Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of coating of abutments with antimicrobial agents and their influence on the physicochemical and biologic properties of the coated materials. Materials and Methods: This work was registered in Open Science Framework (osf.io/6tkcp) and followed the PRISMA protocols. A search of two independent reviewers of articles published up to October 29, 2021, was performed in the Embase, PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus databases. Results: The databases found a total of 1,474 references. After excluding the duplicates, 1,050 remained. After reading the titles and abstracts and applying the inclusion criteria, 13 articles remained and were read in full. A total of 8 articles were included in this systematic review. Different antimicrobial agents have been used to coat abutments, including graphene oxide, polydopamine, titanium and zirconium nitride, lactoferrin, tetracycline, silver, and doxycycline with varied release times. Titanium-coated silver showed a better antimicrobial agent release time of up to 28 days. Chemical analysis confirmed the presence of antimicrobials on the surface after coating. Different pathogenic microorganisms, such as Streptococcus sanguinis, Streptococcus oralis, and Staphylococcus aureus, were inhibited when in contact with the coated surface. Conclusions: This review showed that there is still no consensus on which is the better antimicrobial agent and which coated materials have the better performance. However, the association of surface coating of abutments with antimicrobials is feasible and can benefit many patients, which can support their clinical use to favor the healing process and prevent infections that can lead to treatment failure with dental implants. Objectives Antimicrobials can select for antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. After treatment the active compound is excreted through urine and faeces. As some antimicrobials are chemically stable, recirculation of subinhibitory concentrations of antimicrobials may occur due to coprophagic behaviour of animals such as chickens. Methods The persistence of three antimicrobials over time and their potential effects on antimicrobial resistance were determined in four groups of broilers. Groups were left untreated (control) or were treated with amoxicillin (unstable), doxycycline or enrofloxacin (stable). Antimicrobials were extracted from the faecal samples and were measured by LC-MS/MS. We determined the resistome genotypically using shotgun metagenomics and phenotypically by using Escherichia coli as indicator microorganism. Results Up to 37 days after treatment, doxycycline and enrofloxacin had concentrations in faeces equal to or higher than the minimal selective concentration (MSC), in contrast to the amoxicillin treatment. The amoxicillin treatment showed a significant difference (P  ≤ 0.01 and P  ≤ 0.0001) in the genotypic resistance only directly after treatment. On the other hand, the doxycycline treatment showed approximately 52% increase in phenotypic resistance and a significant difference (P  ≤ 0.05 and P  ≤ 0.0001) in genotypic resistance throughout the trial. Furthermore, enrofloxacin treatment resulted in a complete non-WT E. coli population but the quantity of resistance genes was similar to the control group, likely because resistance is mediated by point mutations. Conclusions Based on our findings, we suggest that persistence of antimicrobials should be taken into consideration in the assessment of priority classification of antimicrobials in livestock. Aim: To quantify retinal ischemia following presumed rickettsial retinitis (RR). To compare outcomes between initial treatment with Doxycycline (Group 1) versus steroids (Group 2). Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with presumed RR was done. ImageJ software was used to obtain %area of ischemia on swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). Results: Eleven eyes of 8 patients belonged to Group1 and 6 eyes of 3 patients belonged to Group 2. The BCVA improved from logMAR 0.8 ∓ 0.7 to logMAR 0.06 ∓ 0.08 (p < 0.002) and central foveal thickness (CFT) changed from 479μ ∓ 341.3μ to 163.5μ ∓ 20.5μ (p < 0.005) after a median of 5 weeks in Group 1. In Group 2, BCVA improved from logMAR 1.03 ∓ 0.05 to logMAR 0.23 ∓ 0.23 (p < 0.004) and CFT changed from 286.5μ ∓ 158.8μ to 177.5μ ∓ 25.9μ (>0.05) following a mean of 11 weeks. Mean %area of ischemia was 4.6 ∓ 1.5 in Group 1 and 13.9 ∓ 4.1 in Group 2. Conclusion: Analysis of flow deficit on SS-OCTA confirms that treatment with Doxycycline in presumed RR results in less ischemia and quicker recovery than initial treatment with steroids. Objective To evaluate the influence of doxycycline on wound healing activity compared to control interventions, such as saline, chitosan, or other pharmacological agents. Materials and methods The following databases Medline (PubMed), Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for the relevant studies. A total of 94 records were screened after the removal of duplicates and 16 trials were included. Considering the similarity in outcome measures, data was pooled from nine trials using Comprehensive Meta Analysis (CMA) 