During an investigation of Korean Ascomycetes in 2023, we found two undescribed species from South Korea. We analyzed them using a combined approach, including morphological and phylogenetic analyses of the rDNA regions (internal transcribed spacer and large subunit). The two species were identified to belong to the genus Geoglossum; the species G. simile and a new species named G. subdifforme sp. nov. The phylogenetic tree constructed using the ITS region showed that G. subdifforme is closely related to G. difforme. These species are distinguishable by certain morphological characteristics, particularly the size and septae of ascospores. Morphologically, G. simile is related to G. glabrum, but it is distinguishable by the morphological characteristics of paraphyses as well as ITS sequences. In this study, the descriptions, photographs, and phylogenetic relationships of these Geoglossum species are presented.

Buildings constitute a significant portion of global energy demand, accounting for approximately 30% of final energy consumption and over 50% of global electricity usage. As per the International Energy Agency, this sector is responsible for 26% of energy-related emissions, with demand projected to increase by 4% in 2024, as per the International Energy Agency. Lighting is a critical component of this consumption and continues to be a major contributor to electricity use. A marked increase in residential lighting energy consumption in South Korea underscores these global trends. Traditional building energy models must address human behavior’s complexity, often relying on static schedules. This study leverages statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze lighting energy consumption across varying temporal scales, using real empirical data from South Korean residential buildings. The analysis reveals insights into behavior-driven energy consumption, highlighting the necessity for dynamic energy modeling that integrates occupant behavioral variability for energy use, their intrinsic routines, and temporal patterns. The findings have profound implications for enhancing energy efficiency and optimizing conservation strategies in escalating global energy demands.

We isolated fungi from the rhizosphere of Fallopia sachalinensis in Dokdo islands. Morphological and molecular characters, based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and partial large subunit (LSU) or partial beta-tubulin genes, were used to identify the isolated fungi. The results revealed the fungi isolated from the Fallopia rhizosphere to be Penicillium striatisporum and Gongronella sichuanensis. Given that these species have never previously been recorded in Korea, we have described the morphological and molecular characteristics of these fungi in this study.

With increasing electronic medical data and the development of artificial intelligence, clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) assist clinicians in diagnosis and prescription. Traditional knowledge-based CDSSs follow an accumulated medical knowledgebase and a predefined rule system, which clarifies the decision-making process; however, maintenance cost issues exist in the medical data quality control and standardization processes. Non-knowledge-based CDSSs utilize vast amounts of data and algorithms to effectively make decisions; however, the deep learning black-box problem causes unreliable results. EXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)-based CDSSs provide valid rationales and explainable results. These systems ensure trustworthiness and transparency by showing the recommendation and prediction result process using explainable techniques. However, existing systems have limitations, such as the scope of data utilization and the lack of explanatory power of AI models. This study proposes a new XAI-based CDSS framework to address these issues; introduces resources, datasets, and models that can be utilized; and provides a foundation model to support decision-making in various disease domains. Finally, we propose future directions for CDSS technology and highlight societal issues that need to be addressed to emphasize the potential of CDSSs in the future.

Purpose Individual anatomical structural variations, including intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP), prostatic urethral angle (PUA), prostatic urethral length, or prostatic apex shape, were correlated with micturition symptoms. In Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), nodes capable of retrieving video, audio, images, and small scale sensor data, tend to generate immense traffic of various types. The energy-efficient transmission of such a vast amount of heterogeneous multimedia content while simultaneously ensuring the quality of service and optimal energy consumption is indispensable. Therefore, we propose a Power-Efficient Wireless Multimedia of Things (PE-WMoT), a robust and energy-efficient cluster-based mechanism to improve the overall lifetime of WMSNs. In a PE-WMoT, nodes declare themselves Cluster Heads (CHs) based on available resources. Once cluster formation and CH declaration processes are completed, the Sub-Cluster (SC) formation process triggers, in which application base nodes within close vicinity of each other organize themselves under the administration of a Sub-Cluster Head (SCH). The SCH gathers data from member nodes, removes redundancies, and forwards miniaturized data to its respective CH. PE-WMoT adopts a fuzzy-based technique named the analytical hierarchical process, which enables CHs to select an optimal SCH among available SCs. A PE-WMoT also devises a robust scheduling mechanism between CH, SCH, and child nodes to enable collision-free data transmission. Simulation results revealed that a PE-WMoT significantly reduces the number of redundant packet transmissions, improves energy consumption of the network, and effectively increases network throughput.

