Background The benefits of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for distal medium vessel occlusions (DMVOs) are not well established. This study aimed to determine the superiority of EVT over intravenous tissue‐type plasminogen activator (IV tPA) in the treatment of DMVOs. Methods This study analyzed data from the Kanagawa Intravenous and Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke Registry, a prospective, multicenter, observational registry of acute ischemic stroke patients treated with EVT or IV tPA. The study evaluated patients with acute DMVOs who were treated with EVT and/or IV tPA. DMVOs was defined as occlusions in M2–M3 segment of the middle cerebral artery, anterior cerebral artery, or posterior cerebral artery. The analysis included primary DMVOs and excluded secondary DMVOs, such as distal embolism after recanalization of proximal vessel occlusion. Propensity score‐matched analysis was conducted to compare the outcomes between EVT and IV tPA alone. A good outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score 0–2 or no worsening at 90 days. An excellent outcome was defined as an modified Rankin Scale score 0–1. Results The study included 1148 patients with DMVOs, of whom 816 were treated with EVT and 332 were IV tPA alone. This paper describes a consideration of the difference in wheel/rail tangential contact force characteristics between in running tests and in laboratory experiments. To improve the accuracy of vehicle dynamics analysis, it is important to obtain the relationship between the tangential contact force coefficient and the slip ratio under realistic conditions. Since these characteristics cannot be obtained by numerical analysis, running tests on commercial lines and laboratory experiments using a twin-disk rolling machine are carried out. On the other hand, under conditions of high slip ratios, these characteristics differ between cases where the tangential contact force coefficient between wheel/rail remains contact and cases where the tangential contact force coefficient decreases. In this study, focusing on the state of the coefficient of friction between wheel/rail, a 3D-MBD model which can simulate vehicle behavior during braking was constructed on the SIMPACK commercial software, and these different reasons and their relationships were discussed. The result clarified that the difference in these characteristics is due to whether the friction coefficient on the contact surface is constant or fluctuating during the measurement by numerical analysis. That is, the characteristics measured in laboratory experiments can be modeled by Kalker’s rolling contact theory with a constant friction coefficient, and the characteristics measured in running tests can be modeled by combining the characteristics obtained by the Kalker’s theory under the conditions of different friction coefficients at each running distance.

Abstract The underwater environment is filled with various sounds, with its soundscape composed of biological, geographical, and anthropological sounds. Our work focused on developing a novel method to observe and classify these sounds, enriching our understanding of the underwater ecosystem. We constructed a biologging system allowing near-real-time observation of underwater soundscapes. Utilizing deep-learning-based edge processing, this system classifies the sources of sounds, and upon the tagged animal surfacing, it transmits positional data, results of sound source classification, and sensor readings such as depth and temperature. To test the system, we attached the logger to sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and collected data through a cellular network. The data provided information on the location-specific sounds detected by the sea turtles, suggesting the possibility to infer the distribution of specific species of organisms over time. The data showed that not only biological sounds but also geographical and anthropological sounds can be classified, highlighting the potential for conducting multi-point and long-term observations to monitor the distribution patterns of various sound sources. This system, which can be considered an autonomous mobile platform for oceanographic observations, including soundscapes, has significant potential to enhance our understanding of acoustic diversity.

Abstract Drosophila melanogaster has a pair of male-specific muscles called the muscle of Lawrence (MOL) in abdominal segment 5 (A5) of adult flies. The MOL is produced only when its innervating motoneuron expresses FruitlessM (FruM) neural masculinizing proteins. We show that MOL induction is hampered by: (1) silencing electrical activities in the motoneuron, (2) blocking vesicular release from the motoneuron, and (3) knocking down Activin ß (Actß) in the motoneuron or knocking down Actß signaling pathway components in the myoblasts. Our timelapse live imaging of the developing neuromuscular system reveals that, upon contact with the presumptive MOL, the motoneuronal axon retracts concomitant with the progression of MOL degeneration resulting from neural silencing. We conclude that MOL formation depends on the bidirectional trophic interactions between pre- and postsynaptic cells, with motoneuron-derived Actß playing an inducing role in MOL formation.

Endovascular therapy (EVT) for real-world patients after extended time frames is associated with concerns about its efficacy and safety. We conducted a prospective registry at 77 centers between November 2019 and October 2020. The registry criteria included patients treated with Trevo Retriever alone or in combined therapy with an aspiration catheter. The primary outcome was effective reperfusion (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction grade 2b), the secondary outcome was a modified Rankin scale 0-2 at 90 days, and the safety outcomes were worsening of neurologic symptoms within 24 h postoperatively, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) within 24 h after EVT and mortality. We also exlpored the difference between patients whose last known well time (LKWT) to a puncture was less than 6 h (0-6 h) and those whose LKWT was 6 h or more but less than 24 h (6-24 h). Among the 1041 patients registered, 1025 patients were analyzed. The mean age was 76.9 years, and 53.6% of the participants were males. The 6-24 h group was 206/998 (20.6%), the median National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score at admission was 18, and the median Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score was 8. Combined technique as the first pass was used on 817 (79.7%) patients. The primary outcome was 934 (91.1%). The secondary outcome was 433/1021 (42.4%). Symptomatic ICH, any ICH, and mortality were 10/1019 (1.0%), 311/1019 (30.5%), and 75 (7.3%). Unilateral subcortical calcifications are unique radiographic findings indicating specific focal pathologies. When the lesion is accompanied by edema, cerebral neoplasm usually leads to a differential diagnosis. This report presents a case of unilateral subcortical calcification and edema that resulted in cerebral hemorrhage and a subsequent diagnosis of an aggressive dural arteriovenous fistula. A man in his 60s presented with left hemianopsia and a progressive headache for over 6 months. Initial computed tomography revealed unilateral subcortical calcification and cerebral edema in the right occipital lobe, raising the suspicion of oligodendroglioma. However, 10 days later, a cerebral hemorrhage occurred in the lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed flow void clusters and dilatation of the bilateral external carotid arteries and cortical veins, indicating a dural arteriovenous fistula. Cerebral angiography confirmed the presence of a parasagittal dural arteriovenous fistula (Borden type III). The patient was successfully treated with trans-arterial embolization using Onyx. Thus, calcifications with edema are more commonly associated with cerebral neoplasms; however, in this case, they indicated the presence of a dural arteriovenous fistula with severe corticovenous reflux. The presented case highlights the importance of recognizing these imaging features in dural arteriovenous fistulas and raises awareness of the potential danger of early hemorrhage after diagnosis. Therefore, timely evaluation of cranial vessels is essential in cases of unilateral subcortical calcification and edema to facilitate the early detection and management of aggressive dural arteriovenous fistulas.