3.0 software. The level of significance was p<0.05 and the certainty of the evidence was evaluated using GRADE pro GDT. Results A pooled analysis of nine trials assessing the wound healing in percentage (SMD 2.952, 95% CI:[0.597 to 5.307], p<0.014) significantly favoured doxycycline over the control agents. In the SYRCLE tool, four out of nine criteria displayed a low risk of bias in more than 50% of the included studies (more than 8 studies). This, along with low/unclear risk of bias, minimised imprecision and indirectness in the included trials, leading to high certainty of evidence. Conclusion Doxycycline shows notable advantages in wound healing compared to placebos or other agents, but replicability in clinical settings is necessary. Tribocatalysis is an emerging advanced oxidation process that utilizes the triboelectric effect, based on friction between dissimilar materials to produce charges that can initiate various catalytic reactions. In this study, pure and rare-earth-modified ZnO powders (La2O3, Eu2O3, 2 mol %) were demonstrated as efficient tribocatalysts for the removal of the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline (DC). While the pure ZnO samples achieved 49% DC removal within 24 h at a stirring rate of 100 rpm, the addition of Eu2O3 increased the removal efficiency to 67%, and La2O3-modified ZnO powder exhibited the highest removal efficiency, reaching 80% at the same stirring rate. Additionally, increasing the stirring rate to 300 and 500 rpm led to 100% DC removal in the ZnO/La case within 18 h, with the pronounced effect of the stirring rate confirming the tribocatalytic effect. All tribocatalysts exhibited excellent recycling properties, with less than a 3% loss of activity over three cycles. Furthermore, a scavenger assay confirmed the importance of superoxide radical generation for the overall reaction rate. The results of this investigation indicate that the rare-earth-modified ZnO tribocatalysts can effectively utilize mechanical energy to decompose pollutants in contaminated water. Simple Summary: Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in many species. Prior to the use of any antibacterial agent in veterinary medicine, pharmacokinetic studies in the target species are required to determine an optimal dosing regimen to prevent the selection of resistant bacteria and to ensure therapeutic success. To date, information on the pharmacokinetics of doxycycline in lactating goats is very scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the disposition kinetics and the excretion in milk of doxycycline after intravenous and intramuscular administration in dairy goats. Volumes of distribution were found to be medium, which suggests a moderate distribution of this antibiotic in tissues. After intramuscular administration, all goats developed lameness, which resolved 24–48 h post-administration. The bioavailability of doxycycline after IM injection was relatively low. Doxycycline rapidly crossed the blood–milk barrier, but exposure to the antimicrobial and the concentrations reached in milk were lower than those obtained in plasma. Therefore, doxycycline IM could be useful for infections by highly susceptible bacteria in the mammary gland of goats. Doxycycline is a second-generation tetracycline, marketed in different species for treating infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Little information is available on the pharmacokinetics of doxycycline in lactating goats. The objective of this study was to establish the disposition kinetics of doxycycline after parenteral administration (intravenous and intramuscular) in dairy goats and its elimination in milk. A cross-over model was designed (n = 6). Doxycycline was dosed at 5 mg/kg for intravenous administration and 20 mg/kg for extravascular administrations. Noncompartmental pharmacokinetic methods were used to calculate plasma concentration–time data. The Vz value suggests a moderate distribution of this antibiotic in goats, with a value of 0.85 L/kg. A low bioavailability (F = 45.60%) of doxycycline following an intramuscular injection was observed, with all animals exhibiting signs of lameness. Doxycycline rapidly crossed the blood–milk barrier, but exposure to the antimicrobial and the concentrations reached in milk were lower than those obtained in plasma. Although PK/PD ratios may be low with the pharmacokinetic data obtained with this formulation of doxycycline, at this dose and route of administration, doxycycline after IM administration could be useful for infections by moderate or highly susceptible bacteria in the mammary gland of goats. However, it may be necessary to test different doses of doxycycline or other routes of administration to achieve better surrogate markers and to establish repeated dosing regimens and clinical efficacy. Background Methods Results Conclusions Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory disease, and doxycycline is a widely recommended treatment for it due to its anti‐inflammatory action. Oral isotretinoin reduces sebaceous gland activity and modulates toll‐like receptors, reducing inflammation. Our aim was to investigate the effect of these two drugs on the expression of cutaneous immunohistochemical