Background Benin, a country eligible for Gavi support, changed the presentation of the 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13) from the single-dose vial (SDV) to the multi-dose vial (MDV). The present work aims to evaluate the process of making this decision as well as programmatic and logistic impacts. Methods WHO protocol for post-introduction evaluation (PIE) was used. Programmatic impact was evaluated by comparing PCV13 coverage and dropout rates with a comparator vaccine administered simultaneously over similar 6-month periods prior to and after the transition. This impact was also appreciated from observation of multi-dose vial management practices during immunization sessions. Logistic impact was measured from the analysis of storage capacities, waste management and vaccine losses. Results Decision to move to PCV13 MDV was taken at EPI level. Activities planned to support this switch were partially implemented. Impact on vaccination coverage and PCV13 dropout rates in relation with the transition to PCV13 MDV was not detected. The study found that 63% of the health staff surveyed knew and applied WHO's multidose vial policy (MDVP). Vaccines opened vials were found in 83% of health facilities visited. PCV13 MDV (37%) was one of the 3 main vaccines found with open vials in health facility refrigerators. Vaccination risky practices were observed during immunization sessions in 83% of health facilities. The main risky practice was the lack of indication of the date and hour of opening vials (56%). There was a reduction of the volume occupied by vaccines at central store by 47%. Net storage volume per fully immunized child (FIC) decreased from 69.5 to 41 m3. PCV13 MDV allows for 40% reduction in the amount of waste produced by vaccination. PCV13 open vial loss rate has increased from 3 to 7%. Conclusion Benin’s experience in transition to an MDV presentation of PCV13 reveals the need for better preparation and planning.

As representatives of a family of actors and theatre managers in the early nineteenth-century Paris, Pierre-Jacques Seveste (1773-1825), his wife and his sons built a kind of small empire while launching, from 1817 on, several small theatres in the suburbs of Paris (théâtres de la banlieue), promoting new forms of popular entertainment quickly named théâtre de boulevard (boulevard theatre). The Seveste enterprise, a shareholder company with the name Société des théâtres de la banlieue, had its own ‘company library’, a working tool that appears nowadays as a testimony of a quite neglected genre, popular theatre under and just after the Napoleonic era. A part of this library could be maintained as a whole and purchased by the National and university library of Strasbourg in 2017. The collection could already be presented at a former conference (Sarospatak 2019). The ‘Theatrum Libri’ conference was focused on the goals of the ‘collectors’, and tried to make out their purposes while bringing together the collection: did the Seveste consciously build what appears nowadays as a ‘theatre of the theatre’, a kind of encyclopaedia of popular culture?

Adults disadvantaged by poor socio-economic status (SES) are more severely affected by asthma compared to those with better SES. We aimed to determine whether the frequency of asthma exacerbations (AEx), as well as aspects related to AEx management, differed based on SES in patients treated with daily treatments.This study, part of the prospective observational cohort ASTRO-LAB, included French adult patients with persistent asthma. Patients were considered as low SES if they benefited from publicly funded special health insurance and/or were perceived as low SES by their general practitioner. AEx was defined as at least one of the following: asthma-related oral corticosteroid course, medical contact, hospitalization, and death. We examined associations between SES and AEx frequency, perceived triggering factors and type of medical contact after AEx.In our sample of 255 patients, 11.40% were considered as low SES. Patients with low SES did not report significantly more AEx than medium/high SES patients during one-year follow-up (0.79 versus 0.55, p = 0.38). The type of medical contact during AEx differed significantly between the two groups (p = 0.03): patients with medium/high SES consulted their general practitioner more frequently (OR = 2.23, 95% CI = 0.91-5.50, p = 0.08) and were less likely to visit an emergency department or be hospitalized (OR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.09-0.84, p = 0.02).AEx frequency did not differ significantly between low and medium/high SES patients, but differences were found in the management of AEx. Studies are needed to better understand the relation between precariousness and management of asthma.

Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the beat-to-beat variation in the time intervals between heart contractions. This phenomenon reflects physiological processes that are trained in many biofeedback applications. HRV is routinely monitored using an electrocardiograph (ECG) or photoplethysmograph (PPG), supplemented by a respirometer. This article explains the importance of inspecting raw signals, describes the effects of prescription medications and social drugs, identifies common sources of signal contamination, and recommends practical precautions to increase recording fidelity.

Kroes and Van de Poel (Problematizing the notion of social context of technology. In S. H. Christensen, B. Delahousse, & M. Meganck (Eds.), Engineering in context (pp. 61–74). Aarhus: Academica, 2009) maintain that distinguishing between technology and its social (intentional) context is impossible, because social phenomena are definitive (constitutive) for technology. This raises the problem of differentiating between the social processes that are internal (definitive) and those that are external (contextual) to technology. To explore this problem we distinguish instead between the core and the context of design as object and as process, and we apply them to a case study of the design and development of a new technology for sewage water treatment to find out whether these distinctions make sense in real life engineering practice. Despite the in abstracto plausibility of this distinction between core and context, our analysis reveals that its application may turn out to be very problematic in actual engineering practices. The same holds for characterizing particular design features as being the result of either internal (technological) or external (social) factors.