Introduction: Leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein (LRG) is a potential biomarker for disease activity and reflects mucosal healing in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). However, only a few studies have described a detailed sensitivity analysis of LRG in predicting mucosal healing in patients. This study aimed to evaluate the association between LRG and the endoscopic activity of UC and its predictability for mucosal healing and explore the utility and clinical application of LRG. Methods: The diagnostic accuracy of biomarkers, including LRG, in predicting the endoscopic activity of UC was evaluated. All consecutive patients who underwent total colonoscopy between April 2021 and September 2022 were included. The Mayo endoscopic subscore (MES) was used for assessing endoscopic activity. Furthermore, endoscopic remission was defined as an MES of ≤1. Clinical activity was evaluated based on stool frequency and bloody stool. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and binary logistic regression were performed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of the biomarkers. We evaluated LRG trends and treatment response in patients with MES ≥2 who underwent induction therapy. Results: This study comprised 214 patients. The proportions of endoscopically and clinically active patients were 33.6% and 49.1%, respectively. LRG had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.856, with a higher diagnostic accuracy than other biomarkers, such as C-reactive protein, leukocyte, neutrophil, platelet, and albumin. The cutoff value for LRG was 15.6 μg/mL (sensitivity, 72.2%; specificity, 86.6%). Using the MES, patients with higher scores had higher LRG levels than those with lower scores. The cutoff value, AUC, sensitivity, and specificity varied with a higher AUC for left-sided colitis and pancolitis than for proctitis. Logistic regression analysis showed that LRG was an independent predictor of endoscopic remission using multivariate analysis, even with the factor of clinical activity. The change ratio of LRG pre- and post-treatment was statistically significant in the higher LRG group. Conclusion: LRG reflected endoscopic activity independently, regardless of clinical symptoms. An LRG below the cutoff value could indicate a significantly low probability of endoscopic activity in asymptomatic patients, and follow-up endoscopy (not for cancer screening) may be unnecessary. Furthermore, a higher LRG level might be more useful as an indicator of treatment efficacy.

The alkali–silica reaction (ASR), a major cause of cracks in concrete, is a critical issue in the maintenance of social infrastructure. In this study, a concrete mesoscale model was meticulously developed, and a coupled stress–moisture model was also developed to reproduce ASR degradation. The aim was to investigate the effect of ASR degradation on the bending load-carrying capacity of RC beams. The concrete mesoscale model, specifically designed to reproduce ASR degradation, was modeled from three phases: coarse aggregate, mortar, and ITZ (interfacial transition zone). ASR was considered as the expansion of the coarse aggregate, and the objective was to reproduce expansion cracks with numerical analysis using the mesoscale model. Uniaxial compression tests were carried out on cylindrical specimens with ASR-accelerated deterioration to clarify the relationship between ASR deterioration and compressive properties, and the experimental results were used to identify material parameters in the mesoscale analysis model. The results showed that the model proposed in this study can reproduce the change in compressive properties due to expansion cracking. Finally, RC beams were constructed using the mesoscale model, and the effect of ASR degradation on the bending load-carrying capacity of the RC beams was investigated. The results showed that the presence of expansion cracks caused the initial stiffness of the load-displacement curves to decrease, but the bearing capacity tended to increase. This suggests that factors other than cracks, such as chemical prestress and boundary conditions in this model, have a strong influence on the load-bearing capacity of deteriorated RC beams.

Eccentric exercise induces muscle damage and inflammation, resulting in a state of reduced physical activity with muscle dysfunction and a feeling of tiredness after exercise. Creatine is known to act as an energy buffer, but it has also been suggested to exert inhibitory effects on muscle damage and peripheral inflammation. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that creatine supplementation alleviates fatigue after eccentric exercise and to explore the mechanism of this effect. C57BL/6J mice were fed an AIN-93G-formulated control diet or a creatine-containing diet for 6 days and were then subjected to downhill running, a model of eccentric exercise, to assess the effects on the total creatine concentrations in skeletal muscle and brain tissue, spontaneous activity, the urine concentration of titin N-fragment, and inflammatory gene expression. The results showed that creatine supplementation significantly increased the total creatine concentrations in skeletal muscle and brain tissue. Furthermore, spontaneous activity significantly decreased after downhill running and creatine supplementation maintained a significantly higher level of spontaneous activity. In addition, creatine supplementation significantly suppressed the downhill-running-induced increase in the mRNA expression of genes encoding ICAM-1, E-selectin, CD18, and BKB1R in the soleus muscle and IL-1β in the hypothalamus. On the other hand, creatine supplementation did not clearly influence the urine concentration of titin N-fragment. These results indicate that creatine supplementation may alleviate fatigue after eccentric exercise by partially suppressing inflammation in slow-twitch skeletal muscle and brain tissue.

Metal fixation systems for cranial bone flaps cut by a drill are convenient devices for cranioplasty, but cause several complications. We use modified craniotomy using a fine diamond-coated threadwire saw (diamond T-saw) to reduce the bone defect, and osteoplasty calcium phosphate cement without metal fixation. We report our outcomes and tips of this method. A total of 78 consecutive patients underwent elective frontotemporal craniotomy for clipping of unruptured intracranial aneurysms between 2015 and 2019. The follow-up periods ranged from 13 to 66 months. The bone fixation state was evaluated by bone computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional CT (3D-CT). The diamond T-saw could minimize the bone defect. Only one wound infection occurred within 1 week postoperatively, and no late infection. No pain, palpable/cosmetically noticeable displacement of the bone flap, fluid accumulations, or other complications were observed. The condition of bone fixation and the cosmetic efficacy were thoroughly satisfactory for all patients, and bone CT and 3D-CT demonstrated that good bone fusion. No complication typical of metal fixation occurred. Our method is technically easy and safety, and achieved good mid-term bone flap fixation in the mid-term course, so has potential for bone fixation without the use of metal plates.