biomarkers related to etiopathogenic factors involved in rosacea.We conducted a randomized, comparative, and evaluator‐blinded trial, including 40 participants with moderate and severe papulopustular and ocular rosacea. Participants were treated with doxycycline (DOXY) 100 mg or isotretinoin (ISO) 0.3 mg/kg daily. Immunohistochemistry at baseline and after 4 months was used to demonstrate the expression of the biomarker on the affected skin.The following changes were detected: a reduction in the vessel count after using VEGF with DOXY (P = 0.010); a decrease in VEGF intensity with ISO (P < 0.001) and DOXY (P = 0.020); a reduction of nitric oxide synthase enzyme with both drugs in the inflammatory infiltrate (ISO P < 0.001; DOXY P = 0.003); however, only with ISO was there a significant (P = 0.030) decrease at the level of the sebaceous glands, indicating a reduction of nitric oxide synthesis; a reduction of TRPV‐1 expression at the level of the sebaceous glands was observed only with DOXY (P = 0.041); a decrease of cathelicidin LL37 expression, a key antimicrobial peptide in the etiopathogenesis of rosacea, was noted with both drugs, although at the level of sebaceous glands, only with DOXY (P = 0.007).Oral isotretinoin and doxycycline have modified the expression of cutaneous biomarkers related to rosacea etiopathogenesis, demonstrating their role in controlling inflammatory and vascular processes. Objectives: Scrub typhus is the most common rickettsial disease in India, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted by chigger mites. Previously prevalent in South India, a resurgence of scrub typhus cases has recently affected Eastern India. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and describe the clinicolaboratory profile of scrub typhus in paediatric patients (1-12 years old) living in Eastern India. Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted from January to December 2019 at the Dr B C Roy Post Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences, Kolkata, India. All acute undifferentiated cases of febrile illness, in patients aged between 1-12 years, were tested using scrub typhus serology by ELISA. Demographic details, clinical features, laboratory findings, complications and treatment outcomes of these scrub typhus patients were extracted and analysed. Results: Out of 1,473 patients with acute febrile illness, 67 (4.5%) children were diagnosed with scrub typhus. The mean age of the selected patients was 5.22 ± 3.05 years, and the majority (64.2%) had been running a fever since the preceding 7-14 days. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting (43.3%) and abdominal pain (32.8%) were most frequently observed. Major clinical signs of scrub typhus were hepatomegaly (41.8%) and splenomegaly (31.3%). Complications were observed in 74.6% of patients, with thrombocytopenia (40.3%) and meningoencephalitis (29.9%) occurring more frequently. The case fatality rate of the study sample was 1.5%. Conclusion: Classical eschar was absent in three-fourth of the studied patients. Hence, this study advocates laboratory scrub typhus tests for all suspected cases in the endemic region (Eastern India). Parkinson's disease (PD) is a second most common neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the selective and progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta. Rotenone is a neurotoxin which selectively degenerate dopaminergic neurons in striatum, leading to cause PD like symptoms. Rotenone was administered at a dose of 1.5 mg/kg, i.p. from day 1 to day 40. Treatment with doxycycline (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o), tocopherol (5 mg and 10 mg/kg, p.o) alone, doxycycline (50 mg/kg, p.o) in combination with tocopherol (10 mg/kg, p.o), and ropinirole (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) was given for 40 days 1 h prior to administration of rotenone. All behavioral parameters were analyzed on weekly basis. On day 41, animals were sacrificed and the striatum region was isolated for neurotransmitters estimation (dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, GABA and glutamate), biochemical analysis (GSH, nitrite, LPO, mitochondrial complexes I and IV), inflammatory markers estimation (IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α) and activity of MAO-A, MAO-B. Doxycycline and tocopherol in combination significantly attenuated behavioral, neurotransmitters and biochemical alterations induced by rotenone in experimental rats as compared to alone treatment with DOX and TOCO. Similarly, DOX and TOCO combination significantly reduced the level of inflammatory markers, prevented the biochemical changes, decreased MAO-A and MAO-B and improved complex-I, complex-IV, cAMP levels significantly. The current study revealed that a combination of doxycycline with tocopherol contributed to the prevention of PD like symptoms in rats by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, MAO inhibitory and neuromodulatory mechanisms. Purpose: To compare the effects of doxycycline (DOX) and conventional management in patients with refractory chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Methods: Six databases were searched to September 2023. We