The article reports a meta-analysis of 58 peer-reviewed studies investigating on dorsoventral hyperflexion of the neck in horses, a practice under substantial public and scientific scrutiny for the past two decades. The following databases were last searched on 28.05.2023: CAB, Google Scholar, Web of Science, NAL/Agricola, PubMed and ScienceDirect. After evaluating the conclusions of each study, we performed statistical analyses to establish a consensus on welfare and performance (performance marks, kinematics and musculoskeletal) outcomes in horses performing with a hyperflexed head and neck posture (HNP). The analysis revealed that a significant majority of the articles (75% of n = 36; Z = 3.00; P>|Z|=0.0027) expressed concerns about the welfare of horses working in this posture. Parameters such as dressage training level, prior experience, duration, and method of achieving the hyperflexed posture did not influence welfare concern conclusions significantly (P > 0.1). Therefore, it appears that the practice impairs welfare regardless of how it is imposed. A concurrent assessment of the weight of evidence for performance benefits showed inconclusive results: approximately one-quarter of the studies showed benefits and one-quarter detrimental effects, while the largest proportion (44%) showed no significant effect on performance. Simple Summary: Horse sports are popular worldwide, providing spectator enjoyment, benefiting human health, and contributing substantially to national economies. Training and management practices used to care for sporthorses are generally based on tradition rather than science; this combined with the high-risk nature of equestrian activities led to the public questioning if sporthorse health and welfare are being compromised. To understand better how sporthorses are being managed, experts, actively involved with national and international horse sports (dressage, showjumping, and eventing) were consulted across four rounds of a Delphi study. This approach allowed participants to interact to reach a point where everyone agreed on core areas (or domains) that they felt were essential to sporthorse management. Five areas were rated as essential: training management, competition management, young horse management, health status and veterinary management, and the horse–human relationship. Stable and environmental management, and welfare assessment were rated as important but not essential, as most experts felt that these areas were already managed well. Experts called for increased education and research to support riders, trainers, and federations. A welfare charter and evidence-based guidelines to inform management practices were advised to ensure sporthorses have a good life and to safeguard the future of equestrian sports. The public is increasingly questioning equestrianism's social license to operate. While the focus historically centered on horseracing, increased scrutiny is now being placed on how dressage, showjumping, and eventing are addressing equine management and welfare concerns. Nominated equestrian federation and equestrian organization experts (n = 104) directly involved in international and/or national-level horse sports took part in a four-stage, iterative Delphi to obtain consensus on what factors should be considered essential to manage sporthorse health and welfare. Five core domains were agreed as essential: training management, competition management, young horse management, health status and veterinary management, and the horse–human relationship. Two further domains: stable and environmental management, and welfare assessment were rated as important but not essential, as most respondents felt that these areas were already managed well. Participants felt increased education and guidance combined with further policy development and regulation are needed to support stakeholders to optimize sporthorse management. An appetite to engage with research to generate evidence that promotes sporthorse welfare was evident. The development of a sporthorse welfare charter and evidence-based guidelines to inform the management and monitoring of sporthorses' health and welfare are recommended to provide horses with a good life and to safeguard the future of equestrian sports. Effective warm-up (WU) prior to exercise can increase performance and decrease injury risk. Little is known about how riders design and implement WU routines in training and competition. A two-phase study aimed to understand show-jumper and dressage rider decision-making when selecting WU routines during flatwork sessions at home. An initial survey identified the rider's perception of warm-up use and decision-making. Then, ten riders competing at intermediate levels in dressage (DR) (n = 7: 39 warm-ups) and show-jumping (SJ) (n = 3: 22 warm-ups) videoed their horses' WU; duration, gaits, transitions, and specific movements were recorded by a single observer. A post-warm-up form was completed by riders (DR: 4; SJ: 2; total WU = 44) to assess riders' memory and perception of their warm-up and gain information on external temperature, and horse/rider age. Rider WU profiles were formulated and differences were assessed through a series of Friedmans and Kruskal-Wallis analyses. Riders warmed up for a total of 24 mins ± 7.1 mins (DR: 22 mins 3 secs ± 6 mins; SJ 27 mins, 29 secs ± 8 mins). Riders spent the most time in walk (DR: 48.3%; SJ: 56.4%). Riders (88%), who recorded > 3 WUs, WU sessions significantly differed over time (p < 0.03). Out of the 44 WU analyzed, riders accurately recalled 13.6% of the routines. No significant differences in total WU duration or total time spent warming up in walk were found between temperatures < 5°C and > 30°C even though riders said they adapted their warm-up to the weather during stage 1 of this study. Warm-ups at home seem to be rider and horse-dependent but are not discipline or climate-specific when preparing for a flatwork session at home.

