19. Bending Characteristics of a Transposed Cable (X-Cable) With in-Plane Bending of REBCO Tapes

Abstract

A compact High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) cable, which is achieved by in-plane bending stacked REBCO tapes directly to realize the transposition(X-cable), has been designed and successfully fabricated by the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP, CAS) for the application in high-field accelerator magnets. The high current carrying capacity and low AC loss of the X-cable have been investigated in our previous studies. In this article, the bendability of the X-cable was studied at 77 K and self-field, especially the minimum bending radius without performance degradation. The critical current (Ic) of each tape contained in the full-scale strand in the cable was powered individually at different bending radii. By analyzing the single tape's Ic as a function of bending radius, the test results demonstrate a good bending performance of the cable. The inter-tape resistance (Rc) is also investigated as a function of bending radius, which becomes more uniform and smaller after bending. Meanwhile, the dome-like shape of Rc explains that the copper film wrapped outside the stack can help share the current to improve the stability of the cable. The cable's parameters, bending performance test, and results analysis are presented in this work.

26. Longitudinal Insulation Design of Hybrid Toroidal Magnet for 10 MJ High-Temperature Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage

Abstract

A hybrid toroidal magnet using MgB textsubscript 2 and YBCO material is proposed for the 10 MJ high-temperature superconducting magnetic energy storage (HTS-SMES) system. However, the HTS-SMES magnet is susceptible to transient overvoltages caused by switching operations or lightning impulses, which pose a serious threat to longitudinal insulation. Accurate and efficient simulation of the voltage distribution characteristics of HTS-SMES magnets under transient overvoltages is important for the design of the longitudinal insulation of the magnets. Conventional modeling and analysis methods based on a turn conductor are not directly applicable to large-capacity HTS-SMES, due to the massive scale of the circuit model and requiring significant computational costs. In this article, a “Two-Step” lumped parametric equivalent circuit model is proposed for large magnets to simplify the calculation. Then, the transient voltage distribution characteristics of the hybrid toroidal magnet for 10 MJ HTS-SMES under lightning voltage impulse are analyzed. The effect of the turn-to-turn insulation thickness on the voltage distribution characteristics is studied. Finally, a preliminary design of the longitudinal insulation of the hybrid toroidal magnet for 10 MJ HTS-SMES is presented. The proposed simulation model was verified by sample coils, which is consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract

A Rogowski coil based sensor for current measurement in a cryogenic environment and results of its application for paralleled high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil current sharing are presented. The current sensor consists of a Rogowski coil and an integrator, where the coil output voltage is proportional to the derivative of primary current and the integrator transfers the differentiation to normal state. The Rogowski coil has promising applicability at cryogenic circumstance because its body is made of low temperature materials. The integrator ensures a large bandwidth with feasible magnitude, which is vital for dynamic current measurement during the quench of the HTS coil. The proposed current sensor is used for current sharing measurement of two paralleled Bi2223 HTS coils, and the experimental results show that the measurement precision is better than 0.5%.