Summary: KcsA is a potassium channel with a plethora of structural and functional information, but its activity in the KcsA-producing actinomycete membranes remains elusive. To determine lipid species involved in channel-modulation, a surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based methodology, characterized by immobilization of membrane proteins under a membrane environment, was applied. Dianionic cardiolipin (CL) showed extremely higher affinity for KcsA than monoanionic lipids. The SPR experiments further demonstrated that CL bound not only to the N-terminal M0 helix, a lipid-sensor domain, but to the M0 helix-deleted mutant. In contrast, monoanionic lipids interacted primarily with the M0 helix. This indicates the presence of an alternative CL-binding site, plausibly in the transmembrane domain. Single-channel recordings demonstrated that CL enhanced channel opening in an M0-independent manner. Taken together, the action of monoanionic lipids is exclusively mediated by the M0 helix, while CL binds both the M0 helix and its specific site, further enhancing the channel activity.

Behavioral sex differences primarily derive from the sexually dimorphic organization of neural circuits that direct the behavior. In Drosophila melanogaster, the sex-determination genes fruitless (fru) and doublesex (dsx) play pivotal roles in producing the sexual dimorphism of neural circuits for behavior. Here we examine three neural groups expressing fru and/or dsx, i.e., the P1 cluster, aSP-f and aSP-g cluster pairs and aDN cluster, in which causal relationships between the dimorphic behavior and dimorphic neural characteristics are best illustrated. aSP-f, aSP-g and aDN clusters represent examples where fru or dsx switches cell-autonomously their neurite structures between the female-type and male-type. Processed sensory inputs impinging on these neurons may result in outputs that encode different valences, which culminate in the execution of distinct behavior according to the sex. In contrast, the P1 cluster is male-specific as its female counterpart undergoes dsx-driven cell death, which lowers the threshold for the induction of male-specific behaviors. We propose that the products of fru and dsx genes, as terminal selectors in sexually dimorphic neuronal wiring, induce and maintain the sex-typical chromatin state at postembryonic stages, orchestrating the transcription of effector genes that shape single neuron structures and govern cell survival and death.

Background: Blunt traumatic vertebral artery injury is commonly associated with head and cervical spinal trauma. However, those associated with chest or upper extremity injuries without cervical spine-related trauma are rare. Case presentation: A 94-year-old woman was injured in a motor vehicle crash. She was diagnosed with traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, bilateral subdural hematomas, right vertebral artery injury, and right clavicle fracture. No cervical spine injuries were observed. It was possible that the fracture fragment of the right clavicle may have directly injured the right vertebral artery. Coil embolization was performed for the vertebral artery injury. The patient had a good postoperative course and was transferred to the hospital for rehabilitation on day 65. Conclusion: Regarding the high-risk injury mechanism, blunt traumatic vertebral artery injuries in the V1–2 segment may occur in cases with clavicle fractures.

We focus on three-component SU(3) Fermi gases loaded into a square optical lattice, with population imbalance between one component and the others. At strong coupling the system is described by the SU(3) Heisenberg model with an external field that couples to the population imbalance. We discuss the ground state at the mean-field level and then analyze the thermal fluctuations with the semiclassical Monte Carlo method. The interplay of interactions, population imbalance, and thermal fluctuations gives rise to a phase transition linked to the breaking of an emergent Ising symmetry, despite the absence of frustration. This represents another scenario of discrete symmetry breaking in low-dimensional systems with continuous symmetries. Possible implementations with cold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms are discussed.

This paper describes a practical wheel/rail tangential contact force model for railway dynamics analysis under running in rainy conditions. In our previous studies, it was confirmed that experimental results of tangential contact force measurement are agree well with Kalker’s rolling contact theory under dry condition with low humidity around contact surfaces. Here, it can be considered that if the ambient humidity around the contact surface become high infinity, the contact surface is under wet lubrication conditions. On the basis of this assumption, in this study, a practical estimation model for characteristics of tangential contact force under running in rainy conditions is proposed by combining the relationship between the adhesive coefficient and velocity measured on running experiments using actual railway vehicles and Kalker’s linear rolling contact theory. Therefore, to verify the proposed model, the tangential contact force measurement experiment using a twin-disk rolling sliding machine was carried out. As a result, it is confirmed that estimated formulae based on the proposed model are well agreed with experimental results even under different velocity conditions, comparing the relationship between tangential contact force coefficient and slip ratio. From these verified results, the proposed model is considered to be a practical wheel/rail tangential contact force model for vehicle dynamics analysis under rain conditions, because the proposed model has the advantage of low calculation cost and can be easily applied to vehicle dynamics analysis based on multi-body dynamics theories.

Abstract Background In Japan, staff who are not doctors or nurses can assist the elderly in residential care facilities to take their pre-packaged medicines. Therefore, there is a potential risk of incidents specific to staffs. The aim of this study was to clarify the causes of incidents related to medication assistance by staff in residential care facilities. Method Semi-structured interviews with staff involved in medication incidents in long-term care facilities, focusing on how and why each incident happened, were conducted. The interview covered basic information about the subject and resident, the circumstances under which the incident had occurred, contributing factors, and countermeasures put in place. Verbatim transcripts of the interviews were prepared. Based on thematic analysis, codes and themes were created. Results Twelve subjects participated in this study. All subjects were staffs (not doctors or nurses) in long-term care facilities. All incidents covered in this study were incidents in which the wrong resident was given the medication. The incidents arose because of “not following procedures”, such as lack of “self-check of residents’ faces/residents’ names/residents’ medicine envelopes” or “double-check with other staff” or “using a device for medication intake”. Contributory factors were grouped into four categories: individual resident factor items such as “decreased ability to understand their medication” or “refusal to take medicines”, individual staff factor items such as “lack of knowledge related to medication” or “mental burden” or “experience in medication assistance”, team factor items such as “failure to communicate with other staff”, work environment factor items such as “presence of other residents” or “other work besides medication assistance” or “not enough time” or “little understanding of fostering a safety culture at the facility”. Conclusion This study identified four categories of contributory factors that may lead to incidents during medication assistance by caregivers for residents of care homes. These findings should be helpful for risk management in residential care facilities where staff usually provide medication assistance. Separation of meal times and medication assistance, and professional review to stagger the timing of administration of residents’ medication may be effective in reducing incidents.