Simple Summary: Conformation assessment is the basis for the selection of horses for a specific sport. Traditional 100-point judging systems, linear scoring and basic measurements are simultaneously used in Poland for evaluation of the same warmblood sport horses. This study aimed to compare traditional 100-point judging systems and linear profiling and to find characteristic traits of specific sport types by analyzing the differences between warmblood mares that are qualified as dressage vs. jumping. The research showed that warmblood mares classified as different types varied in a few linear conformation traits, most significantly in the position of the shoulder, line of the loins or shape of the croup. Analyses of linear movement traits showed that dressage warmblood mares moved better in walking and more balanced canter than jumping ones. These differences were not evident in the overall 100-point system. Both point-scaling systems were correlated only between the same named traits—type, movement and gaits. Finding detailed, measured, objective characteristics for various sport types is important for breeding and judging. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of factors on the results of 100-point judging systems, linear scoring and basic measurements, as well as differences between systems for dressage and jumping warmblood mares. The research covered official data on 1547 warmblood mares. Analysis of variance and phenotypic correlations (Pearson and partial) were used. The analysis showed that sport type significantly influenced 1/3 of biometric measurements, 2/9 traits on the 100-point system and 7/37 of linear scored traits. The influence of horse type evaluation is more significant in linear scoring than in the 100-point evaluation, which provides an argument for using the first system in breeding. In the linear evaluation for warmblood mares grouped as jumping or dressage, the most significant differences (p < 0.001) were noted between the traits of shoulder position, line of the loins and shape of the croup. In the point-based evaluation, differences (p < 0.05) were found in forelimbs and walking, as well as chest circumference in basic measurements. None of the traits in the two evaluation systems is identical to any other (r > 0.8). The comparison of systems showed meaningful correlations only between general traits. The differences between sport types of warmblood mares were smaller than expected. More objective traits should be discovered to increase accuracy in discriminating between horse types. Simple Summary: Most aesthetic sports where judges subjectively rate performances can suffer from issues like systematic errors due to biases. Equestrian dressage is defined through the intricate interaction between horse and rider. Assessing these interactions can be particularly complex, often exceeding human processing capabilities. The study focuses on whether the current dressage system predisposes international judges to using biases, and inadvertently favours certain horse-rider combinations. The study examined 510 judging scores, gathered from seven elite-level dressage competitions held between May 2022 and April 2023. The effect of different factors, such as whether riders competed in their home country, if they had the same nationality as the judges, their starting order during the competition, and how they were ranked according to previous performances were analysed. Results showed that all these factors influence the final dressage results. In order to assist judges in providing objective, transparent scores, a clear evidence-based set of judging guidelines should be developed, which would prevent judges from having to resort to cognitive short cuts. That way, the complexity of judging is reduced, making scores more objective, transparent and fair. Sport performances judged subjectively often suffer from systematic errors due to biases, with the sport of equestrian dressage being no exception. This study examines whether international dressage judges display systematic errors while evaluating elite horse-rider combinations. Data from seven 5* Grand Prix dressage events between May 2022 and April 2023 were analyzed (510 judges' scores) using Multivariable Linear Regression Analysis. Five predictor variables—Home, Same Nationality, Compatriot, FEI Ranking and Starting Order—were studied in relation to Total Dressage Score (TS). The model accounted for 44.1% of TS variance; FEI Ranking, Starting Order, Compatriot, Same Nationality, and Home were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Judges exhibited nationalistic and patriotism-by-proxy biases, awarding significantly higher scores to riders from their countries (p < 0.001). FEI Ranking and Starting Order also