Abstract

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. Abstract

To recycle vanadium from V-bearing steelmaking slag and V-bearing black shale, both were jointly roasted to generate vanadium-rich phase, and then vanadium was separated by magnetic separation in this study. The compositions of samples were determined by X-ray fluorescence meter and the phases in the samples were characterized using X-ray diffractometer. The experimental results showed that with increasing the ratio of CaO content to SiO2 content in the samples the vanadium separation efficiency first decreased, increased, and then decreased again. With increasing roasting temperature from 1423 to 1623 K, the vanadium separation efficiency increased. With increasing roasting time from one hour to four hours, the vanadium separation efficiency increased. The optimum conditions for vanadium recycling are the basicity of 1.2, roasting temperature of 1623 K, and roasting time of 4 hours. Under this condition, the separation efficiency of vanadium reaches 71.6%, and the concentrate contains 3.67% V2O5 and 46.9% Fe2O3. Abstract

The study of integrable systems has led to significant advancements in our understanding of many-body physics. We design a series of numerical experiments to analyze the integrability of a mass-imbalanced two-body system through energy level statistics and deep learning of wavefunctions. The level spacing distributions are fitted by a Brody distribution and the fitting parameter $\omega$ is found to separate the integrable and non-integrable mass ratios by a critical line $\omega=0$. The convolutional neural network built from the probability density images could identify the transition points between integrable and non-integrable systems with high accuracy, yet in a much shorter computation time. A brilliant example of the network's ability is to identify a new integrable mass ratio $1/3$ by learning from the known integrable case of equal mass, with a remarkable network confidence of $98.78\%$. The robustness of our neural networks is further enhanced by adversarial learning, where samples are generated by standard and quantum perturbations mixed in the probability density images and the wavefunctions, respectively., Comment: 14 pages,16 figures

The aim of this research is to evaluate the relationship between HDL levels and spirometry as well as imaging parameters in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in China.Methods: This study encompasses a total of 907 COPD patients. Participants with complete data from questionnaire interviews, lipid profile examinations, spirometry testing, and computed tomography (CT) scans were included in the analysis. A generalized additive model was employed to identify the non-linear relationship between HDL levels and both spirometry and imaging parameters. In the presence of non-linear correlations, segmented linear regression model was applied to ascertain threshold effects.Results: After adjusting for various factors, we found a non-linear correlation between HDL levels and spirometry/imaging parameters, with an inflection point at 4.2 (66 mg/dL). When Ln (HDL) was below 4.2, each unit increase correlated significantly with reduced post-bronchodilator FEV1 (0.32L, 95% CI: 0.09– 0.55), decreased predicted FEV1% (11.0%, 95% CI: 2.7– 19.3), and lowered FEV1/FVC (8.0%, 95% CI: 4.0– 12.0), along with notable increases in Ln (LAA− 950) by 1.20 (95% CI: 0.60– 1.79) and Ln (LAA− 856) by 0.77 (95% CI: 0.37– 1.17). However, no significant associations were observed when Ln (HDL) was greater than or equal to 4.2.Conclusion: A non-linear correlation existed between HDL levels with lung function and CT imaging in COPD patients. Abstract

