Abstract

In this manuscript, a novel topology is proposed to integrate on-grid and off-grid PV systems supplying the same load premises. The load side is investigated and analyzed, and critical and non-critical loads are separated in terms of power supply. Critical and seasonal loads usually place stress on the grid’s point of common coupling (PCC). In the proposed topology, they are supplied by a novel topology for an off-grid solar pump PV system that lacks energy storage integration. The lack of energy storage batteries requires a novel design and sizing scheme for the off-grid PV system, and a methodology is proposed in this manuscript. The on-grid PV system is conventionally designed and coupled with the storage-less off-grid PV system to maintain load supply. The proposed methodology minimizes the ratings of the PCC and hence relieves stress on congested grids with renewable energy penetration, especially in condensed urban areas. The proposed structure enables the operation of microgrids with high penetration levels of renewable energy resources and minimizes dependance on storage batteries for off-grid systems. A case study is presented and thoroughly analyzed with the proposed methodology. The outcomes of the design process are evaluated economically and were found to be feasible, as is detailed and supported with simulation results.

18. Modeling and Control of Series–Series Compensated Inductive Power Transfer System

Abstract

In this paper, a T-equivalent circuit for loosely coupled transformer, which does not involve magnetic coupling, is presented. A detailed dynamic analysis based on extended describing function technique is presented for a series-series compensated inductive power transfer system. The continuous-time large-signal model, the steady-state operating point, and the small-signal model are derived in an analytical closed-form. This model includes both the frequency and the phase-shift control. Simulation and experimental verification results of the derived models are presented to validate the presented analysis.

19. Modeling the Time Duration Until the Adoption of Residential Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Systems

Abstract

This paper addresses two key decisions by households to adopt rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and the length of time until the adoption. It is hypothesized that these decisions are controlled by different mechanisms and should be modeled independently. This is the first attempt to formally estimate the length of time until the adoption to the authors’ knowledge. Two models are presented in this paper. The first is a mixed logit to model the respondents’ intention to adopt a solar PV system, and the second is a random parameters ordered probit to estimate the length of time until the adoption. Estimation results show that the number of electrical appliances, the households’ interest to harness economic benefits, and the type and characteristics of the dwelling motivate households to select a shorter duration until the adoption. Results also show that the majority (77.80%) of respondents with electric vehicles are highly likely to adopt a rooftop system and select a shorter time duration until adoption. In addition, a significant proportion (83.23%) of respondents with high monthly electricity bills is more likely to adopt a rooftop PV system and select a shorter time duration. Results show that the average monthly electricity bill for households with a PV system has decreased by 74.04%. Reducing monthly electricity bills is a key instigator for adopting a rooftop PV system. Our results confirm the hypothesis that even if there is an intent to adopt a rooftop solar PV system, the length of time until the adoption is controlled by another mechanism.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm for thermoelectric generators (TEG). The new-presented method is based on implementing an indirect open circuit voltage detection and short circuit current estimation methods, which will be used to directly control the TEG interface power converter, resulting in reaching the maximum power point (MPP) in minimal number of steps. Two modes of operation are used in the proposed algorithm, namely the perturb and observe (P&O) method for fine-tuning and the transient mode for coarse tracking of the MPP during fast changes that occur to the temperature gradient across the structure. A novel voltage sensing technique as well is proposed in this work, to reduce the number of voltage sensors used to control and monitor the power converter. The proposed strategy employs a novel approach to sense two different voltages using the same voltage sensor. The input and output voltage information is collected from an intermediate point in the converter. The reconstructed voltages are used in the control loops as well as for monitoring the battery output or load voltages. Simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the sensing technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