Abstract Background Nasogastric tube syndrome is a rare but life‐threatening complication of nasogastric tube placement due to acute upper airway obstruction caused by bilateral vocal cord paresis. Case Presentation An 86‐year‐old woman was brought to the emergency department with acute stridor. She had been diagnosed with stroke 106 days prior, and an 8F nasogastric tube was placed on the day following the diagnosis. A laryngeal fiberscopy revealed bilateral laryngeal edema and bilateral vocal cord palsy. Nasogastric tube removal and intubation were carried out, and the stridor disappeared. Two days later, a tracheostomy was performed. Unfortunately, the patient's vocal cord function had not improved at the 1 month follow‐up upon assessment with a laryngeal fiberscope. Conclusion Long‐term small‐bore nasogastric tube placement can cause upper airway obstruction due to bilateral vocal cord palsy.

In recent years, the demand for new applications using various Internet of Things (IoT) devices has led to an increase in the number of devices connected to wireless networks. However, owing to the limitation of available frequency resources for IoT devices, the degradation of the communication quality caused by channel congestion is a practical problem in developing IoT technology. Many IoT devices have hardware and software limitations that prevent centralized channel allocation, and congestion is even more severe in massive IoT networks without a central controller. Therefore, developing a distributed and sophisticated channel selection algorithm is necessary. In previous studies, the channel selection of each IoT device was modeled as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem, and a wireless channel selection method based on the MAB algorithm, which is a simple reinforcement learning, was proposed. In particular, it has been shown that the MAB algorithm of tug-of-war (TOW) dynamics can efficiently select channels with much lower computational complexity and power compared with other reinforcement learning-based channel-selection methods. This paper proposes a distributed channel selection method based on TOW dynamics in fully decentralized networks. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method and other distributed channel-selection methods on the communication success rate in massive IoT networks by experiments and simulations. The results show that the proposed method improves the communication success rate more than other distributed channel selection methods even in a dense and dynamic network environment.

Data-driven and feedback cycle-based approaches are necessary to optimize the performance of modern complex wireless communication systems. Machine learning technologies can provide solutions for these requirements. This study shows a comprehensive framework of optimizing wireless communication systems and proposes two optimal decision schemes that have not been well-investigated in existing research. The first one is supervised learning modeling and optimal decision making by optimization, and the second is a simple and implementable reinforcement learning algorithm. The proposed schemes were verified through real-world experiments and computer simulations, which revealed the necessity and validity of this research.

This paper describes the relationship between a tangential contact force and a slip ratio under various wet condition. In previous studies, the effect of difference in watering amount on the tangential contact force characteristics under wheel/rail contact condition has not been clarified quantitatively. In this study, to investigate the effects of various experimental condition such as circumferential velocity of a test wheel, the amount of water, and contact pressure on the tangential contact force characteristics, a tangential contact force measurement experiment was conducted under the condition of maximum circumferential velocity of 130km/h. As a result, if a small amount of water intervenes on the contact surface, we confirm that the tangential contact force under wet condition sharply becomes small about 30% or less of that under dry condition until the circumferential velocity increases to 30km/h; also, we confirm that the faster the circumferential velocity is the smaller the decrease in tangential force becomes. This tendency is the same under all contact pressure conditions and is qualitatively consistent with the actual phenomenon. Furthermore, to investigate the relationship of tangential contact force characteristics between on laboratory experiments and on test runs, we evaluated the relationship using Polach’ evaluation formula with wet model parameters and an adhesive coefficient planning formula. As a result, it is clarified that tangential contact force characteristics of wheels/rails under wet condition can be estimated on laboratory experiments by correctly evaluating a water film on the contact surface between actual wheels and rails.

In real materials, a spin quantum number assumes a fixed value, which makes it challenging to realize a crossover between quantum and classical spin regimes. Here the authors demonstrate such a crossover in a weakly coupled chain compound by controlling the amount of quantum correlations, in the form of the inverse spin quantum number, with external pressure.

Abstract While epigamic traits likely evolve via sexual selection, the mechanism whereby internal sexual dimorphism arises remains less well understood. Seeking clues as to how the internal sexual dimorphism evolved, we compared the abdominal musculature of 41 Drosophila montium group species, to determine whether any of these species carry a male-specific muscle of Lawrence (MOL). Our quantitative analysis revealed that the size of a sexually dimorphic MOL analog found in 19 montium group species varied widely from species to species, suggesting the gradual evolution of this sexually dimorphic neuromuscular trait. We attempted the ancestral state reconstitution for the presence or absence of the neuromuscular sexual dimorphism in the A5 segment; the neuromuscular sexual dimorphism existed in an old ancestor of the montium group, which was lost in some of the most recent common ancestors of derived lineages, and subsequently some species regained it. This loss-and-gain history was not shared by evolutionary changes in the courtship song pattern, even though both traits were commonly regulated by the master regulator male-determinant protein FruM. It is envisaged that different sets of FruM target genes may serve for shaping the song and MOL characteristics, respectively, and, as a consequence, each phenotypic trait underwent a distinct evolutionary path.

We study the emergence of supersolid devil's staircases of spin-orbit-coupled bosons loaded in optical lattices. We consider two- and three-dimensional systems of pseudo-spin-1/2 bosons interacting via local spin-dependent interactions. These interactions together with spin-orbit coupling produce length scales that are commensurate to the lattice spacing. This commensurability leads to devil's staircases of supersolids, with fractal Hausdorff dimensions, which arise from uniform superfluid phases. We show that umklapp processes are essential for the existence of commensurate supersolids, and that without them the devil's staircase does not exist. Lastly, we emphasize the generality of our results, suggest experiments that can unveil these unusual predictions, and discuss potential applications to the case of ^{87}Rb.

