Abstract With the rapid global warming in recent decades, the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has suffered severe impacts, such as glacier retreat, glacial lake expansion, and permafrost degradation, which threaten the lives and properties of the local and downstream populations. Regional Reanalysis (RR) is vital for TP due to the limitations of observations. In this work, a 62-year (1961–2022) long atmospheric regional reanalysis with spatial resolution of 9 km (convective gray-zone scale) and temporal resolution of 1 hour over the TP (TPRR) was developed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, combined with re-initialization method, spectral nudging (SN), and several optimizations. TPRR is forced by ERA5 at hourly intervals. TPRR outperforms ERA5, realistically capturing climatological characteristics and seasonal variations of precipitation and T2m (air temperature at 2m above ground level). Moreover, TPRR better reproduces the frequency and intensity of precipitation, as well as the diurnal cycle of precipitation. This study also quantifies the wetting trend of 0.0071 mm/year over the TP amid global warming using TPRR.

Abstract The cloud classification algorithm widely used in the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) tends to underestimate low clouds over the Tibetan Plateau (TP), often mistaking water clouds for high‐level clouds. To address this issue, we propose a new algorithm based on cloud‐top temperature and optical thickness, which we apply to TP using Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) geostationary satellite data. Compared with Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System cloud‐type products and ISCCP results obtained from AHI data, this new algorithm markedly improved low‐cloud detection accuracy and better aligned with cloud phase results. Validation with lidar cloud‐type products further confirmed the superiority of this new algorithm. Diurnal cloud variations over the TP show morning dominance shifting to afternoon high clouds and evening mid‐level clouds. Winter is dominated by high clouds, summer by mid‐level clouds, spring by daytime low clouds and nighttime high clouds, and autumn by low and mid‐level clouds.

Real-time monitoring of rainfall areas based on satellite remote sensing is of vital importance for extreme rainfall research and disaster prediction. In this study, a new rainfall area identification algorithm was developed for the new generation of geostationary satellites with high spatial and temporal resolution and rich bands. As the main drivers of the rainfall process, the macro and micro physical properties of clouds play an important role in the formation and development of rainfall. We considered differences in the absorption capacity of the water vapor absorption channels in the infrared band and introduced a sensitivity difference of rainfall area in water vapor channels to construct a sensitive detection of the water vapor region. The results of this algorithm were evaluated using Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite products and CloudSat measurements in various scenarios, with hit rates of 70.03% and 81.39% and false alarm rates of 2.05% and 21.34%, respectively. Spatiotemporal analysis revealed that the types of upper clouds in the rainfall areas mainly consisted of deep convection, cirrostratus, and nimbostratus clouds. Our study provides supporting data for weather research and disaster prediction, as well as an efficient and reliable method for capturing temporal and spatial features.

The measurement of bidirectional reflectivity for ground-based objects is a highly intricate task, with significant limitations in the capabilities of both ground-based and satellite-based observations from multiple viewpoints. In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a novel remote sensing method, offering convenience and cost-effectiveness while enabling multi-view observations. This study devised a polygonal flight path along the hemisphere to achieve bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) measurements for large zenith angles and all azimuth angles. By employing photogrammetry’s principle of aerial triangulation, accurate observation angles were restored, and the geometric structure of “sun-object-view” was constructed. Furthermore, three BRDF models (M_Walthall, RPV, RTLSR) were compared and evaluated at the UAV scale in terms of fitting quality, shape structure, and reflectance errors to assess their inversion performance. The results demonstrated that the RPV model exhibited superior inversion performance followed, by M_Walthall; however, RTLST performed comparatively poorly. Notably, the M_Walthall model excelled in capturing smooth terrain object characteristics while RPV proved applicable to various types of rough terrain objects with multi-scale applicability for both UAVs and satellites. These methods and findings are crucial for an extensive exploration into the bidirectional reflectivity properties of ground-based objects, and provide an essential technical procedure for studying various ground-based objects’ in-plane reflection properties.

