Defense mechanisms, together with coping strategies, are used to describe people’ s responses to stressful situations. They are part of normal development, serving the dual function of protecting the person from excessive anxiety and maintaining self esteem. According to the Vaillant’ s hierarchical model the ego defenses can be arranged on a continuum of the adjustment, with the mature defenses contributing to the successful and joyful life, and immature defenses predicting different psychopathology symptoms and disorders. Among the instruments available today for evaluating defense mechanisms, one of the most interesting is DSQ and its numerous versions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity of the DSQ-40 in Croatian sample and to examine the gender differences and associations between the defensive styles and some personality and psychopathology symptom patterns. The research was carried out on a sample of 300 Croatian university students. Three self-report measures were administered: Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40), Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). The Defense Style Questionnaire DSQ-40 (Andrews et al 1993) measure three clusters: mature, neurotic and immature style. With the permission of the author, the scale was translated into Croatian. Three experts, psychiatrists with the psychoanalytical training performed the content validity. Factor structure of defenses in Croatian sample is compared with original clusters. Internal reliability is evaluated as well. Data were analyzed according to gender differences. The associations between the defensive styles and personality dimensions and psychopathology symptom patterns are analyzed. The results provide evidence for the conclusion that emotional instability and immature defenses (especially autistic fantasy and projection) were the major predictors of the BSI psychiatric symptoms. On the other hand, it appeared that both, emotional stability and mature defenses are strongly correlated with perceived life satisfaction, social orientation, openness, extraversion, and emotional stability. Results in this study indicated that emotional stability and mature defenses appeared to protect the person from psychopathology.

Trata-se do estudo das propriedades psicométricas do Defensive Style Questionnaire-40 (DSQ-40) para a população prisional. Discute-se inicialmente, a relevância da utilização de medidas psicológicas válidas e precisas no contexto prisional, segundo uma perspectiva de reintegração psicossocial. Os conceitos de psicologia positiva, resiliência e defesas são utilizados como fundamentação teórico-epistêmica. Discute-se, a seguir, a utilização de instrumentos de medida das defesas como um meio de aferir as formas através das quais os sujeitos lidam com as demandas da realidade. Enfatiza-se a utilização do DSQ-40, que além de ser de fácil aplicação e correção, apresenta características psicométricas satisfatórias, segundo estudos nacionais e internacionais com diferentes amostras. O instrumento é um questionário de tipo self-report, com 40 itens desenvolvidos para avaliar os derivativos conscientes dos mecanismos de defesa; objetiva identificar o estilo característico de como as pessoas lidam, consciente ou inconscientemente com seus conflitos, segundo o pressuposto de que são capazes de comunicar com precisão seus comportamentos. O DSQ-40 avalia 20 defesas, divididas em três fatores: maduro, neurótico e imaturo. O instrumento foi aplicado a uma amostra de 271 presidiários (208 homens e 63 mulheres) reclusos em três unidades prisionais localizadas nos Estados de Mato Grosso do Sul e São Paulo. A precisão do instrumento foi estimada através do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson; os resultados indicaram que somente o fator imaturo apresentou estabilidade temporal. A consistência interna do instrumento foi aferida através do coeficiente alfa de Cronbach e da correlação média dos itens, mas somente o fator imaturo apresentou valores significativos (α = 0,80). A validade convergente foi estimada segundo o coeficiente de correlação de postos de Spearman, tendo sido utilizado como critério a Escala de Resiliência (n = 46). Para o estudo da validade discriminante utilizou-se a Escala de Avaliação de Sintomas EAS-40 (n = 38). O estudo de validade de construto foi realizado através do procedimento de análise fatorial segundo o método de análise dos componentes principais e rotação varimax. Foram obtidos três fatores interpretáveis (25,98% da variância): fator imaturo, fator maduro e fator neurótico. Do ponto de vista estrutural (itens que compõem cada fator) os resultados são muito semelhantes aos obtidos no estudo brasileiro com amostra clínica, para a adaptação do instrumento para o português. Dez defesas apresentaram carga fatorial satisfatória (superior a 0,30) no fator imaturo, duas no fator maduro e três no fator neurótico. Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de modificações e adaptações nos itens que medem as defesas neuróticas e maduras, no sentido de procurar ampliar os respectivos coeficientes de fidedignidade e de validade de constructo. This study refers to the psychometric properties of the Defensive Style Questionnaire- 40 (DSQ-40) for the imprisoned population. It discusses the relevance in the use of precise and valid psychological measures in the prison context, according to a perspective of psychosocial reintegration. The concepts of the positive Psychology, resilience and defenses are used as an epistemic-theorical basis. Afterwards, it discusses the use of defense measuring instruments as a means to estimate the ways individuals deal with the demands come from reality. It emphasizes the use of the DSQ-40, which is not only simple to use and correct, but also shows satisfactory psychometric characteristics, according to national and international studies. The instrument is a questionnaire self-report like and it contains 40 items developed to evaluate the resulting conscious defense mechanisms; it aims to identify the typical style which people deal conscious or unconsciously- with their conflicts, according to the postulation that they are able to communicate precisely through their behaviors. The DSQ-40 evaluates 20 defenses, divided in three factors: mature, neurotic and immature. The instrument applied to a sample of 271 prisoners (208 men and 63 women), who live in three prisons located in São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul States. The precision of the instrument was checked through the Pearson s co-relation coefficient; the results pointed that only the immature factor showed time stability. The internal consistence of the instrument was estimated through the Cronbach s Alpha coefficient and the average co-relation of the items, but only the immature factor showed expressive values (Alpha = 0,80). Ten defenses showed a satisfactory factorial importance (over 0,30) in the immature factor, two in the mature factor and three in the neurotic factor. The results suggest the need of modifications and adaptations in the items that measure the mature and neurotic defenses in order to try to expand the respective reliable coefficients and the validity of the construct.

Os mecanismos de defesa representam uma dimensão importante da estrutura da personalidade e do funcionamento psicodinâmico, sendo uma das formas de medir como o indivíduo habitualmente responde aos estressores. O estudo dos mecanismos de defesa utilizados por pacientes com Transtorno do Pânico (TP) pode ter utilidade no entendimento e no tratamento desse transtorno. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de avaliar os mecanismos de defesa do ego, nos pacientes com TP, e sua associação com gravidade, resposta ao tratamento e alteração pós tratamento. Sessenta pacientes com TP e 31 controles participaram da primeira fase do trabalho. O Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview foi usado para confirmar o diagnóstico de TP e estabelecer o diagnóstico de co-morbidades. A Impressão Clínica Global (CGI) foi usada para avaliar a gravidade do TP e o Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40) foi usado para avaliar os mecanismos de defesa. Em uma segunda etapa, 33 pacientes com TP sintomáticos e 33 voluntários normais foram avaliados com os mesmos instrumentos, aplicados no início do estudo e após 16 semanas. Os pacientes receberam durante esse período tratamento farmacológico com sertralina. Ambos os estudos demonstraram que pacientes com TP utilizam mais defesas neuróticas e imaturas comparados ao grupo controle. Os pacientes com pânico grave (CGI>4) apresentaram maior co-morbidade com depressão atual e usaram mais defesas imaturas do que os pacientes com CGI< 4 (média=4.2 vs. 3.5; p4) had more depression co morbidity and used more immature defenses than patients with CGI