Background The AT(N) classification was proposed for categorising individuals according to biomarkers. However, AT(N) profiles may vary depending on the markers chosen and the target population.Methods We stratified 177 individuals who participated in the Japanese Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative by AT(N) classification according to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers. We compared the frequency of AT(N) profiles between the classification using total tau and neurofilament light chain (NfL) as N markers (AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL). Baseline characteristics, and longitudinal biological and clinical changes were examined between AT(N) profiles.Results We found that 9% of cognitively unimpaired subjects, 49% of subjects with mild cognitive impairment, and 61% of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia had the biological AD profile (ie, A+T+) in the cohort. The frequency of AT(N) profiles substantially differed between the AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL classifications. When we used t-tau as the N marker (AT(N)tau), those who had T− were more frequently assigned to (N)−, whereas those who had T+were more frequently assigned to (N)+ than when we used NfL as the N marker (AT(N)NfL). During a follow-up, the AD continuum group progressed clinically and biologically compared with the normal biomarker group in both the AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL classifications. More frequent conversion to dementia was observed in the non-AD pathological change group in the AT(N)tau classification, but not in the AT(N)NfL classification.Conclusions AT(N)tau and AT(N)NfL in CSF may capture different aspects of neurodegeneration and provide a different prognostic value. The AT(N) classification aids in understanding the AD continuum biology in various populations.

Background: Bruton’s tyrosine kinase (BTK) is a non-receptor type tyrosine kinase originally identified as the genetic signature responsible for X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) when mutated. Its functional form is required for B lymphocyte maturation in both humans and mice, whereas loss-of-function causes a different form of developmental defect in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Methods: Ibrutinib and other therapeutic inhibitors of BTK have been extensively used to successfully treat various leukemias and lymphomas. Btk29A type 2 is the ortholog of BTK in the fruit fly. We show that feeding wild-type flies an ibrutinib-containing diet induces phenocopying of Btk29A mutants, i.e., failure in the fusion of left and right halves of the dorsal cuticles, partial loss of wing tissues and dysregulation of germ cell production. Results: We have previously reported that Btk29A phosphorylates Drosophila Arm (β-catenin), and ibrutinib reduces phosphorylation at Tyrosine142 of endogenously expressed β-catenin in Cos7 cells transfected with Btk29A type 2 cDNA. Conclusions: Thus, Drosophila is suitable for screens of novel BTK inhibitor candidates and offers a unique in vivo system in which the mode of action of BTK inhibitors can be examined at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels.

In Drosophila melanogaster, gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) for sugar taste coexpress various combinations of gustatory receptor (Gr) genes and are found in multiple sites in the body. To determine whether diverse sugar GRNs expressing different combinations of Grs have distinct behavioral roles, we examined the effects on feeding behavior of genetic manipulations which promote or suppress functions of GRNs that express either or both of the sugar receptor genesGr5a (Gr5a+ GRNs) and Gr61a (Gr61a+ GRNs). Cell-population-specific overexpression of the wild-type form of Gr5a (Gr5a+) in the Gr5a mutant background revealed that Gr61a+ GRNs localized on the legs and internal mouthpart critically contribute to food choice but not to meal size decisions, while Gr5a+ GRNs, which are broadly expressed in many sugar-responsive cells across the body with an enrichment in the labella, are involved in both food choice and meal size decisions. The legs harbor two classes of Gr61a expressing GRNs, one with Gr5a expression (Gr5a+/Gr61a+ GRNs) and the other without Gr5aexpression (Gr5a−/Gr61a+ GRNs). We found that blocking the Gr5a+ class in the entire body reduced the preference for trehalose and blocking the Gr5a- class reduced the preference for fructose. These two subsets of GRNsare also different in their central projections: axons of tarsal Gr5a+/Gr61a+ GRNs terminate exclusively in the ventral nerve cord, while some axons of tarsal Gr5a−/Gr61a+ GRNs ascend through the cervical connectives to terminate in the subesophageal ganglion. We propose that tarsal Gr5a+/Gr61a+ GRNs and Gr5a−/Gr61a+ GRNs represent functionally distinct sensory pathways that function differently in food preference and meal-size decisions.

Objective:. This cohort study investigated short- and long-term postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic procedures for rectal cancer performed with versus without certified surgeons. Background:. In Japan, the Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System (ESSQS) evaluates surgical skills deemed essential for laparoscopic surgery; however, it is unknown whether this certification contributes to procedural safety. Methods:. Outcomes of laparoscopic rectal resections for cStage II and III rectal cancer performed from 2014 to 2016 at 56 Japanese hospitals were retrospectively reviewed. The impact of having versus not having certified surgeons on postoperative complications and other short- and long-term outcomes were assessed. In cases with ESSQS-certified surgeons, surgeons attended surgery in the capacity of an operator, assistant, scope operator, or advisor. Results:. Overall, 3188 procedures were analyzed, with 2644 procedures performed with and 544 without ESSQS-certified surgeons. A multivariate logistic regression model showed that the adjusted odds ratio of postoperative complications after procedures performed with ESSQS-certified surgeons was 0.68 (95% confidence interval, 0.51–0.91; P = 0.009). The adjusted odds ratios for conversion and pathological R0 resection rates with ESSQS-certified surgeons were 0.20 (P < 0.001) and 2.10 (P = 0.04), respectively. Multiple linear regression analyses showed significantly shorter surgical duration and more harvested lymph nodes for operations performed with ESSQS-certified surgeons. Multivariate Cox regression showed that the adjusted hazard ratios for poor overall and recurrence-free survival after operations performed with ESSQS-certified surgeons were 0.88 (P = 0.35) and 1.04 (P = 0.71), respectively. Conclusions:. This study showed the superiority of the short-term postoperative results for laparoscopic rectal procedures performed with ESSQS-certified surgeons.

When exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as food scarcity and/or low temperature, Drosophila melanogaster females enter reproductive dormancy, a metabolic state that enhances stress resistance for survival at the expense of reproduction. Although the absence of egg chambers carrying yolk from the ovary has been used to define reproductive dormancy in this species, this definition is susceptible to false judgements of dormancy events: e.g. a trace amount of yolk could escape visual detection; a fly is judged to be in the non-dormancy state if it has a single yolk-containing egg chamber even when other egg chambers are devoid of yolk. In this study, we propose an alternative method for describing the maturation state of oocytes, in which the amount of yolk in the entire ovary is quantified by the fluorescence intensity derived from GFP, which is expressed as a fusion with the major yolk protein Yp1. We show that yolk deposition increases with temperature with a sigmoidal function, and the quality of food substantially alters the maximum accumulation of yolk attainable at a given temperature. The Yp1::GFP reporter will serve as a reliable tool for quantifying the amount of yolk and provides a new means for defining the dormancy state in D. melanogaster.