Abstract Permeation properties of hydrogen gas (H2) into nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and fluoroelastomer (FKM) which are the strong candidates for sealing material in H2 energy infrastructures, was quantified using a thermal desorption analysis gas chromatography (TDA GC) and a self-developed diffusion-analysis program. The samples were charged with H2 in a high-pressure chamber for 24 h then decompressed into atmosphere, and the mass of H2 released from the sample was measured as a function of elapsed time after decompression. The developed program calculated the total charging amount C 0 and diffusivity D, which were then used to calculate the H2 solubility S and permeability P for variation of pressure. The samples were polymerized with and without carbon black (CB) filler in cylindrical shapes with different diameters. There was no appreciable pressure up to 12 MPa or diameter dependence investigated in this study on D, S and P. NBR and EPDM showed dual hydrogen diffusion with fast and slow diffusion behaviors caused by CB, whereas FKM showed a single diffusion behavior. The determined D are D fast, NBR = (1.55 ± 0.28) × 10–10 m2/s, D slow, NBR = (3.1 ± 0.5) × 10–11 m2/s, D fast, EPDM = (3.65 ± 0.66) × 10–10 m2/s, D slow, EPDM = (3.3 ± 0.5) × 10–11 m2/s, D FKM = (7.7 ± 0.8) × 10–11 m2/s. It appeared that the filler contributes to increase S and decrease D. The uncertainty analysis against the evaluated data was carried out, too, in order that the method could be applicable as a standard test for the permeation properties of various polymer membranes.

Background and Objectives: Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) is widely used to evaluate urolithiasis. The NCCT attenuation, measured in Hounsfield units (HU), has been evaluated to predict stone characteristics. We propose a novel parameter, linear calculus density (LCD), and analyze variables from NCCT imaging to predict calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones, which are common and challenging to fragment. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with urolithiasis between 2014 and 2017. Among those, 790 patients were included. Based on the NCCT pre-treatment, the maximal stone length (MSL), mean stone density (MSD), and stone heterogeneity index (SHI) were obtained. In addition, the variation coefficient of stone density (VCSD = SHI/MSD × 100) and linear calculus density (LCD = VCSD/MSL) were calculated. In accordance with the stone analysis, the patients were divided into two groups (CaOx and non-CaOx groups). The logistic regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for predictive modeling. Results: In the CaOx group, the SHI, VCSD, and LCD were more significant than in the non-CaOx group (all p < 0.001). SHI (OR 1.002, 95% CI 1.001–1.004, p < 0.001), VCSD (OR 1.028, 95% CI 1.016–1.041, p < 0.001), and LCD (OR 1.352, 95% CI 1.270–1.444, p < 0.001) were significant independent factors for CaOx stones in the logistic regression models. The areas under the ROC curve for predicting CaOx stones were 0.586 for SHI, 0.66 for VCSD, and 0.739 for LCD, with a cut-point of 2.25. Conclusions: LCD can be a useful new parameter to provide additional information to help discriminate CaOx stones before treatment.

Background/AimsKnowledge regarding the quality metrics of fecal immunochemical test (FIT)-based colorectal cancer screening programs is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the performance and quality metrics of a FIT-based screening program.Methods : In our screening program, asymptomatic subjects aged ≥50 years underwent an annual FIT, and subjects with positive FIT results underwent a subsequent colonoscopy. The performance of the FIT and colonoscopy was analyzed in individuals with a positive FIT who completed the program between 2009 and 2015 at a university hospital.Results : Among the 51,439 screened participants, 75.1% completed the FIT. The positive rate was 1.1%, and the colonoscopy completion rate in these patients was 68.6%. The positive predictive values of cancer and advanced neoplasia were 5.5% and 19.1%, respectively. The adenoma detection rate in the patients who underwent colonoscopy after a positive FIT was 48.2% (60.0% for men and 33.6% for women). Background/AimsThe adoption of colonoscopy as a primary colorectal cancer (CRC) screening technique has been argued for in Korea, without evidence of patient preferences. We have measured the terahertz-frequency optical conductivity of the epitaxial inverse spinel NiCo2O4 films grown at different temperatures. The low-temperature-grown film exhibits a metallic behavior with ferrimagnetic ordering, while the high-temperature-grown film shows greatly suppressed magnetization and insulating behavior. Both films exhibit band-like coherent conduction at intermediate temperatures, albeit with very different carrier densities consistent with the proposed models of cation valencies in this mixed-valence material. Both films also display a crossover to incoherent transport at low temperatures, indicating a disorder-induced tendency toward localization.