The long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by DAMA deep underground at Gran Sasso Laboratory with different experimental configurations is summarized and perspectives will be highlighted. DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 set-up, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl) confirms the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature at high C.L.; the full exposure is 2.86 ton $\times$ yr over 22 annual cycles. The experiment is currently collecting data in the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 empowered configuration with an even lower software energy threshold. They were divided into a “non-re-positive” group and a “re-positive” group based on the number of COVID-19 infections, and into a training set and a validation set at a 7:3 ratio. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was used to identify predictive factors for COVID-19 re-positivity in malnourished older adults, and a nomogram was constructed. Independent influencing factors were screened by multivariate logistic regression. The model’s goodness-of-fit, discrimination, calibration, and clinical impact were assessed by Hosmer-Lemeshow test, area under the curve (AUC), calibration curve, decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve analysis (CIC), respectively.Results: We included 347 cases, 243 in the training set, and 104 in the validation set. We screened 10 variables as factors influencing the outcome. By multivariate logistic regression analysis, preliminary identified protective factors, risk factors, and independent influencing factors that affect the re-positive outcome. We constructed a clinical prediction model for COVID-19 re-positivity in malnourished older adults. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test yielded χ2 =5.916, P =0.657; the AUC was 0.881; when the threshold probability was > 8%, using this model to predict whether malnourished older adults were re-positive for COVID-19 was more beneficial than implementing intervention programs for all patients; when the threshold was > 80%, the positive estimated value was closer to the actual number of cases.Conclusion: This model can help identify the risk of COVID-19 re-positivity in malnourished older adults early, facilitate early clinical decision-making and intervention, and have important implications for improving patient outcomes. This study examined the network structures of NSSI and depressive symptoms in adolescents.Methods: Participants were recruited in the psychiatric outpatient clinics of three tertiary hospitals between April 10 and July 10, 2023. All participants been already found with self-injury behaviors in outpatient when enrolled. NSSI diagnostic criteria and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were utilized to collect NSSI and depressive symptoms separately. We performed a network analysis to visualize the correlation between each symptom and to identify core and bridging symptoms in comorbidities.Results: A total of 248 patients were enrolled in the study, with a mean age of 15.48 (SD = 1.62). Based on the PHQ-9 scores and grades, our results showed that the incidence of depression in adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury behavior was relatively high (N=235, 94.76%), with the majority having severe depression. The network analysis revealed that nodes D-6 “feeling bad, failing or letting yourself or your family down”, D-1 “little interest or pleasure” and D-4 “feeling tired” were the most vital and most central symptoms. The most crucial bridging symptom is the node NSSI-8 “frequent thinking about self-injury”, which connects the NSSI to the depression comorbid network.Conclusion: This study offers a significant symptom-level conceptualization of the association between NSSI and depressive symptoms in a clinical sample of adolescents, which not only enhances our understanding of the comorbid but also identifies potential treatment targets to prevent and treat comorbidity between adolescent NSSI and depression.Keywords: non-suicidal self-injury, depression, comorbidity network, bridge symptoms, network analysis

10. Examining the Effects of Irradiation Temperature on Defect Generation and the Nature of Dislocation Loops

Abstract

Unlike the vast amount of irradiated material data that exists for stainless steel internals from LWRs, with high fast neutron flux and an irradiation temperature of~330oC, the CANDU reactor is unique with a high thermal spectrum stainless steel components peripheral to the core. In particular, the CANDU design contains an austenitic stainless steel calandria vessel, which contains the heavy water moderator at a temperature of 60-80oC. This article explores the effects of low (60-80oC) and moderate (300-360oC) irradiation temperature on irradiation induced defects and defect sinks, both in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties of Grade 304L stainless steel, irradiated with 3 MeV protons. State-of-the-art microscopy has been applied to characterize the irradiation defects, and nano-indentation performed to provide a link with the mechanical properties. It is hypothesized that the interstitial type of loops that develop is highly temperature dependent, and the formation of the defect loops is strongly linked with the amount of radiation induced segregation.

Abstract

Solid usually becomes harder and tougher under compression, and turns softer at elevated temperature. Recently, compression-induced softening and heating-induced hardening (CISHIH) dual anomaly was predicted in group VB elements such as vanadium. Here, the evidence for this counterintuitive phenomenon is reported. By using accurate high-temperature high-pressure sound velocities measured at Hugoniot states generated by shock-waves, together with first-principles calculations, we observe not only the prominent compression-induced sound velocity reduction, but also strong heating-induced sound velocity enhancement, in shocked vanadium. The former corresponds to the softening in shear modulus by compression, whereas the latter reflects the reverse hardening by heat. These experiments also unveil another anomaly in Young's modulus that wasn't reported before. Based on the experimental and theoretical data, we infer that vanadium might transition from BCC into two different rhombohedral (RH1 and RH2) phases at about 79GPa and 116GPa along the Hugoniot, respectively, which implies a dramatic difference in static and dynamic loading, as well as the significance of deviatoric stress and rate-relevant effects in high-pressure phase transition dynamics., Comment: 43 pages, 16 figures, with Supplementary Material

12. Dynamical localization in non-Hermitian quasi-crystals

Abstract

We study the localization transition in periodically driven one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattices where the piece-wise two-step drive is constituted by uniform coherent tunneling and incommensurate onsite gain and loss. We find that the system can be in localized, delocalized, or mixed-phase depending on the driving frequency and the phase shift of complex potential. Two critical driving frequencies of the system are identified, the first one corresponds to the largest phase shift of the complex potential so that the quasi-energy spectrum is still real and all the states are extended, the second one corresponds to the disappear of full real spectrum, and very weak complex potential leads to the emergence of localized states when the driving frequency is lower than this critical frequency. In the high frequency limit, we find the critical phase shift that separates the two regions with respectively real and complex spectrum tends to a constant value that can be captured by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Abstract