Accurate high-resolution atmospheric temperature profiles are essential for precisely characterizing the evolution of the atmosphere and developing numerical forecasts. Atmospheric datasets, such as ERA5 (the fifth-generation ECMWF Reanalysis) and MERRA-2 (the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2), provide global and continuous temperature profiles, with fine vertical distribution and horizontal resolution. RAOB (Radiosonde Observation) sounding data have high confidence and representativeness and are usually used for data accuracy verification. Due to the difficulty of updating existing products, and the scarcity of research on mesospheric temperature profiles, this work maximizes the high observation accuracy of RAOB data, combines the benefits of ERA5’s horizontal resolution and MERRA-2’s vertical distribution, and employs the optimal interpolation method to combine the data, in order to produce a fused result with high spatial resolution. After converting all of the data to the same spatial distribution, the optimal interpolation method was used to combine the two datasets from separate places and different pressure layers in order to produce the fused results, which had a vertical distribution of 45 layers and a spatial resolution of 0.25°. The fused data’s RMSE and MAE were 6.0 K and 5.0 K lower than those of the MERRA-2 temperature profile data, respectively, and 0.3 K and 0.4 K lower than those of the ERA5 temperature profile data, respectively. The validation, using data from 2019, showed that the fused data exhibits better correlation and data accuracy than the other two datasets, which demonstrated that the fused algorithm can potentially be used to generate reliable datasets for future meteorological research.

Total precipitable water (TPW) is a key parameter in global hydrological cycle and plays an important role in climate change as a kind of green house. Especially, a long-term TPW dataset will help us to better understand its impact on hydrological cycle and our living environment under the background of warming climate. Thus, a long-term global TPW product from 2002 to 2017 was created for the first time at the resolution of 0.25° × 0.25° based on the observations from passive microwave radiometers AMSR-E and AMSR2 and TPW product from AIRS2RET in this study. Based on the newly created TPW product, a long-term trend analysis was carried out on both global and regional scale. According to the long-term trend analysis, the linear trend of global average TPW anomaly is 0.34 mm/decade. Especially, there is a faster increasing speed for TPW in recent decade from 2008 to 2017. For the trend analysis on regional scale, the most noteworthy thing is that there is a negative linear trend of TPW anomaly in the atmosphere over rainforest distributed in the Amazon and central Africa, which means the atmosphere is becoming dryer in these areas. The drying atmosphere will cause a decrease in precipitation and will further cause a great damage to the rainforests in the Amazon and central Africa if the dry trend continues.

For the timely retrieval of global positioning system based precipitable water vapor (GPS-PWV) over complex topography when there is no in situ pressure-derived zenith hydrostatic delays (ZHDs), this article evaluates three types of ready-made ZHD products, including two newly released products from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien, TUW-VMF3) and GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ-VMF1) and a legacy product TUW-VMF1. We implement them for the first time for GPS-PWV retrieval in regions with highly variable topography, such as the Tibetan plateau (TP). First, we present a refined method [model-assisted ZHD height adjustment, model-assisted ZHD height adjustment (MAZHA)] for implementing the above VMF1/VMF3-like ZHD products. The results reveal that the MAZHA method improves the implementation accuracy over the TP by 70% compared to the conventional method. Then, the above multisource VMF1/VMF3-like ZHD products are evaluated using the in situ pressure-derived ZHDs across the TP. The results show that the GFZ-VMF1 outperforms the TUW-VMF1 mainly because a more advanced underlying numerical weather model (ERA5) are adopted. TUW-VMF3 achieves the best performance mainly because it is provided with improved horizontal resolution. Finally, we find that implementing the state-of-the-art TUW-VMF3 ZHD product for GPS-PWV retrieval yields no statistically significant errors, even under extreme weather conditions, and the retrieved GPS-PWVs can well characterize the PWV diurnal variations in all seasons except winter. Additionally, considering the fact that the operational and forecasted TUW-VMF3 ZHDs present almost equivalent performance, this article is also beneficial to real-time GPS-PWV retrieval using forecasted TUW-VMF3 ZHDs, thus allowing for the ease of real-time GPS-PWV retrieval.

Concerns about the safety of anesthetic agents in children arose after animal studies revealed disruptions in neurodevelopment after exposure to commonly used anesthetic drugs. These animal studies revealed that volatile inhalational agents, propofol, ketamine, and thiopental may have detrimental effects on neurodevelopment and cognitive function, but dexmedetomidine and xenon have been shown to have neuroprotective properties. The neurocognitive effects of benzodiazepines have not been extensively studied, so their effects on neurodevelopment are undetermined. However, experimental animal models may not truly represent the pathophysiological processes in children. Multiple landmark studies, including the MASK, PANDA, and GAS studies have provided reassurance that brief exposure to anesthesia is not associated with adverse neurocognitive outcomes in infants and children, regardless of the type of anesthetic agent used.

