Objective: Oxidative stress has crucial roles in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The balance between oxidant and antioxidant biochemical parameters is detrimental in the progression of periodontal diseases. This study aims to assess the levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and saliva samples from patients who have periodontal disease. Methods: The study enrolled on 88 individuals divided into 4 groups: (1) periodontally healthy, (2) gingivitis, (3) stage I-II periodontitis, and (4) stage III-IV periodontitis. The participants had their serum and saliva samples taken. Clinical periodontal parameters were measured to determine the periodontal status. Then MPO, MDA, CAT, SOD, and GSH expressions were analyzed with appropriate methods. Results: Salivary-MPO levels improved in parallel with the periodontal disease's severity. The healthy patients had the highest serum-MDA expressions, which decreased as the severity of the disease increased. Glutathione and SOD concentrations were similar in each group. Catalase expressions in serum reached the highest level in stage I-II periodontitis patients. Nonetheless, there were no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: In conclusion, our results revealed that GSH, SOD, MDA, CAT, and MPO levels are not affected by the progression of periodontal diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The plant known as white mulberry, or Morus alba L., has several uses and is employed in traditional medicine in many different cultures. The objectives of this study are to determine the total phenolic component and antioxidant levels of the methanol and ethanol extracts of leaves of Morus alba L. (White mulberry). Methods: Using the techniques of DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl), FRAP (Iron ion that decreases antioxidant power), and CUPRAC (Copper ion that reduces antioxidant capacity), the antioxidant activities of methanol and ethanol extracts of Morus alba L. leaves were examined. Additionally, the Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) technique was used to evaluate the total phenolic content of the ethanol and methanol extracts. To determine the antioxidant capacity of extracts, reference samples were used to prepare various concentrations ranging from 1 to 100 µg/mL. The extract's equivalent antioxidant capacity was determined using sample concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 µg/mL. Results: The methanol and ethanol extracts of the leaves of the Morus alba L. (White mulberry) plant were found to have the greatest level of phenolic compounds at the 500 µg/mL concentration of extracts. It was determined that the Trolox Eq value of methanol extract was higher in the DPPH, FRAP and FCR methods, and the Trolox Eq value of the ethanol extract was higher in the CUPRAC method. Conclusion: The possible folk medicinal application of Morus alba L. is supported by this study. Determining the precise mechanisms of action of the extracts, the best extraction technique, the ideal dosage, and any possible adverse effects is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Aronia melanocarpa L. (aronia) fruit contains anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, and compounds from the polyphenol group. The fruits of this plant are the most abundant natural source of anthocyanins. The aim of this study is to determine the total phenolic compound amount of methanol and ethanol extract in the fruit of the aronia plant and to investigate its antioxidant effects. Methods: Ethanol and methanol extracts from aronia fruits were obtained. The Folin-Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR) was used to determine the total phenolic component levels in the extracts of aronia. By using the 1,1-d iphen yl-2-picry lhydr azyl (DPPH), iron ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and Cu
2+ ion reducing (CUPRAC) techniques, antioxidant activities were assessed. To calculate the extracts' equivalent antioxidant capacity, different reference sample concentrations ranging from 125 to 500 g/mL were prepared. Results: Both ethanol and methanol aronia extracts showed the highest phenolic component at a concentration of 500 μL/mL. Similary, both extracts FRAP and CUPRAC (Trolox Eq g/mL) activities and DPPH radical scavenging capacity (inhibition %) were highest at the concentration of 500 µL/mL. Conclusion: Aronia stands out as an antioxidant fruit and a potential natural therapeutic agents to alleviate oxidative stress. More research is needed to elucidate the exact mechanisms of action, optimum extraction method, optimal dosage, and potential side effects of the extracts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Micromeria species have various biological activities including antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti fungal and antioxidant activities, and therefore it has been reported that they are used in traditional treatment in many areas. This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant effects of Micromeria fruticosa L. Druce methanol extract obtained from the leaves of Micromeria fruticosa L. Druce plant. Extracts were prepared at the concentrations of 125, 250 and 500 μg/mL. Antioxidant activity of the samples were analyzed by FRAP (Iron ion reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) methods. Equivalent antioxidant capacity was determined by using different concentrations of 1-100 µg/mL of the reference samples. It was determined that the methanol extract of Micromeria fruticosa L. Druce plant exhibited antioxidant capacity according to FRAP and DPPH methods, thus further studies are needed to investigate therapeutic effects of this plant.