Experimental observations and theoretical arguments point out that Dark Matter (DM) particles are one of the most prominent component of the Universe. This motivated the pioneer DAMA experiment to investigate the presence of these particles in the galactic halo, by exploiting the model independent signature of the DM annual modulation of the rate and very highly radio-pure apparatus in underground site. In this paper the results obtained by other two annual cycles of DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 are presented and the long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by DAMA deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. with different experimental configurations is summarized. The improved experimental configuration of DAMA/LIBRA-phase2, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl), allowed to lower the software energy threshold. The total exposure of DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 over 8 annual cycles is 1.53 ton $\times$ yr. DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 confirms the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature, at 11.8 $\sigma$ C.L. in the energy region (1-6) keV. In the energy region between 2 and 6 keV, where data are also available from DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 (2.86 ton $\times$ yr), the achieved C.L. is 13.7 $\sigma$; the modulation amplitude of the single-hit scintillation events is: $(0.01014 \pm 0.00074)$ cpd/kg/keV, the measured phase is $(142.4 \pm 4.2)$ days and the measured period is $(0.99834 \pm 0.00067)$ yr, all these values are well in agreement with those expected for DM particles. Because pregnant women who choose cesarean section are awake during the perioperative period, to ensure safety, the degree of cooperation about psychology and behavior is relatively high, so we should know the psychological state of such a group of people.Objective: This study aims to explore psychological experience and influential factors of pregnant women who decided elective caesarean section after the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital in Shanghai, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we selected pregnant women who selected elective cesarean section as the study objects, all participants provided informed consent and completed questionnaires, including sociodemographic questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) and General Well-Being Schedule (GWBS). Software SPSS 23.0 was used to analyze and explore the influencing factors.Results: Eligible 595 questionnaires were included in the study, the mean score of GAD-7 was 4.855 ± 3.254 and 90.699 ± 13.807 of GWBS. Generalized linear regression analysis revealed several factors that were statistically significant with the two scales, including birthplace, average monthly income, number of abortion and pregnancy complication (p < 0.01).Conclusion: The COVID-19 infection status and symptoms around infection have no statistical difference in anxiety level and general well-being after they experience the COVID-19 pandemic. However, through this study, we found some influencing factors that worth further exploration. In the future, we will expand the sample size to explore the different situation of multi-center, and we hope provide psychological nursing interventions based on existing results to offer a better delivery experience.Keywords: public health emergency, cesarean section, pregnant woman, psychological experience

In addition, although antibodies developed targeting cytokines (e.g. IL-23, IL-17A, and TNF-α) released by these cells have shown promising results in the treatment of psoriasis patients, these targeted antibodies still do not cure psoriasis and only provide short-term relief of symptoms. Furthermore, long-term use of these antibodies has been reported to have adverse physical and psychological effects on psoriasis patients. Therefore, gaining a deeper understanding of the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of psoriasis and providing new thoughts on the development of psoriasis therapeutic drugs is of great necessity. 18. Discrete time-crystalline order in Bose-Hubbard model with dissipation

Abstract

Periodically driven quantum systems manifest various non-equilibrium features which are absent at equilibrium. For example, discrete time-translation symmetry can be broken in periodically driven quantum systems leading to an exotic phase of matter, called discrete time crystal(DTC). For open quantum systems, previous studies showed that DTC can be found only when there exists a meta-stable state in the undriven system. However, by investigating the simplest Bose-Hubbard model with dissipation and time periodically tunneling, we find in this paper that a $2T$ DTC can appear even when the meta-stable state is absent in the undriven system. This observation extends the understanding of DTC and shed more light on the physics behind the DTC. Besides, by the detailed analysis of simplest two-sites model, we show further that the two-sites model can be used as basic building blocks to construct large rings in which a $nT$ DTC might appear. These results might find applications into engineering exotic phases in driven open quantum systems.