Abstract Background Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is increasingly applied for early gastric cancer. ESD is a less invasive procedure and could be a radical treatment. However, in some cases, ESD cannot be completed owing to patient or technical factors. In such cases, which could have the potential for curative resection with ESD, standard gastrectomy is excessively invasive. Through closed laparoscopic and endoscopic cooperative surgery (LECS), gastric tumor can be precisely resected without exposing tumor cells to the abdominal cavity. Compared with standard gastrectomy, closed LECS is less invasive for the treatment of early gastric cancer. Case presentation We performed closed LECS for three cases of early gastric cancer after failed ESD. In all three cases, ESD was interrupted owing to technical and patient factors, including perforation, respiratory failure, and carbon dioxide narcosis. All three cases successfully underwent closed LECS with complete tumor resection and showed an uneventful postoperative course. All three patients remain alive and have experienced no complications or recurrence, with a median follow up of 30 (14–30) months. Conclusions Closed LECS is less invasive and useful procedure for the treatment of early gastric cancer, particularly in cases with difficulty in ESD.

Abstract Even in cases of cardiac arrest caused by hemorrhagic shock, when reliable control of the bleeding source is possible, ECPR may be an effective treatment option if anticoagulant therapy is well‐managed and is withdrawn early.

It is generally known that the groove on tire tread can increase the friction force between the tire and the road surface under wet condition because of the improvement of drainage performance. Although wheel tread of actual railway rolling stocks have a wheel turning trace like the groove on tire tread, the characteristics of tangential contact force of the wheel/rail under wet condition is not clarified in detail. In this study, the tangential contact force measurement using a pair of small cylindrical specimens was carried out to investigate the relationship between the wheel turning trace and the friction force under wet condition. The experimental result shows the friction force under wet condition does not increase due to high iron’s stiffness if the wheel turning trace provided on the tread. On the other hand, it is also confirmed that the wheel turning trace has a reduction effect of the variation of the friction coefficient under wet condition. From the numerical analysis based on these experimental results, it is clarified that the longitudinal vibration of the vehicle can be decreased if the wheel has the wheel turning trace in case of the braking running under semi-wet condition.

A 77-year-old woman with no medical history fell, and her face was strongly impacted on the ground. On arrival at our hospital, her initial vital signs were stable. She underwent an endoscopy to stop the bleeding. However, identification of the origin of the bleeding failed, and her injury resulted in hemorrhagic shock during the procedure. Head to face contrast computed tomography showed extravasation of contrast media into the maxillary sinus. Transcatheter arterial embolization was performed for the ruptured infraorbital artery branching from the maxillary artery. She recovered from the “shock” state after transcatheter arterial embolization and was admitted to the intensive care unit. There were no complications associated with transcatheter arterial embolization during hospitalization. For this case, early recognition of an active hemorrhage was challenging because the hemorrhage was pooled in the sinuses. Although epistaxis is sometimes fatal, transcatheter arterial embolization can be the first choice for the treatment of life-threatening epistaxis, owing to its safety and effectiveness.

Background Surfer's myelopathy is a non‐traumatic spinal cord injury that was first described in a publication in 2004. However, most emergency physicians are not familiar with this rare disease. Case Presentation The patient was a 19‐year‐old female novice surfer. She had experienced back discomfort without trauma during her surfing lessons. The discomfort turned to dysesthesia of both legs. She could not walk after 1 h and was brought to our hospital. Physical examination revealed weakness and dysesthesia of both legs, absent deep tendon reflexes, bilaterally positive Babinski reflex, and bladder and rectal disturbance. Spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed T2 prolongation from T7 to the medullary cone. She was diagnosed with surfer's myelopathy and treated conservatively. She recovered well and was discharged on day 28. Conclusion Emergency physicians must be better informed about surfer's myelopathy. Novice surfers and instructors should be educated on the early signs and symptoms of this condition.

We have developed MMDAgent (a fully open-source toolkit for voice interaction systems), which runs on a variety of platforms such as personal computers and smartphones. From this, the editing environment of the dialog scenario also needs to be operated on various platforms. So, we develop a scenario editor that is implemented on a Web browser. The purpose of this paper also includes making it easy to edit the scenario. Experiments were conducted for subjects using the proposed scenario editor. It is unclear how some Drosophila neurons develop sex-specific neurites that contribute to dimorphic circuitries required for gendered behavior. The authors show that sex-specific cleavage by the E3 ubiquitin ligase Cullin1 and 26S proteasome of the pleiotropic BTB-ZF transcription factor Lola confers its sexual fate-inducing ability in these neurons.

Abstract In this paper, a web-based spoken dialog generation environment which enables users to edit dialogs with a video virtual assistant is developed and to also select the 3D motions and tone of voice for the assistant. In our proposed system, “anyone” can “easily” post/edit contents of the dialog for the dialog system. The dialog type corresponding to the system is limited to the question-and-answer type dialog, in order to avoid editing conflicts caused by editing by multiple users. The spoken dialog sharing service and FST generator generates spoken dialog content for the MMDAgent spoken dialog system toolkit, which includes a speech recognizer, a dialog control unit, a speech synthesizer, and a virtual agent. For dialog content creation, question-and-answer dialogs posted by users and FST templates are used. The proposed system was operated for more than a year in a student lounge at the Nagoya Institute of Technology, where users added more than 500 dialogs during the experiment. Images were also registered to 65% of the postings. The most posted category is related to “animation, video games, manga.” The system was subjected to open examination by tourist information staff who had no prior experience with spoken dialog systems. Based on their impressions of tourist use of the dialog system, they shortened the length of some of the system’s responses and added pauses to the longer responses to make them easier to understand.