Nigella sativa L. essential oil is a widely used medicinal plant throughout the world. It is very popular in various traditional systems of medicine like Unani and Tibb, Ayurveda and Siddha. Acute and chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is considered a significant cause of peptic ulcers. Different doses (20-60 mg/kg body weight) of thymoquinone (TQ), the main constituent of Nigella sativa L. essential oil, have been shown to protect gastric tissue from NSAID-induced peptic ulcers. Researchers attributed the protective effect of TQ to its antioxidant properties. This study aimed to determine effective antiulcer dose range of TQ. In this study, we conducted a series of experiments to determine the optimal dosage of TQ in indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Additionally, we investigated the effect of TQ on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, glutathione (GSH) levels, and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Our results showed that, when administered at 40 and 20 mg/kg body weight, TQ was ineffective in preventing indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers. Moreover, TQ itself induced gastric ulcers at 40 mg/kg dose. As the doses of TQ decreased, the protective effect increased. 0.5 mg/kg TQ provided the best protection in terms of gastric ulcer area and antioxidant parameters, having statistically the same result with famotidine. Low dose TQ is an efficient protector of indomethacin-induced gastric damage, and it significantly enhances antioxidant parameters of gastric tissue. High dose TQ administration does not produce any desirable effects.

Objective: Our aim in this study is to guide the new work to be done to those who want to quit smoking, to give the points to be given priority and to give up smoking cessation in this frame by questionnaire about reasons of smoking cessation.Material and Methods: Administrative staff and academicians in Atatürk University who left the cigarette were applied a face to face questionnaire. The data of 128 participants in the survey were included in the study. The distribution of drop outs according to demographic groups was examined. Results: Age at onset of cigarette smoking was between 0-18% in 44%, 18-25% in 52% and 25% in 4%. It was determined that 67.2% of those who quit smoking had a fear of deterioration of health, 59.7% of them increased their quality of life, and 46.9% of them were affected by illness such as bad smell of cigarette. It was determined that television ads were effective at 1,6% and 0,8% of smoking cigarettes. Conclusion: In the first stage of smoking cessation, Although it is fearful that cigarette will harm health, it is determined that it is one of the important factors that one wants to quit smoking. In future cigarette quit campaigns, it is thought that the efforts to increase cigarette smoking behavior according to the demographic characteristics of the cigarette smokers and to reach an adequate awareness of the health risks of cigarettes in general smoking cessation campaigns should be continued and the ways to encourage smoking cessation should be increased., Amaç: Bu çalışmayı yapmadaki amacımız, sigara bırakma sebepleriyle ilgili anket yaparak elde edilen verilerle, sigarayı bırakmak isteyen kişilere yönelik yapılacak yeni çalışmalara rehberlik yapmak, öncelik verilmesi gereken noktalara dikkat çekmek ve bu çerçevede sigarayı bırakmak isteyenlere yol göstermektir.Yöntem: Sigarayı bırakmış Atatürk Üniversitesi idari personel ve akademisyenlere mail aracılığıyla, Erzurum’daki öğrenciler ve halka ise yüz yüze sorarak anket uygulandı. Ankete katılan 128 kişinin verileri çalışmaya dâhil edildi. Bırakma sebeplerinin demografik gruplara göre dağılımı incelendi. Bulgular: Sigaraya başlama yaşları % 44’ü 0-18, %52’si 18-25, % 4’ü 25 yaş ve üzeriydi. Sigarayı bırakan kişilerde % 67,2’inin sağlığın bozulma korkusu, % 59,7’sinin yaşam kalitesini artırma, % 46,9’unun sigaranın kötü kokusu gibi sebeplerin etkili olduğu belirlendi. Maddi yetersizlik sebebi % 22,6’ sında etkili olurken, televizyon internet reklamları % 1,6, sigara yasasının % 0,8’inde etkili olduğu belirlendi.Sonuç: Günümüzde sigara bırakmada yer alan etkenlerin birinci sırasında; sigaranın sağlığı bozacağı korkusu gelse de, kişinin sigarayı bırakmayı istemesi de önemli etmenlerden biri olduğu belirlenmiştir. Bundan sonra yapılacak sigara bıraktırma kampanyalarında sigara içen kişilerin demografik özelliklerine göre hareket edilmesinin yanı sıra genel sigara bıraktırma kampanyalarında ise bilhassa sigaranın sağlığa zararları konusunda yeterli farkındalığa ulaştırılması çabalarının artarak devam etmesi ve sigara bırakmayı teşvik yollarının arttırılması gerektiği düşüncesindeyiz..