Alopecia, a T cells-driven disorder of the hair follicles (HFs), is a common complication in the development of psoriasis. However, the role of IL-33 in psoriatic alopecia remains uncovered. Here, we investigated the roles of IL-33 in inducing pathological changes of hair follicles in psoriasis.Patients and Methods: Clinical samples and imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriatic mice samples were used to investigate the pathological changes and T-cell infiltration of HFs. By using immunohistochemistry staining, the distribution and expression alteration of IL-33 in HFs were determined. Next, by using IL-33 and ST2 knockout mice, we investigated the role of IL-33/ST2 axis in the pathological changes of HFs in psoriasis. Meanwhile, recombinant IL-33 protein was subcutaneous injected to confirm its effect. Finally, RNA sequencing was used to clarify the genes and signaling pathways that involved in this process. Differentially expressed genes were further verified by RT-PCR in cultured HFs in vitro.Results: We found that the pathological changes of HFs and T cells infiltration in imiquimod-induced psoriatic mice were similar to that in psoriasis patients. The IL-33 positive keratinocytes in the outer root sheath of HFs were increased in both psoriasis patients and psoriatic model mice compared with the controls. By using gene knockout mice, we found that the pathological changes and T cell infiltration were attenuated in IL-33−/− and ST2−/− psoriatic model mice. In addition, subcutaneous injection of recombinant IL-33 exacerbated the pathological changes of HFs and T cell infiltration. RNA sequencing and RT-RCR revealed that IL-33 upregulated the transcription of genes related to keratinocytes proliferation and T lymphocytes chemotaxis.Conclusion: Our study identifies that IL-33 promotes the pathological changes of HFs in psoriasis, which contributes to psoriatic alopecia. Very few patients actually substantially benefit from treatment with sorafenib, and the overall efficacy of the drug has not been satisfactory; therefore, sorafenib has attracted considerable research attention. Abstract

The first model independent results obtained by the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 experiment are presented. The data have been collected over 6 annual cycles corresponding to a total exposure of 1.13 ton $\times$ yr, deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. The DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 apparatus, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl), profits from a second generation high quantum efficiency photomultipliers and of new electronics with respect to DAMA/LIBRA-phase1. The improved experimental configuration has also allowed to lower the software energy threshold. New data analysis strategies are presented. The DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 data confirm the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter (DM) annual modulation signature, at 9.5 $\sigma$ C.L. in the energy region (1-6) keV. In the energy region between 2 and 6 keV, where data are also available from DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 (exposure $1.33$ ton $\times$ yr, collected over 14 annual cycles), the achieved C.L. for the full exposure (2.46 ton $\times$ yr) is 12.9 $\sigma$; the modulation amplitude of the single-hit scintillation events is: $(0.0103 \pm 0.0008)$ cpd/kg/keV, the measured phase is $(145 \pm 5)$ days and the measured period is $(0.999 \pm 0.001)$ yr, all these values are well in agreement with those expected for DM particles. Abstract

The adiabatic theorem is an important concept in quantum mechanics, it tells that a quantum system subjected to gradually changing external conditions remains to the same instantaneous eigenstate of its Hamiltonian as it initially in. In this paper, we study the another extreme circumstance where the external conditions vary rapidly such that the quantum system can not follow the change and remains in its initial state (or wavefunction). We call this type of evolution anit-adiabatic evolution. We examine the matter-wave pressure in this situation and derive the condition for such an evolution. The study is conducted by considering a quantum particle in an infinitely deep potential, the potential width $Q$ is assumed to be change rapidly. We show that the total energy of the quantum subsystem decreases as $Q$ increases, and this rapidly change exerts a force on the wall which plays the role of boundary of the potential. Abstract

Stimulation with ultrafast light pulses can realize and manipulate states of matter with emergent structural, electronic and magnetic phenomena. However, these non-equilibrium phases are often transient and the challenge is to stabilize them as persistent states. Here, we show that atomic-scale PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, counterpoising strain and polarization states in alternate layers, are converted by sub-picosecond optical pulses to a supercrystal phase. This phase persists indefinitely under ambient conditions, has not been created via equilibrium routes, and can be erased by heating. X-ray scattering and microscopy show this unusual phase consists of a coherent three-dimensional structure with polar, strain and charge-ordering periodicities of up to 30 nm. By adjusting only dielectric properties, the phase-field model describes this emergent phase as a photo-induced charge-stabilized supercrystal formed from a two-phase equilibrium state. Our results demonstrate opportunities for light-activated pathways to thermally inaccessible and emergent metastable states.

