate the onset and the intensity of oral and perioral pain, oral mucositis, salivary gland hypofunction, dysgeusia, dysphagia, dysphonia, and sensitivity neuropathy (paraesthesia or dysaesthesia) since the last CT infusion. We also investigated which types of medications have possibly been used and who recommended it, as well as patients' degree of awareness about the possibility of oral problems arising during CT. RESULTS: We recruited 194 patients and obtained 491 questionnaires. We found that a metastatic disease was a risk factor for OM (OR 2.02, p = 0.026) and salivary gland hypofunction (OR 1.66, p = 0.042) and that platinum agents, compared to mitotic inhibitors, increased the risk of developing salivary gland hypofunction (OR 2.16, p = 0.013), dysphagia (OR 3.26, p = 0.001), and anaesthesia (OR 5.16, p = 0.041). Young age was a slight protective factor for most symptoms. The 80% of enrolled patients were informed by the oncologist about possible oral problems arising during CT. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlighted the importance of collecting observational data from the patients' perspective on oral problems arising during the routine oncology practice, across a range of solid tumors and CT regimens. The relevance of these findings focused on the key role of the multidisciplinary team in advising the patients on the possible occurrence of oral problems, also by recommending their management.