Abstract Analysis of cloud cover and its diurnal variation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is highly reliant on satellite data; however, the accuracy of cloud detection from both polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites over this area remains unclear. The new-generation geostationary Himawari-8 satellites provide high-resolution spatial and temporal information about clouds over the Tibetan Plateau. In this study, the cloud detection of MODIS and AHI is investigated and validated against CALIPSO measurements. For AHI and MODIS, the false alarm rate of AHI and MODIS in cloud identification over the TP was 7.51% and 1.94%, respectively, and the cloud hit rate was 73.55% and 80.15%, respectively. Using hourly cloud-cover data from the Himawari-8 satellites, we found that at the monthly scale, the diurnal cycle in cloud cover over the TP tends to increase throughout the day, with the minimum and maximum cloud fractions occurring at 10:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m. local time. Due to the limited time resolution of polar-orbiting satellites, the underestimation of MODIS daytime average cloud cover is approximately 4.00% at the annual scale, with larger biases during the spring (5.40%) and winter (5.90%).

Total precipitable water (TPW) is an important key factor in the global water cycle and climate change. The knowledge of TPW characteristics at spatial and temporal scales could help us to better understand our changing environment. Currently, many algorithms are available to retrieve TPW from optical and microwave sensors. There are still no available TPW data over land from FY-3D MWRI, which was launched by China in 2017. However, the TPW product over land is a key element for the retrieval of many ecological environment parameters. In this paper, an improved algorithm was developed to retrieve TPW over land from the brightness temperature of FY-3D MWRI. The major improvement is that surface emissivity, which is a key parameter in the retrieval of TPW in all-weather conditions, was developed and based on an improved algorithm according to the characteristics of FY-3D MWRI. The improvement includes two aspects, one is selection of appropriate ancillary data in estimating surface emissivity parameter Δε18.7/Δε23.8 in clear sky conditions, and the other is an improvement of the Δε18.7/Δε23.8 estimation function in cloudy conditions according to the band configuration of FY-3D MWRI. Finally, TPW retrieved was validated using TPW observation from the SuomiNet GPS and global distributed Radiosonde Observations (RAOB) networks. According to the validation, TPW retrieved using observations from FY-3D MWRI and ancillary data from Aqua MODIS had the best quality. The root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient between the retrieved TPW and observed TPW from RAOB were 5.47 and 0.94 mm, respectively.

Herein, a case study on the impact of assimilating satellite radiance observation data into the rapid-refresh multi-scale analysis and prediction system (RMAPS) is presented. This case study targeted the 48 h period from 19–20 July 2016, which was characterized by the passage of a low pressure system that produced heavy rainfall over North China. Two experiments were performed and 24 h forecasts were produced every 3 h. The results indicated that the forecast prior to the satellite radiance data assimilation could not accurately predict heavy rainfall events over Beijing and the surrounding area. The assimilation of satellite radiance data from the advanced microwave sounding unit-A (AMSU-A) and microwave humidity sounding (MHS) improved the skills of the quantitative precipitation forecast to a certain extent. In comparison with the control experiment that only assimilated conventional observations, the experiment with the integrated satellite radiance data improved the rainfall forecast accuracy for 6 h accumulated precipitation after about 6 h, especially for rainfall amounts that were greater than 25 mm. The average rainfall score was improved by 14.2% for the 25 mm threshold and by 35.8% for 50 mm of rainfall. The results also indicated a positive impact of assimilating satellite radiances, which was primarily reflected by the improved performance of quantitative precipitation forecasting and higher spatial correlation in the forecast range of 6–12 h. Satellite radiance observations provided certain valuable information that was related to the temperature profile, which increased the scope of the prediction of heavy rainfall and led to an improvement in the rainfall scoring in the RMAPS. The inclusion of satellite radiance observations was found to have a small but beneficial impact on the prediction of heavy rainfall events as it relates to our case study conditions. These findings suggest that the assimilation of satellite radiance data in the RMAPS can provide an overall improvement in heavy rainfall forecasting.