30. Entangled state fusion with Rydberg atoms

Abstract

We propose a scheme for preparation of large-scale entangled $GHZ$ states and $W$ states with neutral Rydberg atoms. The scheme mainly depends on Rydberg antiblockade effect, i.e., as the Rydberg-Rydberg-interaction (RRI) strength and the detuning between the atom transition frequency and the classical laser frequency satisfies some certain conditions, the effective Rabi oscillation between the two ground states and the two excitation Rydberg states would be generated. The prominent advantage is that both two-multiparticle $GHZ$ states and two-multiparticle $W$ states can be fused in this model, especially the success probability for fusion of $GHZ$ states can reach unit. 31. Generalized Floquet theory for open quantum systems

For a periodically driven open quantum system, the Floquet theorem states that the time evolution operator $\Lambda(t,0)$ of the system can be factorized as $\Lambda(t,0)=\mathcal{D}(t)e^{\mathcal{L}_{eff}t}$ with micro-motion operator $\mathcal{D}(t)$ possessing the same period as the external driving, and time-independent operator $\mathcal{L}_{eff}$. In this work, we extend this theorem to open systems that follow a modulated periodic evolution, in which the fast part is periodic while the slow part breaks the periodicity. We derive a factorization for the time evolution operator that separates the long time dynamics and the micro-motion for the open quantum system. High-frequency expansions for the effective evolution operator control the long time dynamics, and the micro-motion operator is also given and discussed. It may find applications in quantum engineering with open systems following modulated periodic evolution.

Abstract

The inorganic crystals have been widely used for dark matter direct searching for many decades. However, limited by the crystal growth technique, a lot of small crystals have to be used together for large target mass, which results in a degradation of light collection efficiency. An experiment was built up to study the degradation, and the method of soaking crystals into mineral oil to improve the efficiency as well as reduce the interface effect were proposed and validated. Good data and MC agreements were achieved in the experiment.

Abstract

The DAMA/LIBRA experiment ($\sim$ 250 kg of highly radio-pure NaI(Tl)) is running deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. Here we briefly recall the results obtained in its first phase of measurements (DAMA/LIBRA--phase1, total exposure: 1.04 ton $\times$ yr). DAMA/LIBRA--phase1 and the former DAMA/NaI (cumulative exposure: $1.33$ ton $\times$ yr) give evidence at 9.3 $\sigma$ C.L. for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo by exploiting the model-independent DM annual modulation signature. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature has been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade. Doppler optical coherence tomography (DOCT) is considered one of the most promising functional imaging modalities for neuro biology research and has demonstrated the ability to quantify cerebral blood flow velocity at a high accuracy. However, the measurement of total absolute blood flow velocity (BFV) of major cerebral arteries is still a difficult problem since it not only relates to the properties of the laser and the scattering particles, but also relates to the geometry of both directions of the laser beam and the flow. In this paper, focusing on the analysis of cerebral hemodynamics, we presents a method to quantify the total absolute blood flow velocity in middle cerebral artery (MCA) based on volumetric vessel reconstruction from pure DOCT images. A modified region growing segmentation method is first used to localize the MCA on successive DOCT B-scan images. Vessel skeletonization, followed by an averaging gradient angle calculation method, is then carried out to obtain Doppler angles along the entire MCA. Once the Doppler angles are determined, the absolute blood flow velocity of each position on the MCA is easily found. Given a seed point position on the MCA, our approach could achieve automatic quantification of the fully distributed absolute BFV. Based on experiments conducted using a swept-source optical coherence tomography system, our approach could achieve automatic quantification of the fully distributed absolute BFV across different vessel branches in the rodent brain.

39. Preparation of C=C polymerization-oriented magnetic protein molecularly imprinted polymer and the application for membrane flux improvement

Abstract

This study aims to prepare a novel C=C polymerization-oriented magnetic protein molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) to improve membrane flux by adsorbing protein-type membrane foulants. The adsorption capabilities of MMIP were assessed by batch experiments, and the oriented polymerization and adsorption mechanisms were further revealed by density functional theory (DFT). The findings suggested that the MMIP exhibited a favorable adsorption capacity (35.9 mg/g) and high specificity (imprinting factor, IF = 2.2) to bovine serum albumin (BSA), and showed an impressive adsorption capacity (21.2 mg/g) to protein-type substances in soluble microbial products (SMPs) derived from a functioning membrane bioreactor. Consequently, the MMIP reduced the filtration resistance by approximately 91.6 % compared to the control group and improved the membrane flux. Moreover, the data confirmed that the adsorption was a monolayer adsorption process in which chemical interactions dominated the rate-limiting step. DFT calculations proved that the functional monomer chain reactions predominantly occurred on C=C bonds in the oriented polymerization and the hydrogen bonding was identified as the main interaction between MMIP and protein in the adsorption. These findings suggested that the MMIP holds great potential as a recyclable adsorbent for effectively improving membrane flux through the selective adsorption of protein-type membrane foulants.