The main theme of the review is how changes in pheromone biochemistry and the sensory circuits underlying pheromone detection contribute to mate choice and reproductive isolation. The review focuses primarily on gustatory and non-volatile signals in Drosophila. Premating isolation is prevalent among closely related species. In Drosophila, preference for conspecifics against other species in mate choice underlies premating isolation, and such preference relies on contact chemosensory communications between a female and male along with other biological factors. For example, although D. simulans and D. melanogaster are sibling species that yield hybrids, their premating isolation is maintained primarily by the contrasting effects of 7,11-heptacosadiene (7,11-HD), a predominant female pheromone in D. melanogaster, on males of the two species: it attracts D. melanogaster males and repels D. simulans males. The contrasting preference for 7,11-HD in males of these two species is mainly ascribed to opposite effects of 7,11-HD on neural activities in the courtship decision-making neurons in the male brain: 7,11-HD provokes both excitatory and inhibitory inputs in these neurons and differences in the balance between the two counteracting inputs result in the contrasting preference for 7,11-HD, i.e., attraction in D. melanogaster and repulsion in D. simulans. Introduction of two double bonds is a key step in 7,11-HD biosynthesis and is mediated by the desaturase desatF, which is active in D. melanogaster females but transcriptionally inactivated in D. simulans females. Thus, 7,11-HD biosynthesis diversified in females and 7,11-HD perception diversified in males, yet it remains elusive how concordance of the changes in the two sexes was attained in evolution.

This paper describes the result of a tangential force measurement experiment by means of test wheels which is 500mm in diameter in order to investigate the relation between the size of the contact-patch and the tangential force characteristics. In the previous study on the tangential force characteristics of the wheel/rail, it had been sometimes indicated that the experimental results are a little bit smaller than those derived from the Kalker’s theory. Therefore, with a focus on the contact-patch of the wheel/rail, contact-patches of various sizes are set by means of changing the vertical load from 5kN to 35kN, and the tangential force coefficient and creep coefficient of contact-patch of various sizes are evaluated in terms of comparison with the Kalker’s theoretical value under the same criteria. As a result, we confirmed that the creep coefficient is 60% to 90% compared with the theoretical value under the same experimental conditions, because the ambient humidity of the test wheel is high and the contact-patch changes a little due to wear and plastic deformation. On the other hand, it has been clarified that the tangential force coefficient under large slip ratio condition in this study is saturated without falling like the Kalker’ theory.

This paper presents a basic study for developing a new adhesion improvement method for railway vehicles, focusing on the tangential force characteristics between wheels and rails. In our previous studies, the following phenomena have been confirmed. First, the tangential force of the wheel/rail is increased by repeated rolling and sliding frictional force, and the tangential force is stabilized by the oxide film covering the contact surface. In addition, the tangential force under the condition where the humidity around the contact surface is low tends to be larger than that under high humidity condition. And finally, these phenomena indicate that the friction coefficient of wheel/rail can be increased by instantaneously reducing the humidity around the contact surface. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a method for improving the frictional force that reflects the above-mentioned results in our previous studies. In the proposed method, assuming that it is applied to re-adhesion control of railway vehicles, the frictional force of the wheel/rail contact is temporarily increased by lowering the humidity around the contact surface by injecting dry nitrogen gas less than 30% humidity. To verify the proposed method, using a pair of the small cylindrical specimen, tangential force was measured under the conditions with different humidity. In addition, in order to confirm the effect on the braking performance of actual railway vehicle, numerical analysis was carried out. As a result, the experimental result showed the frictional force is increased by up to approximately 40% under high humidity condition, and it was confirmed by the numerical analysis that the proposed method has an improvement effect on the reduction of braking distance during dry nitrogen gas injection even if the humidity condition around the contact surface is high.

The fruitless (fru) gene of Drosophila melanogaster generates two groups of protein products, the male-specific FruM proteins and non-sex-specific FruCOM proteins. The FruM proteins have a 101 amino acids (a.a.)-long extension at the N-terminus which is absent from FruCOM. We suggest that this N-terminal extension might confer male-specific roles on FruM interaction partner proteins such as Lola, which otherwise operates as a transcription factor common to both sexes. FruM-expressing neurons are known to connect with other neurons to form a sexually dimorphic circuit for male mating behavior. We propose that FruM proteins expressed in two synaptic partners specify, at the transcriptional level, signaling pathways through which select pre- and post-synaptic partners communicate, and thereby pleiotropic ligand-receptor pairs for cell-cell interactions acquire the high specificity for mutual connections between two FruM-positive cells. We further discuss the possibility that synaptic connections made by FruM-positive neurons are regulated by neural activities, which in turn upregulate Fru expression in active cells, resulting in feedforward enhancement of courtship activities of the male fly.

fruitless (fru) is an important sex-determinant gene that controls the expression of neuroanatomical sex differences in Drosophila. Here the authors report that a core-promoter factor, TRF2, suppresses a male-type neurite specification through direct interaction with FruBM isoform at the robo1 target gene promoter.

The fruitless (fru) gene in Drosophila has been proposed to play a master regulator role in the formation of neural circuitries for male courtship behavior, which is typically considered to be an innate behavior composed of a fixed action pattern as generated by the central pattern generator. However, recent studies have shed light on experience-dependent changes and sensory-input-guided plasticity in courtship behavior. For example, enhanced male-male courtship, a fru mutant “hallmark,” disappears when fru-mutant males are raised in isolation. The fact that neural fru expression is induced by neural activities in the adult invites the supposition that Fru as a chromatin regulator mediates experience-dependent epigenetic modification, which underlies the neural and behavioral plasticity.

Drosophila platonic (plt) mutant males court with females but fail to copulate. Here, the authors find plt is an allele of scribblerand may disrupt courtship behaviour via developmental disruption of a subgroup of serotonergic Doublesex+ neurons in the abdominal ganglion.

This paper presents the experimental results of the transient characteristics of the tangential force between small cylindrical specimens assumed as a wheel after re-profiling and a new rail respectively, generated in the case where the frictional force is applied to the wheel/rail contact surface repeatedly, and also the results of the numerical analysis of the influence of the wheel/rail contact surface properties on the running performance of the railway vehicles. In the experiments, the tangential force characteristics in case of sweep under the different longitudinal slip change rate conditions have been obtained by means of a twin-disk sliding-frictional rolling machine equipped with the environmental device in RTRI. The experimental results show that the tangential force coefficient is smaller in the range of a low longitudinal slip ratio compared with the Kalker’s theoretical characteristics that are obtained by applying the Levi-Chartet’s formula of saturation, which are the steady characteristics of the tangential force, in case of the contact surface close to that after re-profiling, and that the tangential force coefficient becomes large when the frictional force is applied to the wheel/rail contact surface repeatedly. This means that the coefficient of friction becomes large due to the repetition of the rolling and sliding friction. In addition, in order to investigate the relation between the contact surface properties and the running performance of the railway vehicle, a numerical analysis using a simple wheel-rail dynamic model was carried out by comparing Kalker’s theoretical value with the experimental values. As a result of the numerical analysis, it’s clarified that in case of the power running, the wheel after re-profiling is more slippery than that without re-profiling after long run in the range of a low longitudinal slip ratio.