Clouds and their associated shadows are major obstacles to most land surface remote sensing applications. Meanwhile, solar-cloud-satellite geometry (SCSG) makes the effect of clouds and shadows on derived land surface biophysical parameters more complicated. However, in most existing studies, the SCSG effect has been frequently neglected although it is pointed out by many works that SCSG effect is a noticeable problem, especially in the field of land surface radiation budget. Taking shortwave downward radiation (SWDR) as a testing variable, this study quantified the SCSG effect on the derived SWDR, and proposed an operational scheme to correct the big effect. The results demonstrate that the proposed correcting scheme is very effective and works very well. It is revealed that a significant under- or overestimation is detected in retrieved SWDR if the SCSG effect is ignored. Typically, the induced error in SWDR can reach up to 80%. The scheme and findings of this study are expected to be inspirational for the land surface remote sensing community, wherein solar-cloud-satellite geometry is an unavoidable issue.

Due to the difficulty in accurately interpreting surface emissivity spectra, problems remain in the application of passive microwave satellite observations over land surfaces. This study develops a parameterized soil surface emissivity model to quantify the microwave emissivity accurately and rapidly for Gaussian-correlated rough surfaces. We first analyze the sensitivity of surface emissivity to parameters using the advanced integral equation model (AIEM) simulated data. On the basis of the analysis and previous empirical models, two function factors that consider the polarization dependence of surface reflectivity are developed in the parameterized soil surface emissivity model. These factors also comprehensively account for the effects of surface roughness, soil moisture, and incident angle. A comparison with the AIEM simulated data indicates that the absolute error of effective reflectivity estimated by the parameterized soil surface emissivity model is small with a magnitude of 10−2. Validation through experimental measurements suggests that a good agreement could be obtained. The parameterized soil surface emissivity model is applied to simulate satellite measurements of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E). Compared with the commonly-used microwave land emissivity model developed by Weng et al. (2001), the simulation results using the parameterized soil surface emissivity model yield a lower root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the overall errors are reduced, particularly for horizontal polarization. The newly-developed parameterized soil surface emissivity model should be useful in improving our understanding and modeling the measurements of passive microwave radiometers.

Global warming induced by atmospheric CO2 has attracted increasing attention of researchers all over the world. Although space-based technology provides the ability to map atmospheric CO2 globally, the number of valid CO2 measurements is generally limited for certain instruments owing to the presence of clouds, which in turn constrain the studies of global CO2 sources and sinks. Thus, it is a potentially promising work to combine the currently available CO2 measurements. In this study, a strategy for fusing SCIAMACHY and GOSAT CO2 measurements is proposed by fully considering the CO2 global bias, averaging kernel, and spatiotemporal variations as well as the CO2 retrieval errors. Based on this method, a global CO2 map with certain UTC time can also be generated by employing the pattern of the CO2 daily cycle reflected by Carbon Tracker (CT) data. The results reveal that relative to GOSAT, the global spatial coverage of the combined CO2 map increased by 41.3% and 47.7% on a daily and monthly scale, respectively, and even higher when compared with that relative to SCIAMACHY. The findings in this paper prove the effectiveness of the combination method in supporting the generation of global full-coverage XCO2 maps with higher temporal and spatial sampling by jointly using these two space-based XCO2 datasets.

Snow water equivalent (SWE) is a key parameter in the Earth’s energy budget and water cycle. It has been demonstrated that SWE can be retrieved using active microwave remote sensing from space. This necessitates the development of forward models that are capable of simulating the interactions of microwaves and the snow medium. Several proposed models have described snow as a collection of sphere- or ellipsoid-shaped ice particles embedded in air, while the microstructure of snow is, in reality, more complex. Natural snow usually forms a sintered structure following mechanical and thermal metamorphism processes. In this research, the bi-continuous vector radiative transfer (bi-continuous-VRT) model, which firstly constructs snow microstructure more similar to real snow and then simulates the snow backscattering signal, is used as the forward model for SWE estimation. Based on this forward model, a parameterization scheme of snow volume backscattering is proposed. A relationship between snow optical thickness and single scattering albedo at X and Ku bands is established by analyzing the database generated from the bi-continuous-VRT model. A cost function with constraints is used to solve effective albedo and optical thickness, while the absorption part of optical thickness is obtained from these two parameters. SWE is estimated after a correction for physical temperature. The estimated SWE is correlated with the measured SWE with an acceptable accuracy. Validation against two-year measurements, using the SnowScat instrument from the Nordic Snow Radar Experiment (NoSREx), shows that the estimated SWE using the presented algorithm has a root mean square error (RMSE) of 16.59 mm for the winter of 2009–2010 and 19.70 mm for the winter of 2010–2011.