retrieved studies that compared improvements in refractory chronic sinusitis-related symptoms between DOX-treated and control groups. Results: DOX significantly reduced the Lund-Kennedy (LK) score [− 0.3670 (range − 0.6173; − 0.1166); I2 = 92.8%], the nasal polyposis score [− 0.9484 (− 1.2287; − 0.6680); I2 = 92.5%], the patient-reported Sinonasal Outcome Test (SNOT) score [− 0.3141 (− 0.4622; − 0.1660); I2 = 91.2%], and the nasal obstruction score [− 0.1813 (− 0.3382; − 0.0243); I2 = 86.2%]. On subgroup analyses by the measurement timepoints, the extent of nasal polyposis was significantly lower in the DOX group during treatment, at the end of treatment, and 4 and 8 weeks later. The LK scores also indicated improvements during treatment and at the end of treatment. The SNOT score tended to decrease with time in the treatment group. Nasal obstruction symptoms improved during treatment and 4 weeks later. Objectives: Bartonella spp., renowned for cat-scratch disease, has limited reports of dissemination. Tissue and blood cultures have limitations in detecting this fastidious pathogen. Molecular testing (polymerase chain reaction, PCR) and cell-free DNA have provided an avenue for diagnoses. This retrospective observational multicenter study describes the incidence of disseminated Bartonella spp. and treatment-related outcomes. Methods: Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of bartonellosis via diagnosis code, serology testing of blood, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, 16/18S tests of blood or tissue, cultures of blood or tissue, or cell-free DNA of blood or tissue from January 1, 2014, through September 1, 2021. Exclusions were patients who did not receive treatment, insufficient data on treatment course, absence of dissemination, or retinitis as dissemination. Results: Patients were primarily male (n = 25, 61.0%), white (n = 28, 68.3%), with mean age of 50 years (SD 14.4), and mean Charlson comorbidity index of 3.5 (SD 2.1). Diagnosis was primarily by serology (n = 34, 82.9%), with Bartonella henselae (n = 40, 97.6%) as the causative pathogen. Treatment was principally doxycycline with rifampin (n = 17, 41.5%). Treatment failure occurred in 16 (39.0%) patients, due to escalation of therapy during treatment (n = 5, 31.3%) or discontinuation of therapy due to an adverse event or tolerability (n = 5, 31.3%). Conclusions: In conclusion, this is the largest United States-based cohort of disseminated Bartonella spp. infections to date with a reported 39% treatment failure. Motopsin, a serine protease encoded by PRSS12, is secreted by neuronal cells into the synaptic clefts in an activity-dependent manner, where it induces synaptogenesis by modulating Na+/K+-ATPase activity. In humans, motopsin deficiency leads to severe intellectual disability and, in mice, it disturbs spatial memory and social behavior. In this study, we investigated mice that overexpressed motopsin in the forebrain using the Tet-Off system (DTG-OE mice). The elevated agrin cleavage or the reduced Na+/K+-ATPase activity was not detected. However, motopsin overexpression led to a reduction in spine density in hippocampal CA1 basal dendrites. While motopsin overexpression decreased the ratio of mature mushroom spines in the DG, it increased the ratio of immature thin spines in CA1 apical dendrites. Female DTG-OE mice showed elevated locomotor activity in their home cages. DTG-OE mice showed aberrant behaviors, such as delayed latency to the target hole in the Barnes maze test and prolonged duration of sniffing objects in the novel object recognition test (NOR), although they retained memory comparable to that of TRE-motopsin littermates, which normally express motopsin. After NOR, c-Fos-positive cells increased in the dentate gyrus (DG) of DTG-OE mice compared with that of DTG-SO littermates, in which motopsin overexpression was suppressed by the administration of doxycycline, and TRE-motopsin littermates. Notably, the numbers of doublecortin- and 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine-labeled cells significantly increased in the DG of DTG-OE mice, suggesting increased adult neurogenesis. The 3D nanopatterned silica shells of diatoms have gained attention as drug delivery vehicles because of their high porosity, extensive surface area, and compatibility with living organisms. Tooth extraction may result in various complications, including impaired blood clotting, desiccation of the root canal, and infection. Therapeutic sponges that possess multiple properties, such as the ability to stop bleeding and kill bacteria, provide numerous advantages for the healing of the area where a tooth has been removed. This study involved the fabrication of a composite material with antibacterial and hemostatic properties for dental extraction sponges. We achieved this by utilizing the porous nature and hemostatic capabilities of diatom biosilica. The antibiotic used was doxycycline. The gelatin-based diatom biosilica composite with antibiotics had the ability to prevent bleeding and release the antibiotic over a longer time compared to gelatin sponge. Mania is associated with disturbed dopaminergic transmission in frontotemporal regions. D-amphetamine (AMPH) causes