influenced scores significantly (p < 0.001). These biases, combined, created a cascade effect benefiting a specific group of riders. Simple Summary: In the sport of Para dressage, the combined performance of the Para athlete and the horse is judged subjectively. To provide a level playing field for athletes with a wide range of impairments, Para dressage athletes are classified based on the degree to which their impairment impacts sports performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of impairment on objective performance measures in Para athletes as a step towards developing an evidence-based classification system. Two groups of athletes comprising twenty-one elite Para athletes (classified grades I to V) and eleven non-disabled athletes (competing at Prix St. Georges or Grand Prix) were measured while performing a 2 min custom dressage test on a riding simulator and clinically assessed using a battery of impairment assessment tools. Statistical analysis considered the extent to which performance could be predicted from impairment measures. Impairment assessment tools related to sitting function could predict the impact of impairment on performance in Para athletes but not in non-disabled athletes. These findings provide evidence of sport-specific impairment assessments that could be used to enhance athlete classification. These findings pave the way for further studies using similar approaches to enhance the objectivity of classification between grades. This study follows a previously defined framework to investigate the impact of impairment on performance in Para dressage athletes. Twenty-one elite Para dressage athletes (grades I to V) and eleven non-disabled dressage athletes (competing at Prix St. Georges or Grand Prix) participated. Data were collected in two phases: performing a two minute custom dressage test on a riding simulator while kinematic data were synchronously collected using inertial measurement units (2000 Hz) and optical motion capture (100 Hz), and clinically assessed using a battery of impairment assessment tools administered by qualified therapists. Impairment and performance measures were compared between Para and non-disabled athletes. Significant differences between athlete groups were found for all impairment measures and two performance measures: simulator trunk harmonics (p = 0.027) and athlete trunk dynamic symmetry (p < 0.001). Impairment assessments of sitting function and muscle tone could predict 19 to 35% of the impact of impairment on performance in Para athletes but not in non-disabled athletes. These findings provide the basis for a robust, scientific evidence base, which can be used to aid in the refinement of the current classification system for Para dressage, to ensure that it is in line with the International Paralympic Committee's mandate for evidence-based systems of classification. Simple Summary: Dressage is an Olympic equestrian sport in which scores are awarded primarily for the technical correctness of a horse's performance. This study focuses on a single score awarded after the completion of a performance called the general impression score that is based on the gaits of the horse, the position of the rider, the effectiveness of the rider's aids, and the harmony between the horse and rider. Twenty dressage horses and their riders performed a pattern from which walk, trot and canter, and transitions from extended to collected trots were analyzed based on data from inertial measurement units that measured three-dimensional accelerations and rotations of the horse's trunk, the rider's pelvis, and the rider's trunk. The selected movements were observed on video and scored by two or three high-ranking dressage judges. The judged scores were then compared with the data describing the movements of the horse's trunk, the rider's pelvis, and the rider's trunk. The score for a horse's gaits was most heavily influenced by stride frequency, with a slower frequency being favored. The judges' scores for posture, effectiveness of aids, and harmony with the horse were most strongly influenced by the asymmetries in a rider's trunk movements, such that higher scores were associated with fewer rider asymmetries. In the sport of dressage, one or more judges score the combined performance of a horse and rider with an emphasis on the technical correctness of the movements performed. At the end of the test, a single score is awarded for the 'general impression', which considers the overall performance of the horse and rider as a team. This study explored original measures that contributed to the general impression score in a group of 20 horse–rider combinations. Horses and riders were equipped with inertial measurement units (200 Hz) to represent the angular motion of a horse's back and the motions of a rider's pelvis and trunk. Each combination performed a standard dressage test that was recorded to video. Sections of the video were identified for straight-line movements. The videos were analyzed by two or three judges. Four components were scored separately: gaits of the horse, rider posture, effectiveness of aids, and harmony with the horse. The main contributor to the score for gaits was stride frequency (R = −0.252, p = 0.015), with a slower frequency being preferred. Higher rider component scores were associated with more symmetrical transverse-plane trunk motion, indicating that this original measure is the most useful predictor of rider performance. Simple Summary: There is increasing interest in the effect of saddle design on horse kinematics, but little evidence of the influence on rider–saddle interaction and how this affects horse movement patterns. We aimed to investigate the effect of changing the design of the saddle's thigh block on the interaction between the rider and saddle and the effect this has on rider movement and horse movement. To do this, we used a seat pressure mat between the rider and the saddle and tracking technology to analyse horse and rider movement. Elite level sports horses, ridden by elite level riders, were trotted in well-fitting dressage saddles that were identical, except for the thigh block design. During straight-line locomotion when in sitting trot, results showed that a thigh block with a more deformable face (thigh block F) resulted in a greater contact area and more pressure between the rider's seat and the saddle as well as a more upright rider position when the horse's limbs were on the ground. An association between thigh block design, horse spinal movement, and forelimb flexion was also seen. These findings illustrated the importance of optimizing rider–saddle–horse interaction. The association between rider–saddle interaction and horse kinematics has been little studied. It was hypothesized that differences in a thigh block design would influence (a) rider–saddle interface pressures, (b) rider kinematics, and (c) equine limb/spinal kinematics. Eighteen elite sport horses/riders were trotted using correctly fitted dressage saddles with thigh blocks S (vertical face) and F (deformable face). Contact area, mean, and peak pressure between rider and saddle were determined using an on-saddle pressure mat. Spherical markers allowed for the measurement of horse/rider kinematics using two-dimensional video analysis. The kinematics of the equine thoracolumbosacral spine were obtained using skin-mounted inertial measuring units. Results were compared between thigh blocks (paired t-test p ≤ 0.05). With F, the contact area, mean, and peak pressure between rider and saddle were significantly higher (p = 0.0001), and the rider trunk anterior tilt was reduced, indicating altered rider–saddle interaction. The horse thoracic axial rotation and flexion/extension were reduced (p = 0.01–0.03), caudal thoracic and lumbar lateral bend was increased (p = 0.02–0.04), and carpal flexion increased (p = 0.01–0.05) with F compared to S. During straight-line locomotion when in sitting trot, thigh block F was associated with altered rider–saddle interaction and rider and equine kinematics, leading to a more consistent rider–saddle interface, a more upright rider trunk during stance, an increased horse thoracic stability and lumbar lateral bend, and forelimb flexion, supporting the importance of optimising rider–saddle–horse interaction. Simple Summary: The relevance of the expected value of the proportion of Arabian genes (EV%AG) in different horse breeds participating in the eventing discipline, and the way this factor should be included in equine genetic evaluations for eventing, have not been studied in depth in the current literature. A total of 1089 horses participating in eventing competitions (8862 participation records) were used for this study. The significance of the EV%AG in the different scores obtained was studied, and was found to be significant for the three exercises that make up the discipline of eventing (dressage, show jumping and cross-country). Five genetic models were computed to study the importance of the EV%AG in the pedigree of 10,375 horses. The best-fitted models following the DIC criterion were those including age as covariate, sex, breed, level, EV%AG and event as systematic effects, rider, animal and residual as random effects and variance heterogeneity, concluding that the best way to model the EV%AG effect seems to be by considering the variance heterogeneity. Dressage and show jumping heritability ranged from 0.10 in approach C to 0.21 in D. The estimated heritability for the cross-country trait oscillated less, between 0.07 and 0.01 in approach D. The Arabian horse is a generally reliable sport horse, and continues to be a remarkable endurance horse, so the relevance of the expected value of the proportion of Arabian genes (EV%AG) in horses participating in eventing could be a relevant factor. A total of 1089 horses participating in eventing (8866 records) were used. A GLM revealed that the EV%AG was significant in dressage, show jumping and cross-country. A BLUP genetic evaluation was computed with five genetic models (without the EV%AG (0) using as a covariate (A), as a fixed effect (B), with variance heterogeneity, and in genetic groups without (C) and with (D)). Dressage heritability ranged from 0.103 to 0.210, show jumping ranged from 0.117 to 0.203 and cross-country ranged from 0.070 to 0.099. The lowest DIC value was used as a criterion of fitness. The best fits (those which included variance heterogeneity) showed fewer than two points of difference in DIC values. The highest average estimated breeding value in dressage, show jumping and cross-country was found for horses with an expected value of the proportion of Arabian genes of 0%, ≥1% to <25%, and 100%, respectively.
