Abstract

Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is commonly used to analyze trace elements in magnetite, which can be divided into internal standard (IS) and no internal standard (NIS) methods according to calibration techniques. IS method involves a relatively complex process for the determination of Fe content by Electron Microprobe. Moreover, elemental content are affected by the analytical accuracy of IS elemental iron. An analytical method for determination of trace elements in magnetite by LA-ICP-MS using multiple external standards (basaltic glasses BCR-2g, BIR-1g, BHVO-2g, GSE-1G) without an IS element has been developed. The proposed method avoids the determination of the IS element. Trace element compositions of komatitic glass (GOR-128g) and natural magmatic magnetite (BC 28) were determined by the proposed method and used to evaluate the reliability of the method. Results show that the analytical values of komatitic glass are consistent with the certified values and reported values by the existing IS method. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of most elements is smaller than 5%. Most elements of natural magmatic magnetite have RSD better than 7% between the analytical values and the certified values, and RSD better than 15% between the analytical values and the reported values by the IS method. This indicates that multiple external standards without an IS method can determine accurate calibration of trace element concentrations of iron-rich silicates and magnetite, overcoming the matrix effects. Therefore, multiple external standards without an IS method is a fast and precise method for determination of trace elements in magnetite, which has a great application potential.

Abstract

We designed and successfully fabricated a ZnS/CdS 3D mesoporous heterostructure with a mediating Zn1–xCdxS interface., We designed and successfully fabricated a ZnS/CdS 3D mesoporous heterostructure with a mediating Zn1–xCdxS interface that serves as a charge carrier transport channel for the first time. The H2-production rate and the stability of the heterostructure involving two sulfides were dramatically and simultaneously improved by the careful modification of the interface state via a simple post-annealing method. The sample prepared with the optimal parameters exhibited an excellent H2-production rate of 106.5 mmol h–1 g–1 under visible light, which was 152 and 966 times higher than CdS prepared using ethylenediamine and deionized water as the solvent, respectively. This excellent H2-production rate corresponded to the highest value among the CdS-based photocatalysts. Moreover, this heterostructure showed excellent photocatalytic stability over 60 h.

32. Role of interleukin‐17 in the pathogenesis of perianal abscess and anal fistula: a clinical study on 50 patients with perianal abscess.

Abstract

Background: To investigate the role of interleukin (IL)‐17 in tissue and peripheral blood of perianal abscess and anal fistula. Methods: Patients with primary perianal abscess (n = 50) admitted to Jinhua Municipal Central Hospital between March 2003 and August 2004 were enrolled. Fifty patients with mixed haemorrhoids, who showed no perianal abscess or anal fistula, were also recruited as the control. After surgery, patients were followed up for 6 months. Protein and gene expression of IL‐17 was determined in surgically harvested anal tissues and peripheral blood, respectively. The relationship between IL‐17 and clinical pathological features were analysed. Results: As shown by immunohistochemistry of anorectal tissues, the positive rate of IL‐17 protein was higher in the perianal abscess group than in the control group. In patients with perianal abscess, the expression of IL‐17 significantly correlated with the diameter of the abscess (P = 0.013), the wound surface healing time (P = 0.010) and the progression into anal fistula (P = 0.003). For the gene expression of IL‐17 in peripheral blood cells, the level was significantly higher in patients with perianal abscess comparing to the control group (0.4350 ± 0.1190 versus 0.1785 ± 0.1230, P ≤ 0.001). Comparing to the recovery group, patients with their perianal abscess progressed to anal fistula showed higher levels of IL‐17 gene expression (P = 0.014). Conclusions: Expression of IL‐17 was increased in the anorectal tissues and peripheral blood of patients with perianal abscess and anal fistula. 45. Controls on trace-element partitioning among co-crystallizing minerals: Evidence from the Panzhihua layered intrusion, SW China

Abstract

The factors and processes that control trace-element partitioning among co-crystallizing cumulus minerals in layered intrusions have long been controversial. Here we address this issue using new laser ablation ICP-MS trace element data for magnetite, ilmenite, and clinopyroxene from the Panzhihua layered intrusion in the Emeishan large igneous province, SW China. The cumulus minerals display strong Ni, Co, and Cr depletions, indicative of parental magmas low in concentration of these elements probably due to prior sulfide removal and the fractionation of chromite or Cr-magnetite in a staging magma chamber at depth. Both magnetite and clinopyroxene show cyclical variations in some transition elements (e.g., Cr, V, and Ni) along the stratigraphic section. The average concentrations of these transition elements in magnetite are positively correlated with those in clinopyroxene, likely resulting from co-crystallization of magnetite and clinopyroxene. The incompatible element (e.g., Zr, Hf, and Nb) concentrations of the cumulus minerals from the Lower Zone are highly variable compared to those of the Middle and Upper Zones. These large variations in trace element compositions are attributed to a “trapped liquid shift” in the Lower Zone. Ilmenite crystals from the Panzhihua intrusion may have undergone extensive modification of transition elements during subsolidus re-equilibration with magnetite, leading to the decoupled variations of transition elements in ilmenite across the Lower Zone stratigraphy. Our study indicates that systematic trace element variations of the main cumulus mineral assemblage, rather than a single mineral, need to be considered to better constrain the magmatic differentiation and elemental fractionation of layered intrusions.