40. A Single-Antenna Full-Duplex Subsystem With High Isolation and High Gain

Abstract

In this paper, a single-antenna full-duplex subsystem is proposed, consisting of a high isolation network and a stacked patch antenna with reflector. The employed patch antenna is fed by two ports with very similar input impedances to make the reflected signals identical. The high isolation network composed of two hybrids and two circulators plays a crucial part in achieving high transmitting to receiving (Tx-Rx) isolation. It is able to cancel out the inevitable reflected signals from the antenna ports and the leakage signals from the circulators. The theoretical analysis is presented and the subsystem is also fabricated and measured. According to the measurement results, across the operation band from 2.018 to 2.12 GHz, the subsystem has VSWR < 1.55, Tx-Rx isolation > 50 dB, axial ratio < 2.4, and gain > 10.2 dBic. Compared with the state-of-art single-antenna full-duplex subsystems, the proposed design features high Tx-Rx isolation level and high gain, which is suitable for microwave radio relay communication and satellite detection application.

Abstract

For a closed system with periodic driving, Floquet theorem tells that the time evolution operator can be written as $ U(t,0)\equiv P(t)e^{\frac{-i}{\hbar}H_F t}$ with $P(t+T)=P(t)$, and $H_F$ is Hermitian and time-independent called Floquet Hamiltonian. In this work, we extend the Floquet theorem from closed systems to open systems described by a Lindblad master equation that is periodic in time. Lindbladian expansion in powers of $\frac 1 \omega$ is derived, where $\omega$ is the driving frequency. Two examples are presented to illustrate the theory. We find that appropriate trace preserving time-independent Lindbladian of such a periodically driven system can be constructed by the application of open system Floquet theory, and it agrees well with the exact dynamics in the high frequency limit., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present an automatic segmentation method for delineation and quantitative thickness measurement of multiple layers in endoscopic airway optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The boundaries of the mucosa and the sub-mucosa layers were extracted using a graph-theory-based dynamic programming algorithm. The algorithm was tested with pig airway OCT images acquired with a custom built long range endoscopic OCT system. The performance of the algorithm was demonstrated by cross-validation between auto and manual segmentation experiments. Quantitative thicknesses changes in the mucosal layers are obtained automatically for smoke inhalation injury experiments.

Abstract

Experimental realization of a universal set of quantum logic gates is the central requirement for implementation of a quantum computer. An all-geometric approach to quantum computation offered a paradigm for implementation where all the quantum gates are achieved based on the Berry phases and their non-abelian extensions, the holonomies, from geometric transformation of quantum states in the Hilbert space. Apart from its fundamental interest and rich mathematical structure, the geometric approach has some built-in noise-resilient features. On the experimental side, geometric phases and holonomies have been observed using nuclear magnetic resonance with thermal ensembles of liquid molecules, however, such systems are known to be non-scalable for quantum computing. There are proposals to implement geometric quantum computation in scalable experimental platforms such as trapped ions, superconducting qubits, or quantum dots, and a recent experiment has realized geometric single-bit gates with the superconducting system. Here, we report the experimental realization of a universal set of geometric quantum gates with solid-state spins of the diamond defects. The diamond defects provide a scalable experimental platform with the potential for room-temperature quantum computing, which has attracted strong interest in recent years. Based on advance of coherent control in this system, our experiment shows that all-geometric and potentially robust quantum computation can be realized with solid-state spin qubits.

The results obtained in the search for possible diurnal effect in the single-hit low energy data collected by DAMA/LIBRA-phase1 (total exposure: 1.04 ton x yr) deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. are presented. At the present level of sensitivity the presence of any significant diurnal variation and of diurnal time structures in the data can be excluded for both the cases of solar and sidereal time. Abstract

The DAMA/LIBRA experiment is composed by about 250 kg of highly radiopure NaI(Tl). It is in operation at the underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN. The main aim of the experiment is to investigate the Dark Matter (DM) particles in the Galactic halo by exploiting the model independent DM annual modulation signature. The DAMA/LIBRA experiment and the former DAMA/NaI (the first generation experiment having an exposed mass of about 100 kg) have released results corresponding to a total exposure of 1.17 ton $\times$ yr over 13 annual cycles; they have provided a model independent evidence of the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo at 8.9 $\sigma$ C.L.. The results of a further annual cycle, concluding the DAMA/LIBRA--phase1, have been released after this Workshop and are not included here. In the fall 2010 an important upgrade of the experiment have been performed. All the PMTs of the NaI(Tl) detectors have been replaced with new ones having higher quantum efficiency with the aim to decrease the software energy threshold considered in the data analysis.
