Abstract

Along with the rapid and extensive advancements in the 3D printing field, a diverse range of uses for 3D printing have appeared in the spectrum of medical applications. Vat photopolymerization (VPP) stands out as one of the most extensively researched methods of 3D printing, with its main advantages being a high printing speed and the ability to produce high-resolution structures. A major challenge in using VPP 3D-printed materials in medicine is the general incompatibility of standard VPP resin mixtures with the requirements of biocompatibility and biofunctionality. Instead of developing completely new materials, an alternate approach to solving this problem involves adapting existing biomaterials. These materials are incompatible with VPP 3D printing in their pure form but can be adapted to the VPP chemistry and general process through the use of innovative mixtures and the addition of specific pre- and post-printing steps. This review's primary objective is to highlight biofunctional and biocompatible materials that have been adapted to VPP. We present and compare the suitability of these adapted materials to different medical applications and propose other biomaterials that could be further adapted to the VPP 3D printing process in order to fulfill patient-specific medical requirements. Abstract

This article presents the findings of a study on the mechanical behavior of zirconia infrastructures used in dental prostheses. The study compared different designs of zirconia copings and found that samples with modified copings exhibited higher flexural strength and were more rigid compared to samples with thinner copings. The authors suggest that incorporating modified zirconia copings could enhance the fracture resistance of zirconia infrastructures and provide better support for veneering ceramic. However, the study has limitations, such as a small sample size and the absence of statistical analysis. Abstract

Amidst the prevalence of aggressive bacterial infections that can impact both oral and systemic health following various dental and implant procedures, the search for alternative, high-performing and biocompatible materials has become a challenging pursuit. The need for such investigations is increasing owing to the fact that toxicological risks of cobalt–chromium (CoCr) alloys used in dentistry have become a part of the EU's new Medical Devices Regulations establishing that cobalt metal has been classified as carcinogenic, genotoxic and detrimental to reproduction. Within this context, this review proposes high entropy alloys (HEA) as potential alternatives and presents their characteristics and in vitro biological performance when used as a substrate or coating. Anatomical details of the oral cavity in relationship with prosthodontics and implant dentistry support the paper's motivation and presentation. The review highlights the innovative manufacturing procedures, microstructure and properties of both the bulk and coatings of BioHEA. It evaluates the performance of BioHEAs based on their complete characterization and assesses their suitability for novel applications in dentistry, serving as the primary objective of this manuscript. Abstract

This paper is a review focused on the capability of graphene oxide (GO) coatings in preventing peri-implantitis. Firstly, the paper establishes GO's place in the frame of carbonic materials and its role as a composite material in dentistry in the prevention of bacterial infections and in sustaining osseointegration. Secondly, the most relevant articles on GO as implant coatings and their associated shortcomings are presented and emphasizing is placed on the areas where more data is needed. The main chapters are devoted to the relationship between GO and biofilm formation on the implants and the surrounding periodontal tissue and we also attempt to evaluate GO's efficacy in the case of peri-implantitis. Our findings strongly indicate that GO is a promising material for mitigating the problems mentioned, but some answers remain to be answered through rigorous research before declaring it a real success. Abstract

The epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a transformation process mandatory for the local and distant progression of many malignant tumors, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play significant roles in cellular regeneration, programmed death, angiogenesis, and many other essential tissular functions, involved in the normal development and also in pathological processes, such as the EMT. This paper reviews the roles of MMPs in the EMT involved in HCC invasion, as well as the ancillary roles that MMP cross-activation and tissue inhibitors play in modulating this process. While gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 are the MMPs commonly cited in the EMT of HCC, MMPs belonging to other classes have been proven to be involved in this process, favoring not only invasion and metastasis (MMP-1, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-10, MMP-11, MMP-13, MMP-14, MMP-16, MMP-26, and MMP-28) but also angiogenesis (MMP-8 and MMP-10). There is also data suggesting that other MMPs with a suspected or demonstrated role in the EMT of other cancers may also have some degree of involvement in HCC. The auto- and cross-activation of MMPs may complicate this issue, as pinpointing the extent of implication of each MMP may be extremely difficult. The homeostasis between MMPs and their tissue inhibitors is essential in preventing tumor progression, and the disturbance of this stability is another entailed factor in the EMT of HCC, which is addressed herein.