increased extracellular DA levels, considered an acknowledged mania model in rodents. Doxycycline (DOXY) is a second-generation tetracycline with promising neuroprotective properties. Here, we tested the hypothesis that DOXY alone or combined with Lithium (Li) could reverse AMPH-induced mania-like behavioral alterations in mice by the modulation of monoamine levels in brain areas related to mood regulation, as well as cytoprotective and antioxidant effects in hippocampal neurons. Male Swiss mice received AMPH or saline intraperitoneal (IP) injections for 14 days. Between days 8–14, mice receive further IP doses of DOXY, Li, or their combination. For in vitro studies, we exposed hippocampal neurons to DOXY in the presence or absence of AMPH. DOXY alone or combined with Li reversed AMPH-induced risk-taking behavior and hyperlocomotion. DOXY also reversed AMPH-induced hippocampal and striatal hyperdopaminergia. In AMPH-exposed hippocampal neurons, DOXY alone and combined with Li presented cytoprotective and antioxidant effects, while DOXY+Li also increased the expression of phospho-Ser133-CREB. Our results add novel evidence for DOXY's ability to reverse mania-like features while revealing that antidopaminergic activity in some brain areas, such as the hippocampus and striatum, as well as hippocampal cytoprotective effects may account for this drug's antimanic action. This study provides additional rationale for designing clinical trials investigating its potential as a mood stabilizer agent. Doxycycline combined with Lithium reversed mania-like features induced by D-amphetamine (AMPH), notably risk-taking and vigor-like behaviors and hyperdopaminergic state in mice brain. This combination protected hippocampal neurons in vitro from increased oxidative damage and cytotoxicity. The nitrogen-doped activated carbon (NAC) with high specific area (3140.76 m2·g− 1) derived from pomelo peel was prepared using hydrothermal carbonization, nitrogen doping and KOH activation method for the effective removal of Doxycycline (DOX) from aqueous solution. NAC showed exceptional adsorption efficacy for DOX than non-doped activated carbon (AC), which was attributed to the rich N-containing functional groups on the NAC surface and well-developed pore structure. The adsorption equilibrium data of DOX on NAC was fitted well to the Sips isotherm model and the adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic and randomness-increasing. The Elovich kinetic model could better describe the adsorption process of DOX. The adsorption mechanisms of DOX onto NAC could be attributed to the hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction, hydrophobic effect and electrostatic interaction. Besides, the N-doping enhanced the adsorption performance of NAC. The maximum saturated adsorption capacity of NAC was 1559.35 mg·g− 1 at 298 K, indicating that the NAC could be a promising adsorbent for removing Doxycycline from wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present work, ZnO/g-C3N4/biochar was prepared, and it was used for visible-light driven photocatalytic degradation of some colorants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, methyl orange) and some antibiotics (doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, amoxicilline). Biochar was prepared by pyrolysing Phragmites australis biomass. The ZnO/g-C3N4/biochar composite was synthesized with the alkaline hydrolysis method. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transition electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray/elemental mapping, ultraviolet-visible-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that ZnO nanoparticles with a large surface area are highly dispersed on the g-C3N4 particle surface and biochar. The composite exhibits superior photocatalytic degradation ability toward doxycycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the tetracycline compared with individual components (ZnO or g-C3N4) and satisfies stability after six treatment cycles. The kinetics and degradation mechanisms of doxycyline were also addressed. In addition, the present catalyst also exhibits the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, rhodamine B, methyl orange, ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin in visible-light regions. Brassica oleracea L is low in carbohydrates and fiber, making it ideal for low‐carb diets. But they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients. The present article investigated the antimicrobial effect of B. oleracea extract (white and broccoli) (BOE‐WB) on Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative strains and its resistance to doxycycline. BOE‐WB was used as the soaking method. It was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS), high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and 2,2‐Diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) methods. The samples were prepared with three concentrations. It used Mueller Hinton Agar culture medium of fresh bacteria. It was incubated for 24 h in a 37°C incubator. It identified 33 compounds. For BOE‐W, 77% of the compounds are oxygenated, while for BOE‐B, this percentage is 79%. For BOE‐B, 79% had oxygenated compounds.