Males of the Drosophila melanogaster mutant croaker (cro) generate a polycyclic pulse song dissimilar to the monocyclic songs typical of wild-type males during courtship. However, cro has not been molecularly mapped to any gene in the genome. We demonstrate that cro is a mutation in the gene encoding the Calmodulin-binding transcription factor (Camta) by genetic complementation tests with chromosomal deficiencies, molecular cloning of genomic fragments that flank the cro-mutagenic P-insertion, and phenotypic rescue of the cro mutant phenotype by Camta+-encoding cDNA as well as a BAC clone containing the gene for Camta. We further show that knockdown of the Camta-encoding gene phenocopies cro mutant songs when targeted to a subset of fruitless-positive neurons that include the mcALa and AL1 clusters in the brain. cro-GAL4 and an anti-Camta antibody labeled a large number of brain neurons including mcALa. We conclude that the Camta-encoding gene represents the cro locus, which has been implicated in a species-specific difference in courtship songs between D. sechellia and simulans.

Behavior is a readout of neural function. Therefore, any difference in behavior among different species is, in theory, an outcome of interspecies diversification in the structure and/or function of the nervous system. However, the neural diversity underlying the species-specificity in behavioral traits and its genetic basis have been poorly understood. In this article, we discuss potential neural substrates for species differences in the courtship pulse song frequency and mating partner choice in the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup. We also discuss possible neurogenetic mechanisms whereby a novel behavioral repertoire emerges based on the study of nuptial gift transfer, a trait unique to D. subobscura in the genus Drosophila. We found that the conserved central circuit composed primarily of fruitless-expressing neurons (the fru-circuit) serves for the execution of courtship behavior, whereas the sensory pathways impinging onto the fru-circuit or the motor pathways downstream of the fru-circuit are susceptible to changes associated with behavioral species differences.

By genetic manipulations, we study the roles played by insulin-producing cells (IPCs) in the brain and their target, the corpora allata (CA), for reproductive dormancy in female Drosophila melanogaster, which is induced by exposing them to a combination of low temperature (11°C), short-day photoperiod (10L:14D) and starvation (water only) for 7 days immediately after eclosion (dormancy-inducing conditions). Artificial inactivation of IPCs promotes, whereas artificial activation impedes, the induction of reproductive dormancy. A transcriptional reporter assay reveals that the IPC activity is reduced when the female flies are exposed to dormancy-inducing conditions. The photoperiod sensitivity of reproductive dormancy is lost in pigment-dispersing factor (pdf), but not cry, mutants, suggesting that light input to IPCs is mediated by pdf-expressing neurons. Genetic manipulations to upregulate and downregulate insulin signaling in the CA, a pair of endocrine organs that synthesize the juvenile hormone (JH), decrease and increase the incidence of reproductive dormancy, respectively. These results demonstrate that the IPC-CA axis constitutes a key regulatory pathway for reproductive dormancy.

BackgroundEndovascular therapy has been shown to be effective in patients with acute cerebral large‐vessel occlusion, but real‐world efficacies are unknown. Methods and ResultsWe conducted a prospective registry at 46 centers between October 2014 and January 2017. Eligible patients were those who were aged 20 years or older, with acute cerebral large‐vessel occlusion, and who were hospitalized within 24 hours of the onset. We enrolled both consecutive patients who were treated with or without endovascular therapy. Endovascular therapy included thrombectomy, balloon angioplasty, stenting, local fibrinolysis, and piercing. The primary outcome was a favorable outcome as defined by a modified Rankin Scale of 0 to 2 at 90 days after onset. Secondary outcomes were modified Rankin Scale of 0 to 1 and mortality. Safety outcomes were intracerebral hemorrhage or a recurrence of ischemic stroke. We constructed the 2242 (1121 each) propensity score–matched patients cohort based on a propensity score for endovascular therapy and estimated the adjusted odds ratio, followed by sensitivity analyses on original 2399 (1278 in endovascular therapy versus 1121 in no endovascular therapy) patients. In the propensity score–matched cohort, favorable outcomes were observed in 35.3% and 30.7% of patients in the endovascular therapy and no endovascular therapy groups, respectively (P=0.02). The adjusted odds ratio for the favorable outcome was 1.44 (95% confidence interval, 1.10–1.86, P=0.007). The efficacy of endovascular therapy in achieving favorable outcomes did not differ between our subgroups and in the sensitivity analyses. ConclusionsEndovascular therapy decreased disabilities at 90 days in real‐world patients with acute cerebral large‐vessel occlusion. Clinical Trial RegistrationURL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Some mAL neurons in the male brain form the ipsilateral neurite (ILN[+]) in a manner dependent on FruBM, a male-specific transcription factor. FruBM represses robo1 transcription, allowing the ILN to form. We found that the proportion of ILN[+]-mALs in all observed single cell clones dropped from ∼90% to ∼30% by changing the heat-shock timing for clone induction from 4-5 days after egg laying (AEL) to 6-7 days AEL, suggesting that the ILN[+]-mALs are produced predominantly by young neuroblasts. Upon EcR-A knockdown, ILN[+]-mALs were produced at a high rate (∼60%), even when heat shocked at 6-7 days AEL, yet EcR-B1 knockdown reduced the proportion of ILN[+]-mALs to ∼30%. Immunoprecipitation assays in S2 cells demonstrated that EcR-A and EcR-B1 form a complex with FruBM. robo1 reporter transcription was repressed by FruBM and ecdysone counteracted FruBM. We suggest that ecdysone signaling modulates the FruBM action to produce an appropriate number of male-type neurons.